Pokemon Pearl is not supported by the Yoshi driver (same for Platinum), but if we could put the .SSEQs into a NEW .sdat, then it might work.
by bxaimc at 10:48 PM EST on November 17, 2008
I really doubt that'll work. Besides, how are you going to make an sdat?
by Dais! at 1:04 AM EST on November 18, 2008
Wow, the Ecclesia set is quite a ways off for a game whose soundtrack was only available as a limited edition bonus for the Japanese release.

What's the 'op.vx' file with Hoshigami? After a quick OST comparison, it's pretty likely to be the first track, "HOSHIGAMI Main Theme", but I haven't the slightest idea what format it's in.
by Dais! at 3:27 AM EST on November 18, 2008
Also, the Contact set is missing three sequences:

007d SEQ_BGM_LIASON
0040 SEQ_BGM_LABO_ZOOM
0065 SEQ_BGM_LIVE_GAYA

Now, 0065 is, appropriate to it's name, just the noise of a crowd, so I can see that being cut. However, I have no idea if the other two are SFX as well. Is there any way I can contact the person who made this set?
VGMTrans by Elven Spellmaker at 5:24 AM EST on November 18, 2008
Yeah I though so, still the question remains that people avoid, how does VGMTrans play them if the Yoshi Driver doesn't support them...?
by Knurek at 11:05 AM EST on November 18, 2008
DAIS, .vx files are ActImagine movies. Unplayable right now, I've included one in hopes that one of the VGMStream gurus manages to work something with it (like the Layton SADs for instance).

I'm pretty sure the two Contact tracks are also noise/sfx.

Also, please do not expect any more generic driver rips from me. Why?
Listen for yourself:

http://snesmusic.org/hoot/yoshi_driver.mp3
http://snesmusic.org/hoot/original_driver.mp3

That's the same track. First one from 2sf set, second wavewritten from original game played in Desmume
by snakemeat at 11:37 AM EST on November 18, 2008
Also, please do not expect any more generic driver rips from me. Why?
Listen for yourself:

Oh damn, that's quite a difference. Hadn't done that comparison before. Any way to predict which sets would sound this different?
by Dais! at 12:34 PM EST on November 18, 2008
*facepalm*

Ah, emulation. If it worked perfectly the first time, what fun would it be?

Maybe over Christmas I should practice hacking stuff - maybe even work on creating GSF sets for games I otherwise want to record.

Hah!

I haven't been paying close attention. Do any 2sf sets currently use a custom driver? If so, it'd be nice if they could be marked/moved to a separate part of the manly page, so people know that they don't need to be re-ripped.

Oh, and you say it's an ActImagine movie - do you mean it's the whole movie file, or just the audio stream from it?

Anyway, two more questions, not urgent:

1. What specific tools are used to set up/pull apart a 2sflib? I know it's not a simple process, but I'd like to see what one looks like when you take it apart.

2. unknownfile, would you mind saying a bit more about your 2sf alternative? I don't mean to beg for details, but I think you can see how it's growing more interesting by the day.
by unknownfile at 5:02 PM EST on November 18, 2008
No 2sfs, from my knowledge, are custom driver rips except for Super Princess Peach (and some streaming driver stuff). I would get around to doing more rips if only I had the interest and patience. If you want to rip 2SF sets you're going to need the generic driver ripkit, which contains the tools and stuff needed to make a set, generic driver or otherwise.

SMSE2K is something I'm working on in my spare time, and is nothing more than a small workbench for MAME and MESS driver code. I'm not going to commit to finishing it, and even if I do manage to release an alpha version it'll just have rather basic drivers for 1980's systems before it gets into anything complex.
by Knurek at 5:32 AM EST on November 19, 2008
@UF: Yoshi's Island rip isn't a generic one as well, obviously. :)

@Dais: Try snakemeat's VGMToolbox, it's the easiest way to use the ripkit (most of the time just one click required to rip the game).

@snakemeat: no way that I see, and it's not like it's obvious. Only one track from the rip behaves like that (well, didn't check all, but those that are easily playable in an emu do match the 2sf set more or less). I mean, it's not as bad as a whole (checked lotsa other sets vs the OSTs and there were no noticable faults), still tickles me the wrong way.

I'll of course add any outside contributions (looking forward to some even, like the Chrono Trigger DS set). Just that I prefer to spend the time I'd use on the generic ones to learn how to use the proper game driver. The early results are in and, well, they don't look great but I do still have hope I'll be able to do it (or die trying).
by Mouser X at 2:03 AM EST on November 20, 2008
Knurek: Good to hear that you're "getting started" on ripping 2SFs with their original driver. Too bad about the difficulty involved... I haven't checked #usf's logs, but if you haven't actually asked him for help, would it hurt to do so? I realize that his "tutorial" wasn't very useful, but perhaps if you were to both rip the same game (say, Yoshi's Island, or whatever is reasonably simple/has already been done), you'd be able to follow along with any instructions he may offer. The worst case scenario is that he tells you mean things and calls you a stupid-head (or similar). Though, since that's usually what's expected anyway, if that's what you get, then nothing lost, right?

Of course, the other issue is that he might actually be willing to help, but not have the time/motivation/etc. necessary to do so (or maybe he simply doesn't remember...). Anyway, I'm rooting for you, if that helps at all. It may take time, but I'm sure that, with help/determination, you can pull it off. I haven't messed with IDA in a very long time, so I can't remember very well how explanatory it may or may not be, but I suspect that what is likely to be the hardest part is being able to read the disassembly. With practice though, I would expect that, even if you can't read it very well, you'll at least recognize Generic Driver signatures when you see them.

Good luck, and I wish I could help. Mouser X over and out.
A Breakthrough? by Ice_Pegasus at 1:14 PM EST on November 20, 2008
Ok....well since i figured that games like megaman starforce 3 can't be ripped to 2sf....so i did some research..and of course found nothing. I did how ever find the source code for VGMtrans... Using that source code, i compiled my own rip kit that will actually rip the songs from custom driver games! Not to 2sf format though.....converts them to OGG, which yes can be looped like a 2sf. Now there is a small problem that im working on....It takes +- 1 hour to rip one song. Im trying to find out why though. As soon as it's fixed, i'll post a link to download!

Nice Job though :)
by Lunar at 4:41 AM EST on November 21, 2008
sweet, even the extras menu tracks are in there. :D wanted these in a sequenced format for ages, since that PSF rip never happened....

33MB though... large set is large!

which tracks are missing from omochao's set? it looks fairly complete to me. just needs tags in addition to those filenames.

edited 4:43 AM EST November 21, 2008
by Knurek at 10:34 AM EST on November 21, 2008
If the set is 33 MB large, it's not optimized at all. Just wait for a proper Manry one.
by Omochao at 8:37 PM EST on November 21, 2008
The things I seem to be missing are various ambients and a duplicate of Frog's Theme.
I do seem to have some timing issues though.
by Emperor ServingSpoon at 6:18 PM EST on November 23, 2008
I've just started playing through Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, so I'm tagging it as I go.
2sfTimer r7 by snakemeat at 7:16 PM EST on November 23, 2008
2sfTimer updated to r7.

Added a few internal fixes (zero second files and memory hogging). Modified to use an internal SDAT class for parsing SDATs. Hides timing and conversion console windows for psfpoint and sseq2mid programs.

Should work a lot better now that I have more control over the SDAT stuff. Grab it here.
by Lunar at 2:20 AM EST on November 25, 2008
Something I'd like to point out:

Yasunori Mitsuda Talks Chrono Trigger: Mysteries Solved, Clarifications Made

He talks about those four Chrono Trigger PSX Omake tunes. Apparently he did not compose them - Tsuyoshi Sekito did. So, when it comes to tagging the 2SF set, that'd be a good thing to remember :)

ciao!
by Omochao at 4:05 AM EST on November 25, 2008
Speaking of Chrono Trigger, here are the fixed times:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/9a5ze0
by bxaimc at 3:41 PM EST on November 25, 2008
*sigh* it's still not optimized...........

Mine's is around 10 MB and it'll be on the Manly Site when i'm done fixing some minor details.
by Omochao at 9:27 PM EST on November 25, 2008
It will be optimized once someone provides a working version of the ripkit. (The current version of Desmume_trace only makes a one track .2sflib. I have tried both opening it directly and using a command line.)
by bxaimc at 10:05 PM EST on November 25, 2008
umm, i think i have the same ripkit as you do, and to optimize, you would need to re-rip the set.
2sfTimer r8 by snakemeat at 6:07 PM EST on December 3, 2008
Made a small update to the timer to show the progress of timing in an [xxxx/yyyy] fashion. A lot more descriptive than the dots...

