Can anyone please help find instruments from Pokémon Sun and Moon? I'm looking more so for the synth sounds and the ethnic instruments, just so you know, there is some real guitar and drums on some tracks. Also, some of the synths sound like they were played on keyboards. It would be interesting to find out what Tomoaki Oga uses, though we know he uses Ethno World because I believe he composed the Apparel Shop theme.

@PokeMusic

As for synth instruments, search Omnisphere 1, Massive and UVI PlugSound Box / Pro, because those are confirmed to be in S/M. Maybe you will find more instruments?

And as for ethnic, Kena KEY from Ethno World was used in the Apparel Shop. Search in Best Service Ethno World, Kontakt Factory Library for more ethnic instruments.

Also I would suggest coming over to our Discord server, the people there might know more used stuff.

@G-Boy: what do you use to demo JV-1080 stuff? Is there a VST or something? I've long tried finding individual samples from it, but the search hasn't been too fruitful.
by G-Boy at 1:48 PM EDT on June 20, 2017
@Nisto
My JV-1080 module is connected to my PC with a MIDI and an audio cable, so I just need to open MIDI Out in FL Studio to play it.
by Nisto at 1:56 PM EDT on June 20, 2017
@G-Boy: ooh, you're lucky! Where did you manage to get a module from? It seems hard to find a good deal where you and I live (think we're in the same country?), since you either have to pay more than the module itself for the shipping, or pay some local crook an arm and a leg.
by G-Boy at 2:09 PM EDT on June 20, 2017
@Nisto
I got it from ebay.de for about 2000 kr, and it works perfectly, so I'm glad I bought it. The shipping cost was also very low.
by Enclave123 at 1:24 AM EDT on June 21, 2017
@G-Boy i recommend using the Jv1080 dashboard it easier to change presets. For some reason i cannot use my custom presets i tend to use midi out to change them.

I use it a lot to change my expansion board presets and mixed up on some volume issues.

I find it very useful when using FL Studio.

Can you translate this? It's the official title of Victor Kudo's theme from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations.

Okay, so it seems that sending a message to Can of Nothing on Discord turned out to be a somewhat frustrating disappointment due to him/her not answering... Does anyone else here have a KORG Trinity/Triton? (Anyone who sees this and/or replies to this thread, please respond ASAP)
by Nisto at 6:12 PM EDT on June 21, 2017
@G-Boy: the title has been translated on VGMdb already. The first part (五十嵐将兵 = Shouhei Igarashi) is a name as I understand it, so you can't exactly translate that part obviously.

I think I found something that nobody else has. In the game Pokepark Wii, a cutscene plays when you go to a new area for the first time. In the Beach Zone intro, there is a loop from Stylus RMX. It's 63 - Hiccup Island combo-a, at around a tempo of 85 BPM. Here's a link to the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXY1J8Uwd-o

What hardware did yoko shimomura use for orchestra sounds in KH2?
by sirsoundfont at 10:07 PM EDT on June 28, 2017
@peronmls If you want the instruments from KH2, you can rip the SF2 Soundfont files from the game using VGMTrans and .PSF2 files of the game audio. (FLStudio has a built-in Soundfont player to compose music with them)
by peronmls at 12:41 AM EDT on June 29, 2017
@sirsoundfont
I'm seeing if anybody may know the source of them.
So no. I don't need the soundfont nor do I want them.
Source thread not the opposite.

Does anyone know the source of this guitar sample? It's used in Kids Run Through the City from Final Fantasy VI.
by G-Boy at 11:13 AM EDT on July 2, 2017
@Enclave123
I tried the JV-1080 dashboard, but it only produces sound when I choose the GM bank. When I choose another bank, it goes completely silent, and it even stays silent when I choose the GM bank again after choosing another bank. Sometimes it plays 64voicePiano after I've changed the number of the channel, but only one time. After that, it goes completely silent again.

I don't want my JV-1080 to stop working, so I'll use MIDI Out instead.

@G-Boy

I could understand and in fact i have this issue before one time i have this issue is by changing the port to current it so i can play sounds.

Sometimes i fixed this issue through perform mode and go to parameter + palette + control by turning the midi channels switches on and then go to midi channel while fixing the channel numbers by correcting them into 1 to 16.

Have you made any demos of the samples?

Pikmin by Xane123 at 9:08 AM EDT on July 3, 2017
I don't know for sure in most of its songs, but I think unfortunately for me both Pikmin and its sequel use Roland Sound Canvas samples.

For example, in Forest of Hope, they appear to have combined multiple instruments into new ones, but when the sunset version plays (2:43), the celesta and marimba sound like they replace the existing instruments.

Sound Canvas...rrgh. by Xane123 at 3:12 AM EDT on July 6, 2017
Ah, so I was right on my suspicions about Pikmin...good music's there but those samples...ick...is there a MIDI rip from those Pikmin 1/2 so maybe one day I could "fix the songs", like what can be done with DS games thanks to VGMTrans?

