"Thank you HCS!!!! Love the JFG soundtrack!! you da man! "

I agree with him.

But I have one question.U made the firs Get Force Gemini Rip with this "Driver".Whats about now with this driver?Do u have fixed the problems with it or do u have used the normal ripping method?

Thx for ur great work.

PdZ

P.s. If noone is tagging the set, I could play the whole game to tagg/rename/time it, if u want.
by hcs at 3:38 PM EDT on July 16, 2005
The "driver" I had used for the first rip was directly from the libaudio devkit. Apparently Rare made significant changes to this, though they kept the basic interface intact, so the driver didn't work too well. This new rip is a normal rip, all of the code and data straight from the game. So the generic driver is still useless for most games.

As far as I know no one has yet offered to tag the set so if you're up to it go ahead.
by PdZ at 6:39 AM EDT on July 17, 2005
Ok i will tagg the set.
It could be, that I use 2-3 weeks for this tagging.Because of 1 week vacation and the Knowing, that this Game is very difficult (I've played it but it was to hard, 4 years ago).

Ok iam at work now.
Tagging as much as i can until Iam on vacation.

bye bye for a week.

Any chance on doing a Doom64 set perhaps? I have need of the music for PC doom stuff.

by hcs at 1:37 PM EDT on July 21, 2005
Doom 64? *shrug*

If any one of the half dozen people who actually requested Jet Force Gemini would rip it instead of PdZ who'll have to play through it the first time that would really be nice. I mean, I can understand why people can't rip USFs on their own, but I leave the tagging up to the masses because it's something anyone familiar with the music can do. I don't want to focus the load on a few "dedicated taggers", helpful as they may be.
by hcs at 1:44 PM EDT on July 21, 2005
and by "rip it" I meant "tag it" in that first line.
dang, I need to add editing to this thing
by FBX at 12:22 AM EDT on July 23, 2005
Well I mean rip a USF set for Doom 64. I'll worry about tags later, but I'd like to have the USF version at least ripped so I can test it out in winamp.

Obviously I could just record the music myself from the N64, but that's already been done many a time. This would be the first chance at an actual code set instead of an analog recording.
by Prokopis at 7:59 PM EDT on July 23, 2005
[...]dang, I need to add editing to this thing[...]

Yes. My perfectionistic, obsessive self definitely agrees with that.

Oh, and some rudimentary form of quoting through tags maybe? And perhaps have each thread's topic as the browser's title after "HCS Forum - " and let the random quote appear only in the forum index page. And also maybe something softer to my poor, aging eyes as a background please? Oh, and world hunger and poverty; let's not forget about them too. Kindly fix 'em as well while yer at it.

Pro out.
by hcs at 8:42 PM EDT on July 23, 2005
Waaaay down the threads list you'll find one called Feature Requests. See how much attention I pay to even the ideas I come up with.

So, you're very active, this time, aren't you, hcs? So many new rips planned. You didn't take any drugs, did you?! :P No, no, but if it comes to sets like Paper Mario or Pokemon Stadium, I'll tagg them. Haven't tagged for long time.

I worked on DK64 again tonight, unfortunately no success. I managed to get everything cleared out that I wanted, only audio running, but PJ64 USF and 64th Note refuse to cooperate. Normal PJ64 and 1964 both run the save state with the intended effect.
by AI-M at 9:50 PM EDT on July 30, 2005
I think it might be a bug in 64th note.

I thought DK64 and Zelda MM were similar since they were the only games that needed the expansion pak (8MB memory)
by hcs at 11:16 PM EDT on July 30, 2005
Not really too many similarities, Rare games just have a tendancy to do things in completely bizarre ways.
And I'm sure it is a bug in my programs that's preventing this from working.
by hcs at 6:57 PM EDT on July 31, 2005
Stefan's Bomberman 64 tags are now up. It looks complete but I don't have time to look over it now so it'll stay in prelim until I get back.
You may notice fewer tracks, apparently a lot of tracks were the same, I assume this was just to fill up space (it's a weird, brief little track). Thanks to Stefan for clearing those out.
by Anonymous at 1:56 AM EDT on August 1, 2005

Erm.... Perfect Dark, Rogue Squadron, Conker's Bad Fur Day anyone? And just for reference, amount of memory in a console has nothing much to do with the sound code. :)
by Lunar at 9:47 AM EDT on August 1, 2005
"<i>You may notice fewer tracks, apparently a lot of tracks were the same, I assume this was just to fill up space (it's a weird, brief little track). Thanks to Stefan for clearing those out.</i>"

Yeah those were in the game itself on the soundtest [you may know]. It seemed bizarre when I played the game first years ago. It's not even <i>used</i> for anything.
by Clements at 9:50 AM EDT on August 1, 2005
Erm.... Perfect Dark, Rogue Squadron, Conker's Bad Fur Day anyone?

