Corrected Glover by holyice7 at 2:47 PM EST on November 25, 2007
I noticed the timing and fades for many of the Glover USFs were off, so I went ahead and fixed them. Would someone mind uploading the set?

http://holyice7.stalo.com/holyice7/Music/Glover/Glover_USF.zip

Of note is that several tracks had fades because it was assumed they looped, but instead have actual endings, and all the fades in general were set to odd numbers.

I remember hearing the fade rule was 10 seconds after the beginning of the third loop, unless the song ends on its own, so I went by that.

Banjo-Tooie Problem by holyice7 at 4:37 PM EST on November 27, 2007
I thought this little problem would be cleared up when Josh finished the set (since, as of the Prelim phase, it was limited to tracks that needed splitting), but it seems that when the all USF's in the Banjo-Tooie set play, the first 0.1 second is cut off.

I've included a visual example, since I thought at first that it may be a speed problem. It's not.

BT USF in wave form in Audacity.

The file on the bottom is a USF from the current set. The one on the top is from the preliminary set.

Blip Festival 2007 by hcs at 6:48 AM EST on November 30, 2007
For those not in the know, the Blip Festival is a massive chiptune show in New York City, now in its second year. I happen to be close enough to the glorious NYC to attend both years.

So today I report on Day 1!

Alex Mauer had some of the most tuneful and video game-like songs of the evening. He used a bunch of different game systems (software synthesizers, I assume, unless his keyboard had recordings from the hardware) and played percussion over it with a keyboard. His introduction of the series of songs from each system and his "I'm going to play some music" reminded me of Mark DeNardo from last year. (Ugh, did I just link to MySpace?)

Neil Voss has improved his act since last year's Blipfest. No more keyboard and laptops, he was up there with a Gameboy and an effects board. Much fun was had.

8GB isn't standing out in my memory...

Gijs Gieskes had a crazy electromechanical visualization apparatus, which apparently wasn't working when he first got up there. His music was very mechanical (even for chiptunes) at first, but it got more interesting as the set progressed and various parts of the incredible machine began working. Somewhere in the middle the power for the stage went out...

NrGiGa had technical problems as well, but the crowd kept cheering him on as he covered his face in shame at the failure of his gameboys. Good stuff when it was working.

Paza... had a mask, which contained a microphone and was used with a vocoder. He also came back on stage with a beer and no shirt after his set and played a few more.

Saskrotch I found generally too loud. This may just be because I was tired by this point. Whenever he had something good he ruined it with a blast of sound.

After Saskrotch's high power performance I was even tireder, but I still enjoyed Lo-bat from the corner where I was sitting. Virt informed me that Lo-bat had inspired him to take up LSDJ. Cool. He certainly was adept with it, and the audience coerced him into a few more songs.

The DVD from last year's Fest was for sale at the "mech table", and I quickly snatched one up. Very well done, and quite large (it takes up a full dual-layer DVD). I look forward to watching it in full soon. If anyone wants me to pick one up and send it to them ('cause I don't see it for sale anywhere online) I'd be glad to. Indications are that there is a full length documentary also in production, but it isn't scheduled to appear until 2008.

I recently purchased a Sansa e260, which has a built in microphone. I decided to try and record the show. Here's what I got (ogg, flac, and the unedited original recordings in case someone wants to clean them up), not too incredibly bad considering a) 22khz mono b) crappy built in microphone c) ridiculous volumes. I did the editing and encoding while waiting for the 4:20 AM train (I missed the late train), and I'm typing this is a school computer lab while waiting for the campus buses to start running (so I can get back to my dorm).
So that I can get some sleep and then attend tomorrow night!

[edit]
I took a lot of pictures, but I don't feel like sorting through them and I'd rather not just dump them all online unmanaged.

Anyone have a link to a player or Winamp plug-in?
Corrected Jet Force Gemini by holyice7 at 6:44 PM EST on December 5, 2007
I had a good long session with this rip, and re-timed everything to two loops, and found proper loops for everything except one track.

Track 43 on my re-number, Spacestation, seemed odd the first few times I was unable to locate a loop by ear.

The thing is, the Spacestation track doesn't seem to loop...I don't want to say ever, but after analyzing over 60 minutes of the track's waveform (I.E., converting it to a WAV and viewing it in Audacity), I couldn't find any suitable repeat.

