in_cube Question by Rew at 7:54 PM EDT on March 17, 2009
Quick question about in_cube:

I'm using the in_cube plugin on Winamp to play some VG music tracks that are in .strm format. The trouble is, I can't edit the names of any of those tracks like I can the rest of the tracks on that game's playlist (those others happen to be in .mini2sf format and can be renamed as easily and conveniently as MP3s).

So how do I change the names of those tracks so they don't look so out of place on my playlist? Thanks!

EDIT:
Note that the music plays just fine (heh, for the most part)--it's only the lack of ability to rename that concerns me.

What we usually do is just rename the files themselves. Streams typically don't have tags, and in_cube doesn't read the tags when they are present.

On a related topic, you really should be using vgmstream instead of in_cube these days. Same issue applies, but vgmstream has a lot of much better support.

Alrighty, I've switched to VGMstream (thanks BTW), and you're right, the same problem persists.

The problem with renaming the file itself is that you can't use colons (:). But because this is a Zelda game I'm doing this with (The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass), I need the colon, but it won't let me put a colon in the filename.

And using "The Legend of Zelda[colon] [Subtitle]" is the way I name *ALL* my Zelda tracks on all my playlists, including SF2 tracks on this same playlist.

Is there no way this can be remedied? Or is there a way to convert .strm files to MP3 or something like that?

(Sorry, I'm really OCD, and this bugs me. =P)

If you use the media library I think you can add that metadata so Winamp displays it, but I don't know how or if that works.
Yes .strm can be converted to MP3. The test.exe program that comes in the archive in a self-contained WAV writer, you can use that to write a WAV and then convert to MP3 through whatever means you choose. Alternatively you can use one of many fine file writer output plugins for Winamp.

When naming these things we usually use a hyphen in place of colons in titles. For what that's worth.

I've seen the test.exe program.

Forgive my noobishness in this area, but how do I use it? (Whenever I open it, it comes up for a moment but instantly disappears again.) And how do I write WAV files on it? Thanks!

It is meant to be run from a command line. If you don't know what that is, I suggest you use a file writer for Winamp. The included Nullsoft Disk Writer output plugin will work.

Central vgmstream *.tag format support please.
There, I requested it again.

...though I do remember dimly there was some fundamental problem with that.

What does the .tag file look like? Give me a spec and I'll throw it in in_vgmstream. I'm getting tired of the whining about this.

I would also appreciate a tagging standard for streams that would be supported by the Winamp vgmstream plugin. I did some searching, and found this lonely thread:
VGM Tagger for mIRC

And here's this thread in case it offers a better solution:
Generic Header Creator

I don't think we want to be modifying files.

GENH solves a different problem.

Next.
