That honestly just sounds like the bandoneon from one of Roland's older synths, either the SC-88 or JV.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBvUH48bY_I

I'm really curious where the bells at 0:28 are from, as well as the orchestra hit throughout the song.

has anyone heard this SFX slam in any library at all?

I hear it in video games and other videos. I NEED IT.
Listen to the Sound Canvas VA's samples! by Xane123 at 1:53 PM EST on November 11, 2016
It may be out of date now, but I just tried this!

@G-Boy: With Audacity, you can open SCCore.dll as a raw sound with settings like 16-bit mono PCM / 16000kHz and you'll hear random samples from the VA without using it; You may still be able to identify samples this way!

@peronmls No idea, sorry. It reminds me of that awesome slam/metal-ish sound in the SF64 opening credits song. Really want to know where that comes from. The same thing is heard in Winback opening credits as well.

Yes, someone finally managed to get some kind of sound from the GBA version of DKC1. I do need help with identifying where this guitar riff came from, and by the way, both the Funky's Flights (Funky's Fugue) and the fishing mini game (Funky Fishers!) music use this sample at different pitches.

@G-Boy: Ah, it is random noises but some sound like the 'ol tinny-sounding Sound Canvas samples that I dread hearing in games but some of them...the SC-88 must have a lot of cool samples like those voices that remind me of New Super Mario Bros. U's baby Yoshi singing.

It sounds like what soundfonts sound like when you open one as raw audio, which gives me the idea that someone should make a SCCore.dll to .sf2 converter or something.

I can't hear that pretty Fantasia this way, though, but I know 10 minutes is nothing with how many "new" samples there are!

I discover the sync sound when i ask grant kirkhope about it, at least he answered in the email and i give him and norgate credit for helping me find some of the sounds from the rare games.

by PokeMusic at 7:34 AM EST on November 25, 2016
@dj4uk6cjm Someone said its a Yamaha PSS-31. That has similar sound ware to TG/SY series by Yamaha so maybe the TG/SY series.

Also
Pokemon Sun and Moon has some good music. You should check the origin of the sounds. Now they added someone named Tomoaki Oga to the sound team. Maybe he is from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games.

Thanks PokeMusic, is there a soundfont for the Yamaha PSS-31? I have a Yamaha PSR-E223 keyboard but last time I checked it didn't have those sounds and speaking of Pokemon Sun & Moon I love the music in the game too!! Anyone know where the instruments from Team Skull's theme comes from? Mainly the vocal samples, would really appreciate it. Thanks!
by PokeMusic at 3:27 PM EST on November 26, 2016
As I said it's similar to stuff like the SY77/SY99/TG33/TG55 (but closest is to the TG). So maybe you can find a sound font of that or the PSS. I also wonder the source of the vocal samples in Team Skulls music, but I think they recorded it themselves. But I wonder about the source of many of the synth tones and ethnic instruments. The ethnic instruments could be from Ethno World and the synths from Nexus and Omnisphere and HALion to name a few. It would be neat to see the presets they have been using.

The CD Shop That Koji Kondo Loves! by G-Boy at 9:27 AM EST on November 30, 2016
I found this from an interview with Koji Kondo:

"Towards the end of Ocarina of Time, there’s [even] something that sounds like chanting… it’s an intense piece. (I think they're talking about the uncensored version of the Fire Temple theme or the Shadow Temple theme)

Kondo: I had wanted to do a song like that for a really long time. I recently found a CD shop where you can try out and listen to the CDs before buying, and I’ve been spending a lot of time in their folk music corner. I’ve been able to hear tons of things I’ve never heard before. I go there a lot!"

It looks like Koji Kondo tried out and bought the Best Service Voice Spectral Vol. 1 sample CD from a Japanese CD shop. Maybe he used the CDs in that shop for other soundtracks too?

The Abandoned Megamart theme from Pokemon Sun and Moon uses the same accordion as Professor Sycamore's theme. Go Ichinose also returns, he wrote Gladion's theme, which I wonder where the slap bass comes from (maybe Trillian). Also, has anyone been checking for presets used in Pokemon Sun and Moon (especially that organ-like synth lead/arp in the There's trouble music composed by Tomoaki Oga, as well as the sync lead from the ultra beasts battle, which was composed by Go Ichinose).

I'm trying to identify what sounds are used in Gunvolt soundtracks. They are pretty much made by the same teams of musicians a Rockman Zero/ZX, with Ippo Yamada leading it.

Here are crapload of different songs:

Gunvolt 1/2:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiFBczog_lA

I went through Synthmania's many demos but still can't figure it out. I doubt they all come from one source, but still.
Thanks for any help.