Perhaps I couldn't hear it, perhaps I couldn't see it, but it seems the track stays unique beyond 60 minutes. I couldn't justify its classification as ambiance, so I just timed it to 5 minutes even. Long enough, in my opinion.

If anyone else wants to give it a shot, be my guest. Other than that, I'm done with this one.

Playstation demo disc songs rippable? by nensondubois at 7:15 PM EST on December 5, 2007
I wounder if the music in the 12 box demos game select song music can be ripped into PSFs? Interactive Demo disc is an example of this and the playstation underground demo series, jampack and also the ones that came in promo in magazines the ones have good music. Here is a video to simplify it

Anybody know how to extract the sound files in it, or just a music player for that type of file?
Diddy Kong Racing by Poobah1 at 5:38 AM EST on December 10, 2007
Just in case you guys have forgotten (or are unaware), the Player Select track from the Diddy Kong Racing USF set still needs to be split up into a one-track-per-game-character format since it's one of those tracks that uses multiple sets of instruments and effects and things, like in the Banjo games.

Thanks. :)

EDIT: Also, the track, "island" also needs to be split up.

Gamecube music files in an ISO? by Dude at 11:13 AM EST on December 17, 2007
ok this may sound stupid but...

I recently bought Nintendo Puzzle Collection for the Gamecube and loved the music in the Panel de Pon game. I downloaded the GCM and was wondering if it was possible to extract mp3s or something from it. There are 2 files I am wondering if it contains the music data. One is a .szp file and the other is a .samp file. Has anyone heard of either of these file extensions?

Ripping samples from Mystical Ninja 64 by Lunar at 3:19 PM EST on December 27, 2007
I'm trying to use SRip to rip out all the sound samples from Mystical Ninja 64, but I'm having some trouble. I've got as far as this:

Ripping from .ctl offset 0x086B10, .tbl offset 0x0973C0
Ripping Bank File
Ripping 1/79 instruments (SR: 44100, Original: 44100)
Illegal predictor number 14. I 0 S 0 WBase 0973C0(000000) = 0973C0

What that tells me is that there's 78 instruments not being ripped for some reason - possibly related to the error message at the bottom (I don't know what it means.) Basically, all it has managed to rip is one (rather ambiguous 'click') sample.

Any idea how I could fix this? I figure I could spend all evening messing with this and get nowhere, when someone here probably has the intuition to work it out within five minutes.

Thanks.

now, I've read a lot about playing music from gamecube games using the in_cube plug in, but is there a site that has either extracted just what's necessary to hear them, or do I have to download the actual gamecube iso's themselves to be able to listen to the game music within the iso?

goodnames by radornkeldam at 9:50 AM EST on January 12, 2008
Hi.

I'm not a very active user as you can see, mainly because I can't find much in which I can contribute, even if I want to. Anyway, there's something I'd like to suggest.

But first, thank you hcs and everyone else, rippers, taggers and whatnot for making this. I enjoy this stuff a lot!

Now, I'm a very concerned and exhaustive person about almost everything, and if there's something that makes me really uneasy is uncertainty. There's one little thing I'd like to ask of you rippers for documenting your rips. It's as simple as adding a line to the "readme" files with information about the rom used, like "GoodN64 <version number here> recognized the rom used as <goodname here>".
It can be GoodTools or whatever other rom auditing tool, but the important bits are the name of the tool, the version of the tool and/or it's database (if they are not tied toghether) and, of course, the identifier.

The reason for this is that, in some cases, even music can vary among regions and revisions of the same game, and just refering it by the title can be ambiguous. This poses a problem of uneasiness of mind for some (me at least), but of course I understand yo can't really require a ripper to take care of every rom needed to be "COMPLETE" when you find games that show these variances between releases. This solution gives users a more precise knowledge of what they have in their hands, opens the possibility of someone deciding to take care of the "missing" stuff, and it doesn't charges rippers with extra work (only a little scan will do)

I live in Spain, which is PAL zone, and, for example, some songs in the USF rip for Wave Race 64 have different arrangements than the local release (they sound different either on hardware or emulated). I personally like the local version more, but I can't really demand for it to be ripped just because of that, but I'd feel better with a better documentation with that extra bit of information, also gives a clear explanation to the "why the hell does this sound different to my game?" when sound emulation is out of the question, and helps you complete the soundtrack by other means (like emulating the game and dumping the sound direcly or recording from hardware) until someone or oneself is able/determined to rip the missing stuff.

