@punk7890-2: Ah, interesting! A VST, the Sound Canvas-88 again, and an orchestra-sample-thing...interesting.

If the samples were ripped from the game or that CDVDMAP file, it'd be cool, but one day I should consider getting the stuff the composers use! [s]My songs "The Nightlife" and "You're Under Arrest!" demonstrate how I handle Gigapack samples, anyways.[/s]

Still, thanks; I should've linked to some of the songs on YouTube but it's frustrating looking at my HCS64 thread about the game that only has my posts in it, so I just rushed the question here; It's dumb Graffiti Kingdom chose the SMD/SWD format.

Is it possible the beginning sound is being modulated, and based off the In da Cave sample? They sound fairly similar.

This is very true. Lots of the ubiquitous Roland samples you hear in the Sound Canvas series and other modules date back to the S-50 sampler which came out back in the 80s.

Game: Heartcatch Pretty Cure! Oshare Collection

The good news about the...beautiful SC-88 Fantasia samples in this game is that unlike Hamsterz Life and Shugo Chara, Bandai included more than one sample of the Fantasia and I can hear it souns more like the lower-end Fantasia that comes with Windows at lower octaves. Of course, this was added to my soundfont.

The trial only lasts 10 minutes, but if you close the trial and open it again, the clock resets, which gives you another 10 minutes. You can repeat this process in 14 days. I think you can uninstall it and install it again to continue using it for 14 days, but I haven't tried that.

Speaking of the Sound Canvas VST, does anyone know how in the world do you set the percussion instruments to midi tracks? It only uses channel 10 for midi drums by default which sucks because what if I have a midi that has the percussion notes on another channel other than 10? How can I set the percussion instruments to play on other midi tracks that have them? This things been bugging me for months ever since I bought it lol appreciate the help wherever it comes from. :P
by Ghignarda at 1:23 AM EDT on October 16, 2016
@dj4uk6cjm:

I think it depends on the DAW you're using. At least in Logic, you are able to change the midi channels of different tracks through the inspector.
by dj4uk6cjm at 1:35 AM EDT on October 16, 2016
Ah I see, well I use Mixcraft and I think it's dependent on the VST end to change the channels or either it's not outputting them right for me because I did once before try to just move and change a percussion track from 1 channel to 10 and the VST still didn't play it with percussion instruments by default so I honestly don't know what I'm doing wrong.

@G-Boy Fld and Fldata look the same, a long hexadecimal number (a hash or something?)

I'm not sure what deleting it'd do or if someone'd find out what it did then set the remaining trial time to something like many years into the future.

For example, my registry (Computer\HKEY_USERS\S-1-lots of numbers)\SOFTWARE\Roland\Activator\SC-VA\FldData is "8a30076a9fe1050ef2d43bbfb121799089f7d7cbe1e1bba570b3bfe3bf9961d5"; That's definitely a hash of some kind. It might be SHA256.

where this snare drum comes from?

im want to know where the snare drum comes from(the link i leaved before is a sonic advance 3 music track, the snare sound is a little bit quiet)

its used in the storm eagle stage in megaman x,
and a similar sound can be heared in fulgore's theme (original 1994 killer instinct (arcade version)) there is an another example (check at 00.20)

its also used in sonic battlethere is an another example

(by the way, the crash cymbal sound reminds me of a crash cymbal from an e-mu proteus drum library(maybe e-mu proteus series)which i have a sample of it, i dont know exactly where it originates from, i recorded that sound with the proteus vx free vst and lmms(i searched here, but i didint found it,i think))

i love that snare drum a i would love to use that sound in my "compositions",
but i dont know where it originates from, so please help me identify that snare drum.

I downloaded the Sonic Advance 3 ROM and tried to find the song with the snare that you linked, but it's very hard to find, and I gave up because the music from that game hurted my ears so much (I use headphones). Maybe I'll continue searching for it in the future. I'm not sure if that snare is sampled, it could be a PSG sound (8-bit).

i am sorry for your ears(and your heardphones), and its a lot easier if you downlad a soundfont (here is a place you can found one, look at the description),this one is organised and a lot easier to find instruments, if you use this,the snare sound im talking about should be included in the drumkit 2.

i dont think is a psg generated sound, its also used in other games(even in higher quality),and would be complicated to program a complex sound like this, as i mentioned before,look up for my previous post, should be an example of other games that uses that sound(megaman x and killer instinct)

also, i listened some songs that uses that sound(which i dont remember the names)

Sonic Advance 3 Drums by Xane123 at 3:51 PM EDT on October 17, 2016
Here's the "preset" used by the Sonic Advance 3 boss music; The snare drums are on the middle octaves and the drum is a sample.

