Any luck on Sonic Rush Adventure set bxaimc? Haven't heard anything about it in a week or so, and I am just wondering how it is progressing.
by bxaimc at 12:58 PM EDT on September 30, 2008
Still ripping it, coming along good. Im also doing other ripping so im multitasking :)
by Elven Spellmaker at 5:44 PM EDT on September 30, 2008
Has anyone looked at Pokémon Diamond recently? (I would if I could =/)

Or is the header not going to be decoded?

Its one of my most wanted game soundtracks now, as I have most of the others I want. =)
by Connie at 5:49 PM EDT on September 30, 2008
For anyone that is interested, I've created a torrent for the majority of available 2SF sets.

Grab the torrent here http://tinyurl.com/3l9zkz

...and please help to share. :)

Enjoy.
desmume sucks by unknownfile at 6:44 PM EDT on September 30, 2008
OK guys, I've come to something of a conclusion:

1) Desmume sucks
2) There are no other open-source emulators that suck more than Desmume, but it still sucks
3) Reinventing the wheel is required

So, I'm sort of wondering where this is going to go from here. Suffice to say that at the moment I have no particular interest in using Desmume anymore, and that I'm going to need to find a better codebase or write one myself.

This whole thing is a mess...
by marioman at 10:13 AM EDT on October 1, 2008
I am sure that you will figure out how to get everything fixed up UF. Maybe you could get in touch with the author of a good closed-source emulator, and see if they can help you out? Good luck on getting this thing straightened out.
by SquareTex at 12:26 AM EDT on October 8, 2008
After discovering that Drone Tactics features music from my man Sakuraba, I've decided to see if I can try and do a ripkit project myself.

...unless someone's already attempted it and went bust, in which case I'd hope you'll stop me now. :)

Nice work.. Yeah I know work , school etc.. get in the way of ripping stuff :) Can understand.. Also women get in the way too ^_^ They don't exactly like the idea of us listening to such music.. he he he
Silly women-folk. by Electric Keet at 12:43 PM EDT on October 9, 2008
Fortunately, marcusssssss, some of us women-folk not only like the idea, but actively contribute to it.

Oh, snap.

As a note, Kirby: Canvas Curse tagging is done, I'm just polishing things. Should have taken about four days less time, but I've been too busy with being barefoot and in the kitchen. *grin*

Kirby: Canvas Curse, tagged for your pleasure by Electric Keet at 6:28 PM EDT on October 9, 2008
Kirby: Canvas Curse tags fresh from the oven. What'd you think I was doing in the kitchen, after all?

to Blitz Lunar: A few of your tags didn't catch what I read in the sound test, so I pretty much ended up going through and re-doing them all anyhow.

trivia: This got me tempted to do a massive chart of how Kirby tracks have evolved through each game in the series with samples of each, but then I realised that 1) I'd have to follow up with Castlevania, and 2) I actually have a life.

special for unknownfile: I KISS YOU!
by bxaimc at 7:13 PM EDT on October 9, 2008
ok, thnx for the tags :)
by Lunar at 6:36 AM EDT on October 10, 2008
My tracknames were based off an mp3 rip :P i haven't played the game.

xx - Coliseum Duel (KNiD) (unused).mini2sf -- this isn't from Nightmare in Dreamland. it's using the soundset from Canvas Curse, so if it's an unused tune from any game it'd be from that.

also, be careful with your times -- 77 - Fanfare ~Short~ (KNiD).mini2sf -- this fades out prematurely, as i presume the other fanfares do (or maybe anything that doesn't loop). i have had this problem myself numerous times. just make them a second longer.

might also be a better idea to remove the (KNiD) tags from the titles, and put it in the game name.

but! other than that, it's good to finally see it tagged - cheers.

Yea, if the track doesn't loop, I add both one second to the duration and make an additional one second fade.
Pokémon Diamond by Elven Spellmaker at 12:16 PM EDT on October 10, 2008
I am assuming that people are not even going to attempt Pokémon Diamond as people just ignore my posts...

