- Last night I took a look at the GME code, it looks like it's going to need quite a bit of modification before anything.
In the meantime, the latest build of Notsofatso will be thrown out tonight.

- @Warpstar: Maybe you could allow a delimiter to be specified by the user? I just use a hyphen, but I have seen ones that use brackets. A customization option like that would be nice.
--EDIT--
NEZPlug version 0.9.4.8 + 2 + 8 has been released. Trying to figure out what has been improved.

Lol dll only
VRC7 volume controls work for stereo only and global volume now influences VRC7 as well.
If the VRC7 is causing static try changing volume levels on the channels.

- At the risk of sidetracking things again, I only noted gscentral because it had been a while since I'd seen it. I used to visit regularly but one of the times it went down (a few years back) I stopped.

- by unknownfile at 10:52 PM EDT on September 21, 2007
- [22:50] <stupcarp> ok, since opll_calc sucks more arse than opll_calc_stereo, I decided to have opll_calc_stereo handle both mono and stereo rendering for the VRC7
Besides that no real progress has been made on the GBS front, due to the fact that the NSF core doesn't like the GBS implementation included in it.

GYM's emulation accuracy is beyond bad.

- I have my VRC7 back on the board where it belongs, so I can now go back to trying to fix the amp. I might also try to look for Tiny Toon Adventures 2 (the other game that uses the VRC7) and look at that game as well.
Also, Notsofatso support for GBS is going to be scrapped until further notice, as I want to sort out bugs with the VRC7 first, as well as other stuff.

- by unknownfile at 9:45 PM EDT on September 26, 2007
- It's been about a week.
And I guess you know what that means.
New features this time around:
GUI
- "Ripper" field only appears on the Now Playing window when data for the ripper field exists, something I wanted to have done for quite a while.
- "Type" has been renamed to "Speed".
- Did some crap with the "About" dialog.
CODE
- YM2413 tone updates, you can now choose between 7 (added MAME tones, updated merged set).
- Square wave code rolled back to the last official Notsofatso version. This can always be re-instated, but whatever.
- emu2413 drum emulation re-enabled for possible expansion.
- Fade-out support added for VRC7.
You'll notice the VRC7's output is lower than usual, this is because I still haven't figured out how to make a static filter.
The source contains the GME libraries, as there are still parts of the code that need it to compile, as well as some bmps to add onto the tabs, ala in_vgm, but were not used.
Enjoy, all one of you.

- Notsofatso update coming soon.
Changes so far:
GUI:
- If tag fields have no information assigned to them, they will not be displayed in the Play Control window
Code:
- Experimental static filter for VRC7 (very very broken)
I also plan on using UPX compression for the new builds to see how that goes.
Also, some tips on getting the most accurate sound:
- The FDS wavetable channel is twice as loud as the 2a03. I might implement volume doubling for the FDS channel later.
- On a real NES/Famicom, the DMC channel contains popping at the beginning. Disable the DMC pop reducer to get it working correctly.
- Disable "Ignore $4011 Writes" to get tracks working correctly (eg Skate or Die 2, Wardner no Mori)
In addition to this, I'm thinking of ordering Tiny Toon Adventures 2 for further VRC7 research.
- by unknownfile at 11:56 AM EDT on October 3, 2007
- Ok, I found the problem nensondubois was talking about. The VRC7 doesn't work in stereo in the last build, so I'm going to try and fix that problem.
To get around this bug you can:
- set the master volume control to 2, or
- disable stereo mode
This probably has something to do with having an indirection of a float to a short, so that will be fixed in the build.
I'm at school now, but I'll fix it and compile it when I get home.
In other news, I'm falling behind on school work.
________________
New build now up. Changes include all the crap I mentioned above, the VRC7 bug is fixed, and the FDS volume level is now doubled to be a bit more accurate. No source for this build, though.
I am also planning on implementing debugging features in a future build for the idiots who want to test their NSFs, but then again I have no experience in that field of coding because I'm a stupid person.

