Knurek, any chance you could do a rip of Castlevania: Harmony of Despair (PS3/360)?

I'm pretty sure there used to be one over the HCS64 tracker, but I can't seem to find it there or on any of JoshW's mirrors.
by Dais! at 10:26 PM EDT on March 15, 2013
wait, all previous Atelier games? Does that include the handheld titles like the GBC, Wonderswan and GBA games? Or the Mana-Khemia games?
by banshiryuu at 11:32 PM EDT on March 15, 2013
Seems like it, I don't know about complete tracks for every single game, but it does seem like every game is here; GBA, Wonderswan, DS, you name it!

Also yes finally I can have my elusive looped version of Number One Daughter of Carrot Village <3

It loops a bit different than it actually does in Viorate, but eh, I'll take it!
by Knurek at 2:08 AM EDT on March 16, 2013
@banshiryuu: Have you tried the PSP port of Viorate? Should have been uploaded during the last batch.

@Dais!: Mana Khemia games are Atelier 8 and 9 and as such are included. Ditto on the handheld games (and some other ones too, which I can't identify).
by banshiryuu at 2:52 AM EDT on March 16, 2013
Ah, no I haven't gotten around to it and honestly I totally forgot about it lmao

Lemme see what it does...

Yeah, the PSP version of the song loops just like the original PS2 version, and they changed it in Ayesha.... hmmm.....

Do the Atelier Judie tracks sound like the soundtrack album or the PSF2s? I'd be quite interested in getting the OST tracks looped.
by Mouser X at 1:21 PM EDT on March 16, 2013
If it's mainly laziness, I'd be willing to do the necessary renames (adding format and/or extension) if I were given necessary access (I obviously wouldn't need upload access. And since it'd only be renaming, I wouldn't need "removal" access either - thus protecting against accidental deletion, although unlikely that would be). Though, I'd also need the right software, which I expect would be some kind of FTP client, and I'd need a way use the DAT files (the last time I made an attempt to use the stream rip DAT files, it ended up being a waste of time. I'm sure I was doing something wrong, but if I was given instructions, they weren't clear). I assume VGMToolbox is the program I'd use to read the DAT files? How? Just drag+drop?

It's probably difficult to read it, but I do really appreciate what you've done. It's no easy task, is time consuming, and requires a lot of patience. Not to mention bandwidth and storage space. So although I most likely sound like I'm complaining a lot, it's mostly because I don't have the time to sound nice (which is in and of itself rude). Like right now.... I'm late again. Mouser X over and out.
by Knurek at 1:52 PM EDT on March 16, 2013
@Josh W: Is there still sufficient space on the server for me to upload the PC set? It's roughly 110 GB at the moment.

@Mouser X: Sorry, but in all honesty, if I would be interested in that feature, I'd add the data myself. I'm not. If Josh W is okay with adding you FTP access, that's okay with me, but be warned, I will not maintain your changes at all - any set update uploaded by me will not retain your additions.
by Josh W at 2:59 PM EDT on March 16, 2013
@Knurek: Sure. There is enough space on the server to keep uploading stuff 'til i tell you otherwise ;)

@Mouser X: I'll get back to you later, i'm a little busy now.
by banshiryuu at 6:31 PM EDT on March 16, 2013
I'm not sure when it's supposed to be released because I haven't been following Ayesha much, but is the music for DLC areas going to be ripped once they come out here? I'm only asking because I can't seem to find the one song I was looking for (this one that I can't find anywhere else: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm18961327) doesn't seem to be in the current set.

EDIT: Oh well, two minutes after I post this and I find it hiding in the bonus folder lmao

Welp, that answers that ^^;

JoshW: It occured to me later, that the easiest way to do this rename, is to have a method of getting a directory listing (listing *only* file names) as a text file, and then using that to create a BAT file (or similar scripting for Linux, since that's most likely the OS you use, IIRC) to do the renaming "for" me. This would allow me to do the renames from my PC, rather than having to be logged in to do them. It would also be faster for me, as I wouldn't have to individually select each file to rename it.

