Actually, it's a distributed system with few dozens or so servers, so just try again. Maybe the next server chosen will be a little faster for you. I've been getting constant 60 kB/s at home, maybe I'm just (feeling) lucky...

If I were you I'd think through this mirroring offer. The site generates very much bandwidth (rough estimate 100-200 GB per day without the trick we're using, thrice as much during an update day). You sure yor server can withstand that?

Speak of the devil, the site's been updated. Haven't checked if all the sets are properly linked yet, will do so when I get back from work.

New stuff:
Anno 1701: Dawn of Discovery
Bartender DS
Bomberman Land Touch! 2
Bomberman Story DS
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Custom Robo Arena
Death Note: Kira Game
Death Note: L o Tsugu Mono
Death, Jr. and the Science Fair of Doom
Digimon Championship
Digimon World: Dawn & Dusk
Dokidoki Majo Shinpan!
Elemental Monster: Gochuushin no Nazo
Essential Sudoku DS
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates
Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja (I've notticed that the game had an OST release quite recently, so the download has been taken down)
Kage Densetsu - The Legend of Kage 2
L: The Prologue to Death Note - Rasen no Wana
Master Jin Jin's IQ Challenge
Myst
Naruto: Ninja Council 3
Naruto: Ninja Destiny
Naruto RPG 3: Reijuu vs Konoha Shoutai
Naruto Shippuuden: Dairansen! Kage Bunsen Emaki
Naruto Shippuuden: Saikyou Ninja Daikesshuu 5
Simple DS Series Vol. 5: The Trump
Space Invaders Extreme (once again, OST release soon, so not available yet)
Tenchu: Dark Secret
The World Ends With You
Yoshi's Island DS
Zettai Zetsumei Dangerous Jiisan DS: Dangerous Sensation
Zoids Dash

Also, UF, instead of, you know, being a douchebag and all maybe you could look at doing another rip kit. Yoshi's Island driver does only play songs using roughly 550 kB or less of samples. Examples of games using more than 550 kB: Rune Factory 2, Ys 1 DS, Ys 2 DS. Probably Diddy Kong Racing and Megaman Battle Network 5 DS exhibit the same problem, can't check them now though.

How about you learn ARM assembly and do it yourself?

@Knurek: Thanks for the update.

@UF: But asking you to improve the rip kit is more fun. :P

considering that knurek has all this time on his hands he could just go ahead and learn to code. or is that too difficult?

but yeah, i'll make an updated ripkit later. or not, see if i care.
by Knurek at 10:44 AM EDT on March 27, 2008
Yeah, sure, I may do this stuff eventually. But really, I'd prefer to use my time on stuff that I can already do (like, you know, moar 2SF ripping, Hoot/GBS stuff, PSF timing, maybe even tackling that humongous KungFuFurby SPC backlog).

Not forcing you to do anything, the amount of games that work with the current ripkit is still staggering. Gonna take a while to burn through them.
by SquareTex at 2:47 PM EDT on March 27, 2008
Your efforts are appreciated, Knurek, no matter what UF tells you. With all you've put into DS ripping, I'd think he'd show more gratitude.

Frankly, what this board needs is more people besides you and hcs calling him on his crap.

Hey, folks. Newbie at the tagging, here, but glad to help out. I do have a couple questions before I unleash the Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin tags I've gotten together on the world, though:

1) Is there a standard tag name for the track number? (These do have track numbers, thanks to the OST. -track, maybe?)
2) I know there's a -2sfby tag. Is there an accepted standard to identify the tagger, or should I stop cramming my ego in there?
3) This is the one that'll get me in trouble. There's a stream in this pack for the opening movie's sound. What's the chance of seeing that converted to a 2sf so it can be tagged to match the rest? Is there already a tool or method and I've missed it?
by Knurek at 4:16 PM EDT on March 27, 2008
@1 Just name the mini2sf files accordingly (01 Opening.mini2sf). Will do the trick.
@2 Whatever's fine with you, though 2sfby is usually for people that did the ripping. Better use tagger=your_nick or just add a small textfile with your credits.
@3 No chance, but the stream is playable just fine with in_cube/in_vgmstream. Just post rename info for the .strm file.
by Electric Keet at 4:59 PM EDT on March 27, 2008
Thanks, Knurek.

Okay, the batch file to tag the CV:PoR set is at
http://www.sendspace.com/file/t3pl5d
and please let me know if I did anything galactically stupid.

