Update list by PokeMusic at 7:50 PM EDT on October 18, 2017
Anyone?
Also, can you make a Mario game sound source spreadsheet?
Please check those presets on SCVA or SCIOS.

edited 6:56 PM EDT October 19, 2017

And G-Boys instrument source team
Have you found any new instruments yet? Please post those, I'm curious about NSMB series. You should check SC VA because there will be plenty of presets. Also, someone on YouTube has demos of all the SC-8850 presets.

@PokeMusic

First off: Stop spamming "when you will upload new instrument findings?". The answer will always be "when we gather enough new findings to make a good list."

Second: Not to be rude or anything, but your findings are almost always incorrect. You keep finding SC-55 or SC-88 instruments, but never from other companies.

I would guess that you only listen to the module demo and compare it to a song. That's where you're doing it wrong. You probably think that it's "close enough", but we need the sounds that sound EXACTLY like the original. Sure, you can't do that on streamed songs, because you can't get the soundfont, but when the track is sequenced, there's no excuse to grab a soundfont and listen to seperate instrument samples and (maybe) compare them against your supposed finding in Audacity by the waveforms.
If you need more advice, contact me or any other VGM sources finder either here or on Discord.

@PokeMusic

Basically,Most of wii games used Roland's sound canvas,'cuz a lot of kirby games uses them.
by Enclave123 at 3:54 PM EDT on October 20, 2017
In a way, i made a edited version of Wavesync without the synth layer it sounds exactly like the real thing from goldeneye.

I enjoy using the JV1080 a lot and lately i been editing some instruments and saving them,
by PokeMusic at 5:18 PM EDT on October 20, 2017
Everyone sorry.
I have a MX49, so I'll look for instruments on that, I think I heard some of the presets before. It has Motif sounds, and the accordion was indeed used in Pokémon Black and White. I also heard some patches from it in games. I think one of the guitars from it is used in Block Ninja on Nintendoland. I'm not sure though, because it might also be a Fantom, Triton or a real guitar. I for sure heard Irish Pipe in it, layered in octaves. Wii Sports Resort uses synth brass that MIGHT be from it in Swordplay winning results.
Korg M1 seems to be used a lot in Sonic. The E. Piano 1 preset was used in SM64 for the Dire Dire Docks.
@Hexagon12
Thanks for letting me know. I think you're right, I listen to the demo, and that's where I get it wrong.

Also
I am getting an iPad with Sound Canvas, iM1, and iWavestation among others, so I will be able to help.

@Mr.Sanic
Isn't LM Square used in the NSMBWii Underwater theme intro? What are the other sounds used for? I think Reso Slap is used in some song as bass, and in Wii Sports I heard Cheese Organ in a song, I forget which.
by Mr.Sanic at 1:56 PM EDT on October 21, 2017
Cheese Organ is in Wii Sport's intro.
And yes,both LM Square and Hollow Mini are used in underwater.
And Reso Slap is used on boss fights.
by PokeMusic at 9:42 AM EDT on October 22, 2017
I wonder which synth they used for NSMB DS Bowser Jr theme lead synth (the duck sounding one)? It has to be at least from 1992 because that's when songs started using the sound (even in some pop, which songs doesn't matter). Also, I wonder about the NSMB series instruments, especially the synth leads. I am interested in the Reznor/Koopalings/Bowser Jr battle themes and others.

I'm looking for NSMB2, U, DS, and Wii instruments. Where are some places I should look?
by starerik at 8:04 PM EDT on October 25, 2017
@PokeMusic I still don't understand why you need an iPad for the plug-ins, you don't have a computer?
by G-Boy at 2:53 AM EDT on October 26, 2017
@PokeMusic
You should look in Best Service Voice Spectral, Sound Canvas VA, E-MU Proteus/2 Orchestral, E-MU Proteus/3 World, Roland Super JV JV-1080, Kurzweil K2000, Korg 01R/W, Korg Triton, UVI PlugSound Box, Roland Fantom X, Kontakt Factory Library and Logic (if you have a Mac).
by PokeMusic at 6:39 AM EDT on October 26, 2017
@starerik
Because it's cheaper than a Mac and it's more portable. Also, because gigging will be quicker with just the iPad and a MIDI keyboard. And some plug ins are just on iPad and those ones are unique. I am also thinking about getting a PC.
@G-Boy
Thanks. I actually have found iPad Sound Canvas iOS, M1, Wavestation, Mono/Poly, Polysix, Odyssei will work, and the M1 and SC-55/88/88 Pro/8820 are all used in those games. I know the analog emulations will because some of the composers use vintage 80's synths and program them (like analog synths). Is there any VST equivalent to the K2000 and Proteus/2 and Proteus/3? I heard someone released a soundfont based on the Proteus around here.

