USF For Linux ? by Meuhcoin at 12:01 PM EST on January 16, 2007
Hi everyone.
I've been listening to USF files for quite a while now, but I recently switched to Linux not a long time ago. Unfortunately, I lost the ability to play USF files : I can't find any player that support them, and the plugin only works with Winamp.
Does anyone here know about a player on Linux that could play USF file ? Or, even better, an XMMS plugin (Too bad Winamp plugins for input don't work with XMMS) ?
Do you think it will work if I try to install the plugin on Winamp with Wine ?
Thanks for your help !

64th note will run in winamp with wine.
At least that has been my experience with winamp 2.95.

That's the closest thing that'll ever run USFs on Linux for now, from what I've heard. Since 64th Note is too reliant on the Windows API (windows.h), it is likely not able to run on Linux without a complete rewrite. This is also the case for Mac OS X.

Wine is pretty much the best way to go.

Yup. I second that. Been using Winamp 5.3 on wine for half a year, now. You just have to make sure that Wine uses ALSA instead of OSS, because OSS is much less stable than ALSA.

Thanks !
Just tried it and it works just fine. It's a bit ugly (Wine seems to think that Winamp is three different applications...), but that will do.
I was wondering if it would be possible to write a plugin for XMMS that would use Wine to play the USF files trough Winamp, somehow...I don't really think that can be done, but maybe...
Anyway, it works so I won't complain. Thanks again !

If you want you can run Winamp like this:

wine explorer /desktop=default,1024x768 /path/to/winamp/winamp.exe

This will open a fake Windows desktop running Winamp as you are used to.

You could rip them into mp3s or OGG for convenience.

That way you could just natively play them with xmms, or even your portable music player. Winamp has native output plugins that you can rip to wave with, and other plugin are on the net with which you can rip to whatever you want.

On the other hand, usfs are much more space-efficient than oggs. I play them in Winamp, until I find a better way.
