Has anyone even attempted reverse engineering MGS1's driver and sequence format?
by Nisto at 4:30 PM EST on February 6, 2016
I just took a whack at it for a couple of hours.

First off.. I did some digging around and found an extractor and a thread regarding the DAT/DIR files. The contained files may require a bit more work to properly dissect everything. But I think all music is in STAGE.DIR.

Also, I change my mind about the data probably being compressed/encrypted, based on the fact that the model data apparently isn't. Also, TCRF has a dump of debug text which shows where it stores "song data" in memory (801E0000), so I copied the data at that address and searched the disc for it and sure enough, there it is. It looks like the sequence format doesn't have any obvious identifier.

I'm not quite sure about the sample/instrument data though. I dumped all RAM (including SPU RAM) while WARHEAD STORAGE was playing and judging by what PSound found after a scan, it seems at least that song doesn't have any dedicated samples. It seems to use one single bank ("init") for most/all songs, similar to Final Fantasy VII. I could be wrong about all this though.. And I still have no idea what the actual instrument format looks like.

EDIT: 0xFEFF = End of Track

One down...

I'm just going to say this.

Why are there so many rips of so many games, with literally NO CLUE as to how to actually play them?

For example, there's no actual clue as to how to play xwma files. Why should I have to search on how to play them, and search for plugins? You don't buy a microwave meal, and have to search on Google on how long to heat it up. The instructions are on the packet. So, why are there so many virtually unplayable rips with no clue on how to make them not virtually unplayable?
by Dais! at 8:38 AM EST on February 7, 2016
because rips aren't microwave meals, they're bulk foods. They (usually) don't come with instructions because it is assumed you wouldn't be obtaining them if you didn't already have a pretty good idea what you were going to do with them.

It's not an ideal way of dealing with the archive, but it is the most practical. Some kind of additional details index or wiki would be nice, but it would require a whole lot of work, especially for a relatively small group of users who might find themselves in trouble if more attention were to be drawn to this site.

As for xmwa files, check this.

So I downloaded the MegaMan Battle & Chase .psf rip and I can't get the files to play in foobar2000. There's a custom driver I see, but hell knows how to use it.

Guess I'm stuck in the bulk food bin, huh?
by Kirishima at 2:39 AM EST on February 11, 2016
@Master_E

The problem is this set uses an older version of Markgrass's generic psf driver. It needs to be updated, but that's probably gonna take some time. Otherwise, untick "Suppress Opening Silence" and manually skip 1 minute and 10-20 seconds in for music to start playing, or use a different psf plugin/player.

I'm sorta surprised that the pc version of beyond good and evil's wad/m/a files are not supported in vgmstream. Were these ever supported in some player, or did I was my time to attempt ripping them?

@Kirishima Try the XBox360 HD version instead. It is lossless.
by Kirishima at 1:15 AM EST on February 20, 2016
@vajuvaju

No it's not. It uses that proprietary compressed format that was common on the x360. AFAIK, no true lossless version of this soundtrack has been released, whether it be in video game form or an ost.

@Dais!

I was going to put up a rip of the Nests saga some time ago (they're just adx), but got lazy. I ended up not sharing them because there were lots of files with duplicates to sift through, and they somewhat butchered kof99's arranged tracks. I doubt they would be added to the archives now since hardly anything has been added recently.

If you want just 2001's arranged tracks, I can upload them for a short period.

Soushuu Senshinkan Gakuen Hachimyoujin (2014-02-28)(light)
Soushuu Senshinkan Gakuen Bansenjin (2015-04-24)(light)

Little did I know until a week ago just how badass Keishi Yonao is. Tracking down the tool to get these was a bit of a pain, but it was totally worth it in the end. Everything from Hachimyoujin is still in Bansenjin, so I removed the duplicates.

The in-game version of Tougen Bansenjin is... weird. It's a semitone lower than the OST and has a neat minute long intro. I haven't found any other song that's different.

EDIT: Wow, I found the real Tougen Bansenjin... and four other songs that were not in the usual BGM place (data1.dat), but rather in data5.dat with a duplicate bgm folder, but with these five songs added!! Some of them are duplicates but without fade-outs at the end of the song... I don't know, it's weird. I don't think songs in this game loop at all, but oh well. Songs here should be added to the Bansenjin pack.

EDIT EDIT: I'm so wrong it hurts! Among the Hachimyoujin duplicates in Bansenjin's data5.dat version of the bgm folder... There's version that very obviously should loop! Looks like light didn't utilize ogg's loop information though, and must store loop data separately somewhere else. I'll have to look into this, but for now I'll leave everything here as is.

That's a really outdated version of DSE.

Latest at https://github.com/droidmjt/Droidsound

Sometimes bugfix versions are posted in the issue tracker but not the home page: https://github.com/droidmjt/Droidsound/issues

DSE tends to be buggy though. It's also proprietary, likely GPL-violationg.

Err, Vector Harbor, the .snd files of Hyperdevotion Noire are just renamed OGG Vorbis files.

I can open them with GoldWave for example and they show up as Ogg Vorbis with 48 kHz. And the waveform is listenable.

Before I opened them in GoldWave, I checked them out with Notepad++ to see if something is written in the header, and there was "OggS" written and "vorbis".

So just rename them to .ogg or .oga and open them with your prefered media player.

by AceK at 5:14 AM EDT on June 23, 2016
@Vector Harbor

Were the files for BBCP [PC] renamed by chance... or were the files unaltered? I'm only asking because the PS3 version would use file names such as:

bddata_2121.segs_000_btl_rg.at3
bddata_2242.segs_900_btl_rg_old.at3

I can understand omitted names such as anything with bddata and segs... but instead the names are completely changed to their actual in-game BGM names/OST names:

Rebellion II.wav
Rebellion.wav

Similar to consoles, it uses .at3 (only that the files are using .wav as a file name extension).

I'm not asking how to play it (already mentioned above that it's atrac3 just like the console version. A simple file name extension change can fix the playback problem).

I'm asking if the file name prefix for the bgm tracks in the PC vgm rip provided were altered.
by Vector Harbor at 9:04 PM EDT on June 23, 2016
Well there are basically are in Wav format after the extraction but in poor bitrate (142Kbps). He just rename the file.

@Vector Harbor - Just remove the bytes before "OggS"(using your hex editor, of course) and after that, rename the file extension to ogg.

The Deus Ex Human Revolution pack posted to this thread has invalid .xma files. They have nonsense in their RIFF headers, such as having 16 channels, or having negative 1 billion average bytes per second. Maybe pay attention to the RIFF WAVEFORMATEX structure when writing the headers?
