This thread is made to find out what instruments are used in some familiar VGM.
For example, if you have a sound pack from a certain author and managed to found an instrument that is used in a video game, details about what the name of the album is and other info will be listed here.
If you know of any familiar instruments in a common sound collection used in any VGM and would like to contribute, please feel free to post a comment about your findings!
NOTE: Some names will not be correctly tagged... so instead, it will use the file name of the preferred rip content.
I noticed that almost every sample that was used in the Sonic CD EU soundtrack came from the Zero-G Datafile series. There are a ton of samples featured on these sample cds.
I've been investigating the source for the instruments from Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. I believe I found a few.
Prosonus Orchestral Strings (Roland S770) STR_.Sec f 1aM (two samples are used from this preset)
Spectrasonic Distorted Reality (mostly used in Majora's Mask)
Elves - Stone Tower Temple - Illusion Ethereal (I think this is used somewhere) Iceland 1 - Final Hours Pit Hit (one of these) - Snowhead Temple Danger (maybe) - Cave
Some of the atmospheric pads used in the temples for both OoT/MM might come from this CD.
For Banjo Kazooie/Tooie, Grant used a Roland JV 1080 and an Emu Proteus FX for the sounds. Not sure what specific samples though.
Just two more, probably should've just edited my post but whatever:
Super Mario 64 takes a sample from the Sonic Images sample cd. I came across this by accident and I'm very very sure it's the same exact sample. That weird windy like sample you hear at the very begining of the song used in Big Boo's Haunt is the FX_TibetnMon SI sample.
This next sample might be a bit more common in other libraries, but I found the same sample for sure in one CD I have. The Nylon Guitar instrument you hear in OoT/MM uses two samples from Wall of Sounds Volume 8 - 6WAVE30 NYLG and 2WAVE70 NYLG.
The cool thing about finding these samples, especially for the N64 games, is that the quality's a lot better. Hopefully I can find more in the future.
Some more sources for samples from Ocarina of Time.
These come from Best Service's Gigapack sample CD.
CD1:
CH_GRG 7 (Greg Mmh Uni) - Gregorian male choir sample that was used for Temple of Time, and a lot of others songs that feature a male choir.
CH_CLAS1/CH_CLAS2 (Nuns Aahh) - Female church choir, used wherever a female choir was used (like the "Legend of Hyrule" track).
SYN DIG2 (SYN:Fantasia3-L sample) - typical Fantasia sample commonly found, but since this was part of the same sample set as a lot of these other samples this might be the one used in the game.
STRING 3 (STR:Harp preset) - Harp used wherever it was featured
PAD 5 (PAD:Bass Pad) - Okay, not a OoT sample - but a MM one! Used in Great Bay Temple around 1:14.
BR TRUM1 - (BRA:TRUMPET) - Trumpet, used a lot in OoT/MM.
PAD 3 (PAD: 36 C4) - Pad, used in Zora's Domain, Water Temple, and I believe even the Forest Temple.
PAD 3 (PAD: 19.1) - Pad, not sure if this is the same exact one, but maybe. This is the synth string that you can hear in the Spirit Temple and the Final Hours in MM. But I don't think this is the same sample. I found a sample that's actually just like it a while back, but it was oddly featured on a E-MU 2 sample cd...
CD2 has some guitar samples and a lot of drum samples. They could be used as well.
Note though, the game only uses some of the samples that are used in the actual preset and some may have been modified so that the sample is shorter.
the fantasia used in the zelda games is from the Roland D50. it appears in lots of games (and pop songs, etc.)
any idea where the "wooo" pad from Super Mario 64 is from? the one in Shifting Sand Land, Hazy Maze Cave and Koopa Road. i use it quite often but I'd love to know its origin.
by nothingtosay at 2:21 PM EST on December 2, 2012
I want the synth pad from "Inside the Deku Tree" from Ocarina of Time. I have loved that sound for forever. It's not on the Gigapack CD is it?
