@PokeMusic
There's a three hour video on YouTube showing all of the JV-1080 presets and there are various Sound Canvas demos at SynthMania if you need to find a sound
by PokeMusic at 12:42 PM EDT on August 7, 2017
@palo_alto
Synthmania doesn't have all the SC patches on his website, I am talking about the entire set. It might be something like Reso Saw or one of the Acid Guitars or another synth sound, what is an acid guitar anyways?

The 'Acid Guitar 1/2' patches in the SC-88 Pro are probably synth leads with some form of modulation such as phaser, flanger, or chorus, to mimic the psychedelic guitar timbre of 1960s music. How do you know it is from a Sound Canvas module anyway? And why are you asking about Indonesian pop music in this thread, isn't it for VGM? I saw you posting on Vintage Synth Explorer as well, you probably should try and find out what instruments were typically used on such productions. Could be from a Yamaha or Korg rompler, an Akai sampler, a Nord Lead, or even an analogue synth. It's a fairly straightforward sound, just a sawtooth wave with high filter resonance and an envelope with slowish attack modulating the filter cutoff.

Back to VGM: does anybody recognise the pad and synth string sounds used in this absolute masterpiece by Junya Nakano from Final Fantasy X? The cold, breathy pads used in the A and C sections, and the warm strings in the B section. I'm guessing Roland something, possibly SC-880? Or one of the JV/XV series?

Ok. What about the bass in Street Fighter II SNES or the synth guitars and som leads? Those are unique. I'm going to say they used a U-220. The synth bass is probably sequenced, the guitar I'm talking about is that fake power chords sound for example in the ending theme, it sounds like a digital waveform, or maybe a pulse wave that's wide, using a filter with an envelope and a "click" on release. My keyboard has a charang sound, and it sounds too non right, but it's close except for the waa at the beginning of the Guitar.
For example

I swear I've heard that Guitar sound before. I think on some Roland synth.
Also, how does Sound Canvas for iOS stand up to the real deal and SC-VA? I think it sounds close.

The pads do sound quite Roland-ish. I also think they are Sound Canvas. There is a patch that sounds similar and they probably lowered the attack to make it faster. It may be a sawtooth pad preset on a JV. It's from 2001, so I could check my Yamaha MX which has sounds from the Motif, that could have some similar stuff, it has a ton of pad sounds.

Three other synths to check for that duck sound are Roland JP-8000, Yamaha AN1X, and Korg Prophecy, three very popular VA synths ('virtual analogue', i.e. digital synths emulating traditional subtractive synthesis) in the mid to late 90s. Are you from Indonesia btw? It would be quite interesting to know what kind of equipment was/is popular in countries other than Japan/US/EU (now I'm going off-topic haha).

I tried to search in Japanese for Tatsuya Nishimura's gear list but didn't find anything. It could be a Roland U series, but a lot of the SF II music as arranged for SNES sounds like samples of FM synthesis, especially the bass. Perhaps one of the 4-op Yamaha synths? The original arcade music, composed by Yoko Shimamura, was also FM, except for the drums. I could be completely wrong though.

The reason I'm thinking Roland, and possibly Sound Canvas, for that FF X piece, is that Nobuo Uematsu was known for using SC, and since this was the first FF game to use multiple composers, they might have strived to keep the sound consistent throughout by using the same synths ... idk though. I've now listened to this piece for almost 9 hours straight -- yes, straight, with no rests; it's my new favourite song and I can't see me stopping for some time -- and am beginning to think that the first pad is mixed with a piano, it's very low but you can make it out in the attack portion. I'd like to have SC-VA on my computer for music production purposes but unfortunately it is not supported on my system (I'm still running OSX 10.6.8 on this machine). Perhaps I will purchase the iOS version at some point but then I'd have to get some kind of wireless controller, or a MIDI-to-USB converter.

by PokeMusic at 12:10 PM EDT on August 8, 2017
No. I am from US. As for SSFII I agree they do sound FM. I think they used a FM synth with the same chip, even the PSR and PSS yamaha in the late 80s early 90s used them, though none of them have 4 op. But some lead sounds in that game sound like PCM or LA samples, or could even be an analog synth. But you're right I think there is a lot of Yamaha DX/TX sounds. Could even be an SY something.

Edit: it could be DX21, DX27, and DX100. They have the same sound chip. As the arcade version.

Edit: the pad is probably layered with piano you're right, there is a similar preset in the MX, I think it's called Saw Pad, and it's also in the Motif if I am correct. But it's probably SC-__ warm pad layered with piano. Or the Yamaha XG Dream preset.

