@marcusss: unfortunately there are times where you either find the same thing on other console releases or worse quality stuff on PS4. For example, Injustce on PS4 uses the same banks from PS3 for music. It’s a combination of MP3 and IMA FSB. Nothing unique here.

Ahh yes sometimes they are lazy or rather budget driven but it is always disappointing to see when games are released on a new of fairly new machine graphics gets improved but not audio at all. or worse. So far though most music in atrac9 sounds better than the pc (vorbis) releases of games so that is a positive ;)

.. but maybe that is just me and my ears.
by kode54 at 8:17 PM EST on February 22, 2018
It may sound better because they make it louder? It's not necessarily worse at 128-192kbps.
by marcusss at 12:20 AM EST on February 23, 2018
I think with atrac9 they use reverb or something as it seems to have a more powerful effect.
by bnnm at 3:29 PM EST on February 23, 2018
Another thing worth considering is the encoder, it contributes a lot in the final quality I believe.

Seems Xiph's encoder evolved a lot so it's possible different games use older/worse encoders, though I'm not sure how Sony's ATRAC9 encoder could be noticeably better.

For example XMA seems like a good format but in my tests the encoder produced strange artifacts with very simple frequencies.
by bxaimc at 5:31 PM EST on February 23, 2018
When it came to last gen stuff, I often preferred XMA over its AT3p counterpart, for example, MvC3. I felt as though XMA sounded a bit more “clear” and AT3p sounded a bit more “muffled”

by marcusss at 7:44 PM EST on February 23, 2018
I also thought most games using xma audio sounded sry well.It would be cool to hear how well the xbox one sounds some day when it is cracked.
by AnonRunzes at 8:47 PM EST on February 23, 2018
so basically i just found out that your usual ATRAC9 file is encoded with 17.5khz cutoff frequencies. how the fuck is the "ATRAC" brand still ongoing is a mystery, because with the way these codecs were programmed to the point of resulting in low-quality audio even at the highest bitrate possible(132kbps in ATRAC3, 352kbps in ATRAC3plus, 504kbps in ATRAC9) you'd think it would have been discontinued much earlier.

as for XMA1/XMA2 the whole thing was based on WMA Pro, which in itself is quite an interesting attempt to deliver a "high fidelity" coded by microsoft to address existing issues with the original WMA codec. although opus is a much better codec than this one, it's not "ATRAC" levels of pure trash.

If only HE-AAC v1 & 2 were open formats...

HE-AAC has by far the best compression-to-quality ratio, it even sounds great at 24kbps!

At 32kbps, the cutoff is at ~20KHz which is absolutely incredible for such a low bitrate.

I'll post Lossless, HE-AAC, ATRAC, WMA and Opus versions of a track to compare!

New 3DS rip:

by MiToGen at 8:28 PM EST on February 25, 2018
First time posting. But hey @bxaimc, you were the one to do the Gran Turismo 5 rip, right? Would you happen to know if Gran Turismo 5 Prologue could be done the same way? There's a few exclusive tracks on there that didn't carry on over to GT5. Would appreciate any response; tried doing it myself with a CFW PS3 but hung myself up early.

Also worth noting is that the digital version of GT5 Prologue uses the proprietary file system completely unpacked, whereas the disc version stores its contents in the Volume file similar to the rest of the game series. I've had zero luck with the digital version.
by bxaimc at 8:49 PM EST on February 25, 2018
Ooooh. Yea I did the GT5 rip. I can look into it some time if I can find the game somewhere in the interwebs unless you’re able to provide the game files. If you can’t, that’s fine but yea I’m interested in it.
by Sephirothkefka at 11:04 PM EST on February 26, 2018
@MiToGen You can try to use a WH16NS40 Blu-ray drive to read the discs back. Its the only Blu-ray drive I've had luck with that can read PS3/4 discs. Not even my Pioneer BDR-UB211K UHD drive can read them.
by bxaimc at 9:48 AM EST on February 28, 2018
It’s still AES crypto’d if you try to dump it from the drive on PC.
by bxaimc at 2:53 PM EST on February 28, 2018
@MiToGen: no luck with the digital version. It's all crypto'd too. Maybe I'll have some luck with the disc version's vol file. Hopefully its the same structure and crypto key as GT5 or GT6.