For already existing sets, whenever the author is not up to the job of repacking the release, a simple public list would do.

I tend to write in excess... hope you don't mind.
I also hope people like the idea and adopt it.

Hi, I happen to have all audio files from smg most of them play fine with the in_cube winamp plugin but some others sadly don't.
The audio files are using AST.
Here is a file list

all those files with 'multi' don't work.
So I wonder if the author of in_cube would want to add support for that type of AST too.
Just reply and we'll figure out a way to get such an unsupported file to you.

in_cube 0.24 released by hcs at 9:50 AM EST on January 18, 2008
From the extensive hist.txt:
- fixed NPSF loop points & samples calculation
- AST codec detection added (no need to rename TP .ast file to .afc anymore)
- Mono HPSs (Killer7 FBITape*) now handled properly
- encrypted ADXs now no longer attempt to play as DSPs
- fixed HPS loop timing (would play too long)
- fixed overflow issues with huge ADXs
- minor adjustment to ADX decoder

- incorporates a huge amount of new format support by fastelbja :

A total of 29 new formats supported :
- Add other PS2 ADPCM variants support (CCC, FSB, FAG, MIB, MUSC, PSH, RWS, RXWS, SVAG, VPK, VS, VAG with Dual Channels,I80,INT,RSTM,ASS,KECS,PSW,RSD6,RKV)
- Add PSX CD-XA support (no direct CD support, the file must be copied to hdd, and have the RIFF & CDXA header informations).
Actually, only the first channel found in the file is played, and the length calc could be wrong.
- Add XBOX ADPCM (WAV support - Must be renamed to xwav) + others variants (WAVM, which is headerless, XMU, FSB & XMS)
- Add EA/XA support (Electronic Arts Sound Format).
- Add RAW ADPCM (RAW (headerless) & RAWX (with header)).

- Wii formats (idsp, fsb, (b)rstm, (b)rwsd) added

Check it out!

Unreal Champioship sound quality by Blue Ion at 6:12 AM EST on January 26, 2008
Some songs suffer (more intense) from some type of clipping or noise, specially with MUSIC_13.wav where I have the UT2003 and 2004 version called Level6.ogg, sounding at 44 khz , with slightly higher pitch and clean.
Additionally, the plugin detects the file as WAVM, yet if I rename it to wavm all I hear is garbage.
I have renamed it to xwav as it is a plugin format and somewhat related to the xbox (I can't use wav alone because xmplay tries to decode it itself and fails).

I just want to make sure whether what I hear is due to the adpcm compression or due to the decoder.

By the way, I'm using your rip from the game.

vgmstream by hcs at 6:57 PM EST on February 5, 2008
I've been talking about doing a rewrite of in_cube for a long time, I'm finally getting around to it now. The decoding library itself is called vgmstream, I have a SourceForge.net project set up for it. I'm adding newer formats at the moment but I expect to eventually get all of in_cube stuff in there.

I'm keeping the code in SourceForge's subversion repository, so those interested can take a look at the code as it develops.

Question:
Would anyone be interested in builds of the command line decoder that I'm using to test? It'll be a while before I get this into a Winamp plugin or anything like that. vgmstream has accurate .brstm looping which in_cube isn't going to have (I'd have to rewrite it and that's sort of the point of vgmstream). It wouldn't be too hard to put up some mingw32 builds when I update.
Defender (IDSP) by MarkGrass at 8:39 PM EST on February 7, 2008
I made a little extractor for Defender (GCN) that extracts only the IDSP audio files. You can find it here:

http://markgrass.the-horror.com/Release/DIDSPex.rar

The format isn't supported, it seems, so I gave the extracted audio the extension "DIDSP". If someone wants to take a look at the format (since I can't seem to compile in_cube), here are a few extracted examples:

http://markgrass.the-horror.com/Release/DIDSP_Audio.rar

Oh, and feel free to mirror the IDSP extractor on hcs64.com. It won't work on any game other than Defender, however. If there is a need for a real IDSP extractor, i'll write one.
MegaMan Anniversary (PS2) by MarkGrass at 11:24 PM EST on February 7, 2008
This app will extract AUS audio from the PS2 version of MegaMan Anniversary Collection. I wouldn't have even bothered, but IIRC the PS2 version has music that the GCN version doesn't.

http://markgrass.the-horror.com/Release/Aussie.rar

AUS audio seems to be a commonly used PS2 audio stream-type with a (seemingly) simple header.