On another subject, I recall hearing some Sound Canvas-y samples in Mega Man ZX/ZX Advent...with how much I think those samples belong only in MIDIs, not games, I easily spot their usually cheap sound...but that's just my opinion on Roland Sound Canvas...

...but end of rant, as one sample isn't really Sound Canvas, but Drifting Floe from Mega Man ZX Advent has a sample (lead instrument) that reminds me of Sound Canvas, but the closest instrument I've found is Solo Vox or Brightness.

@Xane123
You could remix the songs because Pikmin is sequenced, but there's not a MIDI rip of the game, so you would have to rip the AW banks and the other files from the ISO and convert them to MIDI or ask someone else to do it. Ripping music from GameCube games is very complicated and hard IMO, and when I tried it with The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, it didn't work.

Regarding the Mega Man sample, it's definitely not from any of the Sound Canvases. It could be from a JV-1080.

The whistle in Logic is apparently really close to the whistle in the Slider theme from Super Mario 64, and I believe it is a possibility, since Logic first was released in the early 90's. But it's probably from a sample CD.

EDIT: The Logic library from the 90's didn't have that whistle sample, so Logic fortunately can't be Kondo's source.

@G-Boy: Hmm...I'd think asking someone'd be a good idea, as I wouldn't know what really to do, or what to do in a Pikmin game itself, other than edit Pikmin 2's files to make silly things happen. However, HCS should add a private message system here as I wouldn't know how to contact anyone but to ask in a thread and have someone come along to help.

Also, good if the Mega Man ZX: Advent sample isn't a Sound Canvas one. I guess if I find anything that sounds "cheap", I should ask about it here; If it's confirmed it's one particular instrument from Sound Canvas, It'd be added to that spreadsheet.

(And another question comes to mind: people in this thread in the past have mentioned Roland keyboards sometimes have the same samples as a non-keyboard instrument...what keyboards by them have the Sound Canvas instruments? That's off-topic here but I worry about how much visitors to the forum would check out and reply to a new thread.)

By the way, this one drumloop from Cuckooland Unhinged has been bugging me for quite some time. I know I've heard it somewhere (most certainly in a game), and I'm 99.9% sure there's an upbeat female voice talking when the drum loop starts playing. For some reason I just happen to remember that, but I can't remember what she says (maybe the title of the game or something).. Does it ring any bell for anyone?

No, I have that sound library, and that's not it (the drum kit can't even be found on that expansion board, in fact). I'm still sticking to my "KORG Trinity" guns on that one. Thanks for effort, though (no sarcasm).

Sample: Amen Break
Source: Amen, Brother

Near the end of Twisted Vine, a different drum loop starts playing; Slowing it down reveals it's a compressed version of the Amen Break.

Comparison is here. First is the game's sample, second is the Amen Break, third is both at the same time. It's a perfect match! It originates from the end of the break, right before the cymbal.

Someone a while back mentioned Pokepark having Stylus RMX's Hiccup Island preset in one of its songs (Unfortunately you were not the first lol so sorry to burst your bubble :p). My friends and I did some research a couple months back and found quite a few loops used in the music. I put them all in a tiny section at the bottom of the Pokemon VGM Spreadsheet, so since many will likely gloss over it, I'll duplicate it here:

If you mean this one, it doesn't really sound the same.

Do you have another sample?

Help locating samples by sirsoundfont at 5:59 AM EDT on July 17, 2017
Could anybody here please tell me if you recognize the samples in a song? I've sent an email to both composers of the game "Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex", but neither have responded. The song is "Arctic Antics", here is a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrpOMXcPYe4

I spoke with Josh Mancell, aka the composer of Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter.

He actually used a JV1080 on Jak and Daxter the most, he use some samples from it for Crash Bandicoot.
by sirsoundfont at 11:40 PM EDT on July 17, 2017
@Enclave123 I don't think Josh Mancell worked on that Crash game, he only did the original trilogy as far as I know. The people who composed Crash 4 are Andy Blythe and Marten Joustra, but I haven't been able to get any replies from them.
by Enclave123 at 2:22 PM EDT on July 18, 2017
@sirsoundfont as for your reply, actually i was referring to the original trilogy. I think Andy and Marten used a Roland D50 and a Korg M1 on the OST. I heard some presets from it.

NAM 1975 Level 1 uses a Juno 106 or MKS-50 for the brass sound the trumpet like analog synth, and there is also the DX7 E Piano 1 sound.

What does the e Guitar sound in Street Fighter II (regular) for SNES come from? I'm talking about the fake dist Guitar used for power chords and lead lines. I'm talking about in the credits and a lot of other music. It's that duck sounding synth that sounds like a quack lead combined with a guitar. I'd guess the S-50 or D-50.