Anyone here?
I am planning to get an iPad Air, so I can use Sound Canvas for iOS. How does Sound Canvas for iOS compare to the VA version, or is it basically the same?
by starerik at 6:33 PM EDT on August 8, 2017
I hope that isn't your main purpose for getting an iPad.
by PokeMusic at 7:38 PM EDT on August 8, 2017
It's so I can see if there is any instruments in a video game I've heard. But how does it compare? I didn't want any criticism and still don't.

by palo_alto at 1:19 AM EDT on August 9, 2017
There won't be any difference, it's exactly the same code running exactly the same engine/samples. Though for the price of an iPad Air you could get a used SC-88 Pro and a JV-1080/1010. The iPad does have some very powerful software synths however so it's definitely a worthwhile investment in that regard.

Seeing as we're on the subject, here is a picture of Yoko Shimamura in her studio, presumably circa late-90s/early-2000s. I searched and nobody had posted it yet, perhaps will be useful to someone at some point.

@PokeMusic
There won't be a difference, but the PC version is still better IMO because it's easier to import MIDI files and record instruments in that version. And the Sound Canvas VA would be much, much cheaper than an iPad Air, of course.

@palo_alto
I also found that picture and uploaded it in the server, and people recognized some of the synths: Korg Trinity Pro X, Korg Triton Rack, Akai S5000 and Roland Super JV JV-1080.
by PokeMusic at 8:13 AM EDT on August 9, 2017
OK. But the iOS version will be easier and more portable. Even though I can play both with my MX49.
by palo_alto at 8:47 AM EDT on August 9, 2017
I think the iPad would be a worthwhile purchase if you intend to also use it for other iOS synths such as Korg M1/Wavestation, the PPG Wave stuff, etc.

Sorry to have to do this, but in case anyone missed the previous page, I'm trying to id the pad and synth string used in this masterpiece?

by PokeMusic at 12:52 PM EDT on August 9, 2017
I would intend it for the other synths too, I intend to purchase M1, Wavestation, PPG Wave, ARP Odyssey and others. They would work for the music. Because video game music producers also use the M1 and Wavestation, so I could search for patches in that.

I got a reply from Andy Blythe about the Wrath of Cortex instruments. He says that it was so long ago that he can't remember exactly what he used, but he thinks he used an Emu Proteus 2 Orchestral and Akai S1000 samplers. (He also has always used Cubase as his DAW)

I compared them, and they all matched.
by palo_alto at 11:23 AM EDT on August 11, 2017
Sorry, but I highly doubt that the SC-88 was used on this track, given that it was made in 2013. Much more likely to have been a software sampler or drum machine plugin loaded with a 909 bank. These are standard, commonly used sounds that can be found everywhere.

The SC-88 was already used heavily in the soundtrack, even if the game is from 2013, so it would make sense if the TR-909 kit is from the SC-88 Pro. For example, this whistle is also from the SC-88.

The steel drums in Beachside Dream are from the Roland SR-JV80-05 World expansion board, and the accordion in The Wind that Blows Over Cavi Cape is probably from HALion, the Trinity or the Triton.

I noticed the SC-55 Bass & Lead preset in a lot of Mario Kart DS music and also a few other lead and bass synths, it is likely they could be from the Trinity, M1, JV-1080 and Sound Canvas. And in Bowsers Inside Story, the Cavi Cape accordion sounds similar to one on the M1, which means it might be in the Trinity or Triton. I wonder where Benjamin and Can of Nothing have been, haven't heard from them in a while. I guess they're busy in the Discord server.

I was wrong about the Banjo-Kazooie flute, it's not from the Proteus/2. I compared it again after hearing a remaster made by Grant Kirkhope, and Legato Flute from the SR-JV80-09 Session board definitely sounds more similar. I'm not sure if it was used since I don't have Session, but the Proteus/2 definitely wasn't used for it.

I was also wrong about the Kurzweil flute in Twilight Princess, since I couldn't compare it.

I recently watched and episode of How It's Made and heard familiar chords from the Mega Man Battle Network 3 OST.

Seems to me like they are the same instrument just played on different notes. Click below to compare them. I'm wondering if perhaps they're from Roland or Korg presets.

Does anybody know the source of this sound effect that shows up in the Tekken PS1 intro? You can hear it at 50 seconds.
I've also heard it used in Sonic Adventure 2 at the beginning of the mini boss themes.
Both games have other instrument samples from the JV-1080, it might be from there, but I haven't come across it.
Animal Crossing by sirsoundfont at 10:29 AM EDT on August 31, 2017
I was looking through the Roland SC-88 Pro instruments, and I'm pretty sure Animal Forest (N64)/Animal Crossing (Gamecube)'s soundtrack had samples from it. 2 examples are the "VS Organ" and the "Cheese Saw 1", which can be heard in multiple songs from the OST.