Interesting phenomenon in a Mario Kart 64 USF by rubidinger at 10:51 PM EST on February 12, 2008
I had track 16 - Winning Results on infinite loop for awhile when I noticed something strange--the melody switched. This didn't seem to make any sense to me because it had been playing for at least thirty minutes, and a friend of mine assured me that the cause of my hearing it was personal insanity. This wasn't enough for me, so I bumped up the track time to 150 minutes and started seeking around for the switch. Sure enough, around 111 minutes in, a distinct change in the melody took place. It repeated for one or two loops, then went back to the usual melody.

Has anyone else noticed this? I can't understand why a simple 1.5-minute song would suddenly change its melody after almost two hours of looping. Is it some kind of obscure error? Is it even possible to idle on the results screen long enough to hear this? Do other MK64 tracks do this?

Edit: I opened the track on infinite loop again earlier and heard the melody switch around 54-55 minutes in, so the one near 111 minutes isn't the first.

UF\'s big list of stupid projects by unknownfile at 10:08 AM EST on March 3, 2008
So I can keep it all to one thread without it spilling all over the place, and also to give myself some sort of importance when there is nothing that I'm important for.

2sf - this is pretty much complete, but I'd like to phase out some crap relating to savestates
mdsf - still working on a port of Gens to Winamp
jaudio - the gamecube debuggers are crap and I'm not too interested in it at the moment
notsofatso - I'd like to get the Battletoads NSF working but the Nintendulator code (which, to my knowledge, is the only player that can get it working) is too cryptic in order to tell how the IRQs work. also the VRC7 tones don't really matter
other projects - busy with quite a bit of work so I can't really do much

Mercury Meltdown Remix missing songs by AENIGMA at 3:02 PM EST on March 6, 2008
HCS, thanks for making Mercury Meltdown Remix [PS2] available in the Bonus section. Do you happen to have the full "non-stripped" music file? Some of the songs are missing from the rip. If you listen to the file MUSIC_00ced840.MIB (interleave 7900) (Brazil), at the very end it plays the song Brood for less than 1 second, but Brood isn't included in the zip.

-edit-
Here are a couple more:
- MUSIC_05bf4040.MIB (interleave 7D00) (I don't know the song name) plays Invention at the very end but is not included in zip.
- MUSIC_0a6a4840.MIB (interleave 7900) (Rock City) plays Sable at the very end but is not included in zip.
- MUSIC_0d566040.MIB (interleave 7A00) (I don't know the song name) plays Toxin at the very end but is not included in zip.

[the MIB files don't play in WinAmp, but they play in MFAudio]

The hcs project list by hcs at 3:52 AM EDT on March 10, 2008
Here's the hcs project list
or: What's on my mind
or: Why hcs isn't working on what you want

Things I'm working on:

vgmstream - a moderately ambitious project to play streamed audio better than in_cube which no one is helping me with yet...
brsar_unpack - a half-useful .brsar unpacker, needs more useful
lafs - a half-useful .afs unpacker
alt-n64dev - trying to get this into a more useful and clean state, specifically getting a usable gsupload
school - a light, but nontrivial, courseload for my last semester
work - preparations for my first real job, including moving halfway across the country
straightening shit up - my room, my computer, etc.

Things I really want to work on (from time to time includes the above):

sdat tool - sdat extraction that doesn't suck
Escape from Pong 2 - a game I'm trying to write (game design, code, graphics, music)
SNES emu for N64 - I must do this.
minimal input programming language for portable devices - if you suggest Brainfuck you don't get what I mean, but I haven't arrived at exactly what I mean either...
rockbox - wikipedia viewer needs a lot of work, as does gbs player and the broken playback engine
gekko - we gotta get GC audio emulation working
SNES development - bought a backup system, haven't written a damned thing for it
Lookfar - Distant Planets Java port less than halfway done

and this is why I always feel busy and/or guilty about both not doing stuff and doing stuff.

