Egad!
Thanks for testing it.

You're probably going to laugh, but I just tested 64th note 0.09 on Winamp via Wine, and it works fine. ;-) I would still appreciate a native port (although I know that's a whole lot of work you aren't going to do), but hey, at least it's working. ^_^. Man, Wine never ceases to amaze me.

USF Central 2.0 is now online. Yep, I finally went and got a domain name. And the links work (at least unless you use up my 50 GB per month).

Ah, thanks you, I had completely forgot about that, it will be removed.

I'd love you for removing this annoying window announcing that "Seeking backwards is not supported" because it has to be clicked away every time. I really don't think it is necessary to tell this the users of your plugin as they can see that it is not supported when the seeking bar jumps back to the current time.

Just ran a few tests.
  1. I put in my entire USF collection on my playlist with shuffle turned on. I held down ctrl, alt, and page down for about 30 seconds. Both 0.08 and 0.09 successfully played without crashing.
  2. Put on a Pilotwings USF immediately after a Perfect Dark USF. 0.09 played Pilotwings just fine, 0.08 did not play Pilotwings.
  3. Put in Chrono Cross PSF "Lost Fragments", followed by Perfect Dark USF "Training Room", set to shuffle, and held down ctrl, alt, and page down. 0.09 never crashed. 0.08 crashed repeatedly with unknown opcode.
  4. Put in my entire PSF and my entire USF collection, and pressed ctrl, alt, and page down while in shuffle mode. 0.08 crashed within 2 seconds, coughing up a "memory could not be read" crash when shifting from Tales of Eternia PSF "Royal Observatory", to an unknown USF. 0.09 survived the stress test.
  5. And speaking from past experience, Winamp would often crash with varying degrees of severity (some crashes resulted in me having to reboot my PC, others were the minor invalid opcode, taking Winamp with it.) when running 0.08. 0.08 was unstable to a degree that I couldn't keep USFs in my playlist, as my playlist wouldn't last more than a couple of hours before crashing. 0.09 has been perfectly stable for as long as I've used it.
So... yeah, I would say that at least for me, the problem is fixed. 0.09 has taken everything that I've thrown at it, even when I TRIED to make it crash.
Posted at 7:42 PM UTC on April 14, 2005 by hcs:
In the interest of science could those of you now no longer experiencing problems switch back to the old version and see if the problems come back?
I know that I'm asking you to crash tings and I'll understand if you don't, but I'd like to establish without a doubt that this is the reason for clearing up the problem.
Posted at 1:20 PM UTC on April 14, 2005 by Lunar:
Good job hcs. I've experienced no problems with it at all since upgrading. I'll continue to try and do random things that might force crashes but I think it's very stable now. Awesome! Hopefully more rips will roll on some time.
Posted at 6:22 AM UTC on April 13, 2005 by Anonymous:
well, I think the plugin is nearly perfect as it stands. The most important thing for me in a plugin is that it plays the music it's supposed to. And it does that wonderfully now.

But since you asked, what I would appreciate the most is the addition of a "track" field in the main plugin, as well as the ability to edit the raw tag from within the plugin editor, rather than it being read only. :)

And I'm probably REALLY pushing it here... but a Linux port? =)

Good to hear, are there any other features you (or anyone else) would like to see added before I release 009?
Posted at 6:06 AM UTC on April 12, 2005 by Anonymous:
On a completely different note, I've been using USFs interchangeably from all my other media types for the last few days since the beta came out, and it works flawlessly. USF is now a perfectly valid filetype for me to have in my playlist. Thank you very much HCS.

Yeah, I really searched long, but I found out that the composer of the soundtrack is the legendary Akihiro Mori, who allready composed soundtracks like Wonder Project J and J2, 7th Saga 2: Mystic Ark or Gokinjo Bouken Tai. Hope I can finish my work in the next couple of days, so stay tuned :)

Were you able to determine the name of the artist who wrote the music?

Hey hcs, I nearly completed the Zool set. You did allready the minimal tagging, and I'll do the rest. It's very hard to figure out an complete japanese game, but I translated the names into english and then it works. Luckily on of my friends was born in Japan so he translated all names of the game for me. I'll send the complete set to you if it is finished!

Plugin seems to be much much better behaved now. :) I'll keep USFs in my playlist for the next few days, and let you know if there's any crashes at all. So far, I am nothing but pleased, as you seem to have fixed the problem. =)

Thanks for coming back, thanks for fixing the plugin, and thanks for listening to me.

Yeah, I mean the general crashing bugs that seem to happen without cause. Thanks for testing!
Posted at 3:37 PM UTC on April 6, 2005 by Will:
When you say "other crashy bugs", are you referring to Perfect Dark and Pilotwings related bugs, or just 64th Note bugs in general? I've been able to play my usfs along with my other formats with no crashes using your beta version so far, but that could be a coincidence though, sometimes it takes a while before anything goes wrong. Still testing...
Posted at 2:52 AM UTC on April 6, 2005 by hcs:
I've found at least the source of the Perfect Dark to Pilotwings bug, it turns out the Status register (stored as the 33rd in the COP0 registers array) is not saved in a Project 64 save state. Thus it wasn't loaded, and its value depended entirely on what it used to be. I'm hoping this might fix the other crashy bugs...
Help test this and bug report, please

If someone could rip the music of Mario Tennis, I'd really, really appreciate it. I attempted to start a line-in recording of the music, but there are too many sound effects that can't be removed, no sound effect off option, and there are some sweet songs in that game...

