VGMStream Incorrectly sees 4-channel XVAG as 2-channel by AchillesPDX at 8:37 PM EDT on March 13, 2012
Hi there. I'm trying to do my first game rip using VGMStream and either the test.exe file or the Winamp plugin and I'm running into an issue.

I'm trying to rip the music out of the new PSN game Journey (because it's goddamn amazing) and it works fine for the 2-channel XVAG music files but gets totally screwed up on what must be 4-channel files (as they're named that way).

Any help would be appreciated and I can upload a smaller test file somewhere if that would help fix the issue.

Thanks in advance guys!

OK, here's a 3MB sample file that gets totally borked when listening to or converting with VGMStream:

Thanks, I've heard about these but not had the chance to work on them (been more or less out of it for a few weeks). Journey may be enough to get me interested, I saw a presentation on it at the Experimental Gameplay Workshop last week.

If you haven't played Journey, you owe it to yourself to do so. It's one of the most amazing experiences I've had playing a game and the music played a huge part in that.

So I hear, but I don't have a PS3. And despite a whole lot of interesting games there (and on XBLA, for that matter, or iOS), I don't currently plan to get one. It's a little one-man boycott that is unfortunately also robbing me of a lot of awesome games. We'll see how long I stick to it.

Totally understandable - Sony has certainly wronged a lot of people over the years. Hopefully you're at least able to fix this VGMStream bug so you can enjoy all it's sweet, sweet orchestrated tunes. I look forward to any progress you're able to make.

Is there any way to be notified when a reply is made to this thread? I'd hate to forget to check in...

Not really, there's an RSS feed for the whole forum but I doubt it'll be too useful for you. You can probably subscribe to svn updates on sourceforge somehow.

Here's another random question for you... When I play the 2-channel XVAG files or convert them to WAV using the test.exe file it reports them as being MPEG-1 Layer III Audio (MP3).

Is there a way to extract this raw MP3 data without writing it out as a WAV file so that I'm not compressing it all over again when I convert the WAVs to MP3s anyway?

Thanks again!

Hi HCS, have you had a chance to look into this?

Thanks!

I did struggle with it for a while but I didn't figure it out.

Hm, that's interesting to know, I didn't think they were just dumbly interleaved like that. There's got to be a specification of the layout in the header, I'll take a look.

I share AchillesPDX's quest-
I too am trying to decode Journey's '.xvag' audio files.

I don't have very much experience in this area, but I have tried VGMstream (latest version as of 11:32-2013/03/28), and ran into what I think is the same issue as AchillesPDX.

I also tried MFAudio with no luck. (on a whim)

I don't wish to bother you all, but if any progress has been made that would make this endeavor achievable, I'd love to know.

Thank you,
Facies Secunda

Most of the files in NPUA70218\USRDIR\Data\Sounds\Streams\mus seemed to play for me, but some were still quad channel. Most importantly, the final level is flawless, and that's my favorite one :)

It might be impossible at the moment since our decoder for mpeg is coded to work on mono or stereo streams only.