Maybe I'll work on Mr. Driller: Drill Spirits next.
by Ice_Pegasus at 3:11 AM EDT on March 28, 2008
Hmmm yea i think is was just that one day that i had some slow downloads off that server...yesterday i was getting about 70kb/s - 80kb/s....
by Knurek at 5:25 AM EDT on March 28, 2008
@Electric Keet: everything seems fine to me. Thanks a lot, will add your tags in the next update.
by snakemeat at 10:25 AM EDT on March 28, 2008
@Electic Keet - Thanks for the tags from one huge Castlevania soundtrack fan!
by marioman at 11:30 AM EDT on March 28, 2008
@Knurek: Will the ZX Advent tags also be fixed in this next update?
by Knurek at 11:54 AM EDT on March 28, 2008
@marioman: I seriously can't find any difference between the ones already there and the ones you've posted earlier.

Any specifics as to what's been changed?
by marioman at 4:55 PM EDT on March 28, 2008
There are three things that need to be updated in the set:

1. The tags are outdated. The newest version has the descriptors for those who are not familiar with the OST. (e.g. "03 Destiny (Grey Opening Stage).mini2sf" instead of "03 Destiny.mini2sf".)

2. mmzxa-0021.mini2sf and mmzxa-0023.mini2sf are duplicates and can be removed. I converted the tracks to wav, inverted them, and mixed the them. No huge differences jumped out at me.

3. If mmzxa-0022.mini2sf is to remain in the set, it's tag is "Ouroboros Emerges".

Thanks for your hard work on this.

These had better sort music order in "finished mission" order.
(I did not notice it.)
by marioman at 10:10 AM EDT on April 3, 2008
Oh, I guess I forgot about this change to the ZXA set:

4. Souma has ripped the Energy Converter music. It needs to be added, but Souma's upload link is dead.
by Fred at 12:32 PM EDT on April 6, 2008
Hello, i was wondering why some 2sf packs are incomplete? Is something preventing it or is it just not done?

Also... nice work with 2sf's! :3
by Knurek at 2:39 PM EDT on April 6, 2008
@Fred: Ehh? Not sure I understand you...
Any examples of incomplete packs?
by Fred at 6:56 PM EDT on April 6, 2008
Hmm. Perhaps i was wrong in a way... >_>'

I had downloaded Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. I queued the folder in winamp and far too little tracks were showing up(ten of 'em).
Now, based on your reaction to my previous post i checked the 2sf page. Indeed, AJ: AA says "Tracks: 80", and my folder also suggest > 10 tracks.
Why does only 10 tracks show up in winamp? Have I missed something?
Sorry for jumping to hasty conclusions ^^;

EDIT: I am using in_cube, is it the right thing to use for 2sf's?

edited 7:01 PM EDT April 6, 2008
by Mouser X at 10:24 PM EDT on April 6, 2008
In_cube plays streamed files. 2SFs are not streamed. Therefore, no, in_cube is not what you're looking for. Some NDS games used streamed files (most are STRM, some are ADX), but 2SFs are the sequenced data (well, UF I think hacked together a method to play streamed stuff, but I don't think that's used very much if at all). In other words, *.mini2SF is what you're trying to play, and in_cube has absolutely no relation to those files in anyway whatsoever.

To play 2SFs, you need either Highly Whatever (on UNKNOWNFILE's page), or vio2SF (recommended).

Again, in_cube plays streamed music (MP3, CDA, FLAC, OGG, WAV, those are all streamed). Vio2SF playes 2SFs, which are actually NDS ROM images. To play 2SFs, the player emulates the NDS hardware, and therefore never directly interacts with the music it plays. In_cube interacts directly with the files it plays, because it reads from those files.

Anyway, that better clear up the issue. Mouser X over and out.
by Fred at 10:38 AM EDT on April 7, 2008
Ah, thanks, it worked. ^^

But damn, winamp sure started to drain a lot of CPU! Will have to convert them to mp3 or something... :P
by Mouser X at 2:00 PM EDT on April 7, 2008
What CPU type do you have? I have an AMD 64 bit 2 ghz (3200+ IIRC), and it takes 10-30% of my CPU. If you're running on something like a 500 mhz CPU, then of course it's going to murder your system. You're emulating the Nintendo DS hardware, through software. Essentially, imagine trying to emulate the Nintendo 64 without any hardware acceleration. It's going to be slow. Vio2SF is emulating the NDS, and thus takes up CPU. You're listening to an emulated format. It's to be expected that it hammers older systems.

