Soooo... PS3 encryption? by Hotcakes at 10:32 PM EDT on August 22, 2010
I've only been reading the headlines so I'm not all up on the ins of PS Jailbreak, but I did read one bit where it was italics speculated that PS Jailbreak doesn't decrypt files on the fly, but must decrypt files as it copies them to the hard drive.
So... anybody following the developments or looked/looking into a couple of games to see if they can find anything?
IIRC PS3 discs have an encryption layer that's only read when the PS3 OS is running and is ignored when running "OtherOS". Along with that, game files remain encrypted with another encryption by the devs. For PSN stuff, when installing to the HDD, the PS3 decrypts it when installing. When backing up a PS3 HDD, it encrypts everything and decrypts it when restoring it back to the PS3.
Okay so wait PS jailbreak backup manager doesn't decrypt the game while backing up to internal PS3 HD or external Hard drive?
I heard also it copies file by file instead of an iso, so thats a sign o decryption? i would of thought since ps jailbreak tricsk the ps3 into thinking its a debug console then it should decrypt the games files as its dumping?
Yeah - the disk layer of encryption has been stripped (the PS3 does it natively) however the actual SELF layer of encryption is still on the EBOOT.BIN.
Hopefully someone uploads thme toa filehosting site, im real itchy to get my hands on a derypted game.
also about ps3's codec
The PlayStation3 game Race Driver: Grid uses 224 simultaneous streams of ATRAC3 compressed audio, with between one and eight channels per stream at sample rates between 24 and 48 KHz, each filtered using 512 frequency bands of adaptive equalisation, routed via six reverb units running on the same SPU co-processor (one of eight on the PS3's Cell chip), alongside 7.1 channel hybrid third-order Ambisonic mixing.[6]
Oh hell, I hope they do use something as simple as PCM. I guess (with my puny knowledge compared to almost everyone else here) it would make sense to do that, since they have so much space on the disc and it normally goes unused, you could leave the audio uncompressed and the processor wouldn't have to work as hard at playing it as music it'd have to decompress. I figured since they're only just now able to be dumped, it'd take a long time before we'll be able to play music ripped from the games. Let's all cross our fingers that the format is something simple and we'll all be able to listen to PS3 streamed audio soon.
We Also how to figure out that atrac variant assuming its much different then its psp coutnerpart, oh the joy and excitement is consumingme!! i must have this stick, i have three games that i could dump.
Virtua Fighter is most likey ADX. BTW, current dumps before PS Jailbreak will not work and are useless because of course, they were dumped using the OtherOS feature on the PS3 (now gone).
@Franpa: it also depends on the quality of the game engine.
I also have a feeling it might use the devs propietery codec, however doesn't hurt to take a peak ;)
EDIT; Mw1 is heing upped to the same place im downloading virtual fighters, that def should use a ps3 codec or pcm as on pc mp3 360 xma. so ps3 hint hint ;D
Damn, read up somewhere and apparently MGS4 uses the same stupid .dat archives that they used in MGS3 - the dat's weren't the problem but what's inside was; MGS3 used some sort of proprietary audio codec, and I just hope that MGS4 doesn't...
Also, the Sony games seem to use some sort of gigantic archive for game data - Uncharted 2 and Resistance FOM both contain archives that exceed 4 GB. And we thought they'd go easy on us - I guess they're too paranoid to put out isolated game files even with the encryption.
HOLY CRAP JESUS ON A STICK that was fast! Manako you crazy bastard. I was NOT expecting such a short turn around on the first game.
@Orange: not all games are decrypted properly. Some games reported to not be working (such as COD4) still have encrypted files after copying - this may or may not be why it doesn't work.
@pietastesgood: Usually it's not so much about keeping the files hidden, it is more about drive seek speed - if the files are separated the drive has to skip back and forth from the TOC to the file, for every file it reads. If everything is in one file the seeking is at least halved.
Also, any of the games that have files >4GB in size probably can't be ripped, since I don't think anyone has access to files on the PS partition and FAT32 of course doesn't support them. Would have been nice if the backup manager at least truncated the large files, but oh well early days yet.
Man oh man. I can't wait for Katamari Forever and Folklore. But they are so niche... maybe I should buy a stick and dump it myself :/
From what I recall, it's a WIP because it's a format manokoAT isn't entirely familiar with. I think he "passed it off" to someone else. Thus, although the WIP is on the tracker, I don't know if it would be very useful to anyone yet. Maybe VGMstream just needs to be updated to support it, or maybe it requires a re-rip (and thus downloading it might be a waste of bandwidth). Either way, yes, the WIP is available. I just figured a small explanation/word-of-warning might useful to some people. Mouser X over and out.
OrangeC is right, most likely. Sale/import of modchips themselves are not technically illegal in Australia. The Backup Manager can be taken down but the second that happens it will become cloud-ware. You know... found everywhere, hosted nowhere.
The funniest bit is where they were given the right to confiscate all stock in the retailers possession. If there hadn't been a week delay, that would have been a lot of stock! As it stands, it's just the 'sample' sticks they were given. Very fortunate.
Posted by snakemeat: fsb_mp3g.exe .bat file to convert Little Big Planet: http://pastebin.com/s8iuCA1N , thanks for the info hcs (and your well known tool)
There's no FSB/MPEG support yet, fsb_mpeg can be found in hcs' tools folder
Edit: Decided to paste the whole batch code here, before it expires on pastebin:
Just looked at ratchet and clank qfb and it uses some variant of ps2 adpcm but it is XVAG and it appears to be lossless with a 10 byte interleave. the quality is outstanding!! i can decode it with mfaudio also.
I'll check Bad Company 2 and Assassins Creed 2 soon and possibly FFXIII if I have time although that one is really easy to extract data from. I think RR7 might be multichannel if not lossless.
PS Jailbreak has been reverse engineered and it has been possible to build your own for about a week now (and PS Jailbreak or clones have not yet shipped). There is also a working port for the Nokia N900 and other platforms (PSP/iPhone/Android/possibly even SIXAXIS) in various stages of development.
I grabbed a few bgm files off the Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds disc. They have a .sgb file extension, something I've never seen before. Opening one up in a hex editor didn't help either.
If someone wants to check this format out, I uploaded one of the files to Dropbox here.