Grab it here and save yourself a load of time ;)
by Emperor ServingSpoon at 6:23 AM EST on December 4, 2008
I finished Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia the other day(done everything there is to do, I'm pretty sure), but there's still 6 tracks that I've not heard used in the game... I'll wait to see if they're used in any of the special Wi-Fi missions before I bother uploading it anywhere.
by Knurek at 11:15 AM EST on December 4, 2008
Another Manly Update.

As always: http://2sf.hcs64.com/new.html

~400 updated sets, nothing new this time.

Seriously, this isn't for most of the people, just major case of cleaning up.
Almost all sequenced sets renamed to the new 2sflib naming scheme, some fixes now that we have snakemeat's SDAT extractor (Elite Beat Agents, both Ouendans have proper filenames).

Proper update comming soon.
by unknownfile at 2:46 PM EST on December 4, 2008
I'm still getting hits on my 2sf directory. Now redirecting them...
by Knurek at 3:39 PM EST on December 4, 2008
Thanks, appreciated.
by marioman at 5:49 PM EST on December 4, 2008
Thanks for the update Knurek. I see that a lot of sets were updated, but I cannot determine what the changes are. Were most of the updates minor tweaks, or is there something bigger that I am overlooking?
by Knurek at 5:52 PM EST on December 4, 2008
Like I've said, lib name changes from the previous number formats (which does differ from database to database) to internal ROM serial (NTR-AOSE-USA, etc).

Pretty much unnecessary for people who aren't as anal as me. :)

by Dais! at 1:07 AM EST on December 5, 2008
as this page shows (and as I had on my system before I foolishly deleted it), there's actually a line-in recording of Double Team floating around on the internet (in addition to a few tracks on this album)

damn if I can find it, though. I'll keep an eye out for it.

I realize it's a custom sound driver game, but are there any theories out there as to how Luminous Arc stores it's audio? There's over 2000 >100k .SAD files, which I thought was a streaming format, and vgmstream (or specfically test.exe) doesn't seem to recognize them. Then there's the Snd(x).iear files...
by Knurek at 9:18 AM EST on December 6, 2008
Procyon Studio custom driver.

.SAD are for streams, sadly they use completely different format than the Professor Layton one currently supported in VGMStream.
But IIRC baring some songs, most of Luminous Arc/2 is sequenced.
.SMD and .SWD files (first has the sequence data, second samples). Funnily enough, this format was used in PS2 games (Shadow Hearts 1 for instance). Just that .SWD files were Sony ADPCM then and are IMA ADPCM in NDS case (some minor differences in sequences too, of course - different hardware, but you can still see it's basically the same thing).

What pisses me off is that more and more games use Procyon Studio driver on NDS. Usually those I'd really want to have ripped - Luminous Arc, Soma Bringer, World Destruction, Shiren 2...
by marioman at 1:17 PM EST on December 6, 2008

The EXE5 DS rip is available at (link removed).

EDIT: Never mind - sorry.

by Dais! at 3:06 PM EST on December 6, 2008
Either dumping the file system screwed up (a possiblity), or Luminous Arc doesn't have sequences in that format - other than the .sad files, there's a bunch of .iear files in the /data folder which I assume are some unique catchall for whatever engine they were using.

The SMD and SWD files are easy to find in LA2. Can the SWDs be pulled apart to get at individual samples? I doubt I'll find what I'm looking for there (a guy on gamingforce wants the level up jingle), but it's always nice to have another tool on hand.
by Knurek at 4:52 PM EST on December 6, 2008
Like I've said, IMA ADPCM. You can try making a GENH file with them, though you'll need to determine all needed settings (frequency, offset, etc) yourself.

And I didn't actually look at LA1 that closely, just recall seing lots of sequenced stuff in LA2. It's possible it's fully streamed.
by Omochao at 2:46 AM EST on December 8, 2008
MMBN5 seems to have the same issue as Pokemon D/P/Pl.

Like with Pokemon, the .sseqs are fully playable in VGMtrans.

