YouTube Lossless by Mygoshi at 2:40 PM EST on January 13, 2017
I'm wondering how to upload lossless audio to youtube. In 2014/2015, HQ music that I was uploading to youtube didn't have a very "degraded quality", but since July 2016, HQ music seems to be 128 kbps but I upload the videos at 720p. How to keep high quality? (like in ffmpeg or other things)

because I don't know how SilvaGunner keep such high quality : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Y_D6koUbWI

"HQ" will be either 128kbps AAC or Opus, regardless of what you upload.

The "High Quality" version you linked to is Opus 128kbps, which in itself is a very high quality rip, since Opus is pretty good even at 96kbps, while at 128kbps, it should be pretty much transparent to most people.

E: Incidentally, this is the spoof channel, "SiIvaGunner". The original SilvaGunner was copyright banned a long time ago. SiIvaGunner, that is, with a capital i instead of a lower case L, has been uploading fakeout and original music mixes for comedic value for years now, and not getting banned because they don't violate the actual copyrights they claim to with their song titles.

Nice Hotline Bling remix of the shop channel, by the way. Especially that it gets finished with The Flintstones theme.

I know that audio quality depend on video quality on youtube, but when you say it's Opus 128kbps, how do you know? And how to upload Opus to youtube? With video codec that supports opus? I'm using MP3 384 Stereo (no joint stereo), 48kHz since a lot of time now, and I don't know why, but a day I noticed that youtube degraded a lot more the quality

For example I used exact settings for this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0WSReU0tUg
and the quality is pretty the same as my files.
(it is originally XMA 48kHz)

And look at this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiou6g9M9NU

I used the exact settings and the quality is bad compared to the previous video, and the image looks a little big different. Don't know what's happening.
by kode54 at 3:58 PM EST on January 13, 2017
And why aren't you uploading the original XMA files for the JoshW.info archive? That's another option.

If anything, upload the XMA of that track so I can check it, please.

The encoding pipeline that content goes through on YouTube is based on the video height. There are effectively three pipelines: height under 720px (SD), height between 720px and 1079px (classic HD), and 1080px+ (modern HD).
by kode54 at 9:28 PM EST on January 13, 2017
And the clip he posted above already hit the maximum audio quality pipeline for YouTube. I'm waiting for the original audio clip for comparison. In its original format, so I may also check the bitrate/quality of the original.
by Kurausukun at 10:43 PM EST on January 13, 2017
This is only tangentially related, but since we're talking about different audio codecs at certain bitrates: how good would you say a ~100kbps Ogg Vorbis file is in comparison to an AAC/Opus/MP3 of the same bitrate? Is there a good way of knowing this without listening (I don't have the best headphones, so after a certain point I can't really hear minute imperfections).
by kode54 at 1:01 AM EST on January 14, 2017
I only asked for the original because it is likely a 48kbps WMA file, which is crap by all accounts, but probably the best that is available, considering the PSP files decode completely broken with the current version of VGMStream.
by TheUltimateKoopa at 1:18 AM EST on January 14, 2017
Oh look, another person who's been tricked by a fake YouTuber who posts crappy remixes of The Flinstones, and makes weird remixes that he calls "High Quality Rips".

They aren't actually "rips" in "high quality". The term "High Quality Rips" is used by him, and immature fans of him, to refer to his remixes, where the original tunes are referred to as "Low Quality Rips".
by kode54 at 1:36 AM EST on January 14, 2017
I should have known it was something dumb like that.
by Jasper at 1:58 AM EST on January 14, 2017
First, they're in fact very good remixes of Epic Flintstones, thank you very much.

Second, he's asking about the quality difference between these two videos, neither of which are Snow halation or Puzzle Room or Orkorborkor or any of that:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiou6g9M9NU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0WSReU0tUg

To which I say to the OP: I don't see or hear any quality difference between those two. YouTube's client-side video player is unfortunately a very large piece of fancy code which makes lots of decisions for you, like which stream it should render.