@PokeMusic Sure, it’s cheaper than a Mac but the plug-ins are available for Windows as well.
by G-Boy at 9:29 AM EDT on October 26, 2017
@PokeMusic
The samples channel on the Discord server will probably help you, it has some of the libraries you need. The K2000 has a Synth Mania page.
by Mr.Sanic at 11:49 AM EDT on October 26, 2017
@PokeMusic

Wii uses sounds based on it's own hardware
so the games also have their own samples.
the fact that we can't extract them is because basically almost every wii game is streamed or stored in other part on the disc,which at the moment is inaccessible.
For the 3DS,same thing.
And NSMBU uses some of NSMBW samples.
The only way is try to know which sound hardware they used,so we can be sure that it really uses that one.

My knowledge is that the NSMB series uses Roland's SC-55 and SC-8820.

Oh,and someone made a Roland SC-8820 Soundfont
it's incomplete at the moment,but i'll try to finish it.

I tried joining the Discord server, but I don't have permission to view the messages. I looked at the rules, but I still don't entirely understand what I'm supposed to do. Am I supposed to post a message in one of the channels before I have access? And if so, what message should I post, and which channel should I post it in?
by PokeMusic at 6:37 PM EDT on October 26, 2017
Me too. I wonder because I already have a color.
by G-Boy at 2:21 AM EDT on October 27, 2017
@PokeMusic
You username doesn't already have a color. We asked you what color you wanted, but you didn't reply.
by sirsoundfont at 3:08 AM EDT on October 27, 2017
It said I could get a ban if I didn't post anything, which is worrying me. Am I supposed to just say anything in any channel, and then I can see the chat?
by PokeMusic at 6:33 AM EDT on October 27, 2017
@G-Boy
I didn't see. Was it by text, because I'm not audio chat person.
by G-Boy at 3:23 AM EDT on October 28, 2017
@sirsoundfont
That rule means that you might be temporarily banned if you don't say what color you want and go inactive on the server for a long time.
by sirsoundfont at 1:03 PM EDT on October 28, 2017
@G-Boy so I just go into any channel and ask for a color, and then I'll have permission to see the chat?
by G-Boy at 3:18 AM EDT on October 29, 2017
@sirsoundfont
I've already asked you what color you want, you just need to reply.
Kirby 64 instruments by PokeMusic at 9:14 AM EDT on October 29, 2017
Anyone know what was used on Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards? Especially the synths on these tracks
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QMo9XKjuqQc That lead synth and bass
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Htr6L0_I0yc The quacky lead
It was composed by Jun Ishikawa and Hirokazu Ando.
That sound has been used on tons of Kirby games.

I'm curious. How do you find the samples from the games? Do you compare them with Audacity?
by Enclave123 at 11:11 PM EDT on October 30, 2017
I find the winding or metallic sound in goldeneye that was used in dam at the intro of the track.

It from a preset call Night shade in a higher pitch in my jv1080.

by G-Boy at 4:35 AM EDT on October 31, 2017
@PokeMusic
When a song is sequenced, I first listen to it. If I hear any samples that sound like they could be from a sample library/synth that I have access to, I extract the song's sound bank from the game's ROM, listen to the samples and look for them in the sample libraries/synths. If I find a sample, but aren't completely sure, I record it from my sample library/synth, import it into Audacity along with the sample from the game, set the sample rate to 8000 and compare the waveforms and the sounds.

When a song is streamed, I first listen to it. If I hear any samples that sound like they could be from a sample library/synth that I have access to, I search after them in the sample libraries/synths. If I find an instrument that sounds similar, I play the same notes on the instrument as the instrument in the song to be completely sure.