Posted at 8:23 PM UTC on March 18, 2005 by hcs:
The preliminary set of Banjo Kazooie has been tagged by a few different people. The only problem is that, as you may have noticed from playing the game, certain songs have variants that fade into each other as you move about a level. In the USF set all these variants play at once. It is a similar situation to the multiple versions of Dire, Dire Docks, but it is a much more noticeable problem. If you can't wait you can get the preliminary set and use one of the tag sets I've been sent:
Posted at 7:06 PM UTC on March 18, 2005 by Matt:
If noone is working on new USFs then at least finish those untagged sets. I have been waiting for Banjo-Kazooie to be finished, but it's still "tagging in progress". What's taking so long?
Posted at 3:26 AM UTC on March 16, 2005 by Anonymous:
No luck for me. Visual Studio 2003 won't even compile the rsp library. It coughs up a list of errors a mile long, and I don't have time to figure out the root cause, when I don't have time to read all the source code. (and understand it)

I wish I had an idea how to rip USF. I don't really understand the specification stuff. :( I'd like to have USFs of Pokémon Stadium 1 & 2 games. I'm a collector of Pokémon game music, but had no luck with capturing it, because I couldn't disable all those sound effects. :( Someone please make a rip of these games! ^^

Well, I'm a C/C++ programmer, but I've been extremely hesitant to look into the plugin, as GBA is far more of my territory than the N64. And I am an extremely weak assembly programmer.

Also, my free time is extremely limited right now, and I've never made a winamp plugin before. But if you can provide a working link to the source code, I might take a look at it. It would be worth some of my time at least if I could put USFs in my playlist again. But this would require a LOT of learning on my part, and I am not sure I can devote that much time.
Posted at 5:54 PM UTC on March 14, 2005 by hcs:
I've tried to fix the plugin, I'll try again, but the bug doesn't want to submit to my probing. I encourage you to pester any C programmers you might know to take a look.

Alright. Just watch me resurrect it. As soon as I know enough about coding and such, it will be done, and the people will cheer! I'll get back to you in five years or so.
Posted at 5:55 AM UTC on March 14, 2005 by Anonymous:
hcs... you are still going to fix the plugin though, right? I can live with USF being dead until I can figure out enough about the console to create my own. But I would like to have a working plugin still. It would make the format far less dead. ;)
Posted at 5:05 AM UTC on March 14, 2005 by hcs:
The USF files I was directly linking to were hosted by my university, but since I've been abusing my priviliges they've cut off my access to that server. You can still get any USFs I was hosting at the other mirrors listed on the USF page.

Feel free to resurrect USF yourself if you're concerned with its demise.

I will second (third? fourth? fifth? umpteenth?) the request for a Blast Corps USF soundtrack. The game had AWESOME music. Combolations to all who have done USF rips (especially Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and the rest of the Rare games). But I want Blast Corps darnit!
Posted at 7:35 PM UTC on March 4, 2005 by hcs:
Ordered list time again!
  1. The idea of 64th Note is to accurately reproduce the music of a game, upsampling the audio goes against that
  2. Mixing is done by the game's own software, getting it to output at a different rate would require tweaking each game
  3. In "performance" mode (audio HLE), when the mixing is done by 64th Note, there is theoretically the option to upsample, but I don't feel like torturing myself with figuring that out when I have crash bugs to fix
  4. If you mean just a straight upsampling (i.e. doubling 22 KHz to 44) there wouldn't be an increase in sound quality anyway unless...
  5. ...I added some interpolation filters, and I have no intention of opening that can of worms
If you're really interested there are output plugins that will do what is mentioned in 5.
Posted at 4:11 PM UTC on March 4, 2005 by Anonymous:
Would it be possible to add an option to output the songs at a higher sampling rate?

You're my hero for creating the USF file format, it's great, nothing can beat it and the N64 music is some of the best, ever. Now, having said that I must put in an extremely and painfully urgent request for the Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon soundtrack, please!!!

Hmm, reading some of this, it does sound like your life is busy right now hcs. I shouldn't let it worry you too much :). "Excellent. Thank you hcs. =) Maybe I might actually try to learn enough N64 assembly to do Wave Race 64 if the plugin no longer crashes." A Wave Race 64 set is one I've been wanting since the format appeared - that'd be brilliant to have. I do have a CD rip but I'd rather have USFs ;). If you do plan to do that, good luck Diddy Kong Racing and either of the Mystical Ninja games would be great too. Blast Corps/Vigilante 8/8 2nd Offense/Yoshi's Story/Mischief Makers/etc. There's lots that I'd like to see get ripped. Anyway it really is great work on the format so far. I think we're really lucky to have the format in the first place anyway. Just gotta hope interest in ripping rises.

I'd like to thank you guys for the work you've gone though getting all that N64 music out of the roms. Any plans to extract the music from Diddy Kong Racing or Mystical Ninja, perchance?
Posted at 7:22 AM UTC on March 2, 2005 by Anonymous:
Confirming here. Same behaviour. But I will note that I tried with several Pilotwings and Perfect Dark USFs, and it exhibited the same behaviour each time.

I think it's fairly obvious at this point that 64th note is not initializing itself correctly upon playing a new track.

I've noticed something odd, when I play Perfect Dark - Dark Combat and then Pilot Wings 64 - Gyrocopter - Landing Accomplished playback freezes every time. Clearly something freaky is happening here...

I've run some tests, successfully reproduced the crash a few times, and I suspect that the bug is within the RSP recompiler, where I've found problems before. I'll take a closer look at it and see if I can't resolve this.

Posted at 2:12 AM UTC on March 1, 2005 by Anonymous:
okay, I just put USFs in my playlist again for the first time in months, in the interests of producing a reproduceable crash. My playlist is about 15,000 songs, and whenever there's USFs in there, a crash is inevitable.

My first crash is:
Unknown x86 Opcode
location D46FFDF
loc 987FFDF
fhfgh2

This was caused when Winamp shifted from a Chrono Cross PSF (Lost Fragments) to a Perfect Dark (Combat Simulator Menu) USF. I got that dialog, and then Winamp promptly crashed. I was able to reproduce the crash by loading in the PSF and the USF into the playlist (2 songs only), and setting it to shuffle, and repeat. I pressed the next track button until Winamp crashed once more. (It took about 20 clicks).