It could probably be ripped with SRip or the other N64 sound tools. Actually I think someone made a soundfont for the zelda games, might be worth tracking that down.
by nothingtosay at 10:14 PM EST on December 4, 2012
I think I used to have that soundfont but that hard drive died. I've tried to find it again but I could only get the one labeled as Ocarina of Time at zophar that turned out to be mostly A Link to the Past samples and a Mario Paint version that only has a small selection of sounds.
I was looking for that sample too but I couldn't find it. I'm wondering if maybe Koji Kondo took the sample from another preset and modified it somehow. He definitely would've had to have edited the samples to change the audio rate and modify the loop points. I'll keep looking.
In the mean time, here are some more Zelda samples. This time from Rarefaction's A Poke in the Ear sample cd. I don't know if he used the same CD though:
Crunch Roar - Used in Jabu Jabu's Belly as the stomach movement sound effect. Gross.
Awkbird 1 Awkbird 2 - Used for Woodfall temple in Majora's Mask. I can't find that weird war cry sample that you hear everywhere on this cd though.
RizeKrash - Used in Twilight Princess. I can't remember exactly, but it was used when you were in the Twilight Realm. I think when you died and reappeared this is what plays.
Weird Ambien - Not sure if this is the same sample, but something like this sample is used in Death Mountain/Dodongo's Cavern. It's kinda subtle, but it's a mechanical sounding sample that plays (it's not that loud screech that often plays in the song).
The re spawn sound you were talking about I'm almost sure that its SYN_115x in Best Service Gigapack. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hLJIOOQELg&t=7m56s
The pitch bend is created by the sequence.
Sorry for double post. The edit button disappeared.
Haha, I love that sound in that theme! So random. It's also mixed in such a way that when I first noticed it I wondered if I was really hearing it at all or if my ears were kind of playing tricks on me.
Found some more Zelda samples. There's some Mario 64 too. A lot of these samples take very little memory to use and sound familiar to a few SNES games. Also many of the samples have a 22050 Hz rate, which is a common sample rate in Zelda/Mario 64.
Akai Sound Library Vol.01.XL
Seq-Bleap 03 (Preset) - This sample is used in Majora's Mask when the invaders come to the ranch. There's a slight difference though, the sample from the game has loop points to repeat over and over while the one on the CD plays once.
ST-PIANO G4 (Sample) - Used in Animal Crossing/Forest in the Rainy Day song. This sample has an added reverb effect applied to it. I think it's the same one.
MARIMBA/VIBRA/XYLPHONE (Sample) - I think these were used in many games developed by first party. I know Zelda used the Marimba a lot, but I've heard the Vibra/Xylphone samples in a few other games too - like Yoshi's Story.
ANALOG STR Q - Here's the synth string from Zelda. You can hear it in the Spirit Temple from OoT and Final Hours from Majora's Mask.
STRING CT B1 -> B3 - A little confusing, but here are some orchestra string samples from Zelda and Mario 64. String CT B1 is used in Ocarina of Time (it's the same sample used in Prosonus Orchestral Strings (Roland S770) but shortened) but it's not used in Mario 64. But String CT B3 is used in Mario 64 but not in OoT.
There are a ton more samples on the CD but I don't have time to list them all. I recognized the Nylon Guitar sample from Zelda/Yoshi, the music box like samples from Animal Crossing (when you save your game and retire) and even Yoshi's Island I think. The CD has a ton so it's definitely worth checking out if you can find it.
I'm starting to notice a lot of samples that I identified earlier are appearing in other sample CDs, so I'm guessing a lot of them are more common than I thought. I still can't find a lot of the ones I want though. :\

You buy them off the web or from a catalog. That library was around $20. You can also get them for free off of some sites. Though you need to buy them if you want to professionally use them.
quote koolaid: "SYN DIG2 (SYN:Fantasia3-L sample) - typical Fantasia sample commonly found, but since this was part of the same sample set as a lot of these other samples this might be the one used in the game"
Though it is common but it was found a long with other samples in the same library so its most likely what he used. Roland D50
And just because I love those chanting from OoT, I uploaded both OoT and the ones from Cruis'n World (contains longer versions). Yes I really like them.