Also, back on page 32, Can of Nothing linked to one of my old videos about Roland's--as I'd say back then, "crappy General MIDI samples", the SM64 Music Box, which really does sound like the Sound Canvas music box, the same one that seemingly appeared in Sonic Adventure's extra life sound.

I tried that sf2 that Xane linked and only managed to find this snare. It is from a Roland JV-1080, though I got this from one of my Roland Sxx CD's. I have a ton of other Roland snares but its hard to tell because of the quality of those samples. It sort of sounds like its from some spliced up sample that you would get in a loop sample pack or something similar.

punk7890-2, thanks.

ill'check that out.

and i want to say 3 things;

1 i linked 2 times some other music tracks as example of that sound,look in my first post.
example 2 is megaman x storm eagle, the 3rd example is fugore s' theme in the original killer instinct.

2 i have a vst made by e-mu that includes some sounds that are begin used in some games, like the crash cymbal in sonic advance 3, its freeware.
if you want to qive it a shot, its here

3 the tread i mentioned in my first post refers to megaman x and ff7, sorry, i had to mention it

also, i have a 2,7gb(i think)sample pack of a lot of drum machines, i am too lazy to search into every file folder of this collection.
i had to donate 4$ (you can donate less that 4$) total to have every sound plus some extra.
here is the site

if you donate with paypal, your account attached with your donation recives a mail that gives you a pass for a secret zone of the site.

i searched a little bit, but i would love to have a list of drum machines that shows the ones that came out in the 90s, so it would be easier to search.

@punk7890-2
What's a high layer? Maybe this is a stupid question.
by henke37 at 12:35 PM EDT on October 24, 2016
Layers are samples that are played on top of each other. For example, one for the main sound and another for some mechanical noise. Or maybe just additional harmonies at high velocities.

@henke37
Yes, I know what a "layer" means, but I don't know what a "high layer" means.
by punk7890-2 at 4:43 PM EDT on October 24, 2016
What I meant is its a sample at a higher octave. Maybe somewhere around G6. Certain samples are spread across certain ranges and this is from a higher range.
by icecream at 9:51 AM EDT on October 27, 2016
Because I think it's relevant to this thread: my friend asked Gō Ichinose about his hardware use in HeartGold and SoulSilver and he has directly confirmed that he used an SD-90 for the games.
https://twitter.com/GoIchinose/status/791246812975816704
This basically also confirms that this is precisely what he used for the FRLG drums.

Now my question is about the "other hardware" he says he used and to what extent he used this other hardware as well as the SD-90. Stuff like the trumpet, synth bass, and orchestral cymbal are definitely from VSTi's that we have found, though not every instrument was from a VSTi. And now it's completely up in the air what hardware they used (outside of the SC-88, most apparent in the choirs), though it's slightly implied to not be Fantom as he also asked about that and didn't get direct confirmation of Fantom use in the game. There's also the question if he has used the SD-90 or this "other hardware" beyond HeartGold and SoulSilver (mainly in Black 2 and White 2 as he led music during those games as well and we don't know a lot of the samples' origins though VST's again definitely were used, such as Stylus and Addictive Drums), or even before in Diamond and Pearl, because there are a lot of samples in those games thought to be SC-88 or Hyper Canvas that we recently found are clearly not (most notably the piano, which is actually EWQL Colossus/Goliath).

I *think* the ocarina sound in OOT is from E-mu ... here's my attempt at "Epona's Song" using Creative Lab's 8MBGSFX E-mu rev b soundfont ... it's very close, though the sound in-game is more present in the higher frequencies ... this suggests either that samples were pre-equalized so as to compensate for the lower sample-rate and the frequency response of tv speakers upon playback, or (most likely) that the Creative soundfont is of a lower sample-rate and high frequency content is therefore attenuated ... anyway have a listen and see what you think

The reason why I haven't posted sample CD discoveries is because I still don't know how to use sample CDs... I really tried to make the Kurzweil Gigapack work, but I didn't find any simple explanations of it on the internet, so I gave up. The reason why I posted Roland Sound Canvas discoveries is because I had the trial version, but the trial has come to a close now, so I can't use it anymore. The source is what we want first. The port to sample cd would be the extra nice thing to have.

Does anyone know where the violin from Moo Moo Farm comes from? I recognized it from something while I was watching a video, but I don't know what. Someobody said that the Mario Kart 64 soundtrack was made with an SC-88.

@palo_alto

I believe the resident evil sound is actually from a roland jv1080 or 2080, i think it part of the GM set from it.

Mostly that and the dualshock (Which is poorly composed) use presets from those synthesizers, i do think there is similar sounds from the Sound Canvas VA.

You basically have to try all of these programs if the first one you try doesn't work for a sample CD:
- CDXtract
- Extreme Sample Converter (doesn't support Kurzweil)
- Awave Studio
- Chicken Systems Translator
- Kontakt

And also, if one of them ever refuses to read a disk image, try mounting it first. To this day I haven't found a single CD that at least one of them couldn't open somehow.