My system configuration:
Athlon 64 3500+
1GB PC3200 Dual Channel
Windows XP Pro (32 bit)

My Winamp configuration:

I don't know what "in_oldskool.dll" is, but I was just simply stating the errors I had. I wasn't complaining as I think its great that we can listen to N64 music directly and not from some old mp3.
Posted at 6:57 PM UTC on February 27, 2005 by Mouser X:
I've had problems with 64th Note as well. However, the occurance of those problems is such that they are of no concern to me. Generally, it's either memory related, (so I need more RAM, oh well), or I attribute the problem to other screwy Winamp plugins that I have installed. Now that I have a faster computer (and I've increased my page file size :P ), the crashes are even less.

Anyone here use the plugin "in_oldskool.dll?" That one causes me a lot more problems than 64th Note ever has, even in the earliest, buggiest phases. I have about 10-15 (maybe more, since I can't varify right now) input plugins installed for Winamp. I also have something like, 10 general plugins installed. However, I never use DSP plugins, so if you do, perhaps that's where your problem arises from (I mention that as a possibility, though I really have no idea).

As for switching between songs from one game and another, and even different music formats altogether, that's the problem I get with "in_odlskool.dll." When it comes to 64th Note, I believe there is room for improvement, as problems do occur, occasionaly. However, based on my understanding, those problems are more from Project 64 (which 64th Note is based very heavily on) than they are from HCS. When HCS started this project, he needed a lot of help to get things started. He's never written a Winamp plugin before, so that was completly new to him. I think that, based on what we have, and what HCS started with, HCS should be pretty proud of what has been accomplished here. Those of you who say other wise, I would recommend that you try to do something similar. If you're a programmer, then by all means, access the source code, and see if you can clean it up. I'm sure HCS would be very very grateful to you if you could help out there. As for me, I am no programmer, though I would like to be. I've looked into ripping some USF sets, and I believe I am capable, though I don't have the time needed to practice (through trial and error) to get it right, or to even do it at all. If I can do it, with minimal coding knowledge, I'm sure that some of you could do the same. Look at someone42's PSF ripping guide (found in the PSF section at http://www.zophar.net) to find info on R3000 assembly. Read up on it, then get a dissassembler, and a hex editor, and start to dig in. I agree it's tough at first, but once things stop looking like complete gibberish, and start having order to them, then you're on the right track. Anyway, HCS, thank you so much for all you've done. Though I may be missing some USF sets I'd like to have, I will be forever grateful to you for providing the ones I have wanted the most. With things as they are, people can add to the ripped sets, so long as they put forth the effort to experiment and practice. All the information is there, just not found easily (yet?). Thanks again, and good luck with your current projects, whatever those may be. Mouser X over and out.

I've had crashes when I leave Winamp open (after playing a couple of tracks) for a while, it will just crash when I try to play them again. Also when I play music from one game and try to play music from another game (Banjo Kazooie's preliminary) it would crash.
Posted at 8:28 AM UTC on February 27, 2005 by hcs:
It's rare I use an ordered list but I feel this is a "number 1, number 2" situation:
  1. I didn't write the majority of this code
  2. I don't understand the majority of this code
  3. I can't reproduce the crashes (I've never seen a need for reboot, for example, and just now I tried to get the thing to crash with no result)
  4. When I did get the crash it was at random and I couldn't get any useful debug info anyway
If you can give me any scenario which could point me to where the problem is I'd be very happy to fix it. I hate having crashy code out there with my name on it.
Posted at 4:37 AM UTC on February 27, 2005 by Anonymous:
hcs, I know that you're probably more than a little bitter about us unappreciative whelps after you to finish what you started. But right now what we have is a few N64 soundtracks, and a plugin that crashes when you try to play them about half the time. It almost WOULD be better if you hadn't started the project, as it would have saved me a few reboots.

That's not to say that I have no respect for you, and that I don't appreciate what you've done. I'm a programmer myself, and I have a large amount of unfinished work under my belt. But right now, you have a fairly large audience, who just want you to finish the plugin at the very least. Nobody blames Neil Corlett for essentially stopping work on PSF after a period, as his plugin works.

Would you rather have waited around for another ten years until someone else put together anything that worked at all?

Sorry HCS , But it is poor to start a project like that and to stop it like you do it now. very very sad.. PdZ

Rather than expecting new rips from me, be surprised if I do anything else."

thats a real shame. i really encourage you not to give up. perhaps when your workload subsidises, youll have more desire to rip soundtracks. i hope that's the case anyway - as said, its wonderful what youve achieved thus far for the ripping community as a whole, and itd be great to have you remembered positively for it.

i dont think anyone has the right to expect miracles and leaps and bounds from you though. just take it as it comes i guess. alike you i have access to all the game soundtracks ill need in mp3 format but i honestly dont see the same appeal. i wished other people with a grasp on how to rip usfs would come forward. i really do.

Come on HCS. We need your help for a little bit more. I mean, USFs at present are useable, but not much else. I don't put any in my playlist because your plugin crashes. And I don't use them at all on Linux.

I mean, do you want to be remembered as the guy who gave us a buggy plugin and a format that quickly fell into disrepair? Or do you want to be the guy who is remembered as starting off a much requested music format and a plugin that people are still using to this day? (imagine this being said sometime in the future).

are there likely to be any new rips soon? there hasnt been any new for quite some time.. it seems a shame to write such a great format then not actually bring its potential out. i fully support you but the lack of soundtracks is killing me :(. theres so many great soundtracks thatd be nice to see ripped... extreme-g indeed being one of them.