- Every time I try to load a large directory of NSFs in the Newest NotSo Fatso build (like that collection of homebrews linked somewhere on this site not that long ago), it'll load all the NSFs, but won't play them or show the tags. In fact, Winamp will just skip over them.
I also tried loading each individual directory. It worked...to a point. Past a certain point it messes up the playlist in the same way as above. What's going on?
Also, can someone use Schpune's source code to add bandlimited synthesis to NotSo Fatso? Since Schpune is made from NotSo it should be able to be implemented without a problem, right?
- by unknownfile at 11:22 PM EDT on October 3, 2007
- considerations taken
- by JILost at 12:30 AM EDT on October 4, 2007
- Richter X, weren't you asking for band-limited synthesis for foobar2000, too? Wasn't game_music_emu the main thing that had band-limited synthesis to make you want it in the first place? Why not use foo_gep.dll, which uses GME? Maybe I'm misremembering, though; if so, correct me.
- by Knurek at 11:08 AM EDT on October 4, 2007
- New version of NezPlug++.
Many GBS related fixes, should play all those troublesome rips correctly (anyone can confirm)?
Also, it's able to play .GB files, though you have to manually change the extension to .GBS.
- by unknownfile at 11:10 AM EDT on October 4, 2007
- OK, here's a question, who would want to load over 2000 NSFs into a playlist? I'm not sure where the issue resides but I assume it might be due to too many threads being launched, overloading the plugin.
I'll try and fix this for the next build but I can't promise anything.
- by marioman at 11:50 AM EDT on October 4, 2007
- @Knurek:
Thanks for the info. I am sure that ugetab can confirm if any troublesome GBS files have been fixed. (Since he is the GBS expert.)
- by ugetab at 4:28 PM EDT on October 4, 2007
- I didn't notice any changes to the GBS tracks that were giving me trouble, but the changes may have been to other channel coding.
On the topic of GBSs:
1. I've updated GBS2GB, and a .bin file with it to follow better GB programming procedure.
2. I've gotten Harvest Moon 2 working in BGB, and I understand the reasons for what was going wrong.
I was working on more reading for the HALT instruction in one of the newer documents on GB programming I picked up. It explained the Harvest Moon 2 problem in detail.
I applied the extrapolated fix to Harvest Moon 2, and it suddenly worked. In the same place, it explained more about the HALT instruction, so I implemented that bit into the modified GBS2GB coding, and it worked just fine with Harvest Moon 2.
Interestingly, NEZPlug accomidated 2 errors that the GBS file had:
Banks being loaded to $2000 were tagged as banks 0x05 and 0x18, referencing banks 1 and 2 in the GBS. A test of the bank information was failing because of the use of 1 and 2 in code.
The DI and EI instructions weren't functioning the way they do in BGB, and were essentially being ignored.
So, time for Knurek to grab HM2 I guess.
- by Knurek at 5:14 PM EDT on October 4, 2007
- Well, this is taken from 2CH post about the new plugin version. Sorta translated by me:
New NEZPlug version. Harry Potter.GBS plays correctly at last. Also added .GB file loading.
Magi-Nation(2001) (Interactive Imagination).gb - plays normally, because it uses the Harry Potter driver.
Bases Loaded(1990) (Jaleco).gb - plays without ch3 getting cut of because some length counters had been corrected by the current update.
Prehistorik Man(1994) (Titus).gb - plays normally because "DAEMON MODE" of GBSOUND.TXT has been implemented in the current update.
A Boy and His Blob - Rescue of Princess Blobette (1990)(Absolute Entertainment).gb
Chikyuu Kaihougun - ZAS (1992)(T&E).gb
Dragon Ball Z - Goku Hishouden (1989)(Toei).gb
Qix (1981)(Taito).gb
Should play fine, though only the exctracted GBS were checked.
There is a possibility of some errors, because the tunes weren't checked extensively. Also, other GBS files might sound bad now due to the amount of changes.
- by ugetab at 8:01 PM EDT on October 4, 2007
- Chikyuu Kaihougun - ZAS and Qix have been working for a while.
The DBZ rip listed was much better since I upgraded to NEZPlug++, but it's still got 1 problem at the loop point of track 20. I know something's up, because in BGB, it just ends, but in NEZPlug, the tone carries into the next song loop. Aside from that, the track sounds the same.
I haven't checked the other rips on a regular enough basis to know if this update made them work any better.
- by Richter X at 10:02 PM EDT on October 4, 2007
- JILost.
I'm just after something that does both bandlimited synthesis AND Stereo NSF playback. NotSo has Stereo, but no bandlimited synthesis. Foo_Gep has bandlimited synthesis, but no Stereo NSF playback. Schpune does both, but it's just a game emulator that doesn't handle NSFs natively.
Unfortunately, Kode54 never released any sort of source code for foo_gep to even let others add Stereo support to it. So I'll have to settle on NotSo Fatso. That, and NotSo lets me choose between the various VRC7 emus.
I'd much rather have one for Foobar2000, since I only use Winamp for NotSo Fatso.
- by JILost at 3:50 AM EDT on October 5, 2007
- Ahh, right, I forgot about the stereo thing. There goes that "misremembering" I was talking about. I bet there's some awesome combination like that for Linux. Stupid Linux.
- lol subject by unknownfile at 10:41 AM EDT on October 5, 2007
- Porting notsofatso to foobar2k could be serious business, but I suppose that could be a to-do.
Also to correct whoever thinks it isn't, the "tone setting" only changes the tone set and not the emulator. The old fmopl code is gone and there is no way in hell I'm putting it back in.
_________
I just took a look at the foobar2000 SDK and it is unbelievably stupid. VC is somewhat shitty compiling it in release mode so I don't really know whether I should bother with it or not.