@Enclave123
Is the Kirby series "quacky" lead (from Dream Land 3 and Kirby 64) from the JV-1080?
An example
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=42GjrIv70XI
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Htr6L0_I0yc At 0:12
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VketDQ8ojG8 In the intro and the 2nd variation
https://m.youtube.com/watch?t=23s&v=15Ms08TDzK0 The chords and at 1:17ish
I have a feeling it's in the Vintage Synth board.
The same sound is also in this song
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=S7FLeEf9qrc In the intro but it has chorus on it, it's from 1996.

Sadly i can't find the sound anywhere in the vintage card and i been playing around with it and changing the pitch but somehow i can't find it.

It might be a sound canvas tbh

FYI, it's not on the SC-88.
by PokeMusic at 6:21 AM EDT on November 1, 2017
Oh, then it might be an actual synth (analog or VA).

What synths did they use on the soundtrack anyways?

@pokemon

Not everything is from roland tbh, i guess it might any company like Emu or Kurzweil.
by PokeMusic at 4:40 PM EDT on November 2, 2017
Yeah, I think it could be from a Proteus or K2000. Also, that last video, that group used a GR-700 I believe. So maybe the Kirby sound is a Roland sample from a Roland synth. Also, I am curious about the Bowser Jr NSMB DS lead synth in the first half of the theme.
Here is that one...
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XKYsQZtDHUg at 0:02
Also in songs from 1990-1994.

Hi!
Recently my friend decided to make a game.
I heard the music and loved it,i asked if it was streamed and it said that was sequenced.
Then he gave me acess to his game data folder to get the samples.
But the samples (and other sfx) were in .SND and .ADX.
I tried to search some snd to wav programs but it wasn't sucessful.
Can someone help me?
Heres the folder:

ADX Sound Effects:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/l6u89tdudewwj11/0000-SFXSND.rar

SND Samples:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/at05wgio8ckhpry/000FX_AWP1SND.rar

Oh and i also need ADX to WAV.
by Enclave123 at 5:01 PM EST on November 16, 2017
@Mr Sanic what kind of game is it?
by Mr.Sanic at 9:38 AM EST on November 19, 2017
@Enclave123

Well just an simple rpg game hehe =)
But i still in trouble trying to get ADX to WAV
and the SND's too.

@Mr. Sanic

Cool, i wonder what the music is really like.

So, I happened to be listening to Passion/Sanctuary by Hikaru Utada (opening theme for Kingdom Hearts II) in reverse, and heard something familiar around the 4:05 mark. It really feels like I've heard it before, but the closest I've found yet is the "Wolf at Vespers" sample from Pandora's Toolbox (by Q Up Arts / Sonic Foundry). I'm not at all convinced that's the sample, but it sure seems like it could be a sample, maybe even by the same library producer (David Torn).

Haven't checked in here in a while! But I have started collecting my Super Street Fighter II findings in a spreadsheet. Have added a few new findings to it since I posted here last.

Anyway, I recently came across an auction for a good chunk of the Akai S950 samplers' official library on floppy disks. Unlike the comparable Roland S-50 and Yamaha TX16W samplers from the same era, there hasn't been any effort by users to make its libraries available online. They remain elusive. Yet I have managed to identify at least a couple game soundtrack sounds in the few glimpses I've been able to get at the library. Akai samplers were an industry standard, so it's likely that many soundtracks out there, particularly from the late 80s to mid 90s, use the S950's library.

The problem is the price. The seller is asking for the equivalent of close to $1000 for these 34 disks. Granted they're in nearly pristine condition, a rarity for something 30 years old. But it's too much for me to afford on my own. So I brought up the idea of pooling together to purchase these in the Discord, and zimbolt seemed interested, so I figured I'd go ahead and post here in the thread to see if anyone else is interested. Presumably if we got enough people to pitch in, I or someone else would buy the disks, rip them, then make them publically available online. We could them possibly resell the disks to recoup some of the cost.

Any takers?

I find the bass sound that was used in goldeneye.

It call X Wire Bass in the vintage card.

Commonly used in the Egyptian level.

@Nisto it actually plays when the synth lead of the track starts. Maybe around 1:20.

For some reason this sounds very familiar.

Is this the DK Rap beat?

