PS Vita by the_miker at 2:37 PM EST on February 27, 2012
Anybody have any luck messing with Vita files yet? I know it's brand new but I've already seen a pkg extractor floating around. Apparently it only works on early beta and retail packages 1.00 or lower though. Sony has since changed the Vita keys.
Would love to know what audio formats Vita games are using, and eventually get a rip of Hot Shots Golf.
Let me guess. They use 16-bit, 44100 Hz, two-channel PCM (streams stored with a lossless codec) because the goal of developers is to continually progress the fidelity of video games as an art form.
The really artsy ones use dynamic sequences with high-quality voices (FM?) and mixer.
Well, don't think we'll see any PCM just yet. Based on what I'm seeing in the PSN store, game sizes aren't all that impressive. In fact, they're PSP game sizes (>2GB). So I'm expecting ATRAC3/plus (or GASP! ATRAC9!). Maybe some HCA (ADX/AIX/AAX is probably dead, especially to Jap devs). Maybe some PS ADPCM if we're lucky.
Nono guys, to have the games play music at all, the Vita needs to be constantly connected to the Sony servers, which stream the audio directly to you from their magnetic stereo master-tapes.
Sorry, gotta run now because I still haven't renewed my sarcasm-license.
