1. You sure 128 kbps MP3 is better than XMA?

2. Isn't XMA basically WMA?

3. Last time I checked, 128 kbps WMA beat MP3 at the same bit rate, no matter the encoder. Specs of the XMA?

It would be ironic if the Xbox 360 version had inferior everything except audio.
by OrangeC at 4:33 PM EDT on September 14, 2010
hey guys i got the atrac3plus sdk creation/decoder files, it could somehow help on atrac3 stereo and multichannel decoding, but as it is its from the ps3 sdk and i don't know if its right to post them here as its from the ps3 sdk?

what do you think?
by bxaimc at 5:55 PM EDT on September 14, 2010
@SmartOne: Geez give it a rest already. So what? XMA sucks and WMA sucks period.
by furrybob at 6:04 PM EDT on September 14, 2010
Just wondering, but how good would you say the quality of brstm/dsp files is?
by SmartOne at 6:57 PM EDT on September 14, 2010
If ADPCM were so great, it would be used for general audio. I don't know if 4-bit, 44100 Hz ADPCM is better than 128 kbps MP3, but ADPCM lacks certain swashy artifacts of psychoacoustic models.

Wouldn't it be funny if the Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII had better audio, even if slightly? I'd laugh. Ha. (Preemptive.)
by OrangeC at 7:02 PM EDT on September 14, 2010
Can someone answer my question about if its illegal to post files from ps3 sdk? on this site?
by arbingordon at 7:05 PM EDT on September 14, 2010
1. You sure 128 kbps MP3 is better than XMA?

I don't think BX said that.
So far, he's said:
hahahah you think Katamari Forever is any better? it's freaking ATRAC3plus!

The game's pretty big so I'll get to it soon.

CBR, 160 on Trial, 128 on Final. Still sounds great to me compared to the XMA set.

Come on, it's not that bad.
So no, he hasn't said anything of the sort that "128 kbps MP3 is better than XMA"

2. Isn't XMA basically WMA?

Something like it.

3. Last time I checked, 128 kbps WMA beat MP3 at the same bit rate, no matter the encoder. Specs of the XMA?

True, however you're operating under the assumption that the XMA would be 128+kbits and that WMA=XMA quality-wise.
The fact that the XMA would be 128+k is debateable, as neither of us have evidence to its exact bitrate - if you can prove that it's 128+, please do so.
You also seem to think that XMA = WMA qualitywise what makes you think that? Because they've been related to each other? I think you're not factoring in they were both designed for different purposes, XMA being used for music without producing high CPU load, instead, producing consistent load so as to not impede the flow of the game, whereas WMA would be used for more quality driven implementations, at the cost of more CPU.

Just wondering, but how good would you say the quality of brstm/dsp files is?

Usually, it's 4-bit ADPCM, so it's about 1/4th the quality of it's PCM equivalent, though I'm told BRSTM/DSP can contain raw PCM as well, in which case it's as good as CD (barring the lower sampling rate).
I'd compare it to 128-160kbit LAME encoded MP3, personally.
by bxaimc at 7:06 PM EDT on September 14, 2010
@SmartOne: It doesn't have better audio, the PS3 set does.

@OrangeC: Yes it is. But anyway, we already have the SDK.

Implies a > b.

Come on, it's not that bad.

128 kbps MP3 is pretty bad.

...it's 4-bit ADPCM, so it's about 1/4th the quality of it's PCM equivalent...

The resolution of ADPCM has nothing to do with the resolution of PCM. Different encoding schemes.
by arbingordon at 7:23 PM EDT on September 14, 2010
Implies a > b.
Yes, which is quite possible if the XMA bitrate is lower than the MP3's bitrate, and you pull your head out of your ass to stop deluding yourself that XMA is the same as WMA quality-wise.

