Hey, uh, I have a hard time keeping up with this kind of stuff (which is something you may have already from me). Is the up797.zip version of vio2SF (0.09+DeSmuME 0.7.3 sez Winamp) the latest and most optimal plugin? And there's still no, um, in-Winamp way to view/edit tags, right?

Anyway, here's the tagged sets for Guilty Gear Dust Strikers and Summon Night Twin Age. Errors may or may not abound, strms and 2sflibs included due to laziness.
by Mouser X at 4:33 AM EDT on June 18, 2008
Certainly not. Check here for the newest versions of various plugins (vio2SF, aoDSF, aoSSF). Hopefully you'll notice there's a v0.14 of vio2SF. Also, though I've never used it, tag editing might work. Have you tried it? ALT+3 does open something with text fields and stuff. Hope that helps. Mouser X over and out.
by Knurek at 8:27 AM EDT on June 18, 2008
Umm, Emperor ServingSpoon, q3, DAIS, thanks a lot for the tags. I'll update the site this weekend (maybe even tag a set or two myself).

Haven't been ripping much lately, seems Nintendo updated the music tools and just about every game I've tried lately doesn't work with the ripkit (at all, or just some tracks, doesn't really matter). Pity that, does help in unmotivating me somewhat.
by nensondubois at 4:29 PM EDT on June 18, 2008
Knurek, go back to GBS and NSF ripping, please?
by Knurek at 1:18 AM EDT on June 19, 2008
How can I go back to something I never done in the first place?
by Lunar at 3:38 AM EDT on June 19, 2008
I lol'd

looking forward to the next update.

another thing: is there a similar site for KSS files? I've got that big pack of KSS files with m3u lists, but naturally I can't update it if I don't know of a source to get new and updated sets from. I searched around and couldn't find anything.
I need some sound besides music... by LarryS3 at 7:06 AM EDT on June 19, 2008
I don't know, but only music was distributed in the 2SF packages... However, I need some sound from the game, while it could be tough to extract it from recorded in-game sound from emulators...

Currently I need all the sound (I've already got music) from [Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin]... I wonder if the ripper could still have the mini2sfs or hold the method of ripping, or otherwise there are possible ways to rip it much easier than the first time we rip it...

Updated today, not sure if there are any new files, but at least it's organized somewhat better.

@LarryS3:

Try using VGMTrans, should be able to extract all SFX from the game.

Knurek that's the one I mean, yeah. Is that the only place to get it? No page like Penultimate GBS or anything? Also are updates to it announced anywhere?

Very nice set of KSSes you got there, good sir.
by Knurek at 12:30 PM EDT on June 20, 2008
I think it *should* be complete, gamewise at least. There's a lot of homebrew stuff, which I'm really not that interested in, and maybe a few Japanese game rips got lost due to the low retency upload sites they use.
by Lunar at 2:28 PM EDT on June 20, 2008
Ahhh, so it's pretty much complete, that's great! I'll get the latest RAR.

Anyway, I think a page for KSS files would be cool, as it makes linking people to soundtracks much easier (instead of linking people to an entire RAR file), as well as helps greatly in disseminating composer information that can otherwise be hard to come by. I understand it's time consuming to get pages like Penultimate GBS/Manly 2SF up though, although both those pages have proved invaluable, to me at least.

EDIT: the soundtrack to "Shalom" is missing from the new pack.

Knightmare 3 - Shalom (1987)(Konami) :)

As for links to files, composer credits and all that jazz, I have *plans* for the next Hoot Archive update. Plans that are pretty much finished, when MSX games are concerned at least (SMS and GG will need to wait a while).

Hm, since I never finished my Kirby Canvas Curse tags (and don't intend to), I'm posting up what I have, for anyone who would like to finish them off. I think all the Canvas Curse tracks are tagged appropriately, aside from one "Unknown" track. It's just the Nightmare in Dreamland tracks that need tagging. I had planned to have those tagged as being a separate "disc".

http://www.shakal.net/lunar/temp/kcc_tag_e.bat

Also, I'm guessing Tadashi Ikegami was only credited for the Nightmare in Dreamland tracks, but I've credited them both anyway to be safe (might change that for my own copy).

ripkit stuff by unknownfile at 3:13 PM EDT on June 26, 2008
I did say the ripkit wasn't the most reliable way to rip stuff. Ah well, it looks like I'm going to need to fix this mess.