Does someone have a link to the Mp3 soundtrack if no one wants to attempt a 2SF version of it?

If someone is going to attempt it then brilliant! =D

(From what I understand it has a custom header =/)
by bxaimc at 12:47 PM EDT on October 10, 2008
and a custom driver
by Elven Spellmaker at 12:54 PM EDT on October 10, 2008
Ahh and does the current 2SF format only use Yoshi Island DS's driver?

So I guess from what you are saying is that you are not going to attempt it (If it even can be attempted)...

Is that the only D.S. game like that?
by Omochao at 1:57 PM EDT on October 10, 2008
You sure that Di/Pe/Pl use a custom driver? VGMtrans plays the music just fine.
by Elven Spellmaker at 2:23 PM EDT on October 10, 2008
@Omochao: What version of VGMTrans do you have?

They do indeed work in VGMTrans! =D

My version says copyright 2002, I wondered if there was a newer version?

They work as I said but of course I want the latest version of it... But 2002 might be the latest version...

Hmm, does that mean it doesn't use a custom header, or is this program just good?

Wow! Not this is a great program! I always wanted to rip my own 2sf....but i couldnt compile the source code...kept saying "Could not include the file windows.h" But this is great! Thanks, whoever made it....
by bxaimc at 1:20 PM EDT on October 12, 2008
if you're talking about:

DeSmuME_trace.exe "modcrap.nds" --trace_bottom=0 --trace_top=40

hcs made this change so that we wouldn't need to recompile Desmume for every 2sf set that needed to be ripped
One Problem.... by Ice_Pegasus at 2:09 PM EDT on October 12, 2008
Just 1 problem...im following instructions from the Generic_driver ripkit...i follow the instructions exactly (just dont use the compiling) and i use the command line....im trying to Rip Megaman Star Force 2 for fun, but after i rip it and got the clean.nds and the 2sflib, i try to make mini2sf files....when they are made, i load them into winamp, but its blank? It gives a time of 2:00, but nothing plays.....
by snakemeat at 2:13 PM EDT on October 12, 2008
Hmm, you may need to use psfpoint to update the "_lib" tags in your .mini2sfs:

psfpoint -_lib="foo.2sflib" *.mini2sf

Of course replace foo.2sflib with your 2sflib file name.
RE: One Problem.... by Ice_Pegasus at 2:21 PM EDT on October 12, 2008
I know im a noob at this....but what exactly is psfpoint?
by snakemeat at 2:44 PM EDT on October 12, 2008

it changes the tag info for xSF files.
by Omochao at 9:36 PM EDT on October 12, 2008

I'll try ripping it and see if it happens to me
by snakemeat at 10:18 PM EDT on October 12, 2008
Here's a little something to help all the rippers out. It's an auto timer for mini2sfs. It relies upon the naming scheme used by the current ripkit, so use this before renaming .mini2sf files.

Source is included for those interested. It uses winmm.dll to get the midi times of converted SSEQs corresponding to the .mini2sf files, so you'll need that (I'm pretty sure it's standard with Windows, but who knows?). The midi files are generated using sseq2mid.exe and set to loop twice (for looping songs only), and once for nonlooping songs (of course).

This tool will also not add fade tags. Although "sseq2mid" handles loops, my code doesn't.

Thanks to the authors of the original tools that make most of the work easier: loveemu, Neill Corlett, and DJ Bouche.

Grab it here.

strange.......I thought Wario Ware: Touched! crashed "sdattool.exe" iirc. but I could be wrong seeing as how Omochao has somehow successfully ripped it
by Knurek at 1:46 PM EDT on October 14, 2008
@bxaimc: You can still rip the game, only thing you won't know is the start/stop track number.
Which are of course needed for the optimization, something I highly doubt Omochao did (seeing that Wario game had 3000+ songs and DeSmuME_trace tends to crash fairly often after 100+ songs)...