Why the hell do you have an idle ban system active on your server? It's not as if you're paying for those resources. I treat Discord servers the same as I do IRC, except I idle way more on Discord, because I primarily use it for video chat with one person, and otherwise only pay attention to @mentions.
by mariofan12ify at 4:27 AM EST on November 30, 2017
@Enclave123 - Yeah it is, nice find.
by Hexagon12 at 12:02 PM EST on December 1, 2017
@kode54

We don't use any idle ban systems. I purposefully kicked you and others who haven't said the color they want for their username. We can't let users without a color role to stay for too long, because it would become a privacy issue.

If you want to join again, use this link: https://discord.gg/rmpEDxB and please state the color for your username when asked.

still searching for the pad and string sounds in "Illusion/Phantoms" from Final Fantasy X. composed by Junya Nakano.

could somebody possibly ask in the Discord on my behalf? thank you

by Mr.Sanic at 8:08 PM EST on December 1, 2017
@palo_alto

i am totally sure that those pads in the intro (00:00 to 00:05) are from Sound Canvas (SC-8820 MAP) it may be a regular glockenspiel or the Round Glock.
by palo_alto at 12:14 AM EST on December 2, 2017
thanks, but I meant the main pad and string sound heard throughout the piece (especially the 'cold', 'icy' sounding pad), not the bells at the beginning
by Enclave123 at 2:03 PM EST on December 2, 2017
@Palo_alto it could be in any Roland Rompler.
by G-Boy at 2:55 PM EST on December 2, 2017

It's probably from Spectrasonics Distorted Reality 1 or 2.

Thanks!
FFVIII etc. by notveryhelpful at 12:23 AM EST on December 4, 2017
According to Uematsu, FFVIII is mostly Roland SC-88, except for some live instruments like the xylophone in "Blue Fields". There's an abandoned FFVIII soundfont at https://ff8sf2.zophar.net/ which has most General MIDI presets, and quite a lot of instruments tweaked for each FFVIII track.

FFX may also have SC-88 instruments - for example, the harpsichord in "Game Over" is similar to the ones in FFVIII, like the "Truth Harpsichord" in the soundfont, but with louder bass frequencies.

@palo_alto

I tried to rip the MIDI and soundfont with a PSF2 set and VGMTrans (https://ci.appveyor.com/project/magcius/vgmtrans/), and apparently the pads in "Phantoms" are a combination of a few different sound layers.

There are two types of synth strings, and two different "windy" sounds. One windy sound begins with a "hit" and decays quickly, while the other has a more constant volume (this is the breathy one). One is panned towards the left channel, and the other one towards the right. There's also a sustained piano sound that plays at the same time as the synth strings and windy sounds from 0:08 to 0:41. The pad after this is the two synth string sounds mixed with the two windy sounds.

"This Is Your Story" may include the same synth strings and wind effects more prominently, but it's streamed unlike most of the soundtrack, and therefore the samples can't be separately ripped. The PS3 arrangement is quite different for both themes, but the mixing and some of the instrumentation are clearer in the newer version of "Phantoms". The same windy samples probably aren't used in the older and newer versions.

The instruments in the "Phantoms" sound something like this (the 0x... track titles come from VGMTrans):

0x31 - Synth strings A (0:41-1:14 etc)
0x15D - Synth strings A (0:41-1:14 etc)
0x7D9 - Synth strings B (0:41-1:14 etc)
0xE5B - Synth strings B (0:08-0:41 etc)
0x159E - Piano (0:08-0:41 etc; layered with 0xE5B)
0x1CE1 - Glockenspiel (0:00-0:41 etc; layered with the other glockenspiel tracks)
0x22B8 - Glockenspiel (0:00-0:41 etc; layered with the other glockenspiel tracks)
0x2FE6 - Glockenspiel (0:00-0:41 etc; layered with the other glockenspiel tracks)
0x30D2 - Shaker & jingle bell (always played)
044B85 - Percussion (0:41-1:14 etc)
0x5042 - Triangle (always played from 0:08 onward)
0x5D4D - Wind A (0:08 onward; layered with the other wind sound)
0x5DE7 - Wind B (0:08 onward; layered with the other wind sound)

Roland synth string example that is quite similar (?): http://www.synthmania.com/Roland%20SC-

by palo_alto at 12:50 AM EST on December 4, 2017
@notveryhelpful

contrary to your username, that was very helpful indeed! I suspected there was a piano type attack layered with that 'icy' pad in the A section, great to have it confirmed

that SC-880 patch is very similar to the strings heard in the B section, which also suggests that it might originate from the JV/XP series. thanks for your hard work!

