Mother 3 minigsf - Bad? by Sonicandtails at 2:05 PM EDT on October 25, 2008
I was tagging/timing the Mother 3 minigsf rip by UNKNOWNFILE, and eventually came across the fact that there are a lot of repeats which led to missing songs. For instance, Could anyone possibly rerip it? That would be amazing if possible, then I could proceed with tagging and timing. 233.minigsf is an example of one that is a repeat of an earlier song.

Well that's what you get for having an idiot rip something. The Wario Ware inc rip is the same way.
Hi, my name is unknownfile. Thank you for taking the time to submit a report about a bad rip.
At Dumbass Inc., we believe that our customers like all sorts of things, and that is why we have made a corrected rip that we just haven't gotten around to submitting. It will be posted later.
To persue more fields we have decided that GSF is not a very profitable field anymore, so we haven't bothered to post a rip that wouldn't be very popular if not for a fan translation being released suddenly.
Thank you for your comments and concerns and we hope to serve you better in the near future.
I don't know what happened with my post, but it got jumbled up...My "For instance," got put near the top of the post for some reason. It should have been "For instance, 233.minigsf is an example of one that is a repeat of an earlier song.".
Anyways, thanks for the soon-to-be update :)

There, it's uploaded. Now go tag and time the thing, and I'll update GSF Central later.
In other news, I just checked the GSF submission list and aside from like 1/3rds of it being spam, I also got the tagged Warioware set from Indogutsu. It's up at GSF Central if anyone wants it.
Also, since you're in GSF tinkering mode, could you look at Super Robot Taisen OG 2? I've saptapped the first one (available here: ftp://ftp.modland.com/pub/modules/Gameboy%20Sound%20Format/-%20unknown/Super%20Robot%20Taisen%20Original%20Generation/), has some catchy music, the second one though uses an updated sappy driver, and saptapper can't find the vsync address IIRC.

I figured I'd just wait for someone else to figure out all the tracks, but in this case, it was just letting someone else do the pestering.
Missing tracks didn't bug me much because I wouldn't know they were missing without the music player...which kind of defeats the purpose of whining about the GSF set. It's just nice to have a more optimized player for the music, but I wouldn't rank it's missing stuff worth being insulting over. The optimized set has the track that I listened to for about an hour in a sitting, so I don't see it as being much of a problem.
Nenson thinks that because he's found a place to start getting better, he can act as pissy as if he actually contributed something significant. I leave such things to UF, as he's earned the right to be an uppity evil manipulative bastard many times over for what he's accomplished, and that's not even counting the stuff he's done that I benefit from directly.
If nenson wants to find some music, he should go try to find it instead of whining about it.
In VBA-M, play a music piece you like from the sound test menu, then look near address 02001F28. That should give you the lookup number(byte flip 1F28 and 1F29 for both digits. Other addresses are definately used, but seem to follow the numbering used in the set)
I may go ahead and make something to deal with the numbering myself, but with this info, I'm sure there's a ton of people willing to put together the sound test menu with the correct tagging.
how many tracks are there in Mother 3 anyway, including all unused stuff and alternate versions? the mp3 rip i have has 250 tracks total, and i gather the music player in the game has 250 also, but doesn't cover everything in the game according to this. so i'm guessing the GSF set should have more than 250 tracks?
shame in_gsf in Winamp doesn't work with last FM, else i could delete this rip after the GSF set is tagged. nevertheless, i'd love to have a complete tagged GSF set all the same (without missing tunes or a million SFX!)
No track numbers? I will do this if you want (and add tags) - so long as no-one else is already doing it, since I've been caught out with that before. Also, if I do this, should I put everything not on the soundtest as 999, or do you think it'd be better to do like 43a, 43b etc. for unused versions of similar songs? I'm leaning towards the former.
EDIT: Rock and Roll (Spicy).minigsf seems incorrectly timed. Haven't noticed any others so far though there may be some.
Now that you mention it, Unknownfile, I uploaded long time ago an updated GSF set for Pokemon Emerald, all retagged, reoptimized and with playlist files for each game. It's at the Updates folder in PSFrippers Yahoo group.
seems like there's either a problem with this set or with my GSF player. will post again/edit when i have more info.
EDIT: well, they're all numbered at least. but I haven't added tags yet, since the set seems to be messed up. firstly some of the filenames seemed to be incorrect, like fassad & interpretter, shave & lipstick, rock & roll, chapter 5 and a few others. Not sure why that is, but I HAVE had an error with GSF sets in the past where they play the wrong songs. I changed them to the best of my ability based on what I could hear, but there's still at least four tracks missing. Here are the numbered ones I know about:
035 Letter From You, My Sweet.minigsf 144 Rock and Roll (Spicy).minigsf 184 More Audacious March.minigsf 232 Even More Intense Guys.minigsf
I also renamed some of the longer filenames to more concise, less descriptive alternatives. I've uploaded what I have here (you'll need to keep the gsflib): http://www.vgmusic.com/~lunar/mother3.zip - for all I know, these may now not play the right songs for other people, but they're the right songs for me, as far as I can see (checking against both the ingame sound test and another mp3 rip I have..)
also, I can't remember where dunno.minigsf is used. It was called "Chapter 5" in the previous set IIRC, and i'm sure it isn't any of the missing ones. also, empty.minigsf WAS what was called Rock & Roll (Spicy), but it's clearly not that at all, as the tag length is <1 second, and even after turning times off there's silence (at least for me). "NPC Loves You" was renamed to "battle sound effect.minigsf" too - because that's what plays, for me.
if anyone can improve upon the rip or figure out what's happened to the missing tunes, please fire away. dunno what the heck is going on. man..... emulation huh...
knurek you could use ugetab's renamer, copy across the other non-soundtest minigsfs from the set i uploaded, and delete all the unnamed ones. if i'd known ugetab was working on something i wouldn't have started renaming anything. this has to be like the fourth time this has happened now.
whatever the case, at least the set is getting completed.
EDIT: that is if there aren't more full tracks in the untagged ones - there might be some that were missed, what with the other set being all messed up like it was. *shrug*

Go ahead and optimize the thing, it should be fine.
I put the renaming batch up to take care of the 250 soundtrack songs, because they could be extracted definitively. If someone wants to go through the rest of the GSF, they can do so without hitting 250 pieces of known music.
As a side note, I wasn't really 'working on this' until about 6:00 last night. Seemed like there was a lot of confusion about all the soundtest tracks, even though there was already a way to definitively say which track was which, and remove the need to judge soundtest tracks audibly.
There is a one second gap before a song starts, because the Gameboy Player logo is shown very quickly. I couldn't get the player working before then, so I modified the logo to not wait for vblanks to get it to go away faster.
The final set will not contain this gap because I hate you.
