Diamonds soundtrack was great, its a shame.

To be fair though I didn't really like Dimaond's soundtrack till the game came out over here and while playing it, fell in love with the soundtrack.

I doubt the same will happen with B&Ws music though, its all so... Non Pokémonish.

The old chiptunes had a cleanliness and clarity that just doesn't show/happen days.

Incidentally, can anyone hazard a guess about why the Girl's Type version of Dungeon Maker DS (aka Master of the Monster Lair) has a ~90kb inconsistency with the original game (when both are ripped via VGMtoolbox), despite the fact that they seem to have identical sequence files/samples?

I examined them both in VGMtrans but I haven't the foggiest idea what to look for.

I only just noticed today that they actually are the same game with different art assets and event scenes (and a crapload of voice acting added to the Girls Type version). It looks like the Otomate Forte project is a failure, with one original game and one rebranding with new assets....a shame, because I Will Protect You had some interesting ideas (or rather, it took old ideas and put them together in a more interesting way).

by Lunar at 6:10 AM EDT on October 30, 2010: hmm, seems complex though. first i'd have to acquire the ROM for a given soundtrack, then i'd have to extract it all to get the SMAP. once i've got that who knows what complications there'd be. and that's just for one soundtrack, when what i'm talking about would be an automated process that happens every time you rip a soundtrack. much more convenient and productive.

SEQ_GAME_MENU is more descriptive than NTR-CCUJ-JPN-0005 which is basically meaningless. were the sequence names preserved they may even help people to tag the sets properly.
VGMToolbox r688 by snakemeat at 11:27 AM EDT on October 30, 2010: I've created a beta version with the requested option. You can grab it here. NDSto2SF now has an option to use internal SDAT naming. I've added the SSEQ number as a prefix because I don't feel like creating a renaming algorithm. You can trim them if you want with any renaming tool since all prefixes should be of equal length. Some SDATs don't have internal names, in that case SSEQ#### is used.

Let me know how it works for you.

For a quick example, try 7 Wonders of the Ancient World (2007)(Hot Lava)(MumboJumbo LA)(MumboJumbo).
This would make for a massive Manly update, I know, but I think it'd be worth it.

Edit: OK, I threw something together. smapRenamer v0.1.

This little app will search for all *.SMAP files in the current folder and all subfolders and performing renaming operations. For example, you could unpack each archive to its own subfolder and run this from up top to do all your sets at once.

It's written in C# with source included if you want to monkey with it.

Edit 2: Made a quick change, re-download if you somehow got it in the 3 mins the old link was up.

by Lunar at 4:32 PM EDT on November 3, 2010: this is great, i've been using it on the few untagged sets i have for which i somehow avoided deleting the smaps like i usually would. what's awesome is that the original sequence filenames are actually on the whole very descriptive - in fact, i'd go out on a limb and say that it'd be possible to somewhat reliably tag many soundtracks with just the filenames alone (though some game experience is always better.)

i think if you (Knurek) did go ahead and update all the sets to add original filenames, it might be an idea to start a more serious tagging initiative :b try and encourage some others to tag some sets. i'd be down.

anyway, once again, very cool. thanks for making this.

by Knurek at 7:06 PM EDT on November 6, 2010: Okay, guys and gals, after some consideration, I sadly announce that things will change with the upcoming Manly update.
Mostly on the account of me having a life and wanting to keep said life.
It's just that I'm fine with ripping tunes, I'm also fine with uploading them. But updating the site's database after each update feels like such a chore it's been turning me off the updates for quite a while.
So, with the upcoming update Manly will change to match all my other hcs64 sub-sites - meaning no fancy HTML anymore *but* more rips faster than ever.
I think that's a fair trade-off, don't you agree?
And if anyone's willing to keep updating the site in my stead, then do so by all means. I just want the tunes on my hard-drive and on the site for all of you to listen to as well.

by Lunar at 6:58 AM EST on November 7, 2010: knurek, no worries! everyone appreciates the amount of work you have (and still do) put in, it's a mammoth task to have to create+curate sets AND update a web page.

having said that, how about this for a quick and dirty solution: rather than editing html indexes manually every time (urrrghh), it could be done remotely via a script to generate html pages based off of text files that contain metadata for each xsf set (the way vgmusic.com does it. example.) something like that could be used in all the xsf indexes. i'm sure that'd make life easier in the long term, but would need to be weighed against the initial investment of time to set it all up. something to think about anyway. the sets are the important thing, and most of the information that would be there is available elsewhere.
