Like you can with SPCs? With SNESAmp, you can set SPCs to play anything up to 192000 Hz. Are you not able to do this with USFs? For example, does Banjo-Kazooie have to be 21998 Hz, or could is it possible to set it to play at maybe 48000 Hz?

Feel free to hack the ROM for different frequency and rip a new USF, though. Just look for the osAiSeqFrequency call (iirc). Not up to giving any more direction than that, though.

Because 48000Hz is better than 21998 Hz? Put it this way, would you rather listen to a tune at 48000 Hz or just under 22000 Hz, or even 16000Hz?

But the music was written with that frequency in mind and most probably won't sound any better if you change the mixing rate.

Look at SPC files for example, they don't sound an iota better when upscaled from 32kHz to 48.

basically, you can't increase sample rate and "create" frequency content that doesn't already exist. if you want to try it yourself, import a 22KHz (or something) audio file into a wave editor and change the sample rate to 44.1KHz. it won't sound any better, and in fact, it may even sound slightly less "bright" as a result.

knurek: interesting point about that actually, a while back i compared the output from snesamp and foo_gep on a song, with the same interpolation settings. they definitely don't sound the same ~ snesamp is still slightly brighter (and nicer for it, if you ask me.) i assume that's down to the differences in sample rate. but i don't think the SNES and N64 are that comparable in how they work under the bonnet.

Listen to Life in the Mines from DKC, in 32000Hz, particularly at the part with the high-pitched pitch-bending notes around the 0:50 mark, and then at the same part in 48000Hz, or if you wish, 192000 Hz.

I guess this is the same thing as with, say, graphics being filtered with hq2x and blargg's NTSC filter. Some people may prefer the first one, but still, no matter how badly the NTSC filtered game looks like, it's still closer to the real deal. :)

right, it's a toss-up between accuracy and "quality." personally i reckon it's better to just give people the option like snesamp does. then everyone's happy.

anyway, i just don't think the same can be done for N64. "that isn't how it works", etc.