The resolution of ADPCM has nothing to do with the resolution of PCM. Different encoding schemes.
Sorry, I figured it was implied that it'd be 16-bit PCM - > 4-bit ADPCM.
Do you understand now that I've cleared that up?
by bxaimc at 7:28 PM EDT on September 14, 2010

128 kbps mp3s were horrible back when they were popular some 15 years ago. 160 was never much better. Such a low rate on a high def game is atrocious, especially with some 20gb free disc space.
by SmartOne at 8:03 PM EDT on September 14, 2010
Sorry for having a discussion.

And I never said XMA was exactly WMA. Just a possibility, or similarity, or likelihood. I was hoping someone could share some information.

Reasons to DL FFXIII (PS3)

-Sounds soooo much better than the 360 XMA set
-Supported by vgmstream
-Occupies less space than XMA set
-It actually loops! (Without converting to wav and using the .pos files)
-It's PS3!!!

Having downloaded the Trial version first, I actually saw that the original file names had been kept -- but unfortunately, in the tagging process of the regular version of FF13, the original file names were changed with the OST titles. Would it be possible for someone to post the filenames before they were altered with the OST titles?

by bxaimc at 2:06 PM EDT on October 3, 2010
set everything to 0
by SmartOne at 5:01 PM EDT on October 3, 2010
Maybe looping doesn't work in XMPlay? Setting everything to zero doesn't help.

Little Big Planet:
Will the part-files be hard-coded into vgmstream to allow multi-channel playback, or would this be too game-specific (simulating the game's audio engine)? Most of the files aren't meant to be heard alone (though it is kind of cool for five seconds).

Right now, multichannel is still not supported because there's some technical issues with the MP3 support for FSB because FMOD likes doing screwy things with it. Eventually we'll be able to listen to multichannel but we'd like to get the actual support become more stable first.

@SmartOne: Looping those files won't work in XMPlay, since those are just MP3 files and as such are getting taken over by XMPlay's native decoder.

@SmartOne: I tested out a single track in Winamp and couldn't get it to loop either. Do all tracks loop or only specific ones?

Also, the .scds are treated as mp3s in Winamp also, so if what Knurek says is true this would be why no one seems to be getting it to work :)

Is .scd a recent or old extension as handled by vgmstream? I have r824 atm. Maybe I should update?

@Judgetto: I've noticed not everyone here keeps an always on connection, so just keep it there and it'll be grabbed eventually, I'd wager.
by SmartOne at 10:47 PM EDT on October 4, 2010
The Gapra Whitewood should loop. I'd rather use a POS file with the soundtrack...

Should definitely work with .SCD
by Hotcakes at 7:03 PM EDT on October 5, 2010
CATASTROPHIC FAILURE! The latest vgmstream doesn't play them at all! It still plays other stuff so it's not like I screwed up the dlls :p It also doesn't pass them off to Winamps mp3 decoder, just skips right over them onto the next tune.

Now I'm -really- confused.

The Castlevania: Lords of Shadow X360 OGGs, as taken straight from the disc images:

Rapidshare
Depositfiles

The two discs have identical music archives.
The musicbox rendition of "Vampire Killer" seems to be stored in an XMA file in the *.packed files (where all the non-voice SFX apparently are).

Here's a set of the same OGGs at higher bitrates, presumably due to some conversion on the part of the uploader. Whether that actually does anything is totally beyond me:
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

incidentally, here are two separate but likely very similar lossy rips of the soundtrack CD from the LE:
Lossy rip, one dude's version
Lossy rip, another dude's version(mirror: Mediafire)

As for the music itself....well, I am not even remotely impressed. Supposedly there are several Castlevania themes in there, but the only ones I can tell are those I already knew were in there (the poor arrange of the waterfalls theme from SCIV and the pitiful Vampire Killer cameo in the music box level)

Thanks for the links. I've only listened to the Promo CD, but I have to say that I think you're being a little unfair in your judgment.