Change your output plugin to the DirectSound or waveOut plugin.
Posted at 12:34 AM UTC on February 19, 2005 by Vints:
ok, thanks man. i can convert it now.

i just have one question about the plugint. how do i turn it off after i'm done converting tracks? right now i keep uninstalling the plugin after converting so i can listen to the audio.
Posted at 8:38 PM UTC on February 18, 2005 by hcs:
ok, maybe this is someone else, so I'll explain it again:

You have to use the Disk Writer plugin, set it to convert the output to 16 bit 22050 KHz stereo PCM. Then convert the .WAV files that produces to MP3 using an external program such as LAME.
Posted at 7:30 PM UTC on February 18, 2005 by Vints:
matt: i have it set to convert at the highest quality in the config options, but it won't work.
i'm using Chun-Yu Shei's mp3 output plugin from winamp.com, and i don't know if i need a better converter or if i'm doing something wrong.
Posted at 6:10 PM UTC on February 18, 2005 by hcs:
I have the same problem with Zool in that LAME won't take the raw WAVs generated, you have to convert them to 22,050 KHz in order for it to do anything.
I've emailed him about this so the issue should be worked out.
Posted at 4:44 PM UTC on February 18, 2005 by Matt:
All you have to do is to go to your Winamp output converter and choose a higher quality for the Mp3s (or WAVs) from there. There's no need to rip the PD USFs again. And they cannot be ripped to higher quality, since they're in the quality the music was in the game. (Maybe someone else can explain this better if you didn't understand what I mean).

hello.
i can't convert any perfect dark usf's to mp3, but i am able to convert other n64 games to
mp3 like mario 64 and f-zero 64.
i think the reason my output converter won't allow it to convert is because your perfect
dark usf's are at too low of a ripped quality (i.e. 16000HZ, 22kbps). i think this might be
true since i'm able to convert the other games which were ripped at a higher quality (i.e.
16000HZ, 32kbps).
could you rip the perfect dark tracks to that higher quality?
Posted at 5:46 PM UTC on February 17, 2005 by hcs:
I refer you to this page about WAVs, specifically the "playlist chunk" section. It isn't necessary to convert a WAV to PSF2, if it is formatted correctly and there's a compatible player it should be able to handle the looping.
Posted at 5:27 PM UTC on February 17, 2005 by Mouser X:
About converting MP3/WAVs to MIDI. Though that can't be done, you could, technically, convert a MP3/WAV to *.IT or *.MOD. However, I can't think of any reason space would be saved, as you would still have to include all of the original audio data into the *.IT or *.MOD file. In fact, chances are very high that you would actually use more space than the original MP3/WAV used.

Of course, I could be wrong about converting WAVs into *.IT or *.mod files, as there might be a limit on sample size. But, based on what I know about those formats, it would be reasonably possible.

The reason I bring that up is because I've been wondering if it would be possible to convert a MP3/WAV into a PSF2 streamed file. I don't know of there would be any space saved, but it might, as you wouldn't have to have all of the audio data present, just the 1st loop. So, that would cut the file length in half (more or less), but it could be looped because it's a PSF2 (you'd have to be able to specify a loop point when converting the file).

I can see 2 ways to do this. Obviously the better way would be for someone to write a PS2 driver that plays MP3s, but chances are that's not going to happen. The other method would be to convert the MP3s into ADPCM format and use the CSL ripped games (most of the streamed files, if not all of them, are CSL rips). Using the drivers from those games, you might be able to, basically, replace your converted data with the original music files.

Obviously, neither of these ideas are very likely, and even if there was space saved it wouldn't be much. So, though it may be possible, it is almost certainly not worth the effort it would require to do it.

That's just a thought I had on the subject. Any idea about the feasability of this? Like, as far as anyone here knows, my ideas are, basically, sound. It's just not likely to happen. Is that right, or does anyone know better? Just wondering, as I said. Thanks in advance for your answer(s). Mouser X over and out.

@Andrexide: thanks, but no, such a thing is no more possible than converting MP3 to MIDI.

Hey Everyone !! Many thanks to those that have put the time to * TAG/RIP * the USF formats to the games we Love and cant actually get Soundtracks or Download via P2P.. I have some cravings to music im after: 1) Turok-Dinosaur Hunter 2) Turok 2-Seeds of Evil 3) Killer Instinct Gold Ive been collecting Video Game music over the years and Turok is soo hard to find music for. And Also: Has anyone thought about converting Mp3/Wav to a USF format to save crap load of memory. Is that possible... " Well keep up the GOOD work USF People "

Tagging for dummies newbies:
  1. Get Neill Corlett's PSFPoint
  2. Write a batch file with the following structure:
    psfpoint "-title=Game Name" "-artist=Composer" "-year=20xx" "-copyright=Company Name" "-usfby=Ripper" *.miniusf
    psfpoint "-title=Track 1" -length=1:00 -fade=10 "Track 1.miniusf"
    psfpoint "-title=Track 2" -length=1:10 -fade=10 "Track 2.miniusf"

You could leave out the specifications for each track if you want to tag them directly in 64th Note, which you can do via the tag editor.
  3. Run the batch, check, repeat as needed.

I just saw the update concerning Conker and I wanted to say to any rippers out there that if someone was willing to rip Bad Fur Day or show me how to do it, I would tag and test every Conker USF you could send me, so as soon as someone finishes, I'd love to tag the set. If anyone starts ripping this, please, please let me know how it's going. My email is tucker.miller_at_gmail.com(I'd give you an invite to Gmail as well; 1000 megs of space, I don't think there are attachment limits, and it's very, very convenient to use), replace _at_ with @.

Just wanted to say congrats to everyone involved; I wish I could help, but I can't really teach myself N64 hacking. Also, if people wouldn't mind, a couple requests of mine would be Diddy Kong Racing, Conker's Bad Fur Day(this would certainly be my first choice if I had mad hacking skillz like you guys, as its soundtrack is brilliant, almost impossible to record without sound effects, and there are many songs that never got put on the soundtrack), and Mario Party 1. Thanks a billion(and if someone would be willing to give me a bit of help with the hacking(My AIM is fonzie is da man), or some good links that would help me learn, I would be very, very grateful), you guys rock.

Hm... The Rayman 2 Rip is still ready and Parasyte seems to have some Problems with this Rip. He wrote me: "Hi, thanks. I need to go through the set some time and check to see if if any tracks were removed, and if they were I will need to rerip the whole thing. Also, I need to number each track, similar to the way I numbered my previous releases. (Mario Kart 64, Beetle Adventure Racing, etc) You have done a very fine job. Have you written a batch file to do all of the timing and tagging? If you have, I would like to have it. That way you won't have to do a whole lot more work when I re-rip the set. :) Thanks!" I dont even understand his problem right... I think there is all correct but he cannot be satisfied with his Rip?! I hope , that in a timerange between today and in 3 months (hopefully not) he FINALLY will decide to publish the Rip on THIS Site for all.# =/

I agree. There definitely should be USF rips of those two Goemon games. I Am Impact! from Mystical Ninja is one of the best vgm songs ever. Jet Force Gemini, Diddy Kong Racing, Turok 2 and the two Fighters Destiny games (anyone else like the music in these two?) should also be ripped if possible. So if anyone is working on USF right now, please consider these games. Thank you.
Posted at 3:42 AM UTC on January 28, 2005 by Boiler Bro Joe:
You know, I'm listening to my Goemon's Great Adventure soundtrack (some tracks of which I sent to a couple people on this board) and realizing how much I really do want a USF rip of this game. The soundtrack was great, but each song was way too short and they left out some of my favorite music - the songs that play in towns at night. My guess would be the the sound files for the game would be somewhat linked, or at least repetitve, since the music was very time sensitive. But getting the songs and editing them into full tracks would be awesome. When I first got the soundtrack to GGA, I was very stubborn in thinking that the music could never beat the excellence of Mystical Ninja 64. Well I was wrong. If anyone likes this music as much as I (and apparently a few others) do, a USF from either Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, or Goemon's Great Adventure would be much appreciated. (And don't forget Body Harvest!!)

There is no Controller Pack Menu , you can delete or copy your data , but the Background music is the music from the Title. And Rare didn´t use the same tune/track for a Level Ending and a Menu.Rare made their games perfect!!! This tune will be played ONLY in the "Status Screen" (I`ve posted) , after the completed mission "Carrington Institute". Iam really sure.

If anyone is paying attention to this... If anyone rips the USFs for Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, Bomberman 64, Extreme-G and/or Gauntlet Legends, contact me. I can tag them.
Email Address is: ShiningAmethyst @ cox.net. (remove spaces to use.) Thanks in advance.

You can request USFs wherever you want, the trick is to get someone who is looking for games to rip to see them.

If you email me about Turok I may be able to hook you up with some music.
Posted at 2:23 AM UTC on January 14, 2005 by Anonymous:
Where do we request rips? If we request them in the guestbook, I'd appreciate it if someone ripped Paper Mario. It has a very nice soundtrack.

WOW... you guys rock! I can't imagine myself being able to do the stuff you do. How do you separate sound effects from the music? Wouldn't both play? The reason I ask is because the game Turok: Dinosaur Hunter uses sound effects in the background music and I was wondering if it would be able to have USFs extracted. I'm currently working on a Half-Life 2 mod that will be using the Lost Lands as part of the story and I need music that is as close to the original as possible (It doesn't help that Acclaim is gone!) Thanks to you guys I now have the original music to both GE and PD! (both are also going to be used) THANK YOU!

No prob ;-) I'm happy, that you like my sets! Well, about the genre, I didn't know what for genre was needed - the game or the music genre, so I decided to write the game genre. But Parasyte is still checking it, I think. Maybe he changed it. Thanks!

Ah crud, sorry about that Maxwill... I sort of figured I had it wrong. Anyway, thanks again. Mouser X over and out.
Posted at 9:00 AM UTC on January 10, 2005 by Mouser X:
Actually, the "genre" tag is used how the tagger wants it used. I've seen both ways, game-type, as well as music type. Generally though, I see it used for game type more than I see it for music type(when the tag is on an emulated audio file). So, in other words, you did great Maxim. Thanks for the help in getting sets released! Mouser X over and out. P.S. Hopefully I didn't mispell anyone's name...
Posted at 8:46 AM UTC on January 10, 2005 by Raz:
@Maxwill your tags are cool however the genre refers to the music genre, not the game genre. ie, you tagged "action-adventure" it should be "video game" or "chiptune"

If you could just time the tracks so that they loop before they fade it would be a lot better. No one hates you for your attempt. The track names are excellent, only the timings are wrong.
Posted at 12:26 AM UTC on January 6, 2005 by PdZ:
Hello.
I timed some Rayman 2 Tracks EXTRA a little bit shorter because , most of the songs dont really take so long in the game. And the songs are much too great sometimes that they repeat very weird. Its not a fault , its because of the exactness to the Reallity.Iam sorry but i thought ,that the persons who want to hear the soundtrack want to hear it like the game it uses. Pls understand that ! If u want , i coult retagg them like HCS or Parasyte it wants! Pls dont hate me for this "mistake" =((

Wow! The two Castlevania Sets are really FANTASTIC! Great music and great tagging. Only on both the .usflib is missing, so you can't play them, until you downloaded the .usflib from the untagged version. Will somebody fix that? And keep on this great site!!!

I Tagged , timed and renamed it but Parasyte , the original Ripper , dont have time to check this rip.So it will be a long time (maybe forever) in the Preliminary Rip Collection. I've been wondering if anyone's going to make USF sets for Extreme-G and Extreme-G 2 - two games that have great music but not so great gameplay. Like others here, I look forward to the release of a Diddy Kong Racing USF set. I'd gladly tag and time whatever I can.

Finally, a way to listen to n64 soundtracks. Some of them, i always felt, were too good to forget about.
Posted at 2:33 AM UTC on December 21, 2004 by Mouser X:
Well shoot. It certainly looks that way. I tagged the Star Fox set as well. However, this time, I can't tell if it's my fault or not. It might have been labeled like that when I got it, and I didn't bother to change it. Either way, sorry for letting that slip by.

As for re-tagging it, there's really no need, since there's a utility called psfpoint that can alter all the tags of any *.xSF file withing a specified directory. In other words, fixing the problem is as easy as typing "psfpoint -game="Star Fox 64" *.miniusf" and you'll be done (You could could use "Star Fox" if you wanted as well, I suppose. However, I do think it would be better to differentiate the difference between the SNES one and the N64 one). Anyway, thanks for noticing that. Maybe HCS can fix it, or something. Mouser X over and out.
Posted at 12:02 AM UTC on December 21, 2004 by Vague Rant:
I guess as long as we're talking about tags and times, I should mention that Star Fox is two words. I don't know if anyone cares enough to fix that. I'll re-tag them and send them into hcs if anyone wants me to.
Posted at 8:01 AM UTC on December 20, 2004 by Mouser X:
D'oh! I didn't get the spacing right with the "< br >" Oh well. Sorry about the poorly spaced, long post. :( Mouser X out, again.
Posted at 7:59 AM UTC on December 20, 2004 by Mouser X:
M: What HCS means is that the people who ripped it in the first place are checking it to see if your tags and times live up to what they want to hear/see. Sometimes it goes through, sometimes it doesn't. The PSF2 set of FF XI ran into this problem, and had to be redone. However, chances are that it will get approved, eventually. The rippers have a life, and are probably busy with right now. I'm sure it's in the works.
By the way, I'm glad to see that there's some progress around here, at least in getting rips timed and tagged.
I have considered ripping a 64 game, and I think I can do it. I run into a few problems though. The biggest one is time constraints (I have very little free time), and the other is that I have a 333 mhz PC with no 3D hardware. That makes it rather painful to emulated the N64 on my machine. Of course, knowing next to no assembly doesn't help either. Surprisingly though, you don't need to have an extensive knowledge in that area. Just enough to be able to tell what, to some degree is going on (That coming from someone who doesn't really know what he's doing in the first place, but is willing to blunder around to find out).
As for knowing what to do, I have at least passed that point, thanks to some helpful people at the PSF_rippers Yahoo group (as well as the PSF Rippers chat room). Now, I just need to find the time (and some R4000 instruction threads), and get to it.
What I'm saying is that, if you're going to try your hand at ripping, great! I'm glad to hear it! Good luck, and don't let things set you back. As for learning assembly, I think you can catch on fairly quick, as long as you're very attentive to your study materials. I recommend giving someone42's PSF ripping guide a look over. It can be found at http://www.zophar.net/psf/ It will provide a rough idea as to what ripping is, how to do it, and some good links that will get you started for software needed, and some assembly instructions that you can download off the web.
Sorry for a VERY long post. Hopefully though, someone here will find it helpful/motivational. Good luck, and I hope to see more people getting started on (and finishing) rips. Mouser X over and out.
P.S. Sorry for the spelling errors on LoZ: OoT USF set. I had no idea they were there. Luckly, someone caught it, and it has been fixed a long time ago.

The N64 uses MIPS R4000 assembly, which is quite similar to R3000.

Note: on usf.emuhost.net are two sets tagged by me - Castlevania 64 and Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness, but of these sets the .usflib file is missing, so you can't listen to the songs. You must download the untagged sets and copy the .usflib to the tagged folder, then you can play the songs with winamp. I hasn't worked to send the complete set with the usflib, because the file was too big ;-)

Something you might try is srip, which can extract samples from Mario 64 and some other games.

Hey, I'm a composer and well, I've heard all kinds of funky sounds that I would LOVE to use in some of my compositions - So my question is this - Could you make an automated sound-extractor, not a USF library extractor, but a sound extractor? @Stefan Hi Stefan! Ich bin auch aus Deutschland, genauer gesagt aus Husum. Wieviele Songs hast du beim Castlevania Soundtrack? Alle? Es gibt ja viele gleiche Stücke.
Posted at 6:32 PM UTC on November 21, 2004 by Stefan:
@Razoola and Maxwill:
1. I also used the OST to time and tag the set and I know every wonderful corner of this game. Don't be afraid. I'm German and work without any mistakes.
2. Parasyte answered my request with the following e-mail: "Hello, There may not be any additional changes to make, but I'm not entirely certain. You could always create a batch file to time, tag and rename the entire set quickly and easily. That is my suggestion. I'm not sure when I will be able to look at the set again. After I do, I'll be able to declare it final, or not. Thanks for your help!"
The rest of Maxwill's questions have already been answered in my previous post.

@hcs: It would be great if you set up another column called "Timer/tagger needed?" next to the rips. Something like this here would never happen again.
Posted at 6:18 PM UTC on November 21, 2004 by Maxwill:
@Stefan Why do you say this now? You could have written it in this guestbook before, or have you? And why isn't the soundtrack here to download? Is there any problem? I own the original soundtrack from "Castlevania", so I know almoust all of the song names (not all songs are on the original soundtrack cd). But I don't got, how I can upload it? Someone says on msn messenger, but I don't understand it...
Posted at 2:31 PM UTC on November 21, 2004 by Razoola:
@Stefan if you did castlevani why isn't it mirrored yet? also, maybe Maxwill has the correct names for the tracks, so it is still worth submitting them
Posted at 12:12 PM UTC on November 21, 2004 by Stefan:
@Maxwill: I've already made Castlevania. But "Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness" is still left. Also you should ask the rippers before tagging and timing the sets. And you will have to make a batch file, since this is better than always renaming all files if a little mistake was made. Just google for "batch files". It's pretty easy to learn how to make them.