If you're on a newer machine (1 ghz or more), it should be pretty good. What kind of problems are you having? How much CPU is it taking (CTRL+DEL+ALT will open the taskmanager. Check the Processes tab to find out what percentage Winamp is taking)? Again, what CPU do you have? Check your Winamp settings (CTRL+P), and look through there. Maybe you have something misplaced. Also, are you sure you're running vio2SF v0.13? What version of Winamp are you using? Are you on Vista?

Without more information, I really can't help much. Hopefully you can figure out the problem. Mouser X over and out.
by F3582 at 2:29 PM EDT on April 7, 2008
By the way: Arbee has transformed/hacked the Linux core of Desmume into a 2sf player. The result is called vio2play and won't be included into AO, unfortunately (GPL license, you know). Anyway, no more Wine-Winamp mess for the Linux crowd.
by Mouser X at 2:38 PM EDT on April 7, 2008
Well, I found the post where it says it can't be included due to GPL, but that makes no sense to me. I just now downloaded the AO SDK source, and the PSF and PSF2 engines are both GPLed. If those can be included, why not DeSmume? Am I misunderstanding licensing issues (most likely)? I'd like some clarification on this, because if the PSF engines are GPLed, and in the AO SDK, what's to stop another GPLed code base from being included? They're both GPL... Obviously they could be different GPL version (GPL1 or 2, as opposed to 2 or 3, or something), but all I'm seeing right now is "GPL."

Basically, I'd like clarification as to why one GPL source can be included, but another can't. It seems inconsistent to me. I'm not saying that AO is at fault, of course, just that I don't see how this fits together. Mouser X over and out.

edited 2:49 PM EDT April 7, 2008
by F3582 at 6:10 PM EDT on April 7, 2008
You're wrong here. All engines included in AO SDK are either licensed under the BSD license or the Mame License (and ZLib has its own ZLib license). Both are not compatible to the GPL, therefore mustn't be linked to GPL-licensed code.

EDIT: Whoops... Looks like parts of the PSF code is indeed GPL-licensed... The readme states that combining those parts with GPL-incompatible software is legally unclear, even though the situation is pretty obvious, actually.

edited 6:20 PM EDT April 7, 2008
by unknownfile at 7:08 PM EDT on April 7, 2008
the GPL is a waste of time, and a waste of kilobytes. richard stallman can go cut off his dick.
by Fred at 7:27 AM EDT on April 8, 2008
Mouser X: Well... I have an old P4, 1.8 GHz. CPU usage fluctuates pretty much while i play 2sf, but 35%+ seems to be it. Memory usage jumps up from the ~8MB to ~87MB. Not included switching tracks... that freezes winamp for ~3 secs and CPU jumps up to about 90%.

I'ts not really a problem, but i was a little surprised at the sudden jump in usage :P

Yes, along with MMZX, PW2 (if anyone has PW1/2/4 tags to submit, do so now) and Super Robot Taisen W tags.

Few notes on the Ouendan/EBA games - they use a pretty strange system, splitting the songs into dozens of little files (probably to eliminate the repeating parts). Which makes them pretty unfunny to listen to in the current form. If anyone wants to tackle the songs, to keep them in proper order, it'd be greatly appreciated.

What happened to Diddy Kong Racing, just out of curiosity? I don't see it on any of the recent lists ...
Diddy Kong Racing by Elven Spellmaker at 7:32 PM EDT on April 21, 2008
The USF version of Diddy Kong racing is probably better... From what I've seen of the D.S. version, the game is a cut down verison of it (in all respects...), even if the audio is better (don't know if it is...). =(
by Omochao at 8:13 PM EDT on April 21, 2008
Agreed, they really messed up on the music for the DS version. On the other hand, the DS version DOES have a number of additional tracks.

UF: Why don't you just shut it, TROLL?
by unknownfile at 8:22 PM EDT on April 21, 2008
Because:

a) you're insistent that someone else will magically do it for you eventually despite the fact that I most certainly don't give a shit and Knurek refuses to use anything but the ripkit
b) it isn't hard to do once you know what you're doing and you refuse to learn
c) trolling you requires little effort but produces results every time

Thank you for playing, have a nice day.
by P_L at 11:29 PM EDT on April 21, 2008
About DKR: I know that the USF version is far better (as is the N64 game, I have both this and the DS version and the DS one feels like it belongs in the era when the DS was still trying to make touch-controlling everything "cool"), but it has some interesting stuff I would've liked, such as the new track BGMs, some new fanfares, and the different "replay" songs at the end of each race.