Okay; so I've done some of my own investigating, and for now I've come to the conclusion that the KORG Trinity might not have what I'm looking for after all. That being said, if anyone here who has an SD-90/SC-8850 is willing to make audio demos for all 30 of the drum sets said to be included in that sound library, that would be awesome.

Anybody know the origin of the piano sound heard throughout Super Smash Bros (N64, see example below)?

That's 64voicePiano from the JV-1080.

This patch from the Proteus 2 sounds very similar to a couple sound effects from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and maybe even the Playstation console BIOS fanfare.
This patch from the Proteus FX sounds similar to the percussion in the beginning of The Inner Shrine from Tekken 4. Was looking for this patch a couple months ago, hopefully this is actually it.
by sirsoundfont at 8:51 AM EDT on July 23, 2017
I did extensive searching through the M1 VST, and I still didn't find what I was looking for. It's the flute-ish synth that plays in this: https://youtu.be/XrpOMXcPYe4?t=6 (any help is greatly appreciated)

"and maybe even the Playstation console BIOS fanfare."

I got *so* excited when I read this; I've spent years obsessing over this sound (which, to my mind, is one of the most mysterious and evocative sounds in all of gaming), trying to work out what synths were used in its creation. All I've managed to find out so far is that the two high resonance synth sounds in the opening section *might* possibly be the Roland D50 patch 'Spacious Sweep':

YouTube
SynthMania

Anyway, I tested the Proteus 2 patch against the PlayStation BIOS sound and, unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be the one. The sound was designed by Takashi Fujisawa, one of the founders of SCE. He also composed for the generative music game Depth (aka Fluid in PAL territories) so if anybody can recognize the synths used here we might be able to identify some more patches.

@G-Boy
Thanks! How do you know it's from the JV-1080? Initially I thought it might be 'NicePiano', also from the 1080, but I think '64VoicePiano' is right.

Mega Man Star Force OST by Juan21 at 4:25 AM EDT on July 26, 2017
I have always wondered what instruments were used in the MMSF series. Were they sampled from a commercial synth or were they completely custom made. BTW if it helps, these games where for the DS and most of the music was composed by Akari Kaida and Yoshino Aoki along with others.

There are some noticeable general samples such as Orchestral Hits and a very distinguishable Sync Lead, but the difficult ones seem to be pads and synths.

For example:
Wave Battle! Ride On!!: MegaMan Star Force 3

Staff Roll: MegaMan Star Force 3

Pads and Synths:
Black Hole Server: MegaMan Star Force 3

Dread Joker Stage: MegaMan Star Force 3 This one has a unique Sync Lead.

The Radio World: MegaMan Star Force 3

Ah ok, I thought you meant that Hirokazu Ando was for certain using a 1080. The '64 Voice Piano' patch is also in the JV-2080.
by PokeMusic at 2:26 PM EDT on July 26, 2017
@Juan21
If it helps, the 2nd composer you mentioned started on a synth in 1984, so it could be a Jupiter 8/6 for the sync leads. Though they could be from a workstation, one of there studios has a Korg X50, so that could be it, or Yamaha Motif, which I saw in another studio. Also, some of the pads sound like Wavestation programming.

Does anybody know the origin of the harp samples heard in Mario Paint when you click the star on the title screen? Example here.

The first arpeggio sounds like it could be an edited version of the Fairlight CMI sample 'harpdngd', although it's unlikely Hip Tanaka et al. had access to such equipment in 1992. Possibly from an Akai or Roland sample cd?

felineki said that they're from the Akai S612 library "SL203 Chorus & Ensemble".
by palo_alto at 7:31 AM EDT on July 28, 2017
@G-Boy
Thanks again. I just searched and felineki give the disclaimer 'partially speculative', so possibly not for certain. Those old Akai libraries are very hard to find; I wonder if the same sample turned up anywhere else.

By the way, while we're on the subject of sample libraries, two days ago I discovered that Audacity can open .bin files and render them as audio. This is a useful way to check the contents of sample library cds downloaded from the web without the need to extract and mount an iso file. The only drawback to this method is that there is no way of obtaining the correct sample mapping etc should you want to use them in a software sampler.

I've compared the Proteus saxophone to the one Grant uses, and it matches perfectly, even without pitch bending. Here's a sample of it:

Sorry for being off topic, but this sound I've heard in a lot of video games in the 90's, as well as Indonesian music.
I forget what video games (I think a Mickey Mouse game) but the songs are

@PokeMusic
I hear you, my friend. I'm still trying to find that drum kit used in Dynasty Warriors 2-3, and even after I posted an update about my doubts of it coming from the KORG Trinity, I still haven't recieved replies.

Yeah, but does the Sound Canvas series or JV-1080 have any similar preset to the quack? Anyone?
by G-Boy at 4:02 AM EDT on August 4, 2017
@PokeMusic
The JV-1080 or an expansion board to it may have a similar preset, but I can't check it right now because I don't have it with me.

@G-Boy