In other news. Chikayo Fukuda, composer for CC2's games such as .hack//g.u. uses a lot of EAST WEST sample libraries. I found this out long ago actually, but I never posted. In any case.
The Naruto games by CC2, composed by her use crapload of EWQL orchestra. So here's a general list of things I caught her using over different titles:
EWQL Symphonic Orchestra Gold or Better (it might be platinum)
EWQL Ra for the Shakuhachi, though they are also in the EWQL Goliath, so they might be just from that.
EWQL Goliath? The guitars she often used in G.U, are there. Though they from an old GIGA and AKAI sample library whose name now escapes me.
EWQL Stormdrum, both Kompakt and Intakt
EWQL Percussive Adventures
EWQL Percussive Adventures 2
Spectrasonics Omnisphere, or the old AKAI libraries such as Metamorphosis and Distorted Reality.
Stylus RMX, or like with the above.
Chemical Beats

I haven't discovered everything, but since some time ago, this is a lot of what she uses. Especially the EWQL orchestra stuff.
by Ghignarda at 6:20 AM EST on December 12, 2016
I was wondering if somebody could do me the hugest of favours. I don't know if this is the section for it, but...

Would anybody be able to use N64MidiTool or the one of the Sound tools to rip the samples/midis from Mario Artist: Paint Studio? I use a Mac and run Parallels for Windows stuff, but I haven't had any luck getting either programs working.
by icecream at 9:36 AM EST on December 12, 2016
@Kharaxel: Do you have any preset names for instruments she used from any of those VSTs in those games? And if you can remember what sample library the guitars in Goliath come from (if any) that would be great.
by vajuvaju at 1:45 PM EST on December 12, 2016
@Ghignarda

Mario Artist is not listed on the support lists for any of the N64 tools. You should contact SubDrag or post on the N64 Midi Tool page.
by Ghignarda at 4:00 PM EST on December 12, 2016
Unless I'm mistaken, it is listed under its ID number, DMPJ. I'll do that though, thanks.
by Kharaxel at 5:24 PM EST on December 12, 2016
@icecream
I refound the name of the Chikayo Fukuda guitars.
EastWest Quantum Leap Guitar and Bass
This is the sample library. It's kinda crazy because I think she actually uses them to this day.
I mostly think she uses the ones from the rock cathegory.

As for individual presets... I believe it would be too many to list. Her orchestral stuff since quite a bit of time ago, is just EWQLSO. For example the Solatorobo Perfect Soundtrack, you know, the one with remastered music to sound decent, is done with EWQLSO.
Same for Naruto and shit. If I focused on writing down specific presets, I would go insane.
Though, to this day, i never found out where that specific ethnic arpeggiated sound comes from. The one that plays in this song for example:

Look like i find a goldeneye sample, i heard this in one of the muitiplayer tracks.

I'm hoping to find the origin of the flutes in the Rune Factory DS games (the Lufia DS game and Egg Monster Hero also use some of the same samples). I think Tomoko Morita and Yukio Nakajima worked with these samples so contacting them might be helpful to find their origin.

Here are a few examples:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4x5KOni69HI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkiwqyZkyC0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyJMLooaXCo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyJMLooaXCo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5wt8FOHneE

You could rip the samples using VGMTrans, but the quality is bad and there's a lot of aliasing, so I would like to find the origin of those samples. (There's also around 3/4 flutes in the games, but they might be from the same source, so finding the source of any one of them would make me happy).

Thanks in advance!

The first 2 links have SC-88 recorders (the flute you are talking about) and guitars in them. The third link has the same guitars along with a timpani and a pan flute from a SC-88. Basically, everything you hear is from a SC-88.

Nobuo Uematsu's Synthesizers by G-Boy at 1:32 PM EST on December 16, 2016
I found this post about synthesizers that were used in SNES game music on reddit.

Some information from the post:

"[Nobuo Uematsu)'s been known to use E-MU and Kurzweil and Roland samples (especially in SNES Final Fantasy iterations. FF7's strings are literally a shortened Kurzweil, and FF8's strings are pretty much an unaltered rip of E-MU's signature strings)"

"Sony, who developed the soundchip for the SNES, provided a collection of samples to developers. I know for a fact that Top Gear's soundtrack was composed entirely with samples provided by Sony, and there may be several others. It's possible these samples didn't come from a rompler, like those you have mentioned, because Sony had (and still has) its own sound division, complete with a collection of instruments and synthesizers (not to be confused with romplers), used for creating sample CDs and system sounds."

"FF7's samples could have come from Sony but I actually did just find the hihats in a korg m1 sample bank!"

"Yeah Uematsu used the sc-88, a lot of samples I'm FF6 and chrono trigger were ripped right from the sc-88 too (timpani, oboe, trumpet, drums, etc)."

"So good news, I found the synth FF7 got a lot of its drum samples from. Turns out it was the Alesis D4, either that or the S4 since I'm assuming it could contain a lot of samples from the D4."

I also found this article that says Nobuo Uematsu used instruments from the Roland SC-55 and SC-88 in the most of his earlier material.

Could somebody point me in the right direction?

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iQWsGU7lA2Y

The mid register sound the plays at the beginning and through the rest of this song most prominently, playing D and then an octave up.