It's a lot, yeah, but it just may be worth it in the end.

@palo_alto Nice find on he OoT ocarina! But @peronmls scared the poor guy away! (Just joking lol).

@G-Boy Mario Kart 64's instruments are 98% SC-88. That instrument is the Fiddle, not the violin. I got mixed up before myself. Here is a remastered version of the song I did awhile ago. I should get around to finishing all the songs in that game.
by Jasper at 3:52 AM EDT on November 1, 2016
I'm quite sure the redead scream is a stock sound effect. You can also find it here:

https://youtu.be/-NMFFFqG1Kk?t=15

I'm sure if you spent some time on https://soundeffects.sounddogs.com/ you could find it on there somewhere.
Remastering a Fiddle by G-Boy at 4:55 AM EDT on November 1, 2016
@punk7890-2
One of my own keyboards (the Casio CTK-573) has many samples from the Roland SC-88, so maybe that's where I recognized the Fiddle sample from (I can't tell the difference between a violin and a fiddle).

BTW, I found and downloaded your remastered version of the Kart Select theme yesterday, how many songs from Mario Kart 64 did you remaster? And how did you remaster them (the reason why I'm asking this is because I want to remaster the Bowser's Inside Story soundtrack)?

I think it was used in Smosh too.

Does anyone know where the instruments used in the Overworld (SMB) theme from Super Mario All-Stars comes from? I already know the Steel Drum comes from a Roland sound library.

neither im afraid. I also remember looking though the WAV version of Premier 1-7. I could have looked over it.

Since it was on the Brak album, my vote would be to try to find a copy of the Turner Entertainment collections. I know they had distribution in Japan, and Cartoon Network was on such low-budget at the time they probably reused in-house sounds.

Does anyone know where the saxophone sample from Wii Music comes from?

E3 Demonstration
by PokeMusic at 2:07 PM EDT on November 4, 2016
@G-Boy the saxophone could be from Logic Pro, Nintendo uses that DAW a lot for the music, it could also be a Sound Canvas or Fantom/Triton/Motif/some other ROMpler. Toru Minegishi, Kenta Nagata and Mahito Yokota composed for Wii Music so if you look them up in the forum, you could find out what they have and might have used,

Steel drums sound a lot like my CTK-6200 Casio (Steel Drums 1 or Steel Drums GM set) with a bit of vibrato added. Could also be a Sound Canvas (my Casio has the same steel drums from Super Mario World). It sounds like a modulation effect was applied using a modulation wheel. The composers are Kenta Nagata, Toru Minegishi, Shinobu Tanaka, and Kazumi Totaka, so you can find out what gear they have.

Casio CTK by G-Boy at 6:56 AM EDT on November 5, 2016
@PokeMusic
Sorry, this is off-topic, but my Casio CTK-573 has many instruments that was used in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. Yoko Shimomura used a Roland SC-88 for that game, so I think my Casio's samples are from the Roland Sound Canvas. But the Steel Drums are actually one of the few instruments on my keyboard that doesn't come from a Roland Sound Canvas...

Here's a demo of a different Casio keyboard with the same instruments as mine.

BTW, my keyboard also has the French Horn sample that was used in "Miles Edgeworth ~ Great Revival" and the Brass sample that was used in "Victor Kudo ~ A Painful Declaration, and a War Song". Both samples were used in the demo.

by Master_E at 11:38 PM EDT on November 5, 2016
All this talk of Phoenix Wright makes me want to inquire about the ubiquitous synth stabs that are at the beginning of the Pursuit themes for the first 3 games.

At first glance, it sounds like the stab in the 3rd game (Trials and Tribulations) sounds duller than the one used in 1 and 2. But fundamentally the sound is the same.

But perhaps a bigger question is why they didn't continue using such an iconic instrument after they were afforded more space with Apollo Justice and onward?

Anyway, it'd be nice to hear the sample without all the compression.
by G-Boy at 10:02 AM EST on November 6, 2016
@Master_E

I ripped a soundfont of that sample:

http://download948.mediafire.com/tn4ccm4c23qg/ta7b9mvafhl4flu/SynthStabFont.sf2

I thought it could help, even if it's still compressed.

Doesn't sound familiar to me. =/ Trust me. You'll eventually find it. I was like that with a few samples. I eventually found them. There is still one more sample to this day I haven't found though. =/ I don't expect anyone to find it either. More likely nisto and I will. ...maybe

Did you try finding a video on Roland BOSS DR660 patches? It could be from there as that game used a lot of samples from that like I mentioned before.
by peronmls at 9:27 AM EST on November 10, 2016
the one at 4:18 sounds like it.
