Stupid Question by Rew at 11:20 PM EDT on September 3, 2008
I know this site is mainly for music and audio. But does anyone here have any experience with ripping or extracting images from games?

I'm asking specifically about Mega Man X Command Mission. I have the PS2 version disc in my computer right now, and I want to open the icon file (it has a .ico suffix). Does anyone know what software program I can use to open it? I'm trying to get the sprites for the boss icons that you see at the bottom of the screen during boss battles, to see when a boss's turn is coming up. I'm assuming those are in the file called ICON00.ICO.

(I tried using your standard programs like Paint and Windows Photo Gallery, but those are of course unsupported.)

Again, my apologies if this is ridiculously off-topic for an audio-related forum like this. =P

I can't help you, but don't worry about it being off topic. The board is really for anything, only threads are supposed to be for a single topic and we don't stick too tightly to that anyway.

When I used to dabble in making themes for Windows XP (which is quite a while ago now), I used http://www.microangelo.us/

Now I'm not saying it's going to work with PS2 icon files (assuming that's what they really are), but it's a pretty decent program (if you get the full/unlocked) version with lots of easy to use features.

There are many free alternatives, but this one just had that 'wow' factor and made creating, containing/extracting files a piece of cake. :)

Thanks, hcs.

And thank you too, Connie, but Microangelo didn't succeed in opening the .ico file on my PS2 game. =(

Does anyone else have any ideas how I might open up and view this file?

i'm going off blind knowledge here, but if i remember correctly, apogee (www.3drealms.com) released a pc game called alien carnage (halloween harry) which is now free on their website. there was a file called harry.ico but it wasnt an icon, it was a binary collection, so maybe it isn't an icon?