You have a mission for me though:

Find a ROM that, when the sdat is swapped with one from another game, still plays music. The only game that I know does this is Yoshi's Island DS but that's what the old ripkit is based around.

If you can find it I'll see what I can do with it when I get back from vacations.

by marioman at 3:56 PM EDT on June 26, 2008
Thank you. Funny, I was just thinking about the need for a new 2SF ripkit. Will a SDAT combiner be on the horizon too?
by unknownfile at 7:23 PM EDT on June 26, 2008
I wouldn't count on that. Sonic Rush or whatever could probably be done by looking for the routine that loads the specific banks into memory and rip stuff from there.
by souma at 9:00 PM EDT on June 26, 2008
To examine it, I often change sdat and must pack it with ndstool?
by Sonicandtails at 9:46 PM EDT on July 13, 2008
When will we see Metal Slug 7 ripped? I'm eager for it! Thanks in advance! :)
by Knurek at 10:31 AM EDT on July 14, 2008
All music is streamed (with hideous quality to boot), so you might as well extract them yourself, if you're in that much of a hurry.
by DChronos at 7:03 PM EDT on July 14, 2008
Someone needs to rip the music for the DS game Ketsui. Awesome music. Here's some vids with what I think are the best songs:

Stage 2
Stage 4
Stage 5

I know this isn't a DS game, but it's another JP shooter game that has awesome music, some of the best ever in a shmup, imo... It's a PC game I doubt anyone here has called Tobi Tsukihime, which has spectacular music. Here's a few vids, the few I can find...

Stage 1
Stage 2 music
Stage 1 and an ok one for stage 3
a tin can cruddy stage 5 :/

Here's one playing through all stages, though it's harder to hear the music, but it does have all 5 stage songs audible at some point. You can skip through and listen to what it's got. Stage 3 is like an ode to Gradius... it sounds so much like it belongs to a Gradius stage. And Stage 4 is my absolute favorite shmup song ever... I wish I could find a vid for that.
All Stages
by Knurek at 1:26 AM EDT on July 15, 2008
Someone really needs to check if the game has actually been released before requesting a rip.
by DChronos at 11:31 PM EDT on July 15, 2008
Well, that's strange, cause I could swear those vids are from the DS game, and the music I got from the official soundtrack containing it is NDS music, and includes remakes of the songs. I thought I read it was released 5-27, but I guess that's just when the website they made for it opened.

I have a question.. The Megaman Star Force 2sf Was Supposed to be released yesterday... (16 July).. when is it gonna be up? Its my favorite game... or has someone not ripped it yet? Or did the 2sf mirror change?
by Knurek at 6:14 AM EDT on July 17, 2008
Sorry, been pretty busy with RL and stuff.
Will try to update the page this weekend (along with tag contributions and some new rips I've managed to do).
by Ice_Pegasus at 7:43 AM EDT on July 17, 2008

by Omochao at 6:31 PM EDT on July 17, 2008
You also need to work on DQ5, because, like DQ4, it is not compatible with VGMtrans.
by q 3 at 12:18 AM EDT on July 20, 2008
I've finally gotten around to Advance Wars Days of Ruin. Kind of an odd soundtrack, half the tracks are streamed and half are sequenced - but there's several tracks with both streamed and sequenced versions. The latter seem to be preliminary versions that are not used in the game; I've noted them as such. There are also several apparently unused tracks, although they could just be extra alternate versions that I'm simply unable to identify. Anyway, I've left out the streamed tracks to reduce the download size; they're pretty easy to identify from the filenames, but if there's enough demand I can put them up, too.
by Knurek at 5:41 AM EDT on July 20, 2008
@q 3: Could you post a rename batch for the STRM files? Something to keep them in line with the renamed 2SFs.

Something like:

Pokémon Diamond by Elven Spellmaker at 8:06 AM EDT on July 20, 2008
Hi,

I'm assuming that the custom header for Pokémon Diamond is never going to be decoded, if it can.