Knurek, let me be the 378th to show appreciation for everything you do in the community, especially the 2SF stuff. You work your butt off with the site and it shows. I also have a folder on my hard drive (\NSF\Knurek\) specifically for your work organizing all the most recent versions of NSF files and renaming them nicely (though I can't remember where I found the original zip). You're a real asset to the community; I hope you realize just how much.

Seconded. He really does put in a herculean amount of time effort and dedication, and deserves every bit of appreciation for all the hard work he does. It's also refreshing to see someone who places the ends above the means when it comes to ripping soundtracks (seems to be the other way around for many.) I'm sure if he could do this with USF and other hard-to-rip formats, he would. Make his life easier, people! The results would be golden.

Also, Chrono Trigger 2sfs <3 nicely tagged too. Nice job, everyone involved.

I just wish there was a way to have the rips use the original driver (I mean, saptapper like way, not manually ripping each and every game).
Everytime something weird comes up in a song, I have to wonder if it's Desmume core fault, or ours... And of course there's the nonworking games, games that clearly don't sound right, etc... :(

There's also Suda51 game Flower, Sun and Rain, new J.B. Harold DS conversion, Mahjong Fight Club DS which has lovely oriental tunes, Monster Farm 2, which, surprisingly was done by Another Code/Hotel Dusk developer Cing, Mushishi - Ame Furusato with it's traditional Japanese ambient stuff and Summon Night 2, which hits my Flight Plan weak spot.

Lotsa good stuff in other words.

by q 3 at 9:43 PM EST on December 31, 2008
Yeah, Crossover is just Wine with extra features. I'm not sure why you are having difficulty, as I can get Winamp running reasonably well under OSX 10.4, with most vgm plugins running fine. Maybe try an older version? I know that for me, Winamp 2.x is significantly more stable than 5.x (and it still runs all modern plugins).

These are based on the in-game sound test. The last three tracks are labeled "(unused)" in the sound test, although I'm pretty sure I heard one of them during the game. Eh? Anyway, a decent soundtrack for a decent game. For those who are into retro remixes (that's everyone here, right?) tracks 13, 40, and 45 are each remixes of the main theme from the original NES (arcade?) game.

Great work :D

Knurek, do you know if all the DS games on this release are custom driver?
by Knurek at 6:22 AM EST on January 25, 2009
Nah, if it's Nintendo it should use their driver.

Some games listed there are done already (some with US names, like Yawaraka Atama Juku == Big Brain Academy), Brain Age 2 doesn't work with YI driver, haven't checked other games.

Ahh okay, thanks. ^o^/

260+ tracks for Tingle?

maybe I won't try tagging it after all...
by Knurek at 4:44 PM EST on January 25, 2009
Not much actual music there, most of those are fanfares/jingles.

And before anyone asks, Phantasy Star Zero uses a semi-dynamic music system, causing the insane number of tracks (800 most of which are 4 second sections of battle tracks) and yes, Moon is supposed to sound this way, checked vs real DS.

by unknownfile at 10:29 PM EST on January 25, 2009
no i don't, because people do not fly and the way you're stating is that there's a guy up my ass as i fly through the sky on my way to school
by Dais! at 3:09 AM EST on January 26, 2009
Yeah, I've played about halfway through Tingle (very strange game, but the perfect argument both for and against fixing the terrible money system in the Zeldas), and I'm aware of how few actual tunes it has. But each and every jingle is important! Except when I can't find where they're used, in which case fuck them.

(is there any information on why the unplayable tracks are unplayable?)

oh, right, Lost Magic. Here's the tagged mini2sf set and the usual text file:
http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/9/1/1401201/LostMagic%20%282006%29%28Taito%29.zip

There's one track "missing", the extended version of the title theme, but I checked vgmtrans and it doesn't seem to be in the game. No big loss. I'm probably overlooking something important, though. Kind of absentminded today.
by unknownfile at 9:11 AM EST on January 26, 2009
good times in tagging
___

The unplayable tracks are likely unplayable due to issues with the generic driver. Currently busy with other stuff though...

Streamed files require VGMStream, available here:

Ah, DAIS, thanks for the tags (as usual).
Pretty sure that missing track is just an OST special one.

sdatext and VGMToolbox fix by snakemeat at 9:06 PM EST on January 29, 2009
I've fixed the SDAT class to properly extract sequences and stream data that have empty values in the Symbol section. This is a new scenario where a Symbol section actually exists, there are just pointers to empty values. This effects both sdatext and VGMToolbox (which has had some other minor updates too).

