what format is Brawl\'s music in? by Franpa at 4:18 AM EST on March 5, 2008
hi, im having trouble finding out where to get the original files because people are uploading gigabyte torrents of mp3's... do the original files = a gigabyte? or is it just that size because idiots think mp3 is better?
what is the original format and what is it's file extension. thank you.
The Original File Extension is .brstm. You can find it on the Brawl ISO or download it here: http://thepiratebay.org/tor/4009466/Smash_Bros._Brawl_Music_ripped_from_the_game_disc_(314_tracks) The Files can be played with in_cube without any Problems. I think we talked about this Notes in the Brawl Thrad in this Forum already but I thin your Question is answered now.;) Greetz, DjKnuX
The files will play using in_cube, but there is a bug in it. When they're supposed to loop, there's a pop/click/noise. It's not supposed to do this. HCS is aware of the bug, but has sworn off working on in_cube anymore. If you want BRSTM to play 100% correctly for you, you'll need to download VGMstream. It's not a Winamp plugin yet. It's a command line tool right now. The idea is for it to replace in_cube. VGMstream works great for the files it supports, but it's supported list is much much smaller than in_cube's is, which is one of the reasons it's not replacing in_cube yet.
Also, chances are that it'll be smaller as MP3s, than it would be as BRSTMs. And, if there's an actual CD Audio OST available, it might be higher quality than the BRSTMs, because the BRSTMs are in 32 khz, as opposed to 44.1 khz. The problem is, is that in most instances, the MP3s you'll find were made from the BRSTMs. Thus, even though they may be encoded at a higher rate than 32, they were still encoded from files that were originally 32 khz. On top of that, if they *were* made from the BRSTMs, then they most likely have a pop/click/noise at the loop point, because they were made into MP3s using the buggy in_cube. If you're patient, you can wait for this (March 4th 6:19 post). This person is doing a full rip of the the SSBB music in the highest quality he can find. If he uses BRSTMs, he does the looping manually, so ti should remove the worry about pops at the loop point. However, unlike BRSTMs, MP3s don't support looping, and this rip will only be looped once, instead of twice (if I'm not mistaken).
So in review: BRSTMs are the original format, playable using in_cube which has a small bug in it. VGMstream plays them correctly, but isn't a Winamp plugin yet. The currently available MP3s are most likely made using the BRSTMs, and the buggy in_cube (though not necessarily). If you wait a bit, a very high quality rip will be available soon (though it doesn't loop twice). Hope that helps. Mouser X over and out.
Aah, I hadn't realized in_cube was eventually going to become phased out in favor of VGMstream. So the plan is to make a Winamp plug-in based off of it eventually?
