Soooo... PS3 encryption? by Hotcakes at 10:32 PM EDT on August 22, 2010
I've only been reading the headlines so I'm not all up on the ins of PS Jailbreak, but I did read one bit where it was italics speculated that PS Jailbreak doesn't decrypt files on the fly, but must decrypt files as it copies them to the hard drive.

So... anybody following the developments or looked/looking into a couple of games to see if they can find anything?
by bxaimc at 10:38 PM EDT on August 22, 2010
Still technically impossible unless you know how to crack the hypervisor, perform ram dumps, etc.
by bxaimc at 10:51 PM EDT on August 22, 2010
IIRC PS3 discs have an encryption layer that's only read when the PS3 OS is running and is ignored when running "OtherOS". Along with that, game files remain encrypted with another encryption by the devs. For PSN stuff, when installing to the HDD, the PS3 decrypts it when installing. When backing up a PS3 HDD, it encrypts everything and decrypts it when restoring it back to the PS3.
by OrangeC at 6:50 AM EDT on August 23, 2010
Okay so wait PS jailbreak backup manager doesn't decrypt the game while backing up to internal PS3 HD or external Hard drive?

I heard also it copies file by file instead of an iso, so thats a sign o decryption? i would of thought since ps jailbreak tricsk the ps3 into thinking its a debug console then it should decrypt the games files as its dumping?

correct?
by bxaimc at 7:27 AM EDT on August 23, 2010
Would be interesting to get one and try it out but there's news going around that Sony will ban your console if you use this.
by OrangeC at 8:14 AM EDT on August 23, 2010
That's why im not going to update :) or go online
by OrangeC at 1:42 PM EDT on August 23, 2010
Okay well i found out more info from ps3 news

Yeah - the disk layer of encryption has been stripped (the PS3 does it natively) however the actual SELF layer of encryption is still on the EBOOT.BIN.

So far were good to go :)
by snakemeat at 8:50 PM EDT on August 23, 2010
seems like jailbreak dumps are beginning to spread.
by OrangeC at 10:44 PM EDT on August 23, 2010
Hopefully someone uploads thme toa filehosting site, im real itchy to get my hands on a derypted game.

also about ps3's codec

The PlayStation3 game Race Driver: Grid uses 224 simultaneous streams of ATRAC3 compressed audio, with between one and eight channels per stream at sample rates between 24 and 48 KHz, each filtered using 512 frequency bands of adaptive equalisation, routed via six reverb units running on the same SPU co-processor (one of eight on the PS3's Cell chip), alongside 7.1 channel hybrid third-order Ambisonic mixing.[6]
by bxaimc at 11:28 PM EDT on August 23, 2010
I think only a handfull of games on PS3 use ATRAC3 as its main codec. Most might just be PCM.
by OrangeC at 12:22 AM EDT on August 24, 2010
Hmm well great then :D
by nothingtosay at 4:25 AM EDT on August 24, 2010
Oh hell, I hope they do use something as simple as PCM. I guess (with my puny knowledge compared to almost everyone else here) it would make sense to do that, since they have so much space on the disc and it normally goes unused, you could leave the audio uncompressed and the processor wouldn't have to work as hard at playing it as music it'd have to decompress. I figured since they're only just now able to be dumped, it'd take a long time before we'll be able to play music ripped from the games. Let's all cross our fingers that the format is something simple and we'll all be able to listen to PS3 streamed audio soon.
by Franpa at 6:35 AM EDT on August 24, 2010
There is a downside to PCM, it can and will, increase load times.
by OrangeC at 6:39 AM EDT on August 24, 2010
We Also how to figure out that atrac variant assuming its much different then its psp coutnerpart, oh the joy and excitement is consumingme!! i must have this stick, i have three games that i could dump.

God of war 3
Full auto 2
Heavy rain
by SmartOne at 2:01 PM EDT on August 24, 2010
Little Big Planet lacks a true CD soundtrack. It's only iTunes junk, so I look forward to that.
by OrangeC at 4:48 PM EDT on August 24, 2010
I am downloading now virtual fighters ps3 dump to inspect the codec ;)

Will report as soon as i take a look.
by bxaimc at 5:44 PM EDT on August 24, 2010
Virtua Fighter is most likey ADX. BTW, current dumps before PS Jailbreak will not work and are useless because of course, they were dumped using the OtherOS feature on the PS3 (now gone).