Any clue how do you rip this music?

Thank you for all.

@mensinhl: Nothing particularly difficult about it, decrypt the game, extract music data from BGM.AWB.
by mariofan12ify at 6:49 AM EST on March 2, 2018
Is it possible to rip the music from the Kirby Star Allies demo?
by bxaimc at 8:08 AM EST on March 2, 2018
At the moment, no. Much newer games require more private methods to dump and decrypt so unless something comes up, I wouldn’t expect any major rips for switch for a while.

by bxaimc at 12:35 PM EST on March 2, 2018

Insane to have 700+MB of music in a demo.

by bxaimc at 1:06 PM EST on March 2, 2018
@mensinhi: I think I have a better chance with the PS4 version. No one seems to have a dump of the vita version. There is conflicting information but generally for vita, you need to have cfw running and some additional software for dumping and installing games to the vita. They must also be able to decrypt the games on the console.
by Knurek at 12:56 AM EST on March 3, 2018
@bx @mensinhi
No need for Vita anymore, everything can be one on PC.
You just grab the game's PKG file from PSN, convert it to a NoNpDrm rip and then decrypt it using the key provided with psvpfstools.
by ifrit05 at 2:11 AM EST on March 3, 2018
@bxaimc: I didn't include the car songs (tracks from older FF's).

If you want it to be more complete then go ahead and upload yours with those tracks included.

(I am listening to the pause/menu screen on loop for like forever, it's so good. Plus, who can ever hate the Prelude/Crystal Theme! :P )

The set below is missing a .PSF file.

WWF SmackDown! [Exciting Pro Wrestling] (2000-03-02)(Yuke's)(THQ)

Here's the .PSF file in particular that's missing. I was unable to find a working link (including mirror links) for PSF Driver Upgrade Utility v1.0... so I've settled with using Generic Sequence Driver Utility Version 4.2.1.0 to generate the .PSF file, which uses Mark Grass Generic Driver 4.2.1. The rip was done using the US version of the game.

I have 2 problems.
1 for sd gundam, i have extract the pkg and i find that the music format is in cpk, so what software can extract the music.
for the 2, super robot wars V, it music format is in awb, what software can rip it to at9?

Any help.
by Ultrafighter at 9:44 AM EST on March 4, 2018
Hey AceK, thanks for this additional track! And I'm wondering if "Know your role" misses some sequenced stuff or not... Maybe you'd like to check out the 2nd Smackdown! installment? I'm interested in any updates / additions to the set for that game.

Or probably we should team up and make some use of *.VB/*.VH pairs coming from Thrill kill? I think all the victory jingles are in that format and I've not figured them out yet; it seems something more is still needed for VGMT to create valid playable files. Any suggestions for a total PSF beginner?

See you!

@mensinhi: you can use CriPakTools for the CPK. For the AWB, check if there’s an ACB that corresponds to the AWB. Then use VGMToolbox on the ACB. If not, just use it on the AWB itself. It should be under Common Archives -> ACB/AWB extractor.
by marcusss at 11:02 AM EST on March 4, 2018
Can't wait for the updates. I added plenty of ios rips and some pc ones. Recommended ones are kingdoms and castles, Meltdown [pc ver.], Robot Tsunami, Royal Bounty, Spiral, Chess of Blades. Til Mornings light and Stellaris Apocalypse update.. Just a few recommendations. Lol

Anyway enjoying all the music everyone has uploaded recently.
Everyone has been busy ripping I see. PLENTY of sfuff coming from Ultrafighter so can't wait mate :)

Just recently got power back due to the strong wind storm and being powerless for the weekend so I’m a bit delayed right now.

@Ultrafighter

It was a theme used in CAW mode, so it felt odd that it was missing from the .XA files given from the set. Pretty sure the WWF SmackDown! 2 set is complete (may probably check sometime this week to really make sure, but everything seems to be recognized).