I was racking my brain, thinking it might be some rompler harp, but all harp romplers sound very tinny in comparison.

I'm thinking it might be some bell-like sound, but I'm really at a loss.

So not really looking for a definitive where it may come from, but just what sort of sound it could be classified as, to make it easier to find.

A Few Things I Noticed by naf4947 at 12:30 AM EST on December 27, 2016
Hey, I'm new to this forum but this is something I've been thinking about for years and noticed a few interesting things.

First, the drum loop at the very beginning of the Greenhouse track from Hotwheels Stunt Track Driver (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-wRkHjFo9o) is exactly the same as a drum loop from Glover (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gz-qt3BL9u8). I don't know their source but I do know they're the same.

Second, the drum fill at the very beginning of Bubbly Washing Machine from Super Monkey Ball 2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlPrvJx3epk) sounds extremely similar to the fill at the beginning of Shake It by Sistar, although that one is pretty processed (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9-TIy7WPQI). I don't know the source for these, or even if they are the same fill, but they sound close enough to me that it's possible.

And third, I have a Korg 01W soundfont and one of the patches called Animotion I know I've heard in a game somewhere before, but I can't remember the game. Here is a sample of what it sounds like, the rising scalar pattern is what I really feel like I remember from a game somewhere. (https://www.dropbox.com/s/kfcsep104mozj13/animotion.wav?dl=0)

I find more jv1080 samples, but this sample was used a lot in timesplitters which was composed by Graeme Norgate.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DmpUdpgUqU

The music box in the beginning is a preset call Childlike in the jv1080.

More Samples from the jv1080 it appears goldeneye tend to use the midi vibraphone a lot.

Look like Persona 1 have used some Korg M1 rather then Roland JV synth samples.

I find some sample that is in the M1 that actually a mix of the well known strings in the synthesizer.

It was confirmed in an interview with Yasunori Mitsuda that a sound module was used for the Chrono Trigger soundtrack, even if he didn't say the name of it. I bet it's the Roland SC-88.

The chants used in Chrono Trigger/Radical Dreamers came from Siedlaczek's Classical Choir.

The vox in Phantom Brave's "A Hole in Time Space" is likely a variant on the JV/XV patch "Jet Vox".

Paper Mario Thousand Year Door and SPM both seem to use an XV for a lot of base sounds and synths. It's crazy to think they got so much power out of their synths, they're very hard to recognise.

SPM and Sticker Star utilise some Hanna Barbera sfx sounds in their soundtracks as well, mixed either subtly or not-so-subtly.

I want to say that Super Mario Run is an Integra, just because some of the clavs sound like the SuperNatural ones, but they could easily be from an older model. sounds like the entire thing (not sure bout drums) is Roland.

I wonder which sample library the cello used in Gau's theme from Final Fantasy VI comes from? I know the classic nylon guitar comes from one of the Roland Sound Canvas models. I think I've heard the cello sample before... maybe in Ace Attorney?
by witapepsi at 3:22 PM EST on January 8, 2017
I just discovered this thread and it's so informative. I recently got a KORG TR-Rack and a Roland JV1080, mainly because Hideaki Kobayashi said he's used them (JV2080, technically) in the Phantasy Star Online soundtrack, along with Logic Pro.
Also, I don't think all of the patches are from those two synthesizers, as I've seen in here a couple sample libraries have been used as well. I wonder what else he hasn't mentioned...

I had no idea a ton of other games used them as well, some of them have been mentioned on here. I've heard some patches used in Sonic Adventure 2, Goldeneye 007, and Metal Gear Solid, to name a few.

I have a question about a clangy metal sound used in Mirror Image from Zero Divide 2.
I think it's the same sound used in Mining Melancholy from Donkey Kong Country 2?

Also, there's a choir pad used in The Inner Shrine from Tekken 4.
I think it's the same one in Aboveground Urban Area A from Shin Megami Tensei IV? Not sure, but they both sound really nice.

I'd like to find where those patches came from possibly might be the next synths I'll purchase when the day comes hehe

Does anyone have an idea of what David Bergeaud (Ratchet and Clank) used for his compositions?

The main focus being Deadlocked/Gladiator?

I was listening to the soundtrack today and heard similar samples in Yuki Kaijura's Sword Art Online ost. Obviously they share a common sample bank.

I'll post examples soon.
by ArcenyHax at 12:15 AM EST on January 10, 2017
Ratchet: Deadlocked OST - Valix Belt (Space Ace)

Sword Art Online- no way

The similar sound is the erratic e violin phrase. In Space Ace track it appears around 00:26 seconds.

Thoughts? Im thinking maybe one of the Spectrasonics products.

Honestly Ratchet and Clank is a goldmine of 90s-00 sounds. I wish I had the ability to recognize the proper sound modules/samples/synthesizers.

@witapepsi. Sound like he use a roland jv1080 and Emu Proteus fx mainly, i remember most of the instruments as they sound like low quality versions of the samples.