@Franpa: it also depends on the quality of the game engine.

Yes bxmiac i am ware of the earlier dumps.

I also have a feeling it might use the devs propietery codec, however doesn't hurt to take a peak ;)

EDIT; Mw1 is heing upped to the same place im downloading virtual fighters, that def should use a ps3 codec or pcm as on pc mp3 360 xma. so ps3 hint hint ;D

Look at what manakoAT ripped ;)
btw where are you downloading VF from?
by OrangeC at 6:33 PM EDT on August 24, 2010
http://www.ps3sos.com/forumdisplay.php?8-PS3SOS

here.

got it downloaded but for some reason the data inside the USDIR folder looks encrypted still even the txt files.

somethings not right could be a bad dump or something?

i cant play the adx files either.

EDIT: apparently VF5 it doesn't even appear to be a Jailbreak dump as it says TEST and it doesn't have a jailbreak tab next to it, just says: test.

edited 6:43 PM EDT August 24, 2010

EDIT: yep improper scene dump by otherOS. Strangley it works in jailbreak manager.

Damn, read up somewhere and apparently MGS4 uses the same stupid .dat archives that they used in MGS3 - the dat's weren't the problem but what's inside was; MGS3 used some sort of proprietary audio codec, and I just hope that MGS4 doesn't...

Also, the Sony games seem to use some sort of gigantic archive for game data - Uncharted 2 and Resistance FOM both contain archives that exceed 4 GB. And we thought they'd go easy on us - I guess they're too paranoid to put out isolated game files even with the encryption.
by Hotcakes at 8:30 PM EDT on August 24, 2010
HOLY CRAP JESUS ON A STICK that was fast! Manako you crazy bastard. I was NOT expecting such a short turn around on the first game.

@Orange: not all games are decrypted properly. Some games reported to not be working (such as COD4) still have encrypted files after copying - this may or may not be why it doesn't work.

@pietastesgood: Usually it's not so much about keeping the files hidden, it is more about drive seek speed - if the files are separated the drive has to skip back and forth from the TOC to the file, for every file it reads. If everything is in one file the seeking is at least halved.

Also, any of the games that have files >4GB in size probably can't be ripped, since I don't think anyone has access to files on the PS partition and FAT32 of course doesn't support them. Would have been nice if the backup manager at least truncated the large files, but oh well early days yet.

Man oh man. I can't wait for Katamari Forever and Folklore. But they are so niche... maybe I should buy a stick and dump it myself :/
by OrangeC at 8:49 PM EDT on August 24, 2010
I seriously want a full auto 2 dump its not a big game but the score is a blast!!
by bxaimc at 9:46 PM EDT on August 24, 2010
I read the credits on Katamari Forever and saw licensing from Polycom for Siren14.
by Hotcakes at 2:51 AM EDT on August 25, 2010
OK. So is that an indifferent or bad thing for me :) According to wiki, FreeSWITCH (open source) has Siren 14 support... :)

A little surprising actually, I figured they'd have used a .npsf-similar thing again.
by hcs at 4:46 AM EDT on August 25, 2010
That's what's used in Muscle March and Tales of Graces. And vgmstream supports it (probably).

Manako has started work on a LittleBigPlanet rip for those interested. It's a WIP but it's available on the tracker.
by Mouser X at 11:55 PM EDT on August 28, 2010
From what I recall, it's a WIP because it's a format manokoAT isn't entirely familiar with. I think he "passed it off" to someone else. Thus, although the WIP is on the tracker, I don't know if it would be very useful to anyone yet. Maybe VGMstream just needs to be updated to support it, or maybe it requires a re-rip (and thus downloading it might be a waste of bandwidth). Either way, yes, the WIP is available. I just figured a small explanation/word-of-warning might useful to some people. Mouser X over and out.
by punk7890 at 11:57 PM EDT on August 28, 2010
Hmm. So I'm guessing you need a Jailbreak PS3 in order to dump the games? I would dump some if its as easy as buying that USB thingy.
by OrangeC at 8:31 AM EDT on August 29, 2010
@mouserx do you know what the format looks like?

can samples be posted?