I'm farily confident that I could tag Banjo Kazooie, since I have over 100 of the songs recorded right from the game and named. Now the question is, how do I go about doing that? I'm not a computer wiz. And also, for the love of God would someone please release Rayman 2? Even if the tracks are just numbers?
Posted at 5:54 PM UTC on November 18, 2004 by wrldwzrd89:
I'm frustrated because I'd love to tag at least some of the "preliminary rip complete" soundtracks, but I'm not familiar with any of the games. I'm stuck until a new rip that I can tag comes out or someone points me to a resource where I can find the names of the songs. Timing isn't a problem - that I know how to do even if I don't know the name of the song.
Posted at 4:41 PM UTC on November 18, 2004 by Krijy:
I've previously made an MP3 collection of the soundtracks from Perfect Dark, so I know all the times for the soundtracks. I can tag all the soundtracks with the right times.
Posted at 6:48 AM UTC on November 18, 2004 by ZioMatrix589:
Hey everyone. For Perfect Dark, all of the songs listed in the Combat Simulator Advanced Music settings have the file name fixed. I just don't know how to do the timing stuff. Do I go into View File Info and put the time in there or do I make something completely different? As for all of the cutscene music and stuff, I didn't do those. All I renamed was the main stuff.

Hey, excellent job on the Winamp plug-in and USF dumps. I have downloaded and played a few games and they're all very, very good. They sound as good as the soundtrack. (Except for a few that are a bit off-tempo, but you already knew that.)
I was wondering if and when the USF dumps of Pokémon Stadium 1 & 2 would be posted? I started to do a game music recording line-in from my N64 for these two games, but there are too many sound effects. It would be great if I could just use Winamps .wav output disk writer instead. ^__^
I post a lot on a gaming forum board and there's a lot of people there such as myself that are really into game music. I know that to listen to the music on your computer, all you need is the Winamp plug-in and the USF files, but there are a lot of people such as myself that like to have their music in .MP3 format so it can be burned onto a CD. (Which I will listen to in my car. ;D ) I started a thread asking for help on finding all the tracks in the two Pokémon Stadium games for my line-in recording, but now it's down to the USF files. http://www.gamingforce.com/forums/showthread.php?t=54695
I would be really, really appreciate if someone could dump the USF files of Pokémon Stadium 1 & 2! Thanks!

@T-oastbro-T: Thanks mate, that's a great idea to get the songs playing on an mp3 player (if i'm gonna buy one, that is... ;) ) but i actually meant ripping the instruments from the USF like Marios 'Itsa me' (stupid example - it's not in the USF) or like kinda those nice choirs/voices from Zelda (sure there would be more work to put these into a synth or sampler) or some other unusual sounds. Umm, i finally got PD working... :)

dekar, you should try SNESmusic.org. While generally much the same thing as Zophar's content, it gets it marginally sooner, and most (if not all) of them are timed. Untimed SPCs are awful. Fanfares repeating for two minutes grow bothersome.

@Genyo T: Hmm, posted it already, but as some postings seem to be lost, once again. To convert the USF-files into .wav-files, just load them with Winamp using the 64th Note Plugin. Go to Preferences---->Plug-Ins--->Output and select the DiskWriter Plugin, which will convert everything, you'd usually hear with an ordinary Directsound-Output-Plugin, into wave-files. You can specify the output directory if you like. Make sure, that the playtime of the tracks is limited in the 64th Note Plugin, otherwise you could get a huuuuge, neverending wave file. Press Play.^^ Excuse my English. ;-)

The Ocarina of Time USF rip is from ROM v1.0. Maybe you are thinking of a later version rather than an earlier one.
Posted at 1:51 AM UTC on November 10, 2004 by Vague Rant:
Zio, early versions of Ocarina had the song you're talking about, with the chanting or "Goron voices," as you put it. The version in the USF is the later version. The original track has been requested earlier (somewhere below on this page). Hopefully, it'll be done soon enough, but for someone to rip it, they'd have to find a ROM of the original version, which is perhaps rarer than the later editions.

Tiny little beef though with the Zelda OoT Soundtrack. Fire Temple, in the background is supposed to be Goron voices, yet all I hear is a bunch of wierd stuff with some voodoo dude coming in every so often. Is that fixable?

That's right, sparse73 is the 3rd Game Save Slot (Banjo playing a Gameboy)...but in regards to one of my earlier posts, it seems the tempo is a bit off on Majora's Mask (might have to do with a PAL/NTSC issue), so why not make a simple box that pops up while playing USFs (like with SPCs, SNESAmp pops up) that allows you to alter the tempo (without risking stability)? I have a tempo-increasing plugin, but it can cause USF tracks to stop playing after a while until Winamp is restarted.
Posted at 3:34 AM UTC on November 6, 2004 by hcs:
Bill means the file called sparse73.ram.miniram.miniusf, not the 73rd track. The only thing I can think of is when Banjo is playing a Gameboy in one of the file select screens.
Posted at 11:52 PM UTC on November 5, 2004 by Vague Rant:
*I meant #73.
Posted at 11:51 PM UTC on November 5, 2004 by Vague Rant:
Are we playing the same track, Bill? I don't think a Game Boy (maybe Advance) could handle this. The #71 I've got's a slow tempo one. I'm bad with instruments, no idea what's playing, but it's got ambient sounds like birds cheeping. To me, it sounds like some kind of menu. I remember the tune, but no idea where it's from.
Posted at 5:56 PM UTC on November 5, 2004 by Bill:
Wow I haven't been here in a while....just came in and saw I needed to upgrade from v0.4. Because, well,.....these things have a tendency to fizzle out and die.
I'm glad it's still kickin' though. awesome, thoroughly awesome. I can't even say how much I appreciate finally having all these n64 tracks.
Seems like you've got most of the games with good music so far. My request is goemon 64. I love that game's music to death. I know there must be others but I just can't think of them off-hand.

sort of unrelated note: anyone know where in banjo-kazooie #73 in the preliminary rip comes from? It sort of sounds like gameboy music....

