The Video Game Sound Source Thread by Benjamin at 6:02 AM EDT on June 29, 2015
It's like The VGM/Others Instrument Source Thread, only here we're looking for sound effects.
Here's some I found:
Yoshi's Island -Rarefiction's A Poke in the Ear With a Sharp Stick (2_P-SHCLACK, 12_WWWISHAU)
Luigi's Mansion -Best Service Gigapack (Probably a few sounds in there, they do use a few sounds for the soundtrack such as JX P Sound3) -Spectrasonics Distorted Reality (MENTAL) -Big Fish Prosonus ProFX (I know they used DRIP SINGLE)
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door -Northstar Hollywood Edge Vol.1 (Hammer sounds, birds chirping sound, some others) -E-MU Emulator II (Fuzzy bounce sound, some cartoony SFX) -Zero-G Ambient (Uses MONOLITH for some Shadow Queen-related sounds, and the pre-Final Battle ambience is part of COSMIC#1)
New Super Mario Bros. DS -Big Fish Prosonus ProFX (Blockhopper-related sounds)
Super Paper Mario -E-MU Emulator II (Fuzzy sounds, some shakuhachi sound I found that I don't know where it's used)
Super Mario Galaxy -Best Service Gigapack (SYN:4rtt, SYN:Cpd2tt, SYN:Fantasia3, and probably a few others) -Spectrasonics Distorted Reality (ARCTICWIND, BRIMSTONE, THRUSTERS, INCOMING) -Big Fish Prosonus ProFX (DRIP SINGLE, BOING MED CR, BOING PLUCK, BOING SHOR.1)
Super Mario 3D World -Big Fish Prosonus ProFX (Sounds reused from Galaxy, ZIP PWANNG C) -Roland Fantom (either X or G, IDK, they use AirPluck for some sounds)
Is that sound ripped from a game? I definitely heard a more "dry" version of that scream somewhere. Sounds very familiar. The WAV you provided is a mix of at least two different sounds. I may be wrong but that female scream COULD come from the same sample collection that contains other, well known and overused female screams but I'm unable to find it atm. From the top of my head, one of them is used in HL2 as ambient sound (Ravenholm) played at half speed.
Yes, the sample is ripped from Silent Hill (PS1). This is the closest I've been to any research into it whatsoever (your mention of a "dry" version that is). I've looked through countless libraries, but nothing even remotely close to that sound.. Let me know if you find out more!
Wow, thanks for creating this thread! Here's a sound effect I've been looking for. It's an dark stab like effect I have heard at least 5 times in video games, but I can only cite two instances: the most recent one is Pokemon XY, where it was used in Team Flare's themes:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=NE4nrBRGHCA it starts at the beginning and fades away.
and also in Yu-Gi-Oh tag force years ago:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvrviVQzcP0 it starts around 0:10.
Speaking of wind waker does anyone here happen to know where the sound effect that plays when you hit an enemy comes from? It's just this one for now as I'm dying to know, desperately need it. Thanks.
Just had to check out Sound Effects Series 4000 since it was on WDLmaster's page. Ended up finding this:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters - Track 01 (sample 3, very first part) from Sound Ideas: Sound Series 4000 (Clone Ray laugh FX - I'm pretty sure this is used elsewhere too though, maybe one of Sisyphus' effects)
Well, The General series 6000, which is even bigger, contains basically EVERY sound you'll ever hear in any game. I cannot even start a list because every other sound is used somewhere. It contains TONS and TONS of sounds used in games, especially from the 90's. Almost all Starcraft Terran sounds are in there, some Zerg sounds, Super Mario 64 sounds, OOT sounds, tons of Thief 1 & 2 sounds, basically every weapon and explosion you ever heard in a game is in there. C&C Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert basically use that library only. I does not matter which sound you chose from that library – you heard it at least once in the last 25 years…
You mean a list of the actual people who recorded the sounds? I'm not sure if such a list exists. We can't even be sure if the aforementioned sample CDs are really the original "first hand" source of all the sounds or if they are just licensed from yet another company or maybe even MANY other companies that did the actual recordings. It's like the voice actors who have to dub entire movies & stuff (German in my case) which are never mentioned anywhere. Most people don’t even know the name of the (German) voice of a certain actor they know for 30 years... but I digress...
You certainly make a point. And with a pack that large, I'm almost positive there's borrowed sounds.
Well, maybe one of these days this thread will dig up all the original studios. Then maybe we can find out who actually recorded and mastered such prolific sounds!
Does anybody have a full rip of the Wario World sound effects? And do a number of them go unused?
Because while poking around in the game's files, I extracted wario_gc.samp and plopped it into GoldWave just to see what would happen, and surprisingly I got something resembling a signal. And through the static I heard sounds that I have never heard in the game before.
Including, but not limited to:
A classic burp sound effect Someone cackling A stereotypical "tada!" fanfare And lines I'm not sure Wario's ever said before
If you want to see what I mean, drag & drop the file into GoldWave and decompress it under
File Type: Raw (snd, raw) Attributes: PCM signed 16 bit, little endian, mono Rate (Hz): 16000
And turn down your volume. I wasn't kidding when I said there was static. Probably because it's in ADPCM or something like that and doesn't come through cleanly in just PCM.
Master E, Nisto helped me out with that a while back with his MusyX Tool because I wanted the sounds as well...game doesn't use instrument samples like Super Mario Sunshine does so yeah.

Does anyone know where the ReDead scream used in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time comes from?

Thanks for reviving this old thread!!! I've recently been working on getting a collection of many sound effects like this from many different sources such as MP3 versions of a few of the albums, and I don't know and don't have any sort of Big Fish Audio or anything obscure like that, but I DO have a lot of Sound Ideas sounds (6000, 4000), as well as classic sound effects (WB, HB), and many of the Hollywood edge sounds. I was considering I'd make a list of sounds I've heard in many classic games, and I have found a LOT from those four artists. So far, I have found many, many things.
I know this has been a year, but Master_E, could you send me a WAV version of that burp sound effect? Because I might be able to find it.

the redead scream appears to be a composite of a scream and another sound effect. I'm not sure if it was done by nintendo or on the cd like that.