Try clearing your cache or using a different browser and perhaps the quality will become consistent.
by Mygoshi at 4:18 AM EST on January 14, 2017
I don't know, I find the second video better in quality, pretty close but not the same. But I said that I used the exact same settings for uploading the two videos, so my question was why the quality changed.
by kode54 at 6:14 PM EST on January 14, 2017
The first video is 480p with 128kbps AAC audio. The second video is 720p with 128kbps Opus audio.

Comparison of YouTube media encoding options

Does this make sense to anyone?
by RebeccaSugar at 8:46 PM EST on January 14, 2017
@TheUltimateKoopa
Yes, Youtube has a fucky streaming quality to begin with. It's better than Dailymotion and most streaming sites of course, but not by much.

I don't know hot to help the OP, this may be out of our hands, and also LOL @ Siivagunner. I don't know why people still find the same 5 jokes funny. They're stale as hell, and the one pushing the stupid snow halation garbage and weaboo crap is that has-been Triple-Q.
by Kurausukun at 10:37 PM EST on January 14, 2017
...you do know that Triple-Q left the team early and that he only contributed a small portion of Snow Halation rips, right?
by Jasper at 12:49 AM EST on January 15, 2017
man it's a hot one.
by Mygoshi at 5:47 AM EST on January 15, 2017
@kode54 : I don't really understand. The first video is 720p, and I said I used the same video codec, same settings. Why it can be different?
by kode54 at 3:42 PM EST on January 15, 2017
Ah, I see. youtube-dl was preferring the DASH streams, which peaked at 480p in the first video. The pre-muxed MP4 stream of the first video is 720p with 192kbps AAC-LC audio.

The second video has more formats, including 128kbps Ogg Vorbis and 160kbps Opus, which is at the original sample rate of the input audio, while the rest are all downsampled to 44100Hz.
by Mygoshi at 12:24 PM EST on January 16, 2017
Ad why is that?
by RebeccaSugar at 4:37 AM EST on January 18, 2017
@Kurausukun
I don't care who's working on what, It's still a god awful fad and needs to die ASAP. The channel is nothing but try-hard repeat humor that caters to people with some of the most pathetic sensibilities around. The humor is too safe and repetitive, it's fucking maddening.

I WILL admit that there are a few "Diamonds in the Rough". I grinned like an idiot during the Krabby Patty Pilotwings mix, along with a select others. If only the entire channel was OC, then I'd be happy as cat in a field of catnip.

by Kharaxel at 1:29 PM EST on January 20, 2017
@RebeccaSugar
"I don't like it, therefore it's shit."
Though I'll admit that I wish they would upload less, so I can not get my subscriptions spammed.
And the comments under the "rips" are fucking garbage, but hey, youtube comments being shit. What else is new?
by Mygoshi at 6:32 AM EDT on March 19, 2017
Sorry to bump this thread, but I really want to know why when I use the same settings to upload the same video, YouTube uploads it Opus 160kbps or AAC 192... Why is that?? How to only upload at maximum quality (Opus 160kbps) everytime ?
by G-Boy at 7:22 AM EDT on March 19, 2017
@TheUltimateKoopa
OK, I don't want this to turn into another rage thread, but... SiIvaGunner is not a fake YouTuber, and I'm not immature because I think he's funny sometimes. Please respect people's opinions. I've followed his channel in a long time now, and most of his memes are annoying and stupid, I know. His fans are very immature and have called me a "newfag" just because I criticize people who randomly say they've "lost their virginity" in the comment section and get tons of likes for no reason, and they always try so hard to be witty and cool, but that doesn't stop me from thinking some of his "high quality rips" are catchy.

I watch his channel because I think some of the remixes are clever, and I love many of his videos (like the "Slider" remix and "Waluigi's Taco Stand", for example), but I don't like the attitude of his fans. But that's just my opinion, and what you say is just your opinion, so please calm down. As Kharaxel said, don't be like "I don't like it, therefore it's shit!".