So, my questions are, "How do I use DAT files?" and, "How can I get a directory listing (specifically of file names), preferably in TXT format, of the files on the server?" With those questions answered, I should be able to, at the very least, provide a BAT file pretty quickly. That way, you could run the script yourself. I wouldn't even need an account. And with it being a renaming script, since Knurek has no intention of continuing the inclusion of the format data, it should be easy to maintain the renaming script, which could then maintain the filenames.

In fact, with that thought in mind, it seems plausible that a program or script could be constructed to use the DAT files to automatically do the renames. Though, doing *that* is beyond my capability. So, as already mentioned, I'm willing to create BAT files (or Linux scripts, if someone told me the commands I need to use for Linux) which you could then run.

Anyway, hopefully a file name listing is easy to generate (it is in DOS, but the only method I've ever used includes file information, dates, attributes, etc., which is a pain to clear out when all you want is file names). I think the format data is extremely useful, and look forward to being able to aid in its inclusion. Mouser X over and out.
by Knurek at 3:24 AM EDT on March 18, 2013
I will save you some work and tell you that DAT will only give you file extension. Which doesn't tell you much, really - look at .WAV. It can either be raw PCM, various forms of ADPCM, ATRAC3 or ATRAC3+, Ogg Vorbis and just about any other format out there.

Oh, and some games like to mix and match formats, so a game can have 20 MSFs with PS ADPCM, one or two with PCM and rest with ATRAC3.

The only proper way to have the complete information is to go through the complete set, one track at a time, and note which formats are used.

Which should give you a better understanding as to why I don't really want to do any of this. Way too much work for too small of a return IMO.
by Josh W at 3:36 AM EDT on March 18, 2013
that's easy

Here you go :)
by JILost at 12:44 AM EDT on March 19, 2013
Shouldn't the PCM files be included in the Lunar: Eternal Blue rip on smd.joshw, since they are playable in foobar?

Likewise, if vgstream cannot yet play them (although I think it can), shouldn't that capability be added by now? Or am I missing something on both fronts?
by Knurek at 3:27 AM EDT on March 19, 2013
Can you share the PCM files? I can't upload something I don't have. :)
by JILost at 6:31 PM EDT on March 19, 2013
Did you want the ones that have speech along with the music or only the files with only music? For that matter, what about ambience, like wind blowing, etc.? I'm guessing we're going strictly music, but I don't want to remove anything if we're going for completeness.

So, I got a PM on FFShrine, which said this:

"Saw that you had a thread on hcs asking "If it was possible to rip 3DS music" from a while back... It's been two years, do you know if it's possible yet because, I can't find anything new on the topic? I really just want to rip LM2: Dark Moon Dark Moon, you know?"

So, the short question is, what's the current progress on 3DS music? Has there been any almost-successful rips of a single piece of music from a game, or anything at all?
by soneek at 10:21 PM EDT on March 27, 2013
Would we be able to have an archive for Android and iOS game rips? I've extracted music from these two games that are on both platforms, but specifically extracted from the Android versions.

Oh, and there are some new rips here and there, someone asked for AssCreed 2/Brotherhood to be ripped, and since I had the games on Steam, did so in some free time.

Have fun.

PC Music thoughts by Yoshinkeru at 10:43 AM EDT on April 6, 2013
Looking forward to seeing what else is added to the PC music archive! I kept hoping Mirsoft will come up with the sets I want as well, but this looks a little more promising!

I went ahead and grabbed 3D Ultra Pinball: Thrillride; I had tried to rip music from that game myself, but only got a handful of tracks, what seems to correspond to 2-6 + 8-9 in your list. However, in the downloaded set, tracks 5 and 8 seem to be incomplete--they cut off before the entire track plays. (5 should be 1:12 and 8 should be 0:57) (I'm also suspicious of track 12 being short as well...)

Then again, it has been implied before you are not the original ripper, so I don't know who to complain to about this. I keep hoping someone on here knows who to forward these little messages to...
by Mario Kinnikuman at 8:16 PM EDT on April 6, 2013

Is Tokyo Jungle a special format of some kind? Using VGMstream from like a week ago, the files don't work at all, but some of them load time data. I'm using a slapdash portable installation of Winamp but it has been able to handle other streaming stuff I've thrown at it.

