Eternal Sonata .cxs sound files by NecessAndAry at 5:28 AM EST on January 19, 2011
Download: http://www.mirrorcreator.com/files/00IN9QLI/Files___spec.rar_links

I found some (short?) audio clips in ES, they are in the
same directory with .wav files that have their endianess changed, so I
guess they are uncompressed too (also has "large" blocks of 0x00 in it)

Strangely these files (at least at the header) don't have their endianess changed.

The format seems straight forward, but I have no experience with audio.
(that means that the file spec included could be garbage )
So do I just need to slap a custom written wav header instead of the current header
(please supply and tell what the values are)
or does it use some sort of lossy compression?

If it helps: The above mentioned wav files (NOT the files in the download) are PCM S16 LE (araw),stereo, with 48 kHz and 16 Bits per Sample. (Information from VLC Media Player)

Bonus Question: Is there a compression that starts with a specific symbol like 0xff ? (not related to the audio files)

This is XMA. There should be a 360 rip around but I've ripped the PS3 version as well which has PCM and PS ADPCM and is supported by vgmstream. (It's on the tracker). BTW, CXS is supported by ToWav.

ToWav

I found a link to a Russian site. :-U
http://7ba.ru/ex/showfile/33012/
Is there an official site for the tool? (or forum or whatever) cause Google hates me (apparently)

EDIT: Oh DX SDK? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-platform_Audio_Creation_Tool#XACT_Sound_Creation_Features
have to look into it (... later)

OT: I'm also looking for some tech docs for as many as possible file formats (I know xentax and hitmen already).
Got a tip?

OT2: Do you know if any files are compressed or encrypted in the PS3 iso? Cause in the 360 version everything except the sound files is compressed or encrypted. (and there are even two compression formats -.-)

I think this is as close as there is to an official site for ToWav: http://www.ctpax-x.ru/index.php?goto=files&show=24

For a lot of specs try MultimediaWiki and Wotsit.
And trawl through vgmstream's and ffmpeg's readers for a while :)

1. XACT won't help you with jack.
2. I'm not sure. I don't care about anything on the PS3 other than vids and music. And no, the music wasn't encrypted/compressed either but they were in an archive iirc.
3. as hcs mentioned, vgmstream IS THE BEST library for game audio formats and playback. I don't see any other library that can handle as many more formats than we've added and a lot of the work on figuring out everything is done via IRC, rather than a forum like xentax ;)
