Ape Escape 1 and 3 Ripping by Fleety at 10:50 PM EDT on May 23, 2019
Are Ape Escape 1 and 3 instruments and midis rippable? I know 3's midis are rippable but currently no one can figure out the instruments (besides this guy on YouTube supposedly). I don't know anything about Ape Escape 1's status though.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the original Ape Escape streamed? Could've sworn someone here confirmed that a long time ago but it piqued my interest as well, the game has some good tracks! Nice find either way.

The original AE is sequenced. However, the PSP port is streamed.

Yes Ape Escape 1 is sequenced.
I've made a PSF rip of it years ago.
It's using Sony's SSsq/SShd format as found in other games such as Alundra 2, Arc the Lad 3, The Legend of Dragoon, Wild Arms2, etc..
Mostly games by SCEI from 1999 and up.

Well that's good to know! I remember trying to rip the midi files and samples from the PSF set using both VGMTrans and VGMToolbox years ago but it never worked, might take a dab into this once more again someday.
by bxaimc at 10:17 PM EDT on May 24, 2019
They’re using a similar set up in AE3 except the sequences are midi while the headers/banks remain SShd.
by Fleety at 10:57 PM EDT on May 24, 2019
That's good to know. Is there anyway to get instruments or midis from these Sony SSsq/SShd formats? It seems no one has had any luck with Ape Escape 1 in that regard.
by Squaresoft74 at 3:26 AM EDT on May 25, 2019
You can use Sssq2mid to convert sequences.

I don't know if there is any tool that can convert instruments from SShd/.vb

It's just the SShd headers that are custom, .vb are standard PS1 samples.

Ah nice, yeah I got the midis from Ape Escape 1. Here's a download for the midis if anyone wants them along with the instrument files if anyone wants to try and rip those. bxaimc already did Ape Escape 3's midis.

I wrote a VH/VB (VAB) to WAV output feature in my Generic PSF Utility app years ago. It can simply be accessed from the GUI.

The app uses a reverse-engineered function from the Sony PlayStation PSYQ SDK called SsPitchFromNote to accomplish this.

It isn't always perfect -- some samples seem to require extra SDK functionality that hasn't yet been reverse-engineered.

That said, eventually, I will add support for SShd...

Oh nice, that is great to hear. I'm having difficulties doing VAB to WAV with Ape Escape 1's .vb files. I'm not quite sure how to do it in Generic PSF Utility.

Same here, I didn't see a way to convert the VB files to WAV with his tool. Any idea guys? Be a lot easier if these were VAB's though, can convert those to DLS or SF2 using VMGTrans.
by Fleety at 4:42 PM EDT on May 28, 2019
It seems instead of Ape Escape being .vh/.vb (VAB), it's .vb/.sshd. Interested in the sshd support. I was able to listen to the .vb files simply by using vgmstream.

I also forgot you can convert them to WAV in Foobar2000 with the vgmstream plugin but they'll come out just as they are when you listen to them, mashed up together and not looped. Would much rather have a way to just convert these VB to SF2 or DLS so they're playable with the midi files.

Also, do you happen to know about the Discord server?
