tutorial on how to rip music by hacking by admiralpete at 8:02 PM EST on December 10, 2013
I was just wondering if there was a decent tutorial on how to rip music from games by hacking. Basically what I'm trying to accomplish is to rip new VGMs of Mega Man for Game Gear (I know the game sounds awful, but I'm a sucker for all things MM), and rip a VGM file of the one track in Mega Man: The Wily Wars that's not in the sound test (the song is the jingle that plays in MM3 after Wily is defeated). Any help would be appreciated. Also, as a side note, I'm getting close to having a complete and tagged PSF set of Mega Man Legends, ripped by VGMToolBox. I'll post those as soon as they're done.
This is a good general tutorial for such hacking - it doesn't apply to all systems, obviously, and may be a little outdated, but it's very useful as an introductory guide to the concept. I'm not that great at this stuff myself, but if you still have any questions, I'll see if I can track down answers.
Incidentally, on your Legends PSF set, you're accounting for the regional differences, right? There are only a couple, and you probably already know about them, but I just want to double-check.

Thanks for the info on the guide, I am definitely going to give the hacking a try. And I didn't realize the Legends music had many regional differences because I never played through the Japanese version. I will however, look into it and make sure everything that can be ripped via PSF is in my set. I don't plan on uploading any of the XA audio from either region because of the fact that there's voice acting on the XA on the NA version. If there's no voice acting on the JAP version, I will include it, but looking at the NA, I doubt that any of the tracks are preserved without voiceovers.