Also That's what I was wondering. I never converted it. That just how the guy who made it recorded it. Its on his side. You cant get rid of it unfortunately. Unless there are other versions like KONTAKT or AKIA that could not have it but I doubt it. That is the CDDA version. Don't forget its an old sample cd. Sometime before 1997.
I should also say that after the arabic prayer track the yodels from what lunar posted are there. all of them. lol. I cant stop laughing. Even the end vocals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghmvum0E66k
Great work! I found out about this thread shortly after I created one over at VGMdb. There's a bunch of stuff I found, which hasn't been mentioned here. Please, do check it out! I took some sources from the first post (credited you of course), I hope you don't mind.
http://vgmdb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=11231 I try to keep it as organized as possible, but if you have any suggestion on how I might improve the thread, please let me know.
EDIT: Also, can I ask you where you hear these samples, AceK?:
(Devil May Cry) BREATHLESS (from Distorted Reality II) - in "Living Cave" JETTY (from Distorted Reality II) - in "Karnival"
While listening through the tracks I really couldn't find anything that sounded like the samples..
Nisto: You might have to adjust the pitch, I think those are the samples used in DMC. I'll double check...
For BREATHLESS: I'm sure it uses this, but I think it mixed another instrument along with this. C5 G5 (and maybe A#4) keys being pressed makes the whistling ambient noise. In other words, this mixed with another sample makes that noise.
For JETTY: It's there definitely. It's an ambient noise that plays in the background in the beginning, around 14 second mark, etc.
Also...
(set) Distorted Reality II (sample) BLASTCAPS 73
...is used on an anime song FLOW - WORD OF THE VOICE. Found it from Persona Trinity Soul.
Some more samples from that Akai Sound Library Vol 01 sample cd:
Final Fantasy VI:
CH VO W0# and CH VOM 0# - Not sure on this but they sound like those vocal samples that are used for the "Mario and Draco" opera stuff. But it's hard for me to know for sure because I don't know how to get the stand alone sample from the game to compare. But you can hear them here. http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?assf3sbmqqvk54u
Sonic Adventure:
REWIND 3 -R - I think this was used for At Dawn just when the song begins to loop again.
These samples come from Voice Spectral 1:
Jet Set Radio: Track 4 - Used in "I Love Love You", voice says "Do you love me too?" I think the "too" part is cut off in the song though. The last sample of the track is the very first vocal sample you hear in "Grace and Glory". In fact this whole track was probably used in Jet Set Radio somehow.
Track 11 - Used in "Rock it On", not sure what it says though ("Viva, viva, la revolucion", I think).
Track 93 - Used in a lot of songs, "Hey".
Sonic Adventure: Track 24 - "Letz Get This Party Started" - Robot voice that plays left channel at around 0:50.
Earthworm Jim 2: Track 56/57 - Title screen, some of the female Doo wee bob samples
Sonic Adventure 2: Track 77 - Chao Racing Extended Mix (at 0:26), the Goofy yell.
Track 87 - Meteor Herd (at 1:03), "Oh yeah!"
Samba de Amigo:
Track 92 - Vamos a Carnaval, beginning of the song "Uno, Dos, Tres, Quatro", and that "Woahhhh" part in the beginning too.
What's the name of that instrument used in Ocarina of Time that plays in many tunes, for example, it plays in the 'second half' of Kaepora Gaebora (the major key part), as well as Kakariko Village (I think), the last half of Lost Woods.
It sounds like some kind of mixture of an oboe, violin, harmonica or something, but at the same time, nothing like either of them.
Well I think it's a string instrument. Most likely a single violin. There's just no articulation because... well it's a digital sound as we all know. So I'm pretty sure its a violin or a type of string instrument.
I absolutely love the concept of this thread! Sure fan-made .sf2's can fit the bill, but if you can get the master copy of the sounds, then you're as set as can be!