I have most of an okay-quality MP3 rip though, and I don't even listen to it all that much anyway, so I guess I can live without a 2sf version.
by Knurek at 1:23 AM EDT on April 22, 2008
Omochao, if there'd be any news on the subject, I'd share them with you the first time you've asked.

In other news, the next update's gonna be big (again).

One sdat is assigned to one music....
You must make a lot of 2sflib!

Is that a huge problem though? There are many SSF, DSF and 2SF rips that have multiple lib files. Sure a single lib file would be nice, but if multiple lib files are the only option, I would think that it would be acceptable.
by bxaimc at 4:37 PM EDT on May 9, 2008
Its very stressful work making 2sfs with many 2sflibs, believe me :)
by Knurek at 6:36 PM EDT on May 9, 2008
@marioman: I've done one multi 2sflib rip with FFTA2, and sure as hell don't want to do another.
Feel free to do it yourself though, I will welcome it with open arms.
by marioman at 8:21 PM EDT on May 9, 2008
OK. I thought everything was automated with UF's rip kit. Sorry.

A couple of things about FFIII DS:

1. The unknown track is Chocobo Forest.
2. The first track of the OST is in the game - it's the intro.

I've tagged the Zelda: Phantom Hourglass tracks. Uploaded them over here: Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

There's one track that I can't get to play(zph-00a6), but based on the length and proximity to the Dungeon tune, I suspect it's supposed to be the short boring tune that plays mostly in monster free caves.

There is two tracks that have alternate versions which just remove one of the instruments or something(the quieter version of the Ocean theme that plays while the boat's not moving and a version of the "Navigating The Fog" track without the "voices")... Would it be easy to modify these tracks to play the alternate versions(by muting one of the instruments) or does the format make stuff like that less straight forward than one might think? Not a pressing concern as far as the PH set is concerned, but there's many tracks in the Animal Crossing Wild World set that would require that sort of tampering to sound "right".(Though because of the sheer number of tracks that require it I'd hardly expect anyone to bother in the case of that set... Just mentioning it in case it isn't already known.)

There also seems to be a problem with several tracks in various sets where a certain instrument will suddenly get loud when, if anything, it should be doing the opposite(It happens in the intro of the Linebeck's Theme track in this set, and I noticed it in a few of the K.K. Slider songs in the Animal Crossing set). Is the cause of this problem known?

Thanks for all the great work, guys! My playlist would probably be half the size(or worse, quality) right now if it weren't for all your hard work! :D

Based on that question, it sounds like you're not very familiar with the xSF format (PSFs, USFs, GSFs, 2SFs, etc.). No, it's not easy. In fact it's usually somewhat difficult. Because most 2SF sets are ripped using the generic driver, it makes it that much harder. That is, it requires altering numerous aspects of the 2SF, both the sequences and the driver (which is the generic one, not the original one) to remove/mute/alter the songs to match what you expect to hear. While what you ask is entirely possible (check out the Banjo-Tooie/Kazooie USF sets), it usually requires an in-depth knowledge of the inner workings of the driver for that game. Savestates of that particular song can come in very useful here.

One major problem is that very few people have knowledge that is that extensive. Unknownfile originally created the 2SF format, and the generic driver ripkit. Since then, he has done very little for that format. Almost all of the currently available 2SFs have been ripped with the ripkit, and thus require very little knowledge, if any at all, of how things actually work within the game. Uknownfile is (to my knowledge) the only one that might even come close to being able to alter 2SFs to separate dynamic songs into their various parts. However, and I mean no offense in this, I doubt he's (currently) capable of it (and even if he is, I strongly doubt he'd actually do it).

Perhaps that might not have fully explained things, but I do think it adequately answered the question. Hopefully it (slightly) explained the inner workings of xSFs a little bit. Mouser X over and out.

There was a furious diatribe against unknownfile here at one point, but since we've already had it out in the FTP thread, there's no point in keeping it.