One more thing: I was wondering how to increase the play time of a .STRM

edited 10:44 PM EDT October 15, 2008
by Mouser X at 11:06 PM EDT on October 15, 2008
A STRM file is streamed, and is therefore played using VGMstream. In other words, you can't change the file tags (as there are no tags to be changed) as you would on a xSF file. To get a STRM file to play longer than the default, change VGMstream's settings (if you're using a very old version of VGMstream, then update. Some of the earliest versions had no configuration). VGMstream defaults to 2 loops. Open up its settings window (from Winamp's "input plugins" screen), and change the loop counter. It's all pretty self-explanatory. Hope that helps. Mouser X over and out.
by Lunar at 7:01 AM EDT on October 16, 2008
Short, non-patronising version: you can change the # of loops in in_vgmstream's configuration.

by snakemeat at 11:02 AM EDT on October 18, 2008
I've updated my 2sf autotimer.

It will now detect whether a song loops or not by parsing the sseq2mid.exe output. It will add a fade of 1 second for non looping tracks and 10 for looping.

It also outputs the sseq2mid output, the smap, and a psfpoint batch file into a folder called "text" inside the folder your mini2sfs are in.

Grab it here.

More to come...

I just couldn't resist.

Why in the world do you restrict downloading sets on the "Manly" site just because the games were released recently? That doesn't make any sense at all. Making people wait doesn't make downloading any more legal.

And the policy is far from Manly. :P

Seriously though, thanks for the site and all the work... even if that doesn't make sense.

Actually, the limit is put in place for games that have an OST release, or a pending OST release. The date that they'll be available on Knurek's site is 6 months (or so) after the OST has been released. You're right that it doesn't change the legal situation (he never said it did mind you), but the idea is to provide more motivation to people to actually purchase the OST, rather than relying soley on the emulated audio. Hope that clarifies it somewhat. Mouser X over and out.

No need for sarcasm. If you're hosting copyrighted data, either host all of it or none of it. Law of Excluded Middle. There's no grey area. Technically it's legal or illegal. Excluding soundtracks until their official CDs release is a wasted effort.

Apologies for the length of the following treatise, but I'm trying to clearly explain my position rather than make a little joke.

Obviously if you are only concerned with copyright then yes, it is covered equally any time within the obscenely long copyright period. But copyright law is not (yet, at least) something enforced automatically; some action on the part of the copyright holder is required. And that action is more likely to come if the copyright holder feels threatened by the violation. Which is more likely to happen in the time frame immediately following (and preceding!) the release of the OST, as the vast majority of sales are within a few weeks of release of most entertainment products.

Now, I don't think that Knurek is necessarily worried about being served with a takedown notice, nor am I as the host. But what remains is the competition posed by the 2sf set vs the OST release. While we like to spread the good news of music, we don't want to do harm by doing so. People are impatient (which I don't think requires any argument), and without the 2sf option for several months some may choose the OST. Some may not, and may choose to rip the 2sfs themselves or get them from another source, but we don't have to support that. Importantly, we don't have to do anything at all.

I try to avoid the "take what you can get because we don't owe you anything" argument because it feels too confrontational, and I'm trying to explain, not confront. Consider that ripping and sharing this music has its costs and benefits, like anything else.
The costs include the time involved in ripping and maintaining the site, the legal risk, and moral concerns involved with copying creative works.
The benefits include some prestige, and sharing fun stuff with others.

The vast majority of people (myself included) consider the costs too great. We are fortunate that Knurek has considered it worth his time to rip hundreds of games and make them available to us. However, for some games, the cost of the potential offense to the makers outweighs any benefits he perceives. The fact that he even considers this cost, which is a fairly non-obvious cost, indicates that he has given considerable thought to the situation. You're probably not going to argue him out of it. The fact that he cited the duration of copyright like he did should indicate to you that it is not the overriding concern.

So, as a supporter of Knurek's work, I also support his decision on how to manage 2sf Central. If it is wasted effort it is certainly his to waste.
by SmartOne at 9:09 PM EDT on October 23, 2008
Hcs, thank you for that lengthy and sincere analysis. :) I rest my case.

