Winamp VGMStream Crash by Elven Spellmaker at 5:59 PM EST on February 10, 2013
I seem to be getting crashes with VGMStream when trying to play multi-channel audio files like the ones in Mario Kart Wii.

I can play other, non-multichannel files and it never used to crash before.

I have just replaced VGMStream with the latest version and replaced the support files too, but still can't get them to play.

Anyone had a similar experience?

OK so my original question is bollocks it seems.

VGMStream isn't causing the crashes, it's some DSP plug-in which can play the normal versions but not the multi-channel ones. VGMStream isn't appearing in my plug-ins.

I wonder why...

are you getting something like this?

by Elven Spellmaker at 6:28 AM EST on February 11, 2013
The crash brought up the "Winamp is not responding" dialogue, but this isn't caused by VGMStream.

VGMStream just isn't appearing in my loaded plug-ins despite me having the required external files.

Did you recently update Winamp/install Winamp over an older version that had VGMstream already installed? I don't know if it was ever fixed, but Winamp's installer corrupts VGMstream's DLL files. Perhaps that's what happened? The other option (I've done this numerous times to figure out what's causing the problems I've had) is to remove all your plugins (put them in a different folder or something) and put them back in bit by bit until you find the one that's causing problems. Keep in mind that some plugins require multiple DLL files for them to work, or else they'll crashes as well. I usually do this in groups of plugins, since I have so many.

Hopefully that helps. I'm running out of time, otherwise I'd try to come up with others ideas. Mouser X over and out.

I tried it once, and then replaced all the DLLs and the plug-in with the latest but it won't show up at all.

did you install the "C++ Redistributables"?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but could you provide the links to the 'latest' (dlls and plugin) that you are using? Something may have gone awry with a particular build.

I put both the plug-in and the files into Winamp\ and Winamp\Plugins\. It usually works but not this time.

@manako:Which C++ Redist is this? The readme doesn't mention it needing one, and surely I would have it if my previous version worked? (Unless this is a new requirement)

I might just have to remove them and try again.

Oddly enough, I started to play Mario Kart Wii files and VGMStream was working!

So this problem is a weird one which has gone away, thankfully.

I've periodically had Winamp refuse to load several 3rd party plugins AND generate a UAC prompt for no reason. Rebooting is the only way to fix it as I have absolutely no clue what causes it. It's just really freakin' strange when it happens.

I've had it some times where it prompts for UAC every boot up until I reinstall it. Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason behind it, but deleting/renaming elevator.exe and elevatorps.dll stops it from doing whatever it is trying to do. Then it only pops up UAC prompts when you go into specific options menus.

I use Wumpus OpenAL v1.0.0 (which I think is the latest) as my output and I often get that it can't open the output channel.

This is lessened slightly by having Winamp in a directory other than Program Files (x86)/Program Files.

All I have to do is to open another Winamp by using middle click on the Winamp pinned icon (which ALWAYS works) and then I close the one that complained about the error.
