- I find a lot of mistakes in PSF2 sets.
Kingdom Hearts: Traverse Town. Where does the saxophone go? This is one example of a handful of buggy songs from that game.
Kingdom Hearts II: Lazy Afternoons. The melody simply drops out and all you hear is the chord progression.
Is there a reason why all the Gummi Ship songs are absent? I don't think they are streams...

Why do they choose for some of the streams to have 48000 Hz sample rate and others only 44100 Hz? I thought the difference wasn't supposed to be audible. :P

- PSF2 ripping is impossible unless you are using the ripkit.
I have tried manually ripping a game, but it requires that you patch existing code without the use of a debugger, and you can't use custom libraries. I have tried compiling libraries with both homebrew PS2 devkits AND the Sony SDK, but the logs in PSFpoint say that the IDX was invalid.
The only custom rips I know of are the Final Fantasy games, and those were done by either Neill or zoopd.
- by Knurek at 5:09 AM EST on December 4, 2008
- @uf: Well, the only thing SmartOne's post was missing was a 'chop chop, get to it', really.
Not to mention the fact that Dark Cloud is ripped already, and Rogue Galaxy/Xenosaga are mostly streamed (RG has a few beta sequenced tracks for sure, didn't look at Xenosaga, but judging from the OST it sure as hell ain't sequenced).
- by bxaimc at 3:23 PM EST on December 4, 2008

- Oh yeah, I forgot to mention earlier:
The PSF2 environment does NOT emulate a lot of the PS2 hardware, so some rips are theoretically impossible. The reason for this is that at the time HE was in its early stages, PS2 emulation was very limited. As such, Neill had to work with what he had and landed PS2 emulation on what he had of the PSX emulation core.

In my very little experience with PSF2s it seems that the hardest part is breaking out the SQ/BD/HD files from larger files. I can't seem to find a way automate the process for every game since I don't think the file lengths are included anywhere in the SQ/BD/HD sections themselves. I've seen a custom header and/or layout for each of the few games I've examined. Any ideas?
I have, however, built a tool to automate the PSF2 building process based on Neill's Corlett's mkpsf2.exe program and his PSF2Ripkit. It's just a simple front end, but allows for easy batch processing. If you can separate the SQ/BD/HD files, this will automate the creation of the PSF2s from them (good for giant sets with a ton of SFX). Check it out here. The source is in the SVN there too if anyone is interested.

And yea, I know about PGConv/P2GConv, while those are helpful, they still get the wrong times more often than not (don't support all tempo change commands, it seems). Also, they only output one loop files, so you still need to manually determine the proper, two loop duration.

http://www.shakal.net/lunar/temp/wetrixtagstimes.rar - Wetrix USF set with tags+times, ready to be put up.
I've got Let's Smash/Centre Court Tennis completely tagged and timed based on midis i ripped outta VGMTrans, so i'd be able to fully tag that just as soon as it gets ripped. *nudge*! i could probably do F-Zero X expansion kit in a flash too.

- The Rainbow Road song from the Expansion Kit is pretty cool. Any chance you could also do Talent Studio as well? "Po Pi Pa Pi" kicks major ass. It's on the Luigi B-Side album.

- Donkey Kong Country 3 GSF would be great because it has brand new great music for the GBA! Yay!
One and two also probably have a few original tracks.

- will do the donkey kong games tonight, i already have some rip notes done for donkey kong country 1, but have some mathematicals to do first.
all the rareware games i've ripped used a very simple vblank based driver, where you write a 32-bit value somewhere in the 0x3000000 range and something plays. it is always set to 0xffffffff when waiting for a command.
i am going to need to redo the existing rips to get rid of the squeaking noise that plays at the beginning of some tracks, possibly due to timing issues with the trap code.