Perfect Dark and Rogue Squadron did not require the expansion pak to run, although in PD's case you could only access the Combat Simulator without the expansion pak. Rogue Squadron only opened up an optional Hi-res mode, much like Turok 2, Vigilante 8 games, Star Wars Ep1 Racer, South Park and many more.

Conker's Bad Fur Day did NOT use the expansion pak at all. DK64 and Majora's Mask are the only two games I know that required the expansion pak in order to run.
by Anonymous at 3:37 PM EDT on August 1, 2005
I stand corrected on Conker, and I didn't realize AIM meant expansion pack ONLY games. Guess I should have read that a little closer. But I mainly posted that post to inform AIM that expansion packs have nothing to do with sound code.

Josh W didn't remove the logo since it wasn't part of the actual music set, instead it is a sound effect.

Hovever, in the next few days i will do a rerip of the set with a few more optimizations and i plan on adding the logo to it.

Regarding chat, pick an IRC network and set up a channel, easy as that. If you're allergic to #psf we can set up #usf on irc.lfx.org so everyone else can more easily keep in touch.

A much-requested game is in the automated ripping process as I type, should be ready by morning. Suffice to say it has over 140 tracks (and even more that won't play at the moment...)

[edit]

Doubutsu no Mori (Animal Forest) is up.

There's a 104 track gap that seems to load sequence data but won't play. Are there "secret tracks" that you have to unlock somehow in this game?

And I hate that singing dog.

by unknownfile at 4:10 PM EDT on September 7, 2005
BEWARE THE SINGING DOG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111111

Anyways...

I managed to identify a couple of tracks:

0x2b - Menus (when Totakeke asks you to set stuff up)
0x2c - Shop (I can't remember who the name of the shopkeeper was in the Japanese version, but he's the tanuki lookalike)
0x2f - Arrival (when the train gets in) (duplicate is 0x3f)
0x46 - Title Demo

Songs C0 to F9 are all Totakeke's songs.

Notes - The music for the game was composed by Kazumi Tokata, or so track sparsef4 indicates.

Yes, that's right, it's that tune from Mario Paint that Kazumi has put into a lot of games he's worked on. This tune also exists in Zelda 4 - Link's Awakening and Yoshi's Story.
by Josh W at 4:15 PM EDT on September 7, 2005
I came across several strange things when doing an analysis of Pokemon Stadium 2.

The first is that i noticed the similarities between it and Yoshis Story are amazing, i would think that a lot of the code was shared between them.

Also because of this i noticed that library routines werent being recognised - maybe because some of them were slightly different.

I manually went in and found __osDisableInt, __osRestoreInt, osViBlack, __osViInit

I am thinking that this might be a different revision of the Library.

My school is still not giving me internet access for infractions last year I have already been punished for. So I'm taking out my anger and free time on ripping.

Paper Mario now up.
I did this the same as as I did Animal Forest, by looking through every function until I found one that looked like a song select. Brute force all the way.
Jet Force Gemini by hcs at 8:51 AM EDT on September 8, 2005
This was the most requested set when I ripped it, yet no one has sent me so much as an incomplete tracklist in two months. Maybe you think someone else will do it... in any case I'd really like to see this tagged. So please, if you think you know the game tag or time it and let me know.
by Maxwill at 10:53 AM EDT on September 8, 2005
Hcs, I checked your Paper Mario rip and sadly most of the songs are missing. One same song is there 9(!) times. Could you please check that?
Thanks.
by hcs at 11:00 AM EDT on September 8, 2005
missing how? simply not in the list or are some tracks silent?
I suppose it's possible that there's a function for a different bank of sequences... I'll see if I can locate it.
by Mouser X at 12:38 PM EDT on September 8, 2005
I'm liking the Mischeif Makers sst. It sounds pretty neat so far. Which reminds me. I need to get into gear and add track times/titles to some sets that I've had for awhile (Golden Sun 1 (GSF) mainly comes to mind, though I've been working on Zelda 4 swords (also GSF) and Zelda4: Link's Awakening). If I get on it, perhaps I'll finish those, and start working on Jet Force Gemini (though my ability to add titles will be quite limited, as I've never played the game). Thinking about it, Golden Sun 1 is almost done, the track times are complete to Zelda 8: 4 Swords (if I recall correctly), as is the track times to Zelda 4: LA. That being the case, all I should need is title/artist info for Zelda8 (which could be tough, since I've never played the 4 Swords section, and to do so requires someone else to play with (and there's no one in my area that has it, that I know of))and Zelda4 (which requires another play through of Zelda4 to complete that...). Basically, if I ignore the need for track titles, then I'm more than 50% done... Yah, I'd rather not ignore that info, but I may need to to get these "released" (meaning allow eaiser access to for others to take over where I left off). If I do that, then maybe I can start timing some other sets.