It's great music. It's well done and well-produced, even if it lingers on some generic Hollywood/VG strings for a while. It'll never be a favorite of mine but, clearly, its biggest sin is sounding nothing like a Castlevania score. Outside of that fact, I don't know why you insist on trashing it. Disconnect your expectations from your experience.

Sonic The Hedgehog 4. Is the music streamed or sequenced?
by bxaimc at 10:36 PM EDT on October 12, 2010
Should be streamed on 360/PS3 since the leaked beta or w/e on PartnerNet used AAX. I assume it'll be the same. The wii port is sequenced though.
by agu fungus at 12:08 AM EDT on October 13, 2010
Interestingly, I think the Wii version uses two types of sequences: one for the original songs (Stages, Boss 2, for example), and MIDI for the classic songs (Jingles from Sonic 3, and Boss 1 from Sonic 3D Blast beta). Think these sequences can be analyzed? And can the 360/PS3 soundtrack be uploaded (not the MP3s, but the actual streams)?

Yay Kirby!
I figured it would be best to keep the file size down and make separate archives for the different voice tracks.

When I played the Wii version of Sonic 4 (I can't say I was impressed with the final product) I noticed that Act 2 of the second Zone had a different BGM from the beta, so I wondered if the other versions had that change too. And yes, they did. The other new track is the World Map.

Edit: I don't remember there being a Cut Scene song in the game.

Thank you so much bxaimc! The Wipeout HD soundtrack is amazing. I never knew cuz I didn't like the demo :)
by Knurek at 6:39 AM EDT on October 17, 2010
bxaimc, a question: what's the proper way to play all those ATRAC3Plus files? There must be a way, since you're tagged RR7 set, but I'm rather behind the curve on this topic.
by bxaimc at 10:01 AM EDT on October 17, 2010
Well, since ATRAC3plus files have RIFF headers (most, not all), you need a wav extractor, but there are times that if you use a plain ol' wav extractor, you might be skipping over another header the file possibly might have. If you want to listen to PS3 ATRAC3plus you need Sony Sound Forge (I use 10, Full version). But before that you need to convert the RIFF header into an OMA/AA3 (OpenMG Audio stuffs) header for it to be recognized by it. The sonic stage decoder won't work with PS3 ATRAC3plus for some unknown reason (maybe this AT3+ is a newer type? or maybe the new SS release will fix that?). Another issue is that Sound Forge doesn't install a directshow filter that, of course, lets you listen to PSP ATRAC3plus (after converting its header first). Unfortunately the HiMD Renderer doesn't like PS3 ATRAC3plus so slapping an OMA/AA3 header would be difficult if you don't know what you're doing. Ridge Racer 7 is even worse because not only is it PS3 ATRAC3plus, it's also multichannel (6 channels). I also noticed that PSP ATRAC3plus is sampled @ 44khz while PS3 ATRAC3plus has 48khz. Dunno if I answered you question....did I? :P

are there any plans to update the "online database" at manakoAT's sub-site?
by bxaimc at 8:59 PM EDT on October 18, 2010
It's a lot of work so please be patient ^^;
by Dais! at 10:20 PM EDT on October 18, 2010
no worries, I was just curious if it was an abandoned project or what. I thought it might be something you could update with the DAT files pretty easily, but I know absolutely nothing about database design (especially in terms of web interfaces). This is generally a slow, quiet community so there's no real rush.
by bxaimc at 10:36 PM EDT on October 18, 2010
Yea, he's a bit behind since we've been ripping like crazy over the past few months.

How are POS files created for looping PCM?
by bxaimc at 7:22 AM EDT on October 19, 2010
POS files are just 8 byte (Little Endian) files containing 4 bytes for a loop start and 4 bytes for a loop end. They're only for wav.

Thanks, it works! Too bad the Final Fantasy XIII OST isn't designed for looping (using the streams' loop points).
by Knurek at 5:26 AM EDT on October 20, 2010
@bxaimc: Let me put it more clearly. I have your Ridge Racer 7 rip. I want to play it. What do I do?