I was reading an interview with Chibi-tech (here), and I saw this line:

It's definitely in contrast to how American/European developers traditionally throw in existing licensed songs and call it hard work, or hiring famous film composers who flaunt their mega-bux gigastudio symphony racks as a lure to spit out uninspiring tripe into a loose hodgepodge (lol sonic chronicles lol).

This was in reference to the method used by Japanese developers in regards to music. While I agree that the music to Sonic Chronicles is... simple... I would also say that, although it could be better (hopefully the sequal will be (if there's a sequal)), it's not too bad. It fits the game reasonably well. I do think Richard Jacques wrote the streamed songs (battle music mostly/entirely), but I doubt (or should I say "I hope he didn't") he wrote the sequenced stuff. If I were to rate the music (the sequences), I'd say it was above average (in this scale, starting at average, there's "average," "above average," "good," "really good," and "Wow!" Something that I'd list under "really good/Wow" might be... something from Deep Labyrinth? Yasunori Mitsuda did a really good job with limited resources. I'm sure there's better examples, but I can't think of very many right now).

Something interesting I found when trying to find the correct spelling of Richard Jacques' name was this. Apparently, the music to Sonic Chronicles is using stuff from Gameboy hardware (that's how I read it), which might partially explain why it sounds... odd... sometimes. On a similar note, I decided to look up the review on Metacritic. It has a 74 out of 100 average. I disagree. Any game that can keep me up past 5 am multiple times in four days is definitely better than a 74. And this is keeping in mind that I have to get up at 6:30 am to go to some of my college classes.

As for the music though, I will agree with most people that it's disappointing. Not because it's bad (though, I suspect that many people think it is), but because of the wasted potential it had. It's okay. Hopefully it will be better if a sequel comes out (if a sequel does come out, I will almost certainly buy it without thinking twice).

[EDIT] Ah man!!! I just found some of these links. While the music in the game is okay, some of this stuff would have been *!WAY!* better!!! (linked in order that the 2SF set has them in (first 4 songs). Though, I don't recall if the Chao Garden has its own song in the game.)

Green Hill Zone
Central City
Mystic Ruins
Blue Ridge Zone
Chao Garden

Worth a mention - From some trailer

Apparently, all of those songs are pulled from some trailer for the game somewhere. I have no idea of their validity (as in, whether they were part of the game's development process at all, ever), so perhaps those songs were never meant to be part of the game anyway. Or, perhaps they weren't used because the game's data would have taken up too much space on the NDS cart, and they were therefore cut out, resulting in the music the game has now.

In regards to that, I thought this was interesting. This (Green Hill Zone) is the music in the game. Looking at the date, it was posted before the one I linked above. Perhaps these were "placeholder" tracks with the intention of replacing them with better music. But as development went further, they realized they wouldn't be able to include the "replacements," so they kept the "placeholders" instead. Personally, I'm somewhat doubting this, because the difference in the dates (and the release of the game) are such that I would have expected them to have relized the spatial concerns long before those post dates. I don't know either way, but it is still disappointing... Mouser X over and out.

2sfTimer r5 released. Same updates as r4 and a small bug fix.

Also, since SDAT tool only extracts an sseq file once (based on the id column in the smap), some files end up in the "Unused or Empty" folder, be sure to check that these files are really empty. If they are not, find the matching file id for another sseq file in the smap and use that timing info. I'll see if I can add this logic to the timer soon, but it's something I've encountered that could lead to missing tunes if you are not careful.

Anyhow, enjoy. Grab it here.

Music from Order of Ecclesia rocks so yeah look forward to that 2sf release. Can understand while its not released as there is an OST out, but ost is far better of course since it contains the arranged music also :) Look forward to the 2sf release tho ^_^
by holyice7 at 2:58 AM EDT on October 29, 2008
Oh feh, not only is the Order of Ecclesia OST a Japanese only preorder, it's missing one of my favorite tracks. Cantus Motetten -2, for those in the know.

I should know; I just spent the last hour re-naming the ripped tracks to rid the files of their poorly-Romanized Japanophelia.