Some nice updates to this latest version (see the release notes). Relevant to this thread is that the semi-auto ripper has been fixed. It was having some pathing issues. The 2sf Timer has also been fixed. There was an issue with improper incrementing messing up the progress bar. I've also added an SDAT Finder to allow you to search for SDATs in big archive type files or against an entire game image itself...

ENGLISH TRAINING ^o^ thank you Knurek! Shiba Daisuke seems a very promising composer, I hope to hear more soundtracks from him/her in future. VGMToolbox Updated by snakemeat at 12:04 AM EST on February 12, 2009
Updated VGMToolbox to release 226. Of relevance to this thread is the update to 2sfTimer allowing the selection of a single loop timer as requested by VGSB.

Other fun stuff includes an SSFMake Front End which still needs some improvements, but definitely works. If files are named properly, it can batch process your extracted files to speed up the building process. It can even use seqext.py and tonext.py to extract data from files. Just be sure they have the same filename (different extensions) or are in the same file. Thanks go to kingshriek for his excellent SSF tools.

See the release notes for more info.

So here's the Yoshi's Island DS set with full tags that I worked on with Matt J. It uses the 2 loop option of 2sf Timer. I included a script that lets you set the number of loops and fade length to something else if desired. Feel free to add the set to Manly.

Thanks snakemeat for adding the 1 loop functionality! I did the timing manually before I knew about 2sf timer, but now I'll be able to use it for all future conversions. I'll still have to add a fade delay to the lengths to do the S-curve style fadeouts (setting the fade used by vio2sf to 0 and using Sox for the fade instead), but I can get around that if you don't feel like adding a Fade Delay feature to 2sf timer. I'm looking forward to the day when somebody makes a timing tool for other non-stream Nintendo platforms!

I'm not exactly sure what you are requesting here or if I could add it. Any more info you could provide me would increase the chances of seeing it added.
by Knurek at 2:40 PM EST on February 16, 2009
Pretty sure it's just a manual value that get's added to the duration.
So that he can wavewrite the files and add better fadeouts manually.
by VGSB at 1:20 AM EST on February 17, 2009
Yes, basically an offset to whatever the midi length spits out so that people can do manual fades for conversions. The Winamp options for vgmstream would be an example of how to do it well. Ideally there would also be an offset for non-fade tracks so that people could have a longer gap than 1 second in-between songs. I included that functionality in the .bat.

Knurek, I agreed at first that I could have had the tags in the script, then I thought about it. What if somebody edits some of the tags to something they like better, and just want to adjust the timing every once in awhile? I can't think a good reason why somebody would need to transfer the tags to another version of the same rip. If they liked the tags, they could just use the included 2sfs. Otherwise they could use their own 2sfs and just use the timing functionality of the script.

I'll keep your suggestion in mind anyway for future albums (but out of curiosity, could you please explain why you want it?). I've been planning on having tags in CSV format, that way they can be used by a wide variety of programs for importing. Future versions of that script would offer an option to import from the file.

Though I'm torn between 1 of 2 options for the CSV:
1. Omit commas from titles (though keep including them in the actual tags) and use "Artist1 / Artist2 / etc." instead of the comma as the separator for multiple artists. This would be standard CSV. Of course there's the option of escape syntax, but that would break quite a few pre-existing programs and would make parsing more complicated for programmers. Even apps with regex such as mp3Tag don't support escape functionality when importing from text files.
2. Use the less standard CSV format with semi-colon as the delimiter. This goes against the name of the format, but would be compatible with programs such as Mp3tag. Though it wouldn't be imported correctly into a spreadsheet when a casual user with Office installed opens it.

Any opinions?

I was thinking more of an update process. If you have the pack that's on manly, just download a batch file, run it and you have a fully tagged set without the need for redownloading the 2sflib once again. I know that it's 2009 and most people won't care about 10 MB download, but there's still some poor guys on dialup, and every MB counts there. :)

And as for CSV, I'm not sure how widely it's supported but "variable","variable, that has comman","other variable" seems to work fine with OpenOffice at least.