Making PSFs with the files given is not that bad in most cases (those minor exceptions being ones that has a complicated VFS and/or uses a custom driver.)

What you need from the game itself:
• .VH = Instrument header (tags for audio bank organization & controls [ie: velocity/pitch/etc.])
• .VB = Instrument data
• .SEQ or .SQ (sometimes .SEP, but handles differently than .SEQ/.SQ... can be converted from .SEP to .SEQ/.SQ) = Sequence data

What you need to make "use" of the files from the game to make a .PSF:
• Generic Sequence Driver Utility (GenPSF_v04_21)
• Any program that can playback .PSF files using in_psf plugin.

VGMToolbox should work too, but never got around to using PSFs for it. With everything above in check, open the GUI application above (Generic Sequence Driver Utility) and just click on PSF tab on the menu bar, and redirect the sequence/header/sample files to the proper directory designation. You don't have to alter with the Parameter or the comment section below ("length=3:00.000").

Type a name for the new PSF file on the line provided (match either the directory information from the game or with the song title given from a song [URLs such as VGMDB helps. Highly advise to not use YouTube as a source since they may use custom/made up tag names]). Click save to make the new PSF, and it should be located where the original audio/sequence key ingredients were located.

@bxaimc
Hope everything is alright and that you are safe. Take your time.

Well AceK, now this is some worthy guide and pretty detailed instruction you've got here! It'd be really useful if I got that far but unfortunately finding SEQ\SQ\SEP\whatever proved to be the most difficult part. I checked entire disc structure for those extensions and even tried scanning some archives \ bigfiles for contained instrument \ sequence data (using VGMToolBox & its Misc. Tools=>XSF Tools=>PSF=>PSF Data Finder) but it was only able to discover a few additional VHs, nothing else. This is where I stopped and was left with just freshly ripped streamed tracks in my hands.
Maybe I gave up rather quickly but anyone else is still welcome to take the shot at this game, I'd be the 1st to check out whatever they can come up with in terms of PSFs from Thrill kill. The more complete the set gets the merrier it gets, isn't it?

BTW here's a new rip: Manhunt (Xbox)(2004-04-20)(Rockstar). Couldn't understand why vgm.hcs64.com upload form couldn't even add it until I saw that "file size limit" LOL... Anyway maybe this host is also fast and good, probably it'd be more convenient for someone to grab the set from there.

So long!

Edit: here goes another release, an enormous multi-layered and truly full-flavored whopper of a giant soundtrack - let me introduce you a complete & proper rerip of Amped 2! It doesn't only feature tons of additional tracks (not just from videos) but also tweaked / improved tags to songs (but all given filenames were preserved too, it's not like that older rip where all BGMs were renamed thus losing original titles entirely) and so on.
It's the best it's gonna get I presume and this insanely huge compilation of compositions totally deserves it! Check it out!
Later!

PS. I uploaded it there because it's more comfortable to have one file instead of two, plus I didn't want to try and figure out if I should split archive or it's gonna be less than 905 MBs anyway and there's no need for splitting in the 1st place. I think it'd bother no one to download from Google Drive, am I right?

Nice to see N Sane Trilogy up on the server now. But the files don't seem to loop, are they not supposed to?
by bxaimc at 9:32 AM EST on March 6, 2018
Many FSBs don’t contain loop points because they’re just E to S loops.
by mariofan12ify at 10:11 AM EST on March 6, 2018
Ah, that makes sense.
by Basillica at 12:54 PM EST on March 6, 2018
For an RPG Maker rip, what do I do for tracks that are played slower in-game, or tracks with very short loops?
by Koto at 2:09 PM EST on March 6, 2018
@bxaimc: Unfortunatly doesn't seem the case. The loop by putting the same file twice is far from perfect. In fact, all the songs have a tiny silence at the beginning, but deleting it is not enough to avoid some clipping. Maybe the loop points are stored somewhere in game's audio data?

