- They should all be equivalent. I don't know of any reason to prefer any encoder over the official one. But everything should sound the same no matter which you use.

About encoders I tend to like FLAC as in winamp you can search online database to tag a song or album :P I didn't see that option with APE.. But both sound the same pretty much.

- I realized a few days ago that I was tired of waiting for someone else to rip some tunes from Grandia for me.
Me being me, the time I waited made me favor the project considerably more.
I was planning to try and fix vb2rip, but because I only had a few missing tracks I wanted, I went the easy route.
I put the Soldier Battle track .OGG files, and some light documentation in a zip, and put it up. Maybe someone else was wanting a copy of these as well.

Enjoy, if you'd like this stuff. Rip missing songs if that's your thing. Go through roughly 0x800 tracks to find hidden songs if you're crazy enough to try.

- I don't know why you make so many work on the Grandia files!
simply rip the data WITH header and rename the files to .GMS
They're playable by vgmstream, with loops!
Here's an example, from PSX and Sega Saturn!
- by ugetab at 8:20 PM EDT on July 15, 2008
- Thanks for the examples. I can definately split it up easily enough now.
I tried to get someone to explain why this info was available for vgmstream already, but I don't think it was really a big loss to have made a code. I just like the music, so I'm happy to be able to get my hands on working utilities for it, one way or another.

- by -FDM64- at 2:18 AM EDT on September 27, 2008
- Already have it ;P, but I think that the cd distributions of vg audio are higher quality than music pulled from the game. (because vg music embed into games tends to be compressed)
But I could be wrong, is the adx file spec lossless?
- by hcs at 5:33 AM EDT on September 27, 2008
- It's not lossless compared to whatever PCM they encoded it from, but it's 48khz so the CD version is downsampled from some ideal anyway. In terms of bitrate it's about half that of CD audio, and ADX is pretty durn good at that rate.
But the upshot of all this is that I don't have the flac so we'll have to wait for someone else to post it again.
edited 5:40 AM EDT September 27, 2008
Correction, the ADXs are 44100hz, not 48khz. Which puts them at around 1/4th the bitrate of CD audio. Which is still generally plenty but not enough for you.

- by wolupgm6 at 11:12 PM EDT on September 30, 2008
- Unfortunately, No. It Isn't The USF. All It Is Is A Project64 WAV Dump Looped And Cleaned Up A Bit. You See, If You Pause The Game, The Music Remains Playing, Making It Perfect For Dumping. It Removes All SFX Except The Rocket. The Plus Side To This Is That The Rocket Only Arrives On The Scene After The Initial Fall (Beginning Of Most Levels), So If You Pause It Quick Enough, You Should Get A Pretty Good Sound.