I really doubt UF meant disrespect towards Knurek. I think he meant it more like SPCs. Sure, SPC is wonderful. It's easy to rip; anyone can do it. However, there are some SNES games that simply can't be ripped to SPC no matter how hard you try. This is why CaitSith2 worked on SNSF for awhile. With SNSF, you can rip any SNES game. One of the problems with SNSF is that it's more difficult to rip, and hundreds of games have already been ripped to SPC. This causes some people to say "Why SNSF? We already have SPCs!" and they ignore the benefits that SNSF brings.

I think what UF was trying to say is that the ripkit, while it does make ripping 2SFs easier, actually hurt the format itself because it caused people to ignore other (more correct) methods of ripping.

I completely agree that what Knurek has done is wonderful. I'm all for it 100%. However, UF does have a point here, in that because it makes ripping so much easier, it has caused people ignore the "proper" method of ripping 2SFs. That is, ripping them using their original drivers. If people were to do that, then more games might be ripped, because more people would understand the inner workings of 2SFs, and they would be able to identify games that use drivers other than the "default (generic)" driver. They'd also be more capable of separating and identifying dynamic songs easier as well (though I would still expect it to be a slight pain), due to this increase in their insight to 2SF ripping.

Hopefully that is what UF was actually trying to say, but said in a manner that not only doesn't ambiguously offend people, but actually makes sense. Mouser X over and out.
by SquareTex at 6:10 PM EDT on June 2, 2008
I wouldn't be surprised if you were spot-on, MouserX.

I think I'm done chewing UF out for the moment. Hopefully I'll never have to do that again because - believe me or not - I don't LIKE yelling at people. Sometimes, however, it's the only way to get a point across, and it didn't look like diplomacy was going to get the job done. :|
by nensondubois at 9:10 PM EDT on June 2, 2008
For me Wario's Woods is the only reason for the format and I'm sure other people have other reasons.
by marioman at 10:12 PM EDT on June 2, 2008
Hear, hear. I wish that someone would fix that rip so it plays right in Highly Competitive. (And fix HC so it doesn't crash as often.)
by Lunar at 7:07 AM EDT on June 3, 2008
Seconded/thirded/etc. The only real benefit of SNSF I can think of (from the perspective of end users) is covering games that SPC can't. And that's already been done, to an extent.

I'd also like to see Sim City 2000 ripped at some point. Other than that, there isn't much else I'd want.

I feel similarly about MDSF.
by Knurek at 12:29 PM EDT on June 3, 2008
Don't forget about Shiren, ya all. 2SF version is fine and all, but having the original as well would be a good thing in my book.

@Mouser X: Actually identifying games that don't use stock driver is about as easy as it gets. I've even posted a list of those I could find two or three pages back.
Doesn't change much of course, as it's the hacking part that's very much problematic.
by holyice7 at 3:57 AM EDT on June 7, 2008
Just wondering if anyone has the original, untagged Phoenix Wright 2 and 3 sets. I'm looking for some sound effects, and missing tracks.

I noticed the original PW set had a lot of extra files that needed to be culled out, but the sound effects were in there as well. I was thinking it'd be the same with the other two.
by Knurek at 6:25 AM EDT on June 7, 2008
Nope, didn't delete any during the tagging process. I think they were kept separate from BGM, so I didn't rip them.
by holyice7 at 11:06 PM EDT on June 9, 2008
Well, damn.

I'd ask, but then that'd be asking you to do it, and I'd honestly rather learn this for myself soon.

...I just never really caught where the tools were.

How is work going on Wario Ware?
by Knurek at 4:01 AM EDT on June 13, 2008
I take it you volunteer to browse through 1500+ songs and trim SFX. Oh, and optimize the set beforehand (with 1500+ songs it shouldn't take longer than a two days on Core2 Duo, really)?

Because I sure as hell don't plan on doing either.

This is insane! ban him for insulting my tags!
by marioman at 5:32 PM EDT on June 13, 2008
I was thinking along the lines of "ban him because he has made only three posts and all of them are senseless".
by Lunar at 6:14 PM EDT on June 13, 2008
i think we should ban people who do nothing but post requests over and over while doing nothing themselves.

OOPS.
by hcs at 6:46 PM EDT on June 13, 2008
I think that we should ban anyone suggesting banishment.
by marioman at 10:02 PM EDT on June 13, 2008
@hcs: If you did that, you would get yourself into an infinite banishment loop. In order to correct it, you would have to unban anyone suggesting unbanishment. Seriously though, if this is not UNKNOWNFILE's idea of a joke, what good is it to keep this uf user here?
