GBS requests (unripped soundtracks, fixes, etc) by bucky at 10:58 PM EDT on May 11, 2010
Anyone checking in here rip GBS files or know if there's a more appropriate place to ask?

It appears that Rodland has yet to be ripped, which would complete Neil Baldwin's soundtracks.

NSYNC - Get to the Show is incomplete with 2-3 missing tracks from the ending "concert" sequence.

And a friend of mine was trying to hunt down a GBS for the pirate game Soul Falchion as well...
:)

Thanks in advance if anyone takes these into consideration!
by bucky at 11:01 PM EDT on May 11, 2010
...and I just realized Rodland was in the Y folder under its Japanese title, my mistake!
by ugetab at 3:44 PM EDT on May 12, 2010
Soul Falchion is done

whoa, a GBC fighter that uses sprites from Last Blade for NGPC? My mind is a little blown. Thanks for the GBS.

ugetab, you continue to save the day! Thanks so much. :)
Credit correction for Soul Falchion by codeman38 at 10:55 PM EDT on May 14, 2010
Linked here by bucky - thanks for the Soul Falchion rip! Yeah, I'm the one who requested it. :)

I don't believe Studio PJ Co. is actually responsible for the music in Soul Falchion. The credits that are in the ROM are leftovers from the Takara fighting game engine that the developers hacked.

I do, however, have a company name for Soul Falchion's developers: a Taiwanese company known as "Vast Fame Co., Ltd." (or in Chinese, 廣譽科技). They're also the company that made the equally good pirate original "Rockman DX3", and seem to really like Mega Man V's sound driver.

Another request, if anyone ever gets to it: "Bob & Bobette", a.k.a. "Suske & Wiske". It's a game based on the Belgian comic book of that title. The music's by Maniacs of Noise; not much more needs to be said in that regard, really. :)

(bump!)

It appears that Gargoyle's Quest is missing the music from the password entry screen.
by Omochao at 4:33 AM EDT on July 14, 2010
Donkey Kong Land 2 is also missing tracks:

by Dais! at 5:23 AM EDT on July 14, 2010
that's curious. I can't seem to find it on the Makaimura box set either, although I'm pretty bad at such a task.

While I mention it, though...

http://www.mediafire.com/?4qunjmmzmjhyojh
(one-click hoster with usual caveats)

http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/9/1/1401201/GargoyleQuest.zip
http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/9/1/1401201//GQIIGBC.zip
(more direct hosting but can run out of bandwidth whenever and will probably be taken down in a few months so sorry future robot people)

there's the Gargoyle's Quest tracks from the sixth disc of the album, encoded at a straight 192kbps (if there's any problems with such, I'm too oblivious to notice). There's also a folder containing the Gargoyle's Quest II GBC tracks from the seventh disc.
by bucky at 9:49 PM EDT on July 19, 2010
Oh, thanks for that link! I'm planning on doing a complete hardware rip of the soundtrack myself, so that helps me out with official track titles.

I'll be ok if a complete .GBS isn't made, since firing up the rom and sampling just the one missing track from 'gameplay' will be easy. Just thought I'd point it out!

The rip doesn't sound bad to me, although I think it may have been sampled from a GBC. I like the sound of the classic DMG-01 Game Boy more, so I'll be sampling from that. And I'll have FLAC / 224k MP3 available, so quality won't be a concern. :)
by Jackalope at 10:15 PM EDT on July 20, 2010
We seem to be missing Chuck Rock, which I heard only has one song, but it's the main theme man

Also, the Hamtaro - Ham-Hams Unite! rip seems to be missing the main theme.
by RukarioGyiyg996 at 9:59 AM EDT on July 22, 2010
There's a GBS of Perfect Dark for the Gameboy Colour already, but it's just 3 music tracks? Why isn't the sound and voice portions ripped?
GBS music by HiFolks at 8:35 PM EDT on July 28, 2010
Sorry to be OT, but has someone a good (or halfbaked, I take everything) description on .gbs [Gameboy Sound] or .mgb [Paragon5 Tracker] or any other sequenced file format from that era?

And of course was there ever a guide to ripping .gbs files (I know they need rearranging and the GB/GBC has no real filesystem...).

And GBS archives:

Don't forget gbs.hcs64.com. That was set up by Knurek, and I'm fairly certain it's more up-to-date than the one on SNESmusic (which, if memory serves me correctly, was also set up by Knurek).

Regarding a GBS spec, I'm sure it's available somewhere more official than the Wayback Machine, but you can find it here nonetheless (with some additional info., such as the creator of the format, and his email address. Though, I have no idea if that email address is still any good). As for ripping GBS files, my recollection is that it's very similar to ripping NSF files (Google search, and some links). Another useful resource is ugetab's site. I know there's a forum for this type of stuff, but I don't know the address for it (I think anewuser does - you can contact him (and many others) through the IRC chatroom). I did find this though, and it undoubtedly has some very useful resources (though, you might have to do some grunt work to find them).