Anyway, thanks for the rip. These remixes are pretty awesome.

See ya

by bxaimc at 5:53 PM EST on March 6, 2018
@Basillica: I’d say include them anyway. Music is still music.
by mariofan12ify at 1:14 AM EST on March 7, 2018
Well, it turns out that someone has datamined the Kirby Star Allies demo and posted the music files as well. Don't ask how they did it, because I have no idea.

by bxaimc at 8:57 AM EST on March 7, 2018
I’m not surprised. With more documentation popping up and advancements with homebrew now possible, it was only a matter of time. Even though these are wav conversions, it’s still something until a real full game rip is done. BFSTM isn’t exactly a very common folk format.

Candleman: The Complete Journey [PC]

The Crash N. Sane Trilogy rip doesn't loop smoothly, yet it seems to be seamless in-game? I wonder if the loop points are hardcoded into the game somehow. There might be nothing we can do about it
by bxaimc at 7:58 AM EST on March 9, 2018
That might be the case.
by marcusss at 5:21 PM EST on March 9, 2018
Some more rips.

* Super Lucky's Tale (2017-11-07)(Playful Corp.)(Microsoft) [PC]

* TimeSplitters Future Perfect (2005-03-21)(Free Radical Design)(Electronic Arts) [XBOX]

* Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom (2010-11-23)(Game Republic)(Bandai Namco) [XBOX360]

TS 3 is weird as it contains music from all 3 TS games with 1 and 2 being 44100 Hz but half of TS3 music is 44100 and the other 32000 Hz..not just cut scenes are 32000 Hz unfortunately..but the cutscenes are cool and there are 3 or 4 music tracks not on the ost..maybe endings or beta or something since I don't remember them in the game when I last finished it..songs loop properly which is a plus when compared to the OST.

A few more later.

Guys, I can't thank everyone here enough for what you guys are doing for VGM history. This work should be taken as art, really, thank you VERY much!

I would like to request a rip from a mobile game called "THE RHYTHM OF FIGHTERS", a King of Fighters spin-off. Since its servers got shutdown, it seems impossible to get a rip, but maybe some of the wizards that do miracles around here could shine a light on it. Thanks!
by bxaimc at 9:40 PM EST on March 9, 2018
Can’t make any promises but if one of us manages to get it done, alright then :)

by simonmkwii at 9:29 AM EDT on March 11, 2018
@rcsb - Here you go!

The Rhythm Of Fighters

Complete with every single sound effect, voice clip and music file (excluding DLC): Download from MEGA

The files were originally in ".rof" format, but they were just standard OGG files, so I changed the extensions accordingly.

Hey BX, I posted 2 new sets here (the very last message on that page), a brand new rip & a long-pending rerip and maybe they simply went unnoticed (that's quite possible because I edited my original message once or twice to add links to those releases). I just thought it'd be way better to point out those sooner than later so that they're not buried under a dozen or two of pages until next update announcement is posted.

And Bnnm, your Blowout set looks really interesting & I'll grab it as soon as it's checked and added to VGM Archives. A friend of mine shared a few PS2 samples with me years ago (supposedly all MUSIC_HVY_L0*.VAG ones) describing them as the best thing since sliced bread but I didn't quite like those tracks back in the day. It's more than possible that my opinion's going to change after such a long time, it usually happens this way.

Oh and 1 more question to Bxaimc: may I upload my rip of Rainbow six: Vegas 2 (PC version) straight to JoshW.info if it's 100% OGG this time? I guess it's not a strike of any kind if I extracted Vorbis streams out of SS0 bigfiles and didn't wait until initial banks are supported by plugin.
In any case I've already backed up given Ubi archives so that if you want to include those in a JoshW set of the title instead of *.ogg files just let me know and I'll link you to that upload.

Cheers!

PS. Back to Blowout: I see there's Xbox & even PC ports in existence so those might have significantly higher quality than PS2 or GC (it's typically the case with Terminal reality VGs). Chances are I didn't enjoy select tracks from PS2 ver. much "thanks" to their horrible quality (like 22KHz mono horror!). I'll wait 'n see if GC audio's better in that regard...