Anyway, yah, I really should be doing more than I am. Perhaps later... When I'm done listening to the sets that are now available (I also thought that Bust a Move '99 was good, or whatever it's called). Mouser X over and out.
by Maxwill at 8:33 AM EDT on September 9, 2005
No, some songs are not in the list. I've played
the game and made an mp3 rip, so I knew the songs, but many songs are missing in the set (most non-ost songs, but some ost-tracks too).
by hcs at 10:08 AM EDT on September 9, 2005
Weird... there must be another bank I haven't found yet.
as for the song that's repeated 9 times, that's just what's used to fill in blank spaces in the song list.

[edit]
can you tell me somewhere in the game where a song not in this set plays, and maybe email me a save state from this point?

I've gotten Wedge009's Paper Mario tags and put them up, and in the process of listening to them I noticed that the one he has labeled as 1-04 Mario's Theme.miniusf will be cut off by the default silence detection of 6 seconds. Blast.
I should probably disable silence detection by default.

Note: Maxwill, I'm still looking forward to seeing your tags whenever you decide to send them (if you want to wait until I've looked for those missing tracks that's fine), I just wanted to put these up so people will have something to go by for the prelim set for the time being.

Sequences in Paper Mario can have 4 sections specified. There are 143 sequences in the game, though the sequence bank numbering goes up to 152 (the number of tracks I ripped). Thus we now have explained why one track repeats 9 times, it's the 9 entries in the sequence bank that all point at the same sequence.
I've been able to change the section playing, but I haven't figured out how many sections a given track has. What I'm doing instead is ripping sections 1,2, and 3 for all tracks (section 0 was ripped in the preliminary). That's a total of 608 tracks potentially, though I'm sure a very large number will turn out to be duplicates. This is the only way I have at the moment for ensuring that nothing is missed.
There is a whole lot of sequence data in this game, though, 698 KB to be exact.
by hcs at 8:56 PM EDT on September 13, 2005
Paper Mario is now COMPLETE.
There are 607 tracks rather than the hypothesized 608 because a single track failed to rip in one section.

I look forward to someone sifting through all these to pick out the variants and event themes. The first digit in the file name is the section number, so sparse095, sparse195, sparse295, and sparse395 are all track 95, just different sections (this the the "Story of the Stolen Stars" track in all it's three-part glory, plus another bit that I don't know).
Though in some cases the four sections are the same I've found that most of the time there is a variant somewhere, sometimes quite a different song.

I'm done tagging Jet Force Gemini. I failed to identify two of the tracks, which are sparse2C and sparse36. Also, identifying all the departure and landing SFX was something I could not do. I don't even know if they are departure and landing SFX, but it sounds like that. In total 80 tracks. Just have to rename them. Also, since there was no info in the credits I do not know who composed the music. However, no tracks appear to be missing.

Paper Mario tags updated again, a few more revelations on wedge009's part, a few corrections on my part, and some unreleased track reordering to better reflect the order they appear in the game.

Also, I had an idea just now about the apparently missing Toad Town variations... it involves a bunch of tracks which sounded the same at the end of the sequence list, maybe their other sections contain the missing themes. I'll take a quick look soon.

Sam Palmer's Extreme G tags are up.
Pokemon Stadium by hcs at 10:40 AM EDT on September 21, 2005
Just to clarify one more time what these two sets I uploaded are:
ps1prelim.zip is from the Japan-only Pocket Monsters Stadium.
ps2prleim.zip is from Pokemon Stadium, released in Japan as Pocket Monsters Stadium 2.