Hopefully these resources prove useful to you. I'm not as familiar with chiptune formats as others are, so hopefully someone else can step in and give you the information/links I missed. Good luck. Mouser X over and out.
by SmartOne at 11:25 PM EDT on July 28, 2010
Learn a bunch of assembly stuff, disassemble the rom, isolate the music code, compile, and you have a rough, ripped chiptune. :D
TechDocs by HiFolks at 5:28 PM EDT on July 29, 2010
@Mouser X: The gbsspec.txt (which I had only the 1.00 Version of) is also the newer 1.02, and the tip that the ripping is similar to NSF files was worth pure gold, I never looked at that ripping guide, thanks.
@SmartOne: You mean the .gbs Winamp plugin effectively is an emulator? xD Well that sounds great. *irony*

Again offtopic: Is there a place for technical documents for all kinds of consoles?
(well except the outdated hitmen site:
LINK )

I thought of putting my collection of technical docs up, so I wondered if there is any archive,I only found fractals of information on many different sites.

This might sound stupid but, if there's Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue, why isn't there a Pocket Monsters Green GBS rip?
by furrybob at 12:59 PM EDT on August 5, 2010
Because the Red and Blue rip is the same as the Green rip
by RukarioGyiyg996 at 7:24 PM EDT on August 5, 2010
Oh I thought there'd be minor version differences.. Nevermind then.

Still would like to see a voice rip of Perfect Dark GBC..
by bucky at 2:48 PM EDT on August 6, 2010
Oh, Dais! Regarding Gargoyle's Quest, I finally sampled it all. Download links for flac/ mp3 are in the video description here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG0udWNgw9U

I noticed that the rip from the Makaimura box set has the music playing slower than it's supposed to? Also, something else that's kind of odd- I think the ROM of Gargoyle's Quest I used (to sample the password music and jingles) has all or most of the music in mono? While the .gbs has some panning. Hmm. :p
by TheUltimateKoopa at 8:01 AM EDT on August 7, 2010
I have noticed something about the Donkey Kong Land 2 rip. It's missing the credits theme. (Character Parade, I think, it's called in DKC2). It's this tune:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5HZfm5z9Fw#t=1m55s
by Omochao at 1:45 AM EDT on August 8, 2010
TheUltimateKoopa, I already mentioned that there were tracks missing.
by TheUltimateKoopa at 5:00 PM EDT on August 10, 2010
Oh yeah.
Another composer ID by codeman38 at 1:12 AM EDT on August 14, 2010
"Kiddinx 4-pack", as ripped by ugetab, is composed by Frédéric Motte, a.k.a. "El Mobo". This is according to the man himself; he lists all 4 games on his web site.

Interesting bit of trivia: one of the tunes in "Benjamin Blümchen" is literally out of the DOS version of "Fury of the Furries", which was also composed by Motte. Caught me off guard when listening to random GBS files.

(And yes, he also did the GB version of "Pac-In-Time", which is essentially a dolled-up installment of "Fury of the Furries".)

R.I.P. ugetab by codeman38 at 12:15 PM EDT on August 21, 2010
According to this thread at GSHI, ugetab has passed away. I was just informed of this via a YouTube comment on my channel.

Rest in peace.
by Mouser X at 1:49 PM EDT on August 21, 2010
Yes, this was mentioned here already in this thread (see the last 2 posts). Thanks for reminding me that life sucks. :( He will most certainly be sorely missed. Mouser X over and out.

by Lunar at 7:07 AM EDT on August 22, 2010
should i even ask what it was?
by Mouser X at 2:37 PM EDT on August 22, 2010
No, you probably shouldn't. The short of it is this - nenson linked a forum that has a member who should be doused in gasoline and lit on fire. Or, better, a slow and painful death while billions laugh at them. It should involve vultures eating his flesh. Seriously, the guy was a jerk, and I didn't even get past the first 5 posts. Mouser X over and out.
by arbingordon at 9:40 PM EDT on August 22, 2010
Rune has always been a stupid fuck, Mouser.
What really put it over the top though, was him complaining that ugetab stole codes from GSC without giving credit, which is ironic considering how GSC is renowned for stealing codes and not crediting the original hackers from kodewerx.
Best troll ever or he needs to get a darwin award asap.
by Lunar at 5:11 AM EDT on August 23, 2010
oh, i saw the link now. i was going to find it abhorrent... but then i saw "age: 16" and was able to safely disregard everything he wrote. looks like he banned someone just for saying something he didn't like as well. haha. internetforumz. let's all post strong words behind our computer screens where there are no real-life consequences.

i lol'd at nenson's "competiting hacking site" idea as well - as if this is serious business and more than a hobby. looks like someone needs to grow up :)
by hcs at 4:26 PM EDT on August 23, 2010
Ok, enough with the hyperbole and mockery, please.

I don't think you have the rip of "Micro Machines 1 & 2: Twin Turbo" ... IIRC it was released in 2000, about the same time as Micro Machines V3 (both for the Game Boy Color).
by Lunar at 12:01 PM EDT on August 26, 2010
i think ugetab was the only active GBS ripper.
by RukarioGyiyg996 at 7:48 PM EDT on August 26, 2010
How the hell was Gameboy Camera ripped if you don't mind me asking?

Is it possible to run the ROM on a emulator? Because I've been wondering that for awhile..
by nensondubois at 10:46 PM EDT on August 26, 2010
KiGB will run it without debugging.
by RukarioGyiyg996 at 6:42 PM EDT on August 27, 2010
Oh, thanks.

Now I can have fun with the error message images!
by darkmech at 12:41 PM EDT on August 28, 2010
does anybody know how to rip gbs files?