This may be a tall order, but does anyone know where GameFreak got the Pokémon Generation III instruments from? I love all of them and would love to hear them without the GBA's compression! Thanks!
@Master E Beats me. I haven't ran into any library's that had those kind of sounding horns or strings. It's kinda rare to run into GBA samples. I got lucky that I found one from MegaMan Zero 2. A guitar sample.
Hmm... I know that Mother 3 used many of the same instruments as Gen III due to it being co-developed by GameFreak... I wonder if the guys at starmen or fobby have what I'm looking for?
HEY! Has anyone run into anymore?! I have found a few menu SFX from Sonic Generations in PSY-FX.
Also The world ends with you. Its from a VST program called FM8 by Native Instruments http://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/synths-samplers/fm8/
The CD Voice of Istanbul has pretty much every ethnic sample from it. It has the drum beat, string ensemble part and vocals from Ook battle theme. Also some flute instruments from Voice of Native America
BTW, if the Islamic chant sample's first release was on that CD, then it has to predate 1994 because I know a song that used it then as well. (not sure if you know this)
^ i have no clue for that. I cant even listen to the second link.
Also I noticed yoko shimomura from Kingdom hearts has a lot of drum loops but im not sure if she makes them or not. There is one particular loop that i REALLY REALLY want to find but im not sure what it would be in.
He is the samples. It's from the track "the 13th reflection"
The mp2 plays fine for me, are you sure you're not trying to play it as a video stream? Because the mp2 audio layer is royalty free which is why TopWare used it so to avoid licensing the layer 3 codec.
There are too many library's to search. One think that could help is find the release dates of the game then go through and find the library's at that date and below. You better hope it's an early 2000 or lower because a lot came out after that period
Anybody know what hardware/software Taro Bando used in F-Zero X?
FIND THIS! by peronmls at 8:31 PM EST on December 25, 2013
Okay, I'm hearing this sample everywhere and I need to know where it comes from. It must be a popular CD. It's the tribal drum beat. It must came out 2004 or earlier since KHII was 2005.
Kingdom Hearts II (Sacred Moon) 0:14 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4eN6y6_bTg
Siren: New Translation aka Blood Curse (Infiltration) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQD-LICqv8I
I found an interesting one.. but it's pretty much impossible to hear without speeding up the track. Once you've done that, filter out the highs to hear it more clearly.
"SEWER CATS-B2" from "Zero-G: Cuckooland 'ghost in the machine'" was used in 1.18 "EYE OF THE WIND (Uppertown)" (2:21)
In this folder, Hal_Gosp comes from Winback and the other from Donkey Kong Country 3. This comes from OoT. It's one of the river sound SFX. And This also comes from OoT. I think its used in the Shadow Temple. These come from Goldeye and Perfect dark. All of these samples come from Zero G's Ambient 2. For more Zelda 64 samples, you can search around in here. I forget exactly where all those samples came from but I've had em laying around for awhile. For more updates and such you can keep an eye on this thread. Oh also a pretty cool thing I found out. If anyone is watching the anime, Akame ga Kill! I've found a few samples that Taku Iwasaki uses for that soundtrack. In this folder, ETHNSHOUT1.wav and ETHNSHOUT2.wav are being used in his songs. I've heard them a few times so far.
^ I was thinking only yesterday how creepy that PD sample sounds in Deep Sea.
To add to the things in the Zelda 64 folder: 'African 13 111-A' is used in PSO EpI&II Growl, from the digital haze. 'PAD_01 String' is probably the string voice used in Pelagic II on Perfect Dark.
punk7890-2: Nice. I found and documented that Deep Sea sample not too long ago over at VGMdb by the way: http://vgmdb.net/forums/showthread.php?p=53555
Check it out. If you found something I we didn't maybe you can post it there.
A few other quick ones to note these come from Twilight Princess. They are from Best Service's Giga Pack. And this comes from Super Mario 64. I forgot where it comes from.