Just wondering but doesn't Mystery Dungeon use the same header? Or is that a bad assumption? If anyone had tried to decode the header and can't, I would be interested to know...

I would really like the game soundtrack and if anyone is working on this I would love to know...
Or could someone take another look at it?

I know nothing about making these files (my only program knowledge is JavaScript [including AJAX], VB, PHP and a bit of JASS [Blizzards War3 Editor code].) otherwise I would have a go myself. =)

Many Thanks,

Well, dangit...I was hoping to give something back to the community, but it's out of my grasp. :(

Some enterprising ROM rippers have ALREADY set out Sigma Harmonics to feast upon. I quickly grabbed it, and did an analysis of the contents. Y'see, based on the samples that have been released, many of us were expecting the music to be a collection of streams.

Nope. No streams.

Not even your basic sequences, either.

It's those blasted SeqArcs (SSAR files) that - as far as I know - nobody's figured out how to decode yet. And believe me...I've been looking!

Well, the OST comes out in a month. I guess I can be patient, but I was really hoping to give my fellow Hamauzu fans a nice preview.

Unless...ARE there developments in the world of SSAR decoding that aren't easy to find yet?
by Knurek at 1:38 AM EDT on August 21, 2008
Not to sound too condescending, but you suck at this. :D

The ssars are used for SFX, as evident by their filenames. Proper music is streamed, in ADX. Just use adXtract on data.cpk file, will rip out ~40 songs (crappy sound quality I'm afraid, but better than nothing).
by SquareTex at 2:00 AM EDT on August 21, 2008
Just now discovered that for myself, and was heading over here to update.

Ah well, lesson learned. ;)

And now I have my Hamauzu! :D

*EDIT*

...and so do you. :)
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WFNVC2JE

Keep in mind these are just the ADXs, so you'll need the proper items to play 'em. And they're also a bit...unsorted as well. :P

But all the same, there's some GOOD STUFF in there!

edited 2:53 AM EDT August 21, 2008
by hcs at 3:12 AM EDT on August 21, 2008
Just wondering, what version of adXtract did you use? These seem to be missing their terminal frame, which doesn't contain any audio data but rightly ought to be there to avoid breaking decoders.
0.2 added this and it's from last November, could you have an older version?

(note that what 0.2 doesn't add is a variable length terminal frame; it just assumes the frame is 18 bytes, which is the minimum it must be. the file will say if it is to be longer for padding but I never got around to fixing this publicly. anyway a decoder only needs 18 bytes)

edited 3:14 AM EDT August 21, 2008
by SquareTex at 8:24 AM EDT on August 21, 2008
Oh, well that's the thing...it wasn't adXtract at all. Working completely on a hunch, I brought the NDS into FastElbja's ADPCM app...and lo and behold! A bounty of ADXs.

I'm not sure what protocols the app uses to make the extractions, though.

Lunar Knights tagged set.

Point whoever updates the manly mansite to that.

And I'll also note that the Wireless Battle track seems to be missing from the set. It could do with a re-rip. Also, if there's a way to get the videos out of there, the intro screen video has some neat music, and a few of the cut scenes were, if nothing else, amusing.

Say, when was the last time that generic driver was updated? I don't know when, but I still haven't bothered checking.

To rectify this situation, I require a new ROM that allows for multiple SDAT files to be used with the same program code. This is what allowed the thing to exist in the first place - perhaps it's due to sloppiness on my part or it's Nintendo's fault it happened, but either way I'm still awaiting a new ROM.

FURTHERMORE - if you could upload one of these new SDATs, I can take a look at it.

Well, someone needs to get working on KSSU as a number of the VGMtrans extracted tracks don't sound right at all.

Some of those tracks are Dynablade Area 3(Cave), Dynablade Area 4(Poppy Bros.), Mt. Dedede, and Battle With Marx
by Knurek at 3:07 AM EDT on September 25, 2008
@UF:
I've tried looking for a game like that, no luck on my part. Maybe it's just the Yoshi's Island game that has some bug in music code or something, dunno.