- Quality question by spyfoxguy at 10:42 PM EDT on October 15, 2008
- Which one has better quality, direct gamerips (ADX, DSP, USF, etc.) or an officially released soundtrack CD (wav)? I'm thinking the soundtrack would be better only if the music was orchestrated, otherwise the quality would be equivalent, right? I guess the ones you make won't be professionally mastered(not a big deal, as anyone who has ever bought a soundtrack can attest to)
- by Mouser X at 11:01 PM EDT on October 15, 2008
- In general, the OST is better than game audio. Usually what happens for the game is that the audio samples undergo compression to get them to fit on the cartridge (in the case of USF or other consoles), whereas the OST, even though it may be made from the same files that made the music for the game, undergo no compression. However, on newer consoles that have streaming audio, the difference between the game's audio and the OST is likely to be much less. In the case of Nintendo games though, in almost all cases, they use 32 kHz for their music, as opposed to 44 kHz (what most OSTs would be). Whether there's actually a difference between that though, I don't know. What I mean is that when audio CDs are ripped, they're usually ripped at 44 kHz. But the audio on them could be the same stuff used in the game (I believe there's ways to check the audio quality of an official CD, but I don't know them).
As for ADX, DSP, etc., the thing to remember is that those formats almost always employ some means of compression. ADX is 4-bit ADPCM (IIRC), as opposed to a CD which is, I think, 16. So as I said, in general the OST (from a CD) will likely be better quality. But for the average listener, I'm not sure how much difference that is. Personally, I go for the game audio as opposed to a CD, unless the quality difference is significant. However, from what I've gathered, I'm in the minority on this. To each his/her own, I guess. Mouser X over and out.
- by hcs at 11:49 PM EDT on October 15, 2008
- Hm, it's hard to say which of ADX or DSP sounds has "better quality". ADX has a fixed filter, while DSP has a set of 8 for each channel, which potentially gives the encoder a lot more flexibility. But then again DSP frames have a logarithmic scale with only 16 levels, from 1 to 65536 (in theory), which is less precision than ADX's linear 1 to 16383 but more range (though the range is not going to be a factor, I think). So there isn't an obvious winner without using more math than I know.
CD will be better, if you can get it.
- by CyberSpark at 2:26 AM EDT on October 16, 2008
- Yeah, the CDs would be better actually, to me anyway. Nobody usually believes me on this, but, I can most times tell the difference between a song compressed to 32khz vs one uncompressed at 44khz, or a mid-range quality Mp3s vs one encoded in [lossless] FLAC.
Example: I've heard the Super Mario Galaxy game rip in comparison to the Super Mario Galaxy Original Soundtrack. As was said, Nintendo has the habit of compressing their game's audio to 32khz. The quality of the original soundtrack, especially in lossless, is superior to the game rip, indicating that the original soundtrack isn't just the same compressed audio files thrown onto a CD.
You can also see this with The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Original Sound Track. Audio sounds crisper and has better resonance then the compressed game audio, then again this is just the way I hear it.
So... back to those Rockman/Megaman albums, anyone got any CDs?
- by nensondubois at 3:27 PM EDT on October 16, 2008
- I can usually tell the differences between different khz if given two exact same sources. Why Nintendo does this is unknown.
- by bxaimc at 4:16 PM EDT on October 16, 2008
- I think the reason Nintendo does this is because they don't want the music to interfere too much with the SFX and gameplay by distracting the player into concentrating more on the music than anything else. 32khz sounds good with Pro Logic II though, so it's enough.
- by spyfoxguy at 4:52 PM EDT on October 17, 2008

I would like to compare them to their in-game rip versions, especially Sonic Adventure 2 Battle(CD), if you have that in FLAC or other lossless codec.
As for Lego Island, as bxaimc says what format are they in? That used to be a really good game, and I might try and get it again for a laugh.

- by spyfoxguy at 11:17 PM EDT on October 19, 2008
- I'm telling winamp to output wavs from gamecube/wii files. Should I tell it to use 32khz? does the "extra" 44khz quality hurt how it sounds? I thought it sounded worse, but that was probably placebo
- by hcs at 12:05 AM EDT on October 20, 2008
- If its doing a lousy job resampling to 44.1khz it might sound worse. I recommend having it output at whatever the original frequency is; postpone resampling as long as possible. Your audio hardware likely resamples 44.1khz to 48khz internally anyway, so with luck your system will do a good job of it.
Note also that not all wii/gc files are in 32khz. First party Nintendo games usually are, but you can see 22050hz, 44.1khz, 48khz, etc.

- Is it possible to rip the music from the Sonic Gems Collection credits movie? It's a great song. The PS2 version is preferred if it uses a higher quality format.
Sonic Mega Collection has a demo movie of Sonic Advance. I'm pretty sure the music is a beta song that was never released. Can that be ripped?
The use of 32 kHz sample rate in Wii games is inexcusable. Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, I'm glaring at you. Super Smash Bros. Brawl may be understandable because it has a ton of music. Come on Nintendo, shake the bad habit!

- by marcusss at 6:07 PM EDT on October 22, 2008
- Yeah.. with all the space they have to play with and all that power of the new consoles and systems , it still amazes me they STILL choose lower sampling rates.. hmm but I guess as long as it sounds good its accepted.. - I have a copy of that album (also the Orchestra Version), but I know neither are official pressings.
However, looking with Informer tells me they have never been converted at any point to a lossy format, or at least never at any bitrate where this is noticeable; which considering the age of the discs likely rules out the few combinations of bitrates and codec where this might happen.
I'm aware that this might still not be desired, so I'm looking for a go ahead to do this. I'm familiar with EAC, but I've never bothered with a full set of CUE/LOG/MD5/SFV files for any rips I've made so I'll need to know what performs those tasks. If I do rip should I throw in scans of the cover art and booklet too?
Edit: Never mind, although those rips appear to be from the same bootleg pressings as mine.

Thanks, but I had found that website awhile back, I also found the torrent that was uploaded from that site, but sadly there are no more seeders and I've even went on that site's IRC channel to request the soundtrack or a re-seed, to no avail though. :( Also, I can't register to that site unless I have an invite.
Here's the torrent I'm talking about, it's ideal to what I'm looking for in a lossless rip (read Description):
Shenmue Album Suite [Lossless] (NO SEEDERS)
@BtEO
I do appreciate your offer but yeah, I would prefer having the rip done from the official CDs instead of the bootleg, however, since it can sometimes be difficult to find official CDs or lossless rips from official CDs, I might just request it from you anyway, but I'll still always look for a rip from an officially released version.
About the EAC stuff, I've written a tutorial, with picture illustrations and step by step instructions on how to configure EAC to make "proper" lossless rips, it's not that long nor is it a difficult process, I also have additional information on adding and MD5 file and SFV file to the archive.
@marcusss
Yeah I got an EAC version of that album too. It's quite nice but it still doesn't compare to the OST. There's this one song from the OST that I'm stuck on hearing, it puts you in this dream-like state and... it's just great. :)

I also got my hands on another promo album that sounds really cool: the Granado Espada Original Soundtrack (4-Disc) in FLAC lossless (log and cue included) that I can share. If you've never heard it before, you can listen to the entire soundtrack here. There's a lot of awesome trance music in this album. The song, "Temptation", is one of my favorites.
I have tons of other stuff too in lossless format. :D

- As far as I know the chiptune arranges were only on the web site. The doujin is The Celestial Brush - shin-la-van-show Okami Arrange Album. I didn't like it very much.
Okami OST (since I uploaded it anyway)
Smashing... Live!
now working on putting up the piano arrange (ripped the same way) and the Myst OST that someone requested

- Just out of curiosity but, do you use Exact Audio Copy to rip your CDs? I may not be important to everyone but I just figure that if something is going to be ripped in lossless, why not a few more tweaks to make it identical to the original CD? XD
Just asking a question.
Oh and I almost forgot, THANKS! I'm going to see about SmartOne's Okami rip since he has the actual CDs, but I do appreciate you uploading it anyway, and also thank you very much for Smashing Live. :)
Edit: checked out the log file for Smashing Live. Do you currently use a MATSHITACD-ROM CR-585? If so, I believe the Offset Setting in EAC should be +103. :)

- Wow... How difficult is it to rip totally lossless WAVs in EAC? I thought it was pretty straightforward...
Sorry, won't be able to upload anything until I go home. Don't have any of the stuff with me here at 'lege.
Thanks for all the offers. I want to help out as much as I can.

- I don't have that drive anymore, no. And the Myst OST I ripped with cdparanoia (as I have used to rip most of my CDs since '06), it's the closest thing to EAC on Linux.

Well, it's not at all difficult, there are just a few more configurations needed in EAC to make what's called "proper lossless" rips. For one, the Offset Correction should be added according to the CD/DVD-ROM drive that you use, you can check out accuraterip.com to find out what that offset is for your drive or just tell me the drive being used for the rip
Then there's the choice between an ISO Image (preferred) and ripping the tracks individually.
Then there's configuring the program (a check box) to tell it to create a log file for after the ripping process has completed. Log files are used mostly for others, and yourself, to check how the ripping process was done, whether the correct Offset setting was used, the track quality (as some might use defective or scratched CDs when ripping and EAC would show this).
Then there's the CUE sheet which is used to mathematically place all of the individual tracks in the correct, according to the original, positions.
And there's like a few other files that are useful. Md5 is a hash used to check for any crc errors in the audio files, useful for checking the integrity of the filse after a download.
Lastly there's the SFV (simple file verification) file which does just that, it verifies the files stored in a folder or archived in case of corruption. Here, Wiki explains it better: Wiki

OK, I'm not really familiar with that program but I hope it does work similarity to EAC.

- Thanks, CyberSpark. I'll take those things into account when I re-rip Okami (all the meta data got screwed up.) Is there an easy way to transfer the data from the online database directly to the FLAC encoding?
Manually adding tags to five CDs-worth of music is unenjoyable.
- by marcusss at 8:21 AM EST on November 9, 2008
- Yeah I just rip lossless and who wants it can have it and take my word its fine otherwise can go elsewhere to get a rip :P:P But yeah it would be nice to do it the proper way sometime soon for all my lossless rips ;-) Can't be bothered re-ripping tho.. hehe

- You know what, don't worry about that, I'll manually add the tags myself from VGMdb, that should save you some time I hope. I usually add my own tags anyway so... it's no inconvenience. :)
I've posted my tutorial online already, check it out: Proper CD Ripping and Lossless Encoding Tutorial
Note: if you rip the first disc wit ha log file, you can send it to me, or post the log file here, I'll review it and then tell you if everything is in order. Sound good? :)
I hope this helps.