Hmm, I have the SM64 sample documented as being track 46 (sample 5) from Datafile 2.. TIB.MONKS could be from "Sonic Images 1 Musical FX, Drums, Percussion". Do you have this library? Well, either way I'm sure it's sampled from hardware (M1 maybe?)
See this post for a list of gear he has by the way.
Yeah I have that library. That's the library. I just had to look at it myself. I don't think its from a M1 as I have it and never came across it. There's also another TIB MONK on that CD. I uploaded it here.
I'm rather late and it may be obvious but I'm pretty sure that ETHNSHOUT1 sample was used by Hitoshi Sakimoto in Shippu Mahou Daisakusen/Kingdom Grandprix in the track "Novice Reining" and is probably the sound used many times in the Vagrant Story soundtrack as well. It's also in the Secret of Mana track "The Oracle". Unless somebody else made a sample that's almost identical.
Pokemon by KeiTaRo at 12:37 AM EDT on September 1, 2014
Master E, over a year ago, asked about the samples from the Generation 3 Pokemon titles. I can tell you, -almost- every single instrument there came from the Roland Sound Canvas 88 pro (SC-88p). That super iconic guitar was sampled from a very small register of the Nylon guitar patch and was also used heavily in the Golden Sun series. The drums are almost 100% Sound Canvas (mainly Orchestra and Standard 2 kits iirc for Ruby and Sapphire) though several iconic additions in FireRed/LeafGreen such as the overly compressed snare...thing, the kick drum and the toms, do not appear to be from this synth. Hell, even a few of the SFX (bubble comes to mind) are from here.
FWIW, the SC-88 and all of its variations was insanely popular among Japanese developers and still is. Off the top of my head, Harvest Moon: Wonderful Life, a huge chunk of the Fire Emblem series, Advance Wars 1 + 2, and Hercules no Eikou IV for the SNES all rely heavily on samples from this. Octomania for the Wii also.....poorly
The earlier model, SC-55 (the light version of which is commonly known as the default MIDI sound for Windows machines) is actually integrated in to the Pro version of the synth, meaning a lot of these samples tend to pop up as well (hell, Magical Drop on the SNES was entirely SC-55 samples, and Mario vs Donkey Kong hilariously ripped the Windows version using Modplug Tracker of all things)
Hey guys, fantastic topic. One thing I noticed is that many, MANY SNES samples are common across a lot of games. a large portion of these are seemingly Nintendo-exclusive and I've narrowed down the responsibility of their existence down to the guys from the old RND2 (specifically Akito Nakatsuka and Yuichi Ozaki, though I'm sure Kondo had a hand at some point)...I'll compile a set to share later. In addition to the sounds common to many Nintendo-developed titles, there are a few samples that seem to be universal across a LOT of titles, regardless of developer. a specific trumpet (Sim City, Donkey Kong Country), sawtooth (Spanky's Quest, Super Tennis), snare drum (Marvelous, Wario's Woods, every single BSX title) and organ (Mario Kart, Kouryuu no Mimi, Earthbound) come to mind.
My guess is that Nintendo had a basic sample pack they gave out to developers at the time. Now, if we can narrow down the source of these, it's possible we can find many other Nintendo game samples from that time period as well. Again, I will take the liberty of compiling my findings and post them here for people to take a stab at.
I've always been fond of a particular guitar sample used in at least Super Tetris 3 (Sparkliss) and Ruin Arm (Battle with Emperor), probably others. Gonna assume it's a TOSE thing.
by MetalKnick at 12:11 AM EST on November 10, 2014
The Roland SC-88 also has most of the instruments used in Golden Sun and its sequel. It's just small registers.
I'm so happy I got the SC-88 though. I'm having so much fun with it. So far here's a list of games that I've discovered use samples from this canvas.
All GBA GameFreak games All GBA Camelot games Summonknight 1 and 2 Mother 3 Kirby Air Ride Smash Melee (Shogo Sakai loves this Sound Canvas) Wind Waker