Soul Calibur II original Gamecube audio by Akai Duran at 5:54 PM EDT on March 17, 2008
Is this available anywhere on this site? I like the instruments heard in the Gamecube audio more than the ones heard in the original soundtrack.... especially when it comes to songs like Hubris. The Erhu beats that tinny violin synth they used in the soundtrack anyday.

I don't need MP3s, just the original audio files (which is what I'm sure you deal in anyway).

64th note tags not working in Winamp 5.52 by SeanV at 4:18 PM EDT on March 20, 2008
The 64th note plugin works just dandy in Winamp 5.52, except for one thing: the tags!
After scanning my media library to find them, Winamp behaves as though the metadata was not found, and tried to read metadata from the filename(at which it failed horribly.)
When I click "edit selected items" on any .usf file, the tags are either blank or incorrect, depending on whether I enabled the "guess tags" option. However, if I choose "view file info," all the tags are there. Why won't Winamp recognize these tags? It makes sense to me that the 64th note plugin would pass this tagging data to Winamp, but this is obviously not happening. Does anyone have an answer or even a solution?

Conker\'s Bad Fur Day Arranged & Complete X-Box Rip by Doctor Phileas Fragg at 9:27 PM EDT on March 27, 2008
I'm not asking you, I'm telling you. Stupid Rare and their consecutive incomplete game albums. Give it a shot, it contains Windy & Co.!

You can either get it in the lossless, space-eating FLAC format, around 120 megabytes per file:

Disc1a
Disc1b
Disc2a
Disc2b
Disc3a
Disc3b
Disc4a
Disc4b

Or the compact and lossy OGG Vorbis format, around 70 megabytes per file:

Disc 1
Disc 2
Disc 3
Disc 4

Yes, OGG instead of MP3, because there's no such thing as a 6-channel MP3 as far as I know.

Is this even the right sort of place to post this sort of thing? Ah well, it's my first post - I do not yet have any credibility to sacrifice.

Metroid Prime Hunters mini2sf oddities by CapComMDb at 11:53 PM EDT on March 28, 2008
Hi all. I've been trying to figure out how the Metroid Prime Hunters soundtrack works for some time. They have some incredible use of dynamic audio going on here, but it's beyond anything I've been able to figure out with the latest vio2sf. Let me try to explain the dilemma.

For some tracks, the game appears to be making use of turning on and off audio channels or SPU channels to store multiple BGM in a single track. A good example is the Arcterra II theme (labeled 000d). This track contains both the Arcterra II main theme AND the Arcterra Puzzle Theme. (Or if you don't use Fileplanet, download just the Arcterra II theme here and compare it with the mini2sf.)

So basically, if you play the mini2sf file, you will hear BOTH of these themes playing simultaneously. (Incidentally, there are many other tracks that do this same thing, of which the Escape sequence - track 0034 - is another good example; also note that the game increases the tempo of this theme based on how close to 0 the timer is).

At first, I thought you could isolate the Puzzle Theme or the Arcterra II theme by simply turning on and off the different SPU's. However, this is not possible because the SPU's that contain the puzzle theme ALSO contain parts of the Arcterra II theme - it is simply impossible to isolate unless you dynamically turned on and off the SPU's.

At this point, I don't understand how the mini2sf file and audio emulator is working and how it might be possible to isolate each track. Is this a problem that anyone else has noticed in other DS soundtracks?

Embed DLLs in EXE? by Yoshinkeru at 10:46 PM EDT on March 29, 2008
Perhaps not exactly related to video game musics, but you guys are among the most experienced programmers I know, so I figured this would be my best bet to get the answer I need.

You see, I've been working for some time now on a little project, utilizing a tool called Blade Engine, which helps in the creation of visual novels.

The thing is, the main EXE Blade Engine uses requires DirectX 9--or at least, just one of its DLLs, d3dx9_30.dll. For some time, it seemed I would have to copy this file into the system32 folder of each computer I wanted to show this on, which would become tedious, not to mention the fact that some computers I've encountered (here on campus) do not grant administrative privileges.