I have to give it credit for what it's worth, though; the looped tracks all have a proper 10 second fade. They're not all quite exact, but it's enough to be considered uniform, which tickles me just right. Mmmmm....

Yeah the ost sounds great :)(if only a lossless version was available, its good some of the great or cool songs loop twice. Sometimes they have a habit of only playing a song once through before it fades... So that was good ..but yeah like PoR they should of had 1 cd for game audio and the other for arranged .. awww still the arranged tracks , tho only a handful, do sound great :-)

I'm in Oz and yeah game won't be released to sometime rediculous like Jan 09.. Have to just import it I guess .. can kiss the chances of getting that cd too unless we import it. stupid stupid stupid ! All us PAL users get screwed as usual.. Lucky the ds isn't region locked Thank F***ing christ :D

Not sure if anyone else noticed, but with the last update we've broken the 500 sets barrier.

Here's to all the guys who helped with this and to another 500 sets.
by Lunar at 10:07 AM EDT on October 29, 2008
i want to see the sets ripped by knurek:sets not ripped by knurek ratio. i think it's you who we should be thanking :P

Yeah its a good barrier to break :) Great stuff with all those releases :D

I'm using in_vio2sfu.dll 0.14 and it seems some Ys tracks don't work... Is this the best player?

Specifically:
ys-0000
ys-0007
ys-000a
ys-000e

I'm having similar problems with some Ys II songs. :(

As the missing.txt file in both set states, the songs won't play until someone hack the original game driver (the songs you've listed use more than 500 kB of samples which unfortunately breaks the Yoshi's Island driver).

"No longer working on 2sf, all further DS music development stuff will go into SUPER MEGA SOUND EMULATOR 2000,"

wait what? is this a real thing that's happening?
by Dais! at 1:33 PM EDT on October 30, 2008
Oh, right, and one more thing, to illustrate my lack of knowledge about something I should know inside-out by now:

A 2sf (and PSF and GSF and such) file is just a sort of link/pointer/whatever to the actual sequence file inside of the *.*sflib, right? And that "library" (right?) also holds the sound samples the sequences use, correct?

Assuming I'm correct here, shouldn't it be possible - or rather, is it possible - to disassemble the library and extract both the sequence data and the sound samples?

What I'm getting at is basically this: could you, theoretically, extract a sequence file, find a way of interpreting the data in it, and alter them in order to create a different song? And then recompile the sflib and have the song play like a normal 2sf, or even properly in the game itself?

I mean, if that is the case, I'm sure theres complications in terms of making the game/hardware not freak out over the fact that you've altered the data, checksums and all that business.

Along the same lines, would it be possible, assuming I haven't struck out yet, to replace a sound sample with another sound sample in the library file? (with the same problems as altering the sequence, of course)
by Knurek at 2:05 PM EDT on October 30, 2008
DAIS, that's exactly what we're doing with the generic driver 2SF rips.
Taking Yoshi's Island ROM and changing it's music files to those from different games.
As you can see it works pretty well in most of the cases.
by unknownfile at 4:03 PM EDT on October 30, 2008
Yes Dias, it's real because I feel 2sf is an incomprehensible mess. In addition, the Desmume environment sucks for ripping and is likely the reason why I'm asked to do every custom driver rip, so having a better emulation environment would work a bit better.

Dangit, dangit, dangit...

Well, I gave Drone Tactics the ol' college try, and FAILED. My computer simply does not want to use VGMTrans or the ripkit...it absolutely REFUSES to do so.

Knurek, have you had the chance to look into that title for yourself, please? As much as I'd like to "give back to the community", Vista has other plans. <:\
by Knurek at 5:02 PM EST on November 11, 2008
NTR-AWCE-USA-000e.mini2sf <-- typical Sakuraba battle music...

In other words, Drone Tactics is ripped...

Meh, Shiren 2 DS uses Procyon Studio custom driver. :(

Can anyone tell me where to download VGM trans from?