Is this some variant of the thing that's going on with most PSP music? I mean, you can just tell me yes if that's the case, I roughly understand it. I just don't necessarily recognize it when I see it.

try downthemall for firefox, it might solve your problem
by Mouser X at 2:07 PM EDT on April 14, 2013
The Mega Man: Network Transmission set is broken due to a poorly thought out (and obviously untested) choice in naming convention. It's a dual-file format, and whoever renamed the files to the OST didn't understand how such files work. As such, they put the "L" and "R" into parenthesis, which not only doesn't match previous naming conventions, but also breaks dual-file support.

To remove any questions, I did extract the files first. I tried to play them in Winamp and XMplay (using r1013 of VGMstream, IIRC. I'm pretty sure it was from 4/1/2013), and foobar2000. In every instance, the files played as mono. Could this please be fixed? And since you can search the XML files, can you please fix it in any other sets that might name dual-file sets so poorly? I'm surprised that something so obvious could have been missed by whoever named the set. They must have listened to it to name the set, so why didn't they notice that their naming method broke the files?

Anyway, I felt that this was important information, and that it needed to be fixed, both for this set, and any other sets that might have this problem now, and in the future. Thanks in advance for looking into this problem. Mouser X over and out.

By the way, I noticed there's an outdated version of Mario Kart Wii on there, too.

Brawl problems by Yoshinkeru at 1:40 PM EDT on April 15, 2013
I think this was touched on previously: I still think that whoever ripped and/or packed the Brawl music can improve it merely by renaming the files to something much shorter instead of trying to include each and every artist/composer information in the filename. I still can't copy C09, even when I put it on the root C directory. (How did one save those long filenames, anyway?)
by Mario Kinnikuman at 6:45 PM EDT on April 15, 2013
I agree. The long file names are causing issues, like when I try to extract the entire archive. I have to do it per file, manually, on the file names that are too long.

I'm glad they're comprehensive, at least.
by soneek at 9:07 PM EDT on April 15, 2013
Perhaps for future rips, we can "tag" the files by leaving them with the original file names, and then include a batch renaming file. Same goes for files that are labeled with an ogg extension, but actually work as logg.

I have a thing about leaving file names as is, just in case people are trying to insert custom music and have the original names as references.

by Dais! at 3:27 AM EDT on April 23, 2013
I noticed neither the psf2 nor the PC archives featured Chaos Legion, so I looked at a few copies of both versions. I haven't had any luck with the PS2 releases (although I think I'm missing something somewhere), but it seems the PC release stores the music as IKM files in a conveniently labeled directory.

The IKM files themselves are curious - I understand why they're divided as they are due to the vaguely dynamic music system the game uses (it's not very interesting or complicated), but I'm unsure why the files are in this IKM format. As far as I can tell, they're just vanilla OGG files with a 48 byte header attached:

http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/9/1/1401201/st01-1.ikm

Can anyone tell what the point is by looking at the header? It means nothing to me, so for all I know, it's just there to keep you from playing the files in Winamp or whatever, but maybe it has very basic looping instructions or something?

If those 48 bytes do just turn out to be a way of blocking media players, would it then make sense to strip those headers off and rename the files to OGG before the music is distributed as a pack?

Haven't really been keeping up with the emulated music scene for the past few years but something recently possessed me to do a couple more HES rips.

http://www.mediafire.com/?x6d5q4r1k16x4td

In the archive are rips for Arunamu no Kiba and Tenshi no Uta II. Both are timed and have generic tags. Arunamu no Kiba is another game that uses PSG+ADPCM (same sound driver as Fiend Hunter). Tenshi no Uta II has a pretty cool battle theme (first track in the playlist).

Also included is an updated playlist for the Tokimeki Memorial HES. It includes track titles for the Force Gear mini-game. I also noticed that the Radiant Silvergun (Sega Saturn version) ssf set was missing DSP effects so I updated the set with that (was missing an EFFECT_CHANGE command).

Would appreciate it if the music archive could be updated with these changes. Thanks!

HES rips should slot nicely into cmh, whenever it goes live.

Is it Arunamu or Alnam? I've seen both versions, direct romanizations never really were my thing though, so I would gravitate towards the latter.

I'm not sure if you received my email, if not and you haven't already, feel free to visit portable music history, especially given the amount of GBS rips you provided

Thank you, will update the set ASAP.

