Accurate GBS to WAV by andrew_berge at 12:13 PM EDT on April 4, 2011
Okay, i'll start by saying hello, i'm andrew_berge, i run Windows 7 64-bit, and this is my first post here, so please forgive me if i do something wrong (I couldn't find a rules thread, is there one?).
I stumbled upon this site by chance, and i think you could help me with my endeavour.

I'm currently trying to rip the audio from a GBS file, Link's Awakening DX, to wav files.
I've tried a few standalone applications and plugins, such as Audio Overload (It froze when trying to record anything but the first track) and a dll for Winamp (it muted a track in Tal Tal Heights, i'm not sure what it might have changed in all the others).

I'm going to try booting into Ubuntu and see if Audio Overload performs any better, so i'll see how that goes.

But i was hoping you guys might be able to help me out if that doesn't work. Any tips?

For .gbs music I recommend using Foobar2000 with the latest foo_gep plugin. Or Winamp with the latest NEZplug++ plugin. Make sure it's the ++ version (last update is February 2011) and not the old ass NEZplug.
by andrew_berge at 1:15 PM EDT on April 4, 2011
Okay, i'll give it a shot. Thanks!
by KGN-004 at 1:27 PM EDT on April 4, 2011
I actually recommend foo_gep much more than NEZplug++ for gbs. NEZplug++ seems to have more popping/clicking going on sometimes. I suppose that's actually more accurate to how it sounds on the real hardware. I'm certainly no expert, and I no longer have said hardware. *shrugs* So just try out both plugins and decide for yourself.

Use NEZplug++ for the vast majority of.nsf, though.
by KGN-004 at 2:19 PM EDT on April 4, 2011
I have a question for the more knowledgeable here. What .nsf does NEZplug++ SERIOUSLY fail at playing reasonably accurate?

The only one I've noticed so far is "Gimmick!". There seems to be missing channels sometimes, or they are almost completely drowned out by other ones.

Are there any other .nsf where I should use something besides NEZplug++?
by andrew_berge at 5:28 PM EDT on April 4, 2011
Looks like i'll be using Foobar. It's giving me nice results so far.

Thanks again.

Not one player is correct.

Newer builds of nezplug++ and notsofatso are fine for officially released games. Things start to fail badly with the addition of expansion chips (the mix of them all) in games, and in homebrew material. Famicompo from 2008 and forward are great examples of where nezplug++ fails. SPECIALLY sample offset manipulation (B00daw, Strobe, basically the botb community). Modshrines probe nezplug++ fails badly as well at expansion chips such as FDS, VRC6, FME-7, and N106 chips. (xaimus's tunes).

For games, again, either plugin is "fine" (they all have their faults given the new findings of emulation (chibitech mentioning all implementations of N106 are incorrect all these years, leaving all tunes assambled to this day nonplayable on hardware or with badly sound glitches on reproduction)

Have a nice day!

Let me rephrase the question:

Are there any more SPECIFIC OFFICIAL release games where NEZplug++'s current emulation is HIGHLY unacceptable? Such as many tracks in "Gimmick!"?

I'm in the midst of transcoding a bunch of nsf to MP3, and I want the currently most accurate representation of the nsf.

NEZplug++ sounds the best for everything I've tried so far; except Gimmick!

I've actually listened to all 1700+ nsf in the HCS archive about four times over. The thing is, most of these games I'm transcoding I've never played before and don't know how they are suppose to sound.

If I hadn't tried playing Gimmick in FCEUX (which obviously has worse sound emulation overall), I wouldn't have noticed the missing/drowned channels in NEZplug++, and would have used it for a bad sounding transcode. I used foo_gep, which didn't have this problem. But it also doesn't have the richness of the Sunsoft bass that NEZplug++ has.

Again, I ask you, what other games should I not use NEZplug++ for?
by KGN-004 at 10:31 PM EDT on April 6, 2011
Well most of them don't matter. The reason for going through them all systematically multiple times was to pick out what I thought to be the top 300 NES soundtracks. Here's that list. Tell me if you know if any of these don't sound right in NEZplug++. Also let me know if you disagree with my choices or omissions and why. ;)

Killer Instinct by ShadowMan81 at 5:46 PM EST on February 11, 2016
All I can find is a GBS file for Killer Instinct but it's all wrong, is there anywhere this might have a fixed rip?

It's a pretty popular title, I would have expected it to work.

Any help would be appreciated
by TheUltimateKoopa at 8:38 PM EST on February 12, 2016
Is it Killer Instinct or another game that has most of the tunes playing about 4 times as fast as they should?
Killer Instinct by ShadowMan81 at 2:40 PM EST on February 14, 2016
I think the timing is right. I don't recall the one that plays too fast but I've encountered it.

The typical problem is usually with GBS file the, um Triangle? I don't recall the term but whatever does the drums in the music usually is not like the game.

This is the case with Killer Instinct but also, the sounds are all wrong and come out only one speaker/headphone mostly.

I think the term you were thinking of is noise?
by ShadowMan81 at 1:35 PM EST on February 15, 2016
yeah I think so. It's been so long since I played around with that stuff.