Pokemon Stadium 2, or Pocket Monsters Stadium GS, is very differently structured (and has a whole lot of debug stuff left in), so I was unable to quickly rip it after figuring out these two (which were essentially the same). You'll notice that PS2 includes almost all of the songs from PS1.

The ripping was a bit difficult, as there wasn't a proper song select function. Instead I had to manually read from the table of offsets, then read the next offset and subtract to find the length, then pass that along to the loading function. This was complicated by the fact that the last entry in the list was a valid sequence, but there was no next entry to get the size from, so I just looked for the header of the next chunk of data in the ROM.
The sequences (and a whole lot of other data besides) are stored in a "Yay0" format, which I haven't seen before (though I've seen "Yaz0" with some frequency in Nintendo games).

[edit]

also let me note that even though I've never played a Pokemon game I like a lot of these songs (primarily from Super Smash Bros. Melee)

Daikatana unfortunately has one track broken, and it isn't the fault of a sloppy rip. With nothing else changed but the song number this song will always crash at 1:15. I haven't encountered it in the game (not that I've played it for more than ten minutes), but my suspicion is that it sounds like it plays during the credits. I'm going to test it out on my V64jr and see if it still crashes on that track, in which case
a) maybe it's incomplete and unused (unlikely) or
b) it has to play at a specific point in the game

and if it works fine I'll know something is wrong with PJ64 (wouldn't be the first time).

[edit]
why do I always write Shadowgate "Shadow Gate" the first time?

Maxwill's tags for Pokemon Stadium are now up, excellent as usual, though I must say I question his assignment of the genre as "Action"...
by Maxwill at 9:52 AM EDT on September 26, 2005
It's hard to figure out the genre of PMS.
It's action, rpg, battling, fighting, whatever.
I decided for Action, but you can change it, if you want.
by Maxwill at 10:58 AM EDT on September 26, 2005
I've send you my taggs for Shadowgate 64. Was easy. Enjoy!
by hcs at 11:10 AM EDT on September 26, 2005
Jesus Christ, he's fast. Take a look at his neurokinetics, they're way above normal.

Also, I tested out Daikatana, that song does play, but not for much longer than the non-crashing length of the USF. So you're not missing much.

0x02 - menus
0x03 - game point
0x05 - tournament standings
0x09 - match intro
0x0a - in game theme
0x0b - in game theme
0x0d - in game theme

0x23 - alternate of 0x01, also shorter

There you go. Oh, and we all owe hcs Pepsi for his efforts. ;p
by marioman at 3:42 PM EDT on September 27, 2005
Pepsi? What about Coke? We must be fair or else we will lose sponsors. :)

Anyway, thanks hcs for the Mario Tennis rip. I can't quite figure out what it reminds me of: Mario Golf Advance Tour, Wave Race, or....something. I can't remember. But, it sounds great.

Thanks a lot.
by hcs at 4:14 PM EDT on September 27, 2005
Actually Pepsi has an exclusive contract with my university so it's all I can get (easily). We switched from Coke last year.
by Mouser X at 7:15 PM EDT on September 27, 2005
I'm glad to see Mario Tennis ripped because, if memory serves me correctly, Motoi Sakuraba was the one who composed it (with of course high regards to Koji Kondo, as he's the one who originaly made the Mario music, which Sakuraba based these tunes off of). As I said, though, I'm not 100% sure on that, but that is why I've been wanting it. Thanks again HCS! Mouser X over and out.
by unknownfile at 4:44 AM EDT on September 29, 2005
There are also rumors a new set is in the works...
by Mouser X at 6:00 AM EDT on September 29, 2005
If it's Megaman 64, I call tags on that one. Actually though, I've been wanting to do it myself, but I have no way of finding the referance points to scan in the savestate (the stuff stored in A2 when it hits the "osCreateThread" function). Biggest reason why I wanted to rip it is because I wanted to include the spoken segments as well as the music (which would probably done with two USFLIB files because I realize that not evryone is going to want the spoken parts).

But that's probably not what you're refering to... Mouser X over and out.
by unknownfile at 11:09 AM EDT on September 29, 2005
I can only hint that hcs might be doing the newest rip.

In other news...