Please feel free to send CDDA track titles for any other games from PC Engine CD, SegaCD or Neo Geo CD if you have them on hand.

Sorry about this, but I had to update the Gensou Tairiku Auleria rip again. I found 3 more tracks, one of which was a PSG version of "Cavern". After studying the sequence data some more and doing another scan of the ISO, I'm fairly confident now that the HES contains all the PSG tracks in the game.

(link removed, obsoleted by link in next post)

Again, sorry for the trouble.

Thanks for the playlist update and letting me know about the playback problem. It's really easy to get complacent with only testing in NEZplug++, which is extremely lax in HES playback (or any other rip format for that matter). Problem was that I didn't set the global volume for all channels (as the driver itself doesn't do this).

Updated rip (hopefully the last time, *sigh*):

In case it got lost in the previous posts:

Josh, the domain has been unresolvable for the last 24-ish hours
by mogikihei at 9:11 PM EDT on May 12, 2013
Thank you, I was able to play in Ootake.
I ripped the Auleria VGM set, (I am 2ch-H) I want to update the VGM by using the HES, Is that okay?

Servers are down for me, too.
by Josh W at 3:56 AM EDT on May 13, 2013
bugger...

i'll get on it
by Josh W at 4:43 AM EDT on May 13, 2013
Urgh.

The datacenter where the server is located has "major problems"

Their current preferred "fix" is to simply move me to their new data center on a better server, however, which will need all the data to be reuploaded

...which isn't my preference

:(

Update:

It seems that they may have access to the data so, I'm seeing if they can transfer all of the files to a new server at the new datacentre
by marcusss at 10:13 AM EDT on May 13, 2013
Must be a sh!tload of data to move over I bet ;-)
by soneek at 10:16 AM EDT on May 13, 2013
Took me about 10 hours to rsync 200 GB worth of data when I was moving my own site to a different server the other day. Considering how much stuff was on Josh's server, we may have to be really patient.

Server seems to be up again. :)
by Josh W at 5:44 PM EDT on May 13, 2013
Seems to be.

But thats the old server. Im starting to rsync the files, then do a switcheroo.

@mogikihei: Sure, go ahead and update the VGM set (no need to ask me for permission). Thanks a lot by the way for all the VGM rips you have released.

I have a few more HES rips and an update of one I previously did:

http://www.mediafire.com/?cky36d5pd01y9w0

Contains:
Seiryuu Densetsu Monbit (updated with many more tracks)
Sotsugyou - Graduation
Sotsugyou 2 - Neo Generation
Sotsugyou Shashin - Miki

That's probably it for now as far as HES ripping goes unless there's a certain title that someone wants me to take a look at.
by Knurek at 2:04 AM EDT on May 15, 2013
Actually, yes.

Hany on the Road HES rip is broken, it's missing PCM drums.

I've switched it with 2ch-H's VGM rip for now, but I'd really prefer emulated rips if possible.

On a similar note, Koei's games would be nice to have as well.

Aoki Ookami to Shiroki Mejika - Genchou Hishi (TCD)(1993-09-30)(Koei)
Nobunaga no Yabou - Bushou Fuuunroku (TCD)(1993-02-27)(Koei)
Nobunaga no Yabou - Zenkokuban (TCD)(1993-12-11)(Koei)
Sangokushi III (TCD)(1993-10-01)(Koei)(Naxat)(Koei)
Super Mahjong Taikai (TCD)(1992-12-28)(-)(Koei)

Also, if you ever get the bug to do more GBS/SGC ripping, I'll obviously welcome each and every rip with open arms (no need to time them, even, I can handle that). I'd really love to see Moldorian: Hikari to Yami no Shisutaa ripped, the game sounds really lovely based on OST recording

Well if emulated rips are preferable, I could try to do HES rips of PC Engine CD games with VGM sets. Ones that use the system card driver shouldn't be too bad to do at least. Although I feel that my time is better spent doing rips of games that don't have VGM logs. As far as listening goes, I personally don't prefer one format above the other.

Here's a SGC of Moldorian:

http://www.mediafire.com/?igvin90361dyy21

I had to teach myself Z80 again, but otherwise the rip didn't take very long to do. The game copies its sound driver to RAM and plays from there which was pretty weird.