I still need help finding this sound...
It's in Kirby's Dream Land 3. It's used in Sand Canyon 2 and King Dedede Battle themes. It's the quacky lead synth.
See
https://m.youtube.com/watch?t=61s&v=15Ms08TDzK0 the synth lead and chords at 0:13
https://m.youtube.com/watch?t=24s&v=42GjrIv70XI the lead synth at 0:06
Also used in this song from 1996
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HJzmJ5am_ow At the intro and solo at 1:38
I don't know if it's from a JV-1080 (since it was first heard by me in a 1995 song) Proteus, or K2000 or other synth. I think it's a preset. Can anyone check the K2000 or JV expansion boards for this sound. I think if it's JV, it is in Techno, Pop, Dance, or House expansion board.

Yeah. I think so. It's used in SO MANY Indonesian pop songs and Kirby games... it has a bit longer decay though and more resonance. It might also be from the JV-1080 Techno, House, Pop, or Hip Hop expansions.

Did you try looking on the Roland sound canvas vst?
by PokeMusic at 7:29 PM EST on December 7, 2017
I did look at the SC-8850 videos on YouTube but it doesn't have anything, but some similar. I think there is a preset on the SC-88 called "Quack Brass" but I don't know if it sounds like that.
by Jesse_ at 7:59 PM EST on December 7, 2017
@PokeMusic Try any preset with the name "Reso",it's usually those squeaky synths.

How do you loop those samples extracted from VGMToolBox advanced cutter/offset finder?

Yep. There are some similar. I think there is a preset on the Hip Hop Expansion for JV-1080 called JU Reso Ld 1 and 2 and maybe 3. Also, on SC-88 there's a preset called "Waspy Synth" that's probably similar.

The second song uses Picked Bs. from Roland Super JV JV-1080, Harmonica from Korg M1 and Pizzicato Str from Roland Sound Canvas.

The third song uses Picked Bs. from Roland Super JV JV-1080, Legato Flute from Roland SR-JV80-09 Session and Vibraphone and Steel-str. Gt from Roland Sound Canvas.

There no expansion cards either.

@dj4uk6cjm i don't need the vst, since i got the hardware version and at least it it have a expansion card kind of thing.

I do wish the VST can include all of the roland expansion card waveforms.

I put together an early test remaster of Ryu's SSF2T theme using all the instruments I had available. It's still missing the bass drum, second synth brass and the quacky synth from the JD-990, and I haven't done a lot of fine tuning in volume balancing, envelopes, vibrato and such, but it's sounding promising.

Resident evil 2 & jojo font? by Zetto Kuzuuya at 8:21 AM EST on December 30, 2017
I have a thread for this but I wanna ask here too, since most n64 games used sequenced music along with original playstation games, can anyone see if they can rip and make a soundfont for resident evil 2 and jojo's venture? (Jojo's Bizarre adventure heritage for the future arcade port btw)

@palto_alto, it might be part of the roland 770 strings sample cd or the jv1080 orchestra card.

When i was trying the VST for the JV1080, for some reason the flitters don't sound right.

I wanted to talk about the Jv1080 and i recently try it and i am quite disappointed with it tbh.

This is coming from someone who uses the real jv1080 there were some things that disappointed me with it.

There no expansion cards presets sadly, they did not included them for some reason.

I did wish they actually did like they did with the Sound Canvas VA which included all of the SC 55 to SC8820 presets.

There no general midi bank sadly, if you guys want to try the VST to see where the GM bank.

Sadly it not in the VST instead it was replaced by a JV2080 bank that is known as Preset E.

Which was cool to include it actually, i still want the GM bank presets for it.

The flitter sounds really choppy compare to the original JV1080, like some of the presets sound different from the original JV1080

Last and at least there no support for SYSEX sadly and a USER Bank to make custom presets.

What it is pros?

Well it included all of the JV1080 original presets excluding the GM bank.

It does included the JV2080 presets.

It a lot easier to edit.

Some of the sounds are very faithful to the original JV1080 and a lot more clean then the jv1080.

Overall not a bad VST, i do feel like there should be some improvements to expand the sounds a lot more.
