Game Soundtrack Directory project... by Hotcakes at 4:49 AM EDT on July 11, 2010
OK so I have in the past week started up a 'little' project. Basically it involves cataloguing pretty much any game sound track release I can find and putting them all in one easily accessible place. This mostly came about because the fact that the (for example) Kingdom Hearts II streams and psfs are split into separate archives and distribution channels bothers me. :)
http://soundtrack.wikia.com
The last few days I've been combing just a couple of sites so most of the entries so far are pretty bare, but I have done 1500 entries in that time and by the end of the month I expect to have gone through 4 or 5 sites so the listings should be pretty adequate.
Basically at this point I'm gauging interest levels - if anyone thinks this is a worthwhile endeavour I'll keep it up (plus it's wiki based so I'm hoping it won't just be me forever) otherwise I'll write the last week off and go back to MI2SE. :)
http://soundtrack.wikia.com - For those who don't want to copy the link. (come on, it's not hard to add links here... :( )
Are you avoiding emulated audio formats? Most, if not all, of your links lead to MP3/Streamed formats. There's also non-streamed formats such as GBS files, VGMs, SPCs, USFs, PSFs, DSFs, and SSFs, etc. available as well.
You can check vgm.hcs64.com for a whole slew of stuff to grab. There's also SnesMusic.org for SPCs, project2612.org for VGMs, Llin's PSF mirror (not to mention psf.hcs64.com which includes PSFs and the streams) for PSFs (and PSF2, though as far as I know, no such thing (yet) exists on HCS's site), and many many more.
I have no doubt I'm forgetting something (relating to emulated audio formats), but those are the sites I can remember off the top of my head (there's Zophar's Domain, but the sites I listed above are generally updated better/more frequently, and have a more organized set of data). Ah, I was right. There's also Modland (and their FTP site) which hosts an INSANE amount of audio files (including emulated formats, and most likely everything else that's sequenced).
If you're specifically looking for streamed files (and not emulated formats), then the only places I can easily think of are the Gaming Force Forums and Galbadia Hotel (which you've already noticed, of course), and its forums.
While you're idea is a pretty interesting one, it seems to me that, considering the size of streamed files, their location will likely change depending on whether RapidShare or MegaUpload (and others of a similar nature) remove the links or not. For "stable" links, your best bet is the smaller, emulated audio, formats.
Do note, I have nothing against streamed audio (I have hundreds of gigabytes of MP3s, FLACs, OGGs, and whatever weird format the game developers decided to use), but I really like emulated audio. As such, I found it... odd... that no emulated audio links were included.
That's my 2 cents. I've never learned any of that Wiki-edit language stuff, so I'm not terribly helpful in adding links to your listing. If I were to do any work though, most of it would be to redirect people to vgm.hcs64.com and snesmusic.org, and let them search through those sites for the game/music they're looking for (in other words, I wouldn't be creating individual entries for every game - just the consoles, if even that).
Last - DSF and SSF stand for Dreamcast and Saturn, respectively. Just in case you hadn't heard of them before. I know there's DSFs and SSFs available (on vgm.hcs64.com, as well as Modland, and there's a few others), and there's even 1 or 2 players for them (Audio Overload, aoDSF 0.09, aoSSF 1.21, and Neil's Highly Theoretical proof-of-concept plugin). On that note, there's a few emulated audio players available that use the Audio Overload codebase and they can generally be found here.
If you're interested in cataloging all the game music available, and aren't excluding emulated formats, then hopefully the links I've provided are useful. Mouser X over and out.
Are you avoiding emulated audio formats? Most, if not all, of your links lead to MP3/Streamed formats. No not at all, I just haven't gotten around to it yet. Galbadia Hotel has been a bigger undertaking than I thought it would... their listings are so -random- it's hard to sort through them all.
considering the size of streamed files, their location will likely change depending on whether RapidShare or MegaUpload (and others of a similar nature) remove the links or not. Yeh I don't believe I've linked to anything like that and I don't plan to. The wiki would be unmaintainable if it relied on those sorts of links.
I really like emulated audio I love audio from the source... streamed or sequenced. I started with the VGM Tracker because there is a comparatively small collection to log (of alive torrents anyway). I started with GH because I figured it would be nice for laymen who can't be assed with plugins (or use dull music players) to get -something-. Next stop was going to be some mirrors from PSF Central.