Recently I've found that it IS possible to somehow build the DLL into the EXE, but every program I've run across that actually DOES this (don't get me started on the dead ends) are all shareware, and once the trial version's done, that's it. And these programs are pretty pricey. I've already tried PEBundle, and Molebox, again, is just too much.

Now, don't get me wrong: I'll pay for a program if I think it's worth paying for. I even shelled out the $9.95 for the full version of Audiosurf. But I wonder, is it too much to ask for a freeware program, that just embeds (or whatever) DLLs into EXEs? PEBundle is the closest I've gotten, but again, it turned out to be a timed trial--and a short trial at that.

Hope some of you have some answers.

Any Last FM users? PSFs and SPCs do not work by Lunar at 6:29 AM EDT on April 7, 2008
I'm trying to figure out how I can get Last FM to pick up PSF and SPC files, as they are a huge portion of my listening habits. USF, SSF, 2SF and VGZ seem to get picked up by the Last FM software no problem, but strangely PSF doesn't, which confuses me as it's the same tagging format as other xSF formats, or so I thought. I understand SPC is a different tagging format though, so I'm not surprised that doesn't work.

Perhaps there is some 3rd party software that will pick them up? I figure this would be a good place to ask.

(obviously converting all the soundtracks to mp3 is not feasible, before anyone mentions it.)

EDIT: guess I should mention GSF also doesn't work, and that I'm using Winamp.

The main reason I'm interested in in-cube and stuff is beacause I want the soundtrack from the game Amazing Island. I searched and requested it many times, and it comes down to trying to get it from my copy of the game. I have the disc, but I need to know how to access the files on it. Can anyone give me advice on how to get to the files on the disc so I can play them? I know how to play them as I've already installed the plugin in Winamp. I just need to move the files from the disc.

Music Files in \"Titanic: Adventure Out of Time\" by sithlord999 at 4:18 PM EDT on April 7, 2008
I'm trying to rip the music from the 1996 PC game "Titanic: Adventure Out of Time", but I've ran into a problem.

I couldn't identify the format of the audio files, so I imported them into Audacity as RAW. While I can hear the music playing, it's very distorted and there's lots of static.

Does anyone know of a way to get these in their original form? Here's one of the files if you need to look at it:

Does anyone know if this is the latest version of AOSSF for winamp, or if there is another plugin, or if there is another source of these files, because quite a few of them don't play correctly, for example the map theme, when a crash symbol plays, it carries on loudly, it does this in a number of songs... Is this just that SSF plugins are still unfinished? Or is it badly ripped files.

Mario Kart Wii complete soundtrack fully tagged (also Brawl) by VideoGameScrapBook at 12:49 AM EDT on April 30, 2008
As with nearly all of the Gamecube/Wii soundtracks out there, thanks to hcs for making it possible!

-Includes all of the music cues, including the alternate versions heard on different parts of each track.
-The titles follow previous official Mario Kart soundtracks.
-The composers, artists, and years for every song have been tagged.
-The song order is based off of what would be likely on an official soundtrack.
-Soundtrack style fades.

MegaMan Network Transmission Music - in_cube plug-in and lossless encoding (FLAC) by CyberSpark at 3:25 AM EDT on April 30, 2008
Hi I'm new here. VideoGameScrapBook informed me about this site. Thanks. :)

OK so I've read through the list of games that support the in_cube plug-in and was happy to see that it should work for MegaMan Network Transmission. :D Now please note that I'm very new to all of this, I've never used Winamp (VLC media player user) and just recently heard about the in_cube plug-in.

What I would like to do is extract all of the music from MegaMan Network Transmission (Gamecube disc), burn it to CD(s) first and then encode it in lossless for archival purposes. Can someone walk a noob through the steps of how to do this? I can handle the lossless encoding part myself. Better yet, if someone has already done this (in lossless FLAC or APE) could you send me the files?

I also want to be able to loop some of the songs to match that of the inferior mp3 quality game recodings. Most "game-rips" (recodings) that I've seen have 32 songs with 91 minutes worth of music. An 800MB CD should hold 91 minutes, right? Anyway, I'd really appreciate help on this. Thanks for reading. :)