- wow. I knew people from 2ch were perusing this board, but I never expected anything to come of discussing NEZPlug++ here. Seems the DBZ track I've been testing suddenly got fixed in the +11 release. I hope this sort of progress continues, as that would leave me with dependable GBS players for ripping with and for playback. All the stuff that's been different between 1 player and another seem to be getting resolved or explained.
I have some ideas for the GBS2GB stuff now, so I'll probably work on that momentarily. Primarily, I'd like to try a universal fix along the lines of HM2, which would remove the need for a NOP after the HALT. With some luck, it would remove any trace of that HALT byte-jump error in converted GBSs, without any need to modify the play routines.
- by Warpstar at 9:18 PM EDT on October 6, 2007
- From what I can decipher from Google's translation of the changelog, this version includes:
GBS: Sound quality of the noise channel is improved; fix of the problem with track 20 of DBZ; other small corrections (not specified)
Also some improvements to the NSF side of things: Noise channel is improved here as well, and there's some kind of addition regarding the Namco106 expansion.
- by unknownfile at 1:17 PM EDT on October 7, 2007
- well hallo thar
I was able to compile foobar's example plugin on Friday night but I cannot make any progress until tomorrow evening, as I am currently visiting relatives in that crazy French-Canadian place.
Anyways, besides foobar2000 support, I will end up fixing the VRC7 sound issues once and for all. I am going to be abandoning toneset adjustments for all future builds, as I am tired of getting nowhere with this. If anyone wants to make a toneset go right ahead as the next build will include a tone set adjustment utility.
Features planned for the next build:
- VRC7 user tone settings (see above)
- Debugging features
- Updater utility so I don't need to post here every time I update the plugin
- by kingshriek at 6:17 AM EDT on October 8, 2007
- Yeah, OffGao is doing an incredible job with the NEZPlug++ updates. I was pratically in tears of joy when he added ADPCM support to HES's. And all the GBS fixes he's doing is making NEZPlug++ the definitive GBS player - I'm pretty sure it's the only one that plays Prehistorik Man correctly.
One thing that would be cool to have is an option to force Game Boy Color mode on GBR files (yeah, GBR). One thing that GBR has that GBS doesn't is that both vsync and timer interrupts can be used simultaneously, which helps with games that use timed code to send raw samples through the wave channel. One game that can't be covered by either of the two formats currently is Little Nicky (Game Boy Color game that does the raw sample thing) and this can be easily rectified by a GBC flag in the user options.
- by nensondubois at 11:46 AM EDT on October 8, 2007

Gauntlet 2 - GB

- ok, tonight I'm going to start work on foo_input_notso, but I might just give up and play some videogames instead... a lot of code needs to be reworked in NSF.cpp, as a lot of it depends on winamp. the rest of the code isn't winamp based, though.
__
For some reason Disch thought it would be completely sane to make his own GUI libraries. I can say otherwise, as it isn't allowing the foobar raw plugin to compile. Absolute bullshit if you ask me.