Here's one SDAT that doesn't work at all:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/t2euur

@Omochao:
Please, the nagging is really demotivating. Especially since the game has an SPC set available, and from what I've seen the DS version doesn't have any arranged music.

Yea, pure streamed games are on the site as well (quite a few of them at that).

BTW, hcs was nice anought to modify the tracer a bit. Doesn't need any recompilation now:
www.snesmusic.org/hoot/DeSmuME_save.exe
www.snesmusic.org/hoot/DeSmuME_trace.exe

Use the first exe for making the savestate, use the second one for cleaning. You can modify top/bottom trace values by command line parameters. Example:

DeSmuME_trace.exe --trace_bottom=0 --trace_top=40
by Lunar at 9:22 AM EDT on September 25, 2008
oh, nice! thanks hcs (and you for bringing it to my attention). currently cleaned 5 of 113. now begins the waiting. all being well i'll edit this post in a little while with the set.

BTW, hcs was nice anought to modify the tracer a bit. Doesn't need any recompilation now

This is awesome. Combined with the original ripkit documentation, the only thing preventing anyone from ripping is laziness. No need for those unfamiliar with coding to be overwhelmed.

Couldn't find the Izuna OST, eh, Knurek?
by Dais! at 1:19 PM EDT on September 25, 2008
oh wait, duh, forgot what I was going to post

That Sonic Chronicles set....I mean, I'm not entirely up on what is going on inside a mini2sf, but is there any possibility that the game uses a special way of storing samples that didn't get caught in ripping the 2sflib? I find it extremely hard to believe that the music quality is that bad.

(the time loops are weird too, but that's another matter)
by chaos_warchild at 2:09 PM EDT on September 25, 2008
@Knurek: Actually regarding Kirby Super Star Ultra, while it doesn't remix any of the old songs, there are new songs added, including some new boss battle themes. Just to let you know.
by Knurek at 2:40 PM EDT on September 25, 2008
@DAIS: Yeah, don't think I have that, but I'm in no tagging mood either way (since I have OSTs for Megaman Star Force games, Doki Doki Shinpan, Kabu Trader Shun, etc).
Feel free to do them though. I promise I won't let them lay on HDD for few months this time. :D

Also, I don't think there's anything wrong with the Sonic Chronicle tracks. Just checked the SDAT, and the sample seta are extremely small (19 kB). Maybe it's an Demumeme core error, so it doesn't play the synth tracks or something.

I'll see about time later.

And here it is!

http://www.vgmusic.com/~lunar/kssu2sf.rar

Strangely, three .sseq files were missing, however their 2sf equivalents appear in the set and play just fine. That baffles me.

#88 SEQ_MV_HARU_ED.sseq - 0058
#89 SEQ_MV_HARU_ED2.sseq - 0059
#90 SEQ_MV_DOUKUTU_ED.sseq - 005a

¯\(°_o)/¯

I also hope there are some improvements to the tagging process in future. Whatever way you do it currently, it's a nightmare. It takes way too long.

ALSO ALSO. New Ishikawa compositions?????? <3 The new tracks on this are nice (I particularly love 0044, 0046 and 0047). I've only credited Miyakawa and Ishikawa for the time being (even though I believe Miyakawa did sfx originally). I'd like to see the credits for this game. Perhaps other HAL composers contributed new tracks too...

Naturally, point out any problems with the set. I think there were one or two silent tracks in there. Hopefully all the times are okay though.

@Lunar:

SEQ_MV_HARU_ED is doubled as SE_MV_HARU_ED1 (sdattool extracts only the second one then).
Same with other files.

And timing stuff takes about 3 minutes for me here per set. Much shorter than optimizing. :|

you will have to run me through your method, because it took me much, much longer.
by unknownfile at 5:26 PM EDT on September 25, 2008
Knurek, have you ripped other games with .SADL files? Because this page doesn't cover them, so they probably lack proper headers.

The game can still be ripped providing you have the game code lying around somewhere and are prepared to do the work. Or I can just do it.