An actual Sound Canvas, or SCVA?
by G-Boy at 10:21 AM EDT on September 1, 2017
I was wrong about the strings in the castle theme from New Super Mario Bros. It wasn't two layered presets, it was actually a separate preset called "RotaryStrng" from the SC-88.
by sirsoundfont at 2:47 PM EDT on September 1, 2017
@PokeMusic I was looking through the SCVA VST, but since the game was released in 2001, I guess the soundtrack was made with a real Sound Canvas.

@Zetto Kuzuuya Dragonball Z Budokai uses ADX files, which are basically MP3 files. So no, you can't rip the soundfonts from DBZ Budokai, because it doesn't have any soundfonts.

I was searching on some stuff in Synthmania.

I find this sound http://www.synthmania.com/Roland%20L-CDX-03%20Brass%20And%20Woodwinds/Audio/Disc%202/037%20BRS-Ensembl.sfz.mp3

It sounds rather familiar reminding me a lot of conker.

I also find these sounds it sounds very Banjo Kazooie like.

http://www.synthmania.com/Roland%20L-CDX-03%20Brass%20And%20Woodwinds/Audio/Disc%201/049%20WND-Bassoon%201.mp3

I might found the famous snare drums from goldeneye or any other games.

http://www.synthmania.com/Roland%20L-CDX-04%20Strings%20And%20Orchestral%20Percussion/Audio/Disc%202/068%20SNR-Orch%20Sn%20menu.mp3

I also find a metal gear solid sample.

http://www.synthmania.com/Best%20Service%20Gigapack/Audio/Disc%202/012%20CHO%20-%20Vohmm-Houuu.mp3

I also heard this sample in timesplitters 2 in Neo Tokyo.

@G-Boy (and co.)
Thank you for helping find some more instruments.
I heard some other JV-1080 presets in NSMB series. Like some of the lead/pad/bass synth sounds and brass sounds. Also some from a few expansions I think.

A very a huge fan of Masafumi Takada, the silver case seen to use some JV1080 presets.

Like the GM string preset i keep hearing on a few tracks.

I think Reminiscences use String Arco in the orchestra card.

I keep on hearing the Marimbas from the jv1080 as well.

If anybody recognizes any Miitopia samples, I would love to know what was used in the soundtrack
by Enclave123 at 4:21 PM EDT on September 15, 2017
Seen like Roland Cloud is putting the orchestra jv80 card presets in it anthology series.

This seen like great news for people who can't buy a Jv80 synthesizer series, i still own the original card if anything i am happy about Roland releasing this.

@sirsoundfont
The accordion in the HALion GM Set seems to be used in the Vacation music from Miitopia, and the marimba in the Explorer music is from the SC-88.

Edit
Pulse Clavi is actually one of the Analog Clav patches on the JV or Pulse Clav on the SC-88
FS Square is LM Square from the SC-88
Belly Lead is still the same though. Or it could be Chubby Lead from the Fantom X?

Anyone, post anything new you've found.

Some of the saxophones in the Roland Sound Canvas SC-88 sound like the saxophone from WarioWare D.I.Y, and I know that certain other WarioWare games used the SC-88 as well, so it might be true
by palo_alto at 5:02 PM EDT on September 21, 2017
Does anyone know where the Majora's Mask harpsichord is from?
by G-Boy at 8:37 AM EDT on September 22, 2017
@palo_alto
It's probably from a Kurzweil synth, the Korg 01R/W, an SR-JV80 expansion board or a sample CD.
by sirsoundfont at 9:43 AM EDT on September 22, 2017
There's a sound in Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando that I recognize from the X-Static Goldmine sample CD. I think it's the sound for when you pause the game, or go to the world-select screen (I haven't played the game in years, I can't exactly remember when the sound plays). The sound is "7107R SYN-FX" from "TRACK 71-01". (Or at least that's what it's called in the pack I have)

Does anyone know where this honky-tonk piano in Chrono Trigger could be from? It's not from the JV-1080, Akai CD-ROM Sound Library Volume 1-2, Gigapack, E-MU Proteus/1-3 or any of the Sound Canvases.

Can anyone please help find Mario Kart 7 and NSMB2 instruments? Especially the synth sounds.
by Benjamin at 8:48 AM EDT on October 3, 2017
Logic Pro and Roland Fantom X should have most of the stuff in NSMB2. (for example, the Gold Ring bell synth is Candy Bell) Not sure about where the Super Leaf claves come from. As for Mario Kart 7, Logic Pro is definitely used (the sitars in Shy Guy's Bazaar), and I imagine they used a Roland as well but I'm not sure of what else.
by G-Boy at 10:34 AM EDT on October 3, 2017
The Roland ED Sound Canvas SC-8820 was also used in New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the music box, baahs and the dows. And the JV-1080 was used for the synth bass and the timpani.
by PokeMusic at 6:54 PM EDT on October 4, 2017
Yeah, there are some Fantom sounds in Mario Kart 7 and the whole NSMB series. I think some of the presets are used in many songs. So keep checking, you may find some more sounds, I'd imagine it's also used in Mario Kart DS and some more sounds in 3D Mario games (3D World, 3D Land, Galaxy 1/2).

