Interesting phenomenon in a Mario Kart 64 USF by rubidinger at 10:51 PM EST on February 12, 2008
I had track 16 - Winning Results on infinite loop for awhile when I noticed something strange--the melody switched. This didn't seem to make any sense to me because it had been playing for at least thirty minutes, and a friend of mine assured me that the cause of my hearing it was personal insanity. This wasn't enough for me, so I bumped up the track time to 150 minutes and started seeking around for the switch. Sure enough, around 111 minutes in, a distinct change in the melody took place. It repeated for one or two loops, then went back to the usual melody.

Has anyone else noticed this? I can't understand why a simple 1.5-minute song would suddenly change its melody after almost two hours of looping. Is it some kind of obscure error? Is it even possible to idle on the results screen long enough to hear this? Do other MK64 tracks do this?

Edit: I opened the track on infinite loop again earlier and heard the melody switch around 54-55 minutes in, so the one near 111 minutes isn't the first.

Just checked this out and that is indeed weird. When I first read this, I was wondering if the melody switch was to Totaka's Song (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Totaka%27s_Song#Totaka.27s_Song), not being able to remember off the top of my head if this game was one of those suspected of having it. But it's not.

Wow, that is pretty interesting..it sounded to me at one point as if it was going into Totaka's Song, but I'm not sure. I wish that seeking wasn't so long to listen to it. :)

That variation is also included on the original soundtrack where it plays immediately after the first loop. The sound engineer probably just felt easter-eggy when implementing the track.

9th Sage: With fast seeking enabled, it doesn't even take a second to fast-forward one minute, though results may vary on specs. Took 40 seconds for me to get to the passage in question.

That's kinda neat, I never knew that existed! :)
It just sounds like the sound tech. did some jamming out and sneaked it into the game.

Recordings or it didn't happen.

Prime Blue, I've got the soundtrack CD, called Race Tracks, available through Nintendo Power back in the day (it's really good for an American game soundtrack; no missing tracks or anything). BUT... the variation heard 55 minutes into the USF is NOT present on that track on the CD.

Japanese version of the track is here. Passage in question starts at 1:40.

The Original Song reminds me of a laundromat and the movie Mouse Hunt but either way it way have originally been the song but was scrapped because it sounded like shit compared to the one we all know.

Here's the MP3 for convenience: http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/11/9/1574507/Marrio%20Kart%2064%20-%20Hidden%20Song%20at%20111%20Minutes%20Track%2016%20USF%20-%20Winning%20Results.mp3

Do'h, no wonder...I didn't have Fast Seek enabled since reinstalling things onto my laptop. :P