(Hint: Backtrace from calls to StartSeq and randomly insert breakpoints)
by Elven Spellmaker at 5:43 PM EDT on September 25, 2008
Has anyone tried Pokémon Diamond yet, or is the header not going to be attempted?
by marioman at 8:16 PM EDT on September 25, 2008
Thanks for the KSSU rip Lunar. I'm listen to it now - good stuff.
by Omochao at 9:42 PM EDT on September 25, 2008
THANK YOU for the KSSU .2sfs!
by agu fungus at 12:02 AM EDT on September 26, 2008
"Strangely, three .sseq files were missing, however their 2sf equivalents appear in the set and play just fine. That baffles me."

Wait a second. Missing from the game rom, or missing from the 2sf set? I'm lost.
by marioman at 10:41 AM EDT on September 26, 2008
Since everyone else is throwing out requests, I guess I will be a conformist and update mine:

Sonic Rush Adventure
Mega Man Battle Network 5 DS
Super Princess Peach (re-rip)

And that will probably be all of the requests from me for a while.

@Omochao: I am glad that you are excited about the KSSU set. Can you tag it?

I seriously need to port the optimizer to a command prompt though.

Thanks to hcs, we figured out how to get the optimizer to run via command line (for .bat file use or whatever). Simply call it like so:

DeSmuME_trace.exe "modcrap.nds" --trace_bottom=0 --trace_top=40

Note the quotes around the rom name. That's the important part. Of course, this still opens an instance of DeSmuME, but that's not a real annoyance unless you are listening to something else.

Super Princess Peach has already been ripped by UF, so you're in luck!

Thanks for the link snakemeat, but the SPP rip that UF did is broken in some places. UF was still working on in_2sf at the time, so there was question about whether the problem was with the 2SF set or the player. IIRC, UF has determined that the problem is with the set and said that it needs to be re-ripped.

marioman/Omochao: glad it's appreciated. i've been looking forward to this game's music too.

"Wait a second. Missing from the game rom, or missing from the 2sf set? I'm lost."

actually missing from the .sdat file. the 2sf set has them though. i'm as lost as you are though, really. i'm not versed in this xSF making business.
by Omochao at 2:07 PM EDT on September 26, 2008
No, I saw them with VGMtrans.
by Knurek at 2:48 PM EDT on September 26, 2008
You can mute the tracer's output, so it doesn't bother your listening habbits.

Config->Sound Settings->Switch to None from Direct Sound Interface

Restarting Desmume is needed IIRC.

Super Princess Peach is on the to-do list again.

There, now off to do something useful.
by marioman at 4:26 PM EDT on September 26, 2008
Thanks UF. I'll be looking forward to it.

Work on clean2sf has started. Unlike Desmume 2sf, it's command line and will support multiple threads, meaning you can get shit done faster!

This also means I need to modify the Desmume emulation core, and add a bunch of crap to it in the process.

Other To-do's in this order:
- better ripkit
- SPP rerip
by agu fungus at 5:10 PM EDT on September 27, 2008
Say, I checked the Kirby 2sf set, and it seems that at least one track is missing. It's numbered as 54 in the sound test.
by Knurek at 5:16 PM EDT on September 27, 2008
Which Kirby, there are three sets.
by agu fungus at 6:15 PM EDT on September 27, 2008
Super Star Ultra. I noticed that when I was comparing the 2sf set to the sound test.

Thanks UF! Really appreciated. My interest in 2sf has be reborn as of late so this will be very helpful.
by Omochao at 3:50 PM EDT on September 28, 2008
Could be that 54 is SFX?
by Lunar at 4:06 PM EDT on September 28, 2008
if it is a sound effect, then yeah, no surprises there. i only included the SEQ_blah files (0-113), not the SE_blah files (113-500 or more). if there are tunes missing then they were labelled incorrectly.
Kirby: Canvas Curse tagging by Electric Keet at 1:54 PM EDT on September 29, 2008
(Oops... accidentally added a blank post there, first!)

Lunar: I'll get right on that "Kirby: Canvas Curse" set, now that the rest of my time isn't consumed by pesky social obligations.

Also: Cookies! And beer.

You could probably use the track names from the SPC set at snesmusic for the most part.