In NSMB DS, Bowser Jr's theme has a synth I'm curious about. The one doing the lead has been used from songs in 1991-1994.
Here, I can show
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XKYsQZtDHUg The sawtooth quacky lead at 0:03ish (the 2 octaves apart sounding thing).
https://m.youtube.com/watch?list=PL897oho0-yh1GAIgy5FCjMGOFqbcNSjty&v=zU3etpACZP4 skip to the solo at 2:34 it is the same instrument, but lower, this was recorded in Jan 1st 1994.
I have a feeling it's from the SC-55, Proteus or K2000. It was also used in a song from '92 and '93, so it's definitely a 90's synth and a preset.

I have no doubt that in Breath of The Wild they used Spectrasonics Keyscape. I can confirm for the Rito Village Night Theme that the Piano sounds identical to the "LA Custom C7 Natural". By playing the melody with this sample intrument along the original record one can hear the typical "empty chorus" that usually comes up when you have the exact same sample played twice at almost the time.
by PokeMusic at 1:50 PM EDT on October 11, 2017
Can anyone please help find Super Mario 3D Land/World, Mario Kart DS/7, and NSMB series sounds, please? And post them into the list. I wonder what they used for the synthesizer sounds (leads, pads, synth bass, synth brass, synth chords, synth instruments, synth strings). Very curious about the Bowser Jr theme from NSMB DS, Koopa Cove (?) in MK7, Fort Fire Bros in 3D World (the synth strings), the NSMB2 Coin Heaven, NSMBWii Coin Heaven or Special Area, 3D World Piranha Creeper Creek (I think one of the sounds is from the JV, the Human Bass from whatever expansion card) and others. Also, the sound I called square Diamond, is really from the JV-80-11 Techno Expansion, and is called Retro Party.

That sample of "136 wild call @" I recognize from the OST of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (PS2), but it wasn't used in the game itself.

I think that some songs in Miitopia use the Martin Acoustic guitar from Spectrasonics Hans Zimmer Guitars. (it's also in Omnisphere 2)
Sounds in SEGA arcade games by SaturnJaguar at 12:05 AM EDT on October 17, 2017
Hi! I recently found out that several SEGA arcade games like Virtua Fighter 1 & 2 and Sonic the Fighters used a KORG M1 preset piano sound. I was wondering if anyone can identify any more sounds or instruments in these songs?:

Where did the sample derive from btw? I'm actually on the lookout for some of Shinji Hosoe's resources (aside the Roland JV1080-2080 series)... even though he probably didn't compose the songs that were exclusive to the OST.
by G-Boy at 3:45 AM EDT on October 17, 2017
@SaturnJaguar
Course Select uses Detuned EP2 from the Roland Sound Canvas, Organ 3 from the Roland Sound Canvas SC-88 and PopDrum Set 2 from the Roland Super JV JV-1080.

Does anyone know where the piano used in Space Junk Galaxy is from?

Or this drumkit from Castlevania: Curse of Darkness?
by Nisto at 9:04 AM EDT on October 17, 2017
@AceK: the sample is originally from "Karma Chopra" by AMG, but I got it from their demo disc called "Taste", which features samples from a variety of their libraries.
by Mr.Sanic at 7:25 PM EDT on October 17, 2017

SC-8820PRO-Fantasia 4
SC-8820PRO-Detuned EP3

70's Organ i'm not sure,but heard it while extracting samples from NSMBWii BRSAR
The hollow mini os used in the underwater theme intro
Fantasia 4 is used on World 9
Detuned EP3 is used in underwater and also on NSMB DS.
Polysynth is Used in Bowser Jr. Battle (Airship)
Nylon Guitar is used as Bass in most of the songs.

There's a lot more but i'm trying my best to get all of them.

Does anyone around here happen to have Complete Celt by AMG? It contains samples used in Monster Hunter, Heroes of Might and Magic IV and the visual novel game Forest (great soundtrack) among other games, and is alleged to have been used by many VGM composers for celtic-themed soundtracks, but I could never find a copy! I know AMG is selling it on Samples4.com but they sadly don't have the first 3CD-set (there's 6 CDs in total). It's really frustrating as I've been looking for the full library for a couple of years now.

Here's some demos of the library: http://www.makemusiconyourmac.com/Samples/Others/Others.html

Hmmm, I wonder if anyone can add these sounds to the games they're on to the list.
I heard them in NSMB DS/Wii/2/U and the 3D Mario games and Mario Karts
As a matter of fact, the Beach Theme in NSMB DS uses CS Saw Lead from the SC-8820