Sony reacts to the 'PS3 Jailbreak':

http://kotaku.com/5623505/sony-temporarily-blocks-sale-of-ps3-modchips

I don't know about the rest of you, but I think it's time to order one of these, before it's too late...
by OrangeC at 12:58 PM EDT on August 29, 2010
That's not going to go through at all really, ps jailbreak has no sony code hence they can't perm ban the sale.

besides the damage has been done clones are being developed and china is already selling them.
by bxaimc at 1:47 PM EDT on August 29, 2010
The backup manager does have some sony code in it due the usage of the SDK.

by Hotcakes at 6:58 PM EDT on August 29, 2010
OrangeC is right, most likely. Sale/import of modchips themselves are not technically illegal in Australia. The Backup Manager can be taken down but the second that happens it will become cloud-ware. You know... found everywhere, hosted nowhere.

The funniest bit is where they were given the right to confiscate all stock in the retailers possession. If there hadn't been a week delay, that would have been a lot of stock! As it stands, it's just the 'sample' sticks they were given. Very fortunate.

Little Big Planet:
Could vgmstream decode the FSBs directly and play the MP3's together that are part of multi-channel tracks?

3*2 channel, 44100 Hz, 160 kbps MP3 > 2 channel, DRM, iTunes AAC (I think.)
by manakoAT at 12:54 PM EDT on August 30, 2010
Posted by snakemeat:
fsb_mp3g.exe .bat file to convert Little Big Planet: http://pastebin.com/s8iuCA1N , thanks for the info hcs (and your well known tool)

160 kbps MP3. Who the heck makes these decisions? Is it still 1995?

50 GB.

And correction to my above post:
6*2 channels

by bxaimc at 10:32 PM EDT on September 5, 2010
It only supports stereo, 44khz at3. PS3 stuff is 48khz and possibly multichannel.
by OrangeC at 10:34 PM EDT on September 5, 2010
hmm guess this at3 needs another decoder then.

XMPlay has a plugin that decodes RealAudio ATRAC3. Don't know if that could be made to work.
by OrangeC at 2:16 PM EDT on September 6, 2010
What i did was change the sample rate in the header to 44hz and it worked with the psp decoder, the problem still remains with multichannel files now.
by bxaimc at 2:59 PM EDT on September 6, 2010
So far out of the games I've checked, the following use ATRAC3 for their main bgm codec:

Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice
Devil May Cry 4
Demon's Souls

I'm bound to run into more :/
by Polokus at 3:09 PM EDT on September 6, 2010
when's the plugin extractor going to be released? I need it now man.
by pietastesgood at 3:19 PM EDT on September 6, 2010
It looks as though Capcom PS3 games use this ATRAC3 variant, and since most Capcom games have at least one or two surround tracks...

Hopefully something easy. I cannot check for myself.

bxaimc, just curious, but do you have the dumper? I haven't actually seen Ridge Racer 7 anywhere on the webs.
by bxaimc at 10:06 PM EDT on September 6, 2010
Maybe I do, maybe I don't ;)

I'll check Bad Company 2 and Assassins Creed 2 soon and possibly FFXIII if I have time although that one is really easy to extract data from. I think RR7 might be multichannel if not lossless.

PS Jailbreak has been reverse engineered and it has been possible to build your own for about a week now (and PS Jailbreak or clones have not yet shipped). There is also a working port for the Nokia N900 and other platforms (PSP/iPhone/Android/possibly even SIXAXIS) in various stages of development.

Nice thread!

I grabbed a few bgm files off the Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds disc. They have a .sgb file extension, something I've never seen before. Opening one up in a hex editor didn't help either.

If someone wants to check this format out, I uploaded one of the files to Dropbox here.

seems to be some propietery codec for the game, have no clue what it is though.