- You're too kind, hcs. I wasn't really expecting this.
Here's something funny: I discovered you can listen to most of the music from Myst III: Exile if you know which files to go to. Most of them don't have an extension, but if you play them in a media player, you'll get the audio. In fact, while some are the full themes, some are solo instruments!
- by SmartOne at 10:03 PM EST on November 9, 2008
- Hcs, thanks for the uploads!
CyberSpark, great tutorial! I'll use it. I'd be happy to send/post the log files. Unfortunately I won't be able to do this until around Thanksgiving (the soundtrack is at home... and I'm here.) UNLESS... Someone could bring it to me... hmmm... maybe next weekend. I'll let you know.
Does Winamp let you edit the Album and Artist fields of all selected songs at once? Because that wouldn't be too bad.
What's a good public tracker to use?

- @SmartOne, yes it does. You have to have them in the Media Library first, but then you can edit them as a batch. (Edit Selected Items... option)

- Blah, Winamp Media Library. Never seems to organize my stuff the way I want. Not particularly friendly with chiptunes 'n' stuff.

- hcs, thanks for your sharing. Could you perhaps make some .sfv's and/or .md5's to check the file integrity? The Okami OST is huge and I want to make sure I've got it in good order. Thanks.
- by hcs at 10:18 AM EST on November 14, 2008
- md5 added.

- It appears I don't need to rip Okami anymore. Yay. My brother forgot to bring it to me this weekend anyway.
- by hcs at 1:28 PM EST on November 15, 2008
- Well, I think there are some who'd still like a rip of known provenance (e.g. EAC logs and such).
- by JILost at 3:07 PM EST on November 15, 2008
- CDs I own
Akumajo Dracula The Stolen Seal [Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia] soon to be added to that list.

- by marcusss at 8:34 AM EST on November 16, 2008
- A lossless of that would be THE BEST, JILost :P :P ^_^
- by JILost at 12:12 PM EST on November 16, 2008
- I hope you mean OoE and not the entire library. =P
I won't have OoE for four or five more days, but I plan on lossless-ing it as soon as I get it, anyway, so I guess I can just upload it when I do.
- by CyberSpark at 12:20 PM EST on November 16, 2008
- @JILost. Sup.
I have a couple of requests that I'd like to make, but I need to know something first. I'm looking for all of my rips to be from official, non-bootleg copies. You have some albums form the Sonic series that I'm interested in but every time I receive a rip from these albums they're always from bootlegs. :(
If those are indeed official albums, may I request the following to be ripped according to this tutorial:
"Digi-Log Conversation" - Sonic Adventure Original Soundtrack
"Multi-Dimensional" - Sonic Adventure 2 Original Soundtrack
"Cuts Unleashed" - Sonic Adventure 2 Vocal Collection
"Complete Trinity" - Sonic Heroes Original Soundtax
"Lost and Found" - Shadow the Hedgehog Vocal Trax
"Seven Rings in Hand" - Sonic and the Secret Rings Original Soundtrack
Super Mario World [Super Mario Bros. 1-3 + World arranged, Super Mario Bros. 1-3 + World]
Metroid Metal
Rockman X8 Original Soundtrack
LOL. Sorry, I have a lot of requests. Tell me if you're able to do these. I don't need these at any particular time btw. :)

- When I download lossless music, I usually trust that the ripper at least had some common sense and the files are indeed lossless. Then there's always Informer to play around with: http://www.neillcorlett.com/informer/
Is it really worth the effort to rip Okami all over again just for the stupid checksum files and junk like that? It takes a lot of time, and then consider the upload...
- by hcs at 3:37 PM EST on November 16, 2008
- I have a flac rip of Metroid Metal if JILost doesn't want to throw up a rip. Heh, just noticed that his name is on the back cover.
Note that this rip is of unknown provenance.

- @CyberSpark
I would have said this in the initial post, but I didn't think it'd be relevant.
Every album listed is official, non-bootleg. I went to great lengths to acquire some of them (like those European Zelda ones), but they are indeed 100% legit.
The only one of those I feel uncomfortable distributing in lossless is Metroid Metal. It's supposed to be a "sponsors only" thing and I feel loyal to Grant, so I think I'll stay that way.
That aside, you picked some awesome stuff. I'll do my best to get all of it over time.