[b]64 Trump Collection[/n]
is some weird card game that I took a look at. It uses a lot of lib calls, but it's completely useless due to it lacking the alSeqpSetSeq functions. Feh.
by hcs at 11:13 AM EDT on September 29, 2005
I've worked on Wipeout 64, Mega Man 64, and Rocket: Robot on Wheels and had similar unsuccess with all of them. It's weird... I found the functions in Wipeout that actually switch songs in the music test, but I was unable to identify anything that actually played a song, just stuff that changes the numbers (which nothing else reads) and writes the names.
by Mouser X at 11:29 AM EDT on September 29, 2005
Well dang for that then. Something to note about Megaman 64 is that it is a port from the PSX to the N64. Perhaps that's messing things up some. Obviously, I can't offer any help from my end. I'm sure you've tried it, but what about Josh W's "method" of finding the music select functions? Honestly, I didn't really understand the description he gave of it, but I assume that you did. Did that help at all? Also, in the case of MM64, some of the audio is streamed. I'm pretty sure most (if not all) of the music is sequenced, but the spoken parts are streamed off the ROM. At least, I assume such. I was playing around with the ROM inside PJ64, and stopped the Dlists (I think that's what they were. It stopped video playback, whatever it was), and the spoken bits kept playing, until the entire sequence finished. It was about 1 minute long before it got done. After that, nothing happened, as though the game crashed (which is what I, more or less, assumed what happened).

That probably doesn't help much, but at least now you know that MM64 probably isn't quite standard, as it most likely uses both sequenced and streamed audio, as well as the fact that it's a PSX port. And yes, I would have ripped PSFs of it a long time ago, except that I've heard ripping USFs is a little easier. There's also the fact that I'm not really to sure where to start for ripping PSF files either...

[EDIT] If I could find a place in MM64 where you can change the music, without moving, walking, ect., and I sent a savestate of before, and after the change, would that help? If yes, I'll see what I can do (but I can't garantee anything. School is being a major pain).

Anyway, I greatly thank you for your dilligent efforts, and hopefully you'll get these things figured out. Mouser X over and out.

While Josh's description made something like sense to me I was unable to get his system working, so I'm back to my "stare at code and wait for revelation" method.

The music specification at the beginning of the game is usually sufficient to find how things work, the save state might be helpful if something's missing, but I can always play the game for a few seconds to find a convenient change point.

I suspect it isn't as nonstandard as you think. While it doesn't use the standard sequence player it does use the synthesis library (as does nearly every other game I've ever seen).

hcs sez:

Megaman sucks.

UF sez:

Can't rip it, huh?

hcs sez:

no, and mouser wants the voices. And they are horrible.

Long time ago...and Iam here to see, whats going on.Very good work hcs and co.
I see u ripped Mario Tennis, hcs. This is very fine.
I hope, that sometimes it would be possible for someone to Rip the Music of DK64 and Snowboard Kids.

Yesterday, I was visitting the mainpage and i was shocked. Was it real?So much Rips?Iam glad to see whats going on.Now iam at the end with my bad english and I hope u all will continue with ur great work. Bye bye
by hcs at 10:50 AM EDT on September 30, 2005
I just got Snowboard Kids working, but it's really slow (uses way too much CPU even with Audio HLE). I'll see if I can clean it up a bit more.
by unknownfile at 12:35 PM EDT on September 30, 2005
Hoorah for HCS!

Anyways, after I'm done playing ssbm I think I will take a look at Diddy Kong Racing for the second time.

I tagged the Mario Tennis Set a little bit (for nothing). Here are some interesting Commands for someone whos working on the Set.If someone is interested could use it.Of Course, the loopings are twice (sometimes three times, because some songs are very short - or third?! - english is my handicap):

Something to note about psfpoint is that you don't need to split the lines up. Using PdZ's post as an example:

RENAME "sparse12.ram.miniram.miniusf" "Mario Tennis - Ring Tournament Win.miniusf"
psfpoint "-title=Ring Tournament Win" "Mario Tennis - Ring Tournament Win.miniusf"
psfpoint "-length=0:06.485" "-fade=0" "Mario Tennis - Ring Tournament Win.miniusf"

becomes:

ren "sparse12.ram.miniram.miniusf" "Mario Tennis - Ring Tournament Win.miniusf"
psfpoint -title="Ring Tournament Win" -length=0:06.485 -fade=0 "Mario Tennis - Ring Tournament Win.miniusf"

It's not a big deal, but it can make life a little easier for some people, and it can cut down on file size (not that text files are big, or anything). Anyway, just thought I'd point that out, for those who want to use psfpoint (which can make tagging a lot easier, so that you can just batch tag, instead of haveing to go through and adding "Mario Tennis" to every single file). Mouser X over and out.
