Editing .brsar Archives? by furrybob at 7:49 PM EDT on April 13, 2009
Is it possible to edit sounds in a .brsar archive, more specifically Brawl's smashbros_sound.brsar

Which is it? Editing brstm or brsar?
by Mouser X at 8:43 PM EDT on April 13, 2009
To clarify bxaimc's question, BRSTM is a streamed format (similar to WAV, or CDA), and a BRSAR is an archive that stores various files, usually sound effects, or sample data. A BRSAR is NOT a streamed format, and is not a BRSTM. On the opposite end, a BRSTM is NOT and archive. Really, you shouldn't be associating them in the same sentence the way you are. Though, sometimes a BRSAR will contain BRSTM.

So, as near as I am able, the answer to your questions is "Theoretically you can edit a BRSAR, but no tool exists to do so." As for the BRSTM (a completely different question), I would say "Sort of. You can output the BRSTM to a WAV, edit that, and then re-encode it to a BRSTM. Personally, I wouldn't recommend this because there is likely going to be some loss in the audio quality."

I hope that helps. Mouser X over and out.

oops, I meant to put brsar, not brstm.
I know what each is, I just accidentally typed the wrong one because I deal with brstm files a whole lot more than I do brsar

I don't think we're quite at the point where brsar is understood well enough to rewrite it. It should be doable, it would just require some more work hacking at the format and probably a good deal of testing to make sure that the rebuilt brsar still works. It was doable with brstm, I expect it could be done again, even though brsar is a bit more complex it is about the same level of organization (and shares a lot in common structurally).
But at the moment I don't think there are any tools to do it.

Has there been any update upon this? Has anyone tried to create a converter? I'm also interested to edit Brawl's smashbros_sound.brsar

It's important to the Smash community that this be doable, I personally would be willing to help in anyway, if needed. As you said "probably a good deal of testing"

I'd just like to know if anything could be done, or if it already has.

Has there been any progress on brsar archives?

With the development of tools that can edit brawl character's movesets and a model/animation editor being released in the next month or so, people are starting to want to add, or at the least replace, audio clips.
by bxaimc at 4:58 PM EDT on August 25, 2009
Well......I have made stuff that can help extract the RSEQs, RBNKs, RWSDs, RWARs, and RWAVs from brsar archives.
by furrybob at 5:30 PM EDT on August 26, 2009
But nobody's worked on rebuilding them
by hcs at 5:35 PM EDT on August 26, 2009
Correct.
by bxaimc at 10:02 PM EDT on August 26, 2009
I don't think there would be a point to rebuild them since most of the time brsars are filled with sfx and sequences instead of streamed music.
by hcs at 10:52 AM EDT on August 27, 2009
I think the point is that people want to replace sfx.

How exactly is the brsar archive structured? Are the files compressed at all? I was hoping there might be a possibility of extracting the raw files and using a standalone wav converter, and it seems that the extraction part is already covered. It's pretty obvious how impractical an actual repacking program would be, given the size of Brawl's brsar. It would be much easier to create a file inserter, or even to just hex the files back in.

The brsar unpacker has automatic conversion; what would be involved with making a standalone converter from it? And if one were made, how difficult would it be to convert the files back after they were edited?
by hcs at 11:31 PM EDT on September 5, 2009
Hm, good question. Shouldn't be too hard to add in some debug stuff to print out exactly where the files come from (if that isn't already in there).he audio is generally in DSP format, for anything more specific than that you'd have to look at the code. The best way to make DSP is still Nintendo's DSPADPCM.exe from the GC devkit. There's no reason you couldn't write over the existing sfx. I think the sample count stuff is identified in the unpacker so if you have a shorter sound you can adjust that.
brsar player possible? by jurassicPieter at 12:57 PM EDT on September 11, 2009
Hey people,
i was checking the contents of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Life as a king wad and came to the conclusion the entire game is scripted and the scripts are unencrypted and plaintext.

And one of the scripts if handling the music inculding loading which brsar to load.

We could rewrite the scripts so it loads a brsar and play a single song and not loading any graphics. If you would change it back into a wad-file you can install a channel on your wii that plays sequences in a brsar file. If the Dolphin Emulator is capable of running the wad we could make a new xSF format! :P

the script file with the music manager code inside:
