USF player for PSP? by nensondubois at 8:46 PM EDT on September 15, 2008
This is a good idea for those like me who want to listen to USFs on their PSP slim when they're on the go. Can it be done due to extensive usage of CPU?
How so? I realize you've got this seriously weird fear of MP3s, but I can't imagine that the difference between an MP3 and a USF is worth arguing over. If it is, then by all means, write a USF player for the PSP. No one here is going to stop you. In fact, I would expect that you'd receive a lot of support in this effort. Mouser X over and out.
It's just not likely to happen. Project 64, and subsequently 64th Note, are rather Windows-oriented. Josh has made a Unix port, but I'm fairly certain it's still x86 specific. To get it running at all on a PSP would be a few days' work, and to get any decent speed out of it would be a big project. Though there is an N64 emulator for PSP that could potentially be used as a base, USFs unfortunately tend to be ripped in such a way that they don't run in other emulators.
So really, encoding to MP3 or something is your best bet.
Don't get it wrong. It is a good idea. I guarantee that there's tons of people who would *love* to have USFs on their PSP. If I had a PSP, then I'd want to do that. But it is rather difficult to do it. That's the issue more than anything. No one here is saying "Don't do it because it can't be done," or "You'd be wasting your time to do that." It's more that, although it's something people want, it takes a lot of knowledge on how to do it. It's not an easy task. MP3s, at this current time, are far more practical than USFs. Or you could of course use OGG, or even FLAC. If you had the dedication for it, maybe you could port VGMstream (or portions of VGMstream) to the PSP, and even getting ADX or Looping OGG support on the PSP. While not USFs, it does allow for looping the audio data. Once you've got that, it's only a matter of work and effort to find the loop points of the WAVs (from USFs) so that you can convert them to ADX or OGG.
I don't mean to be rude (and hopefully no one else does either) in what I said earlier. But for now, your best option is MP3s (or other similar foramts). If you want to port VGMstream (or portions of it) to the PSP, then please do so! That'd be awesome! Especially Looping OGG support! :D While Looping OGGs certainly aren't as small as USFs, they're better than WAVs and ADXs.
Sorry I can't help any more than that. Mouser X over and out.

Thanks. I should have guessed the obvious method of converting is the only way for now. There is an ADX player for the PSP but it's buggy which supports many other formats as well called Game Music Gear; I posted the link here before.