Thanks
by Elven Spellmaker at 1:09 PM EST on November 13, 2008
Ice Pegasus I have a version of it, dunno if its the latest, but I have uploaded it on my MSN space. Link Below, hope you get some use out of it. =)

I use it to play Pokémon Diamond NDS file. (It plays despite the custom driver and header)

VGMTrans.rar

I have tried exporting the DLS files but Synthfont doesn't like them. The MIDI exports work well though.

Winamp seems to like the .DLS well enough.
by Ice_Pegasus at 5:50 AM EST on November 15, 2008
Thanks for the VGM trans! Yea if you play the DLS files through winamp....it sounds nearly exactly like a 2sf rip
by Knurek at 6:25 AM EST on November 15, 2008
Take note that VGMTrans doesn't support the PSG/chip channels (substitutes them for piano IIRC), so some songs will sound pretty weird.
by Elven Spellmaker at 11:09 AM EST on November 15, 2008
Knurek, I assume you mean drum channels etc? They play fine in VGMTrans, but as soon as a MIDI export is made it substitutes them for a Piano, so I just open them up in a MIDI editor (JAZZ++) and change the Drum Tracks back to drums. Or I can also use Synthfont...

But I have no idea why it doesn't like the DLSs...

Having said all of that, it seems to be hopeless, it just doesn't like using all the DLS sounds even in Winamp...

Argh... Its getting odd now, if I add the DLS to my soundcards input (Soundblaster Live 5.1), it comes out fineish... =/

by Ice_Pegasus at 5:36 AM EST on November 16, 2008
Elven, maybe it's your sound card? Or maybe your sound configuration? I downloaded Synthfont and used the DLS files in it and it still plays like winamp does....

Been working on a new SDAT extractor. This one works with all of the ones that break sdattool (at least according to tests so far).

For now it only extracts SEQ and STRM files. It generates an smap, but only contains the SEQ section. The SEQ section is missing HSIZE data.

It's obviously not complete, but it's enough to help rippers with games that crash the other tool. Grab it here.
A rip contribution? by Ice_Pegasus at 1:57 PM EST on November 16, 2008
I have a question... if i say rip a sf file, e.g like ryuusei no rockman 3 (Megaman Star Force 3) how do i contribute the rip so it goes to the 2sf archive?
by Mouser X at 2:06 PM EST on November 16, 2008
First off, Megaman Star Force 3 can't be ripped using the ripkit (it's a custom driver). That's why it wasn't included in this update. 2nd, if you do rip a set, upload it somewhere (Sendspace, Badongo, Stashbox, Zippyshare, or many others) and post a message on the forum, linking to the set you uploaded. Knuek will most likely upload the set to the Manly 2SF page.

Hope that helps. Mouser X over and out.
by Knurek at 3:29 PM EST on November 16, 2008
It's not a custom format. Just doesn't work with Yoshi's Island driver (most probably it does a buffer overrun with the sample space).

And as for set contributions, only thing you need to do is make the clean 2sf pack (so, fully optimized). Don't want to host a 20 MB file when it can be shoretend to 2 MB.

I can do all the other stuff, like timing and basic tagging, just provide the 2sfs and region from which the music was ripped.

by Mouser X at 7:44 PM EST on November 16, 2008
Ah dang. When I was told "It can't be ripped" I simply assumed it was a custom driver. Bah. Well, either way, it can't be ripped with the ripkit, which is what I figured you'd use. Mouser X over and out.
by Elven Spellmaker at 7:27 PM EST on November 17, 2008
I dunno Ice, but my soundcard takes it fine as a DLS, but synthfont plays everything octaves too high, menaing it sounds weird and obviously no meaningful precussion...
by Elven Spellmaker at 7:30 PM EST on November 17, 2008
Knurek, you seem to know a lot about this 2sf stuff, why if VGMTrans can play Pokémon Diamond's music, can it not be ripped to 2sf, does it not work with the Yoshi Driver or something?

How does VGMTrans do it if that is the case?
by nensondubois at 7:33 PM EST on November 17, 2008