- Have to admit though, by using his own libraries, he made it more compatible with the free Visual Basic 2005. I believe MFC isn't available in the free version, so DFC made it compatible with a free MS compiler...oh well. Can't have it both easy and good in this case.
- by unknownfile at 11:00 AM EDT on October 15, 2007
- just so you idiots know, i will not be releasing the new build until i have a foobar2000 port working in a somewhat stable state or Richter X shuts up and looks for a suitable plugin wrapper for his version of fb2k.
besides the usual crap with tone set adjustments, I'm also looking into adding in a localization feature so that the japanese will finally abandon the piece of shit known as NEZplug for their nsf needs. problem is, my japanese is nowhere near fluent but I'll try anyway.
oh, i'm also planning on removing DFC, as it's screwing stuff up when i build the foobar2000 build, specifically I get about 100 errors because of illegal conversion crap. surprisingly, the winamp build does not throw these errors around.

Do that, and it works fine.

What's the advantage of .GBR vs .GBS, anyway?

- NEZPlug 0.9.4.8 +2 +14. Channel mask function implemented.
Also Offgao mentions something about fixing Little Nicky rip:

- Hell yes. This is what I've been waiting for. The only thing Meridian had going for it, it no longer has.
- by unknownfile at 11:42 AM EDT on October 22, 2007
- Loose translation is that the Little Nicky GBS was going beyond bank 0x1F, he has fixed it to include a bank 0x20.
No progress on Notso on this front.

- Has there been any progress on the MDSF format for ripped Sega Genesis audio? I'd love to try it out sometime.
Also, can someone rip the GSFs to the GBA Shining Force?

- MDSF ripped format hasn't been worked on in ages because I was not willing to deal with an emulation core written in assembly in order to optimize crap.
And I might consider ripping Shining Force, but this isn't the right thread for that kind of crap.
By the way, get on irc.

- @Knurek: The new version of NEZPlug works great. Still no config box yet. (It is bound to happen one day.) Thanks for the info.
@Richter X: I'm waiting for progress on MDSF too. (And 2SF...) I guess UF will finally get around to finishing it after he gets done with his NotSoFatso project.
--EDIT--
NEZPlug v0.9.4.8 +2 +14.1 released. Must be a small fix.

- this guy releases too many versions of his software, can't he just release all the fixes and stuff all at once?
that being said, i'll be releasing a notsofatso version soon. foobar2000 support is pretty much off the books, because foobar2000 sucks and i hate it. it'll include no major changes, just small fixes in emu2413.

- Release early, release often.
- by marioman at 12:17 PM EDT on October 23, 2007
- Couldn't you have just released those emu2413 fixes in your original release?
At least when Offgao releases a new version he actually fixes a major bug or adds a feature. I could ask the same question about any other software manufacturer.
Why wasn't Mac OSX Apple's first operating system? Couldn't they just have included all of their OSX upgrades in their original OS? Why didn't Bill Gates originally release Windows instead of fooling with DOS? Why couldn't Nintendo have released the Wii in the 1980s and just skipped the NES, SNES, N64, GC, etc?
Software is a continual process of perfecting what you already have. It is similar to sculpture - the project must be started somewhere and then honed into a masterpiece.
OK, enough rant.

- Yeah, I put in the wrong value for bank number in the Little Nicky GBR. Doesn't really matter much, though, since that was just a preliminary, unoptimized rip. Here's an updated one with unused banks removed:
http://snesmusic.org/hoot/kingshriek/LittleNicky.7z (haven't yet gotten to updating the page to reflect this)
@anewuser: I'm using GBR for this particular rip because the game's sound engine uses both vsync and timer interrupts simultaneously. GBS only allows use of one or the other.

- I just finished Stealth ATF in five hours YES!

- The notsofatso project is suspended until further notice. Please use NEZplug++ for now, as I have issues to fix with the builds before any release is made.
- by marioman at 7:55 PM EDT on October 25, 2007
- Does this mean that 2SF or MDSF will now get some attention?
--EDIT--
In other news, NEZPlug++ v0.9.4.8 + 2 + 15 has been released. It has issues with some GBS files though.