For all of you who didn't recognize it: You can download many preliminary rips at http://usf.emuhost.net/USF/PRELIMINARY%20RELEASES/
But you listen to them at your own risk! Almost all of them are not timed, tagged and renamed.

Do you also make GSF? Your GSF plug-in crashes my Winamp when it starts. It needs some fixing. However, excellent work on your USFs! Your player for that works great, and the soundtracks themselves are also excellent. Can't wait until Quest 64 is ripped!

As for "Conker's Bad Fur Day": Only the voice samples are stored in MP3 format. But I'm not sure if a rip is possible since Rare used Rad Game Tools for this title.

ARRRGH!!! Damn it!!! I was NOT expecting the text to format itself that way!!! SHIT!!! Oh well man, it's OK. I learn quick. That's all that matters. At least now I know what to expect... Jeez...! It was SUPPOSED to look a lot different, especially the conversation between Beavis and Butthead! Oh well, see ya'!
Posted at 4:40 AM UTC on September 24, 2004 by Srar-Seed Dave:
You guys kick ass! That USF format is pretty damn good! I wish you would make a USF2MIDI program as well. The one thing that needs work still are the timings on some of the songs because they are a little too slow and are not synchronized with the actual N64's speed, along with the volume levels on some of the tracks since they seem too loud or too quiet. You should also add reverb to the SPU so that they sound real. Other than that it kicks ass!!! Maybe you could simply rewrite the SPU to be more "true to the N64" but that's for later. If you made your Configuration dialog just like Neill Corlett's QSF and PSF plugins, this would make things "universal" for everyone who uses the other two plugins, meaning they can easily find stuff. You should also add an option to resample to any rate you wish so people can use 44100Hz if they so feel like it or anything else. I'll send these ideas to their "appropriate source" and see what happens. But yeah, you guys rule!!! I'm not coming down on you by asking for hard things to complete, rather, I'm simply telling you all to keep working and that if you have time, work on these kinds of things. As the old Beavis and Butthead conversation would go: Butthead: "Uhhhhhh... huhuhuhuh..... Uhhhhh.... huhuhuhuh..... Hey Beavis?" Beavis: "W-What is it Butthead? [Raspy Beavis laugh]" Butthead: "Uhhh...huhuhuh... I have thseen the top of the mountain, and believe me... It iths Good! Uhhhh...hmhmhmhm..." Beavis: "COOL BUTTHEAD!!! [Another yet more excited Beavis laugh]" Butthead: I'm gonna thscore!!!" Hehehe... :) :) :D :D I just LOVE doing that! Hehehe... 8) 8) [Starts blushing because he's laughing so goddamn hard] That was fucking cool...!!! OK guys, I'm outta here dudes! Talk to ya later!!! --Dave "The truth is a lie which has yet to be revealed" --Dr. Michael Wolf - Multi Doctorate Government scientist - MJ-12

Hello all! I am in love with this plugin. I love the Ocarina of Time USF collection and really look forward to Majora's Mask! I have two suggestions for this plugin. 1) please impliment a "global Volume" slidebar like what is found in the Highly Experimental winamp plugin. The volume of USF files is not very high so the ability to boost their output would help! 2) changing tracks has, as i'm sure you probably know, a sustantial delay esp. on a machine like mine (800mhz amd athlon based) It also takes quite a bit of CPU compared to PSF. Can this be improved? Overall a great piece of work, please keep it up!

Who is "Gashlin's groupie"? It's weird to be addressed by my last name online...

Please don't bother this guy with OST ripping requests. Just be contented with his releases and thank him for making such a great format!

Hey, great work here! Have you got any plans to rip the F-Zero X soundtrack? That is my all time best N64 music selection and it'd be awesome in usf format! Please do that after the Starfox one, im sure a lot of people will agree it'd be awesome!

Hi man, great Site. I was hopping someone would make this file-format someday. The Golden Eye soundtrack is great. I hope you will rip the Soundtrack from Castlevania 64 someday

AHOY MATEY! Just wanted to point something out: "Note: certain tracks in LOZOOT are pieces of the Hyrule Field song" It's supposed to be like that, so the game doesn't have to load the whole song at once and can easily switch between tracks without it being too noticeable.

Great job, Mr. Gashlin! This is my favourite VGMusic-format and I was waiting for it for quite a long time. Your programming skills and your patience will surely make USF very popular.

I've been keeping a close eye on your USF updates. Seeing the preliminary LOZ: OoT pack makes me optimistic that you'll make this format an equal to the PSF format, considering the amount of effort you're willing to put into the format. Your knowledge has gotten you pretty far, but I think your effort is what's going to make this a great and popular format.

Be sure to keep this a strong project. I'm posotive that in a world wide perspective, this is an important factor in VG Music!

USF made my dreams come true! Thanks a lot for developing it. It does need a lot of sound improvements, because the SM64 set doesn't exactly sound like the real thing, but this is just beta software in development. I hope it'll grow to be a superb system :D

Have you ever thought about writing a tutorial on the N64 that assumes knowledge of R4000 assembly? (I'd do it, except finding info on the N64's workings has eluded me so far. I suppose the next thing for me to do is start disassembling demos.)
Reply 6:00 AM EST on May 12, 2003 by hcs:
Yes, I had considered such a document, but I never got very far with it. If you want I can put the source to some of my demos, including a basic text engine, online. Check out Dextrose's documents section, especially the N64 ToolKit, which includes listings of many important hardware registers. The N64 source section might be helpful as well, most of what I know I learned from the Yoshi crack intro and Heavy 64. I've also got a newer version of LaC's low level doc that you might be interested in. Email me!