@simonmkwii Thank you very much!

Let me share some information about it.

As soon as I asked for it here, I started searching the app data on the internet and managed to find some data files that I was able to decrypt and find the files you shared. I didn't know how to handle them as you did, but dropping them on Audacity did the job.

This game has some unique arrangements of SNK's music, composed by their original composers. I was informed about it by Takushi "HIYA!" Hiyamuta himself, Metal Slug series composer. So yeah, I was pissed that their servers were down, so I couldn't get the game data.

My curiosity about this game was that the "rip" on YouTube was very low quality audio, while the track previews SNK posted was pristine. I wondered how the game audio sounded like, because I wanted the best quality possible. So yeah, I was pretty dissapointed that the game audio is highly compressed, with the songs peaking at 15kHz.

Well, about the music contained in our data, it's just the music contained in the 1.0.0 version (complete song list for consultation). It has the following packs: "BASIC TRACK PACK", "Slot Machine Pack", "METAL SLUG2 Pack", "FATAL FURY 2 Pack" and "THE KING OF FIGHTERS '96 Pack". The other packs were added on the updates. I've managed to find some data from the updates, so I'll try to upload a more complete and organized rip.

By the way, did you just renamed the files to turn them to ogg?

@rcsb - Yes, they were just renamed to ogg.

By the way, you might remember the tracks sounding better in-game. That because they did! It used a special interpolation method to simulate CD-quality audio.

I can process them and upload them if you'd like!

Hey guys, it's been a while! Finally got my computer fixed, so I can make rips again! Here's some of the stuff I was gonna post before the crash happened:

PC

8DAYS

Dark Noid

Delver

Final Directive

Hostil

Next Up Hero

One More Line

STAX

Where Are My Friends?

Wonder Boy Returns

PS3

Playstation Move Ape Escape (Figure I'd reup this since SGB/SGD files are playable now. Didn't have time to sort out the files though, so sorry about that!)

Sakigake!! Otokojuku: Nihon yo, Kore ga Otoko Dearu! (Oddly, I found the music folder only contained several duplicates of the same (goofy-sounding) song. Not sure if that's supposed to be the case, but there you have it)

Vita

Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Masou Kishin III - Pride of Justice (Wasn't sure how to split the SXD2 file, but I guess it's not really necessary at this point, is it? XD)

More to come!
by Ultrafighter at 10:58 AM EDT on March 15, 2018
Hi Billy, it's nice to have you back and know that your probs have been sorted out! Practically every 2nd PC user (or every one for that matter) encounters troubles that prevent him from using computer the way he used to (or even turn his machine into a good-for-nothing box for a few days or whole week) so that I can understand what you probably felt during that forced freezing of all your activities...
Anyway I'm glad to see you're active again & I hope you won't have any more issues in this year!

And BX, do you think this mysterious in-house "Custom AFS/VFS File splitter", the one manakoDE (he's known as ManakoAT now... I presume?) used to rip Mortal kombat - Shaolin monks (PS2 version), the one which is mentioned in ripinfo.txt here, can be reacquired, reproduced or maybe replaced by a dedicated BMS? Can the person be reached these days or not?
The reason I'm asking is simple: I'm ripping Xbox ver. of this game and apparently it's structured exactly the same (I was sorta hoping for MSX archives similar to those from MK: Deception or Armageddon but alas!). Some kind of scanner for AFS banks contained in other bigfiles would be most useful in our case (if I get Manako's scheme for naming individual tracks right then there should be a dozen or two of *.afs containers inside each GAMEDATA.WA* and there're 8 (!) such files in total. That's why it'd be time-consuming & bothersome to try & cut them all out by hand.
Anyone able to provide suggestions or come up with any solution for my current predicament? I'd be glad to hear them out!

Best regards!

Something I noticed from the Guilty Gear XRD (PC) rips... some songs do not contain loop pointers. Very few, or maybe even just one song has it(BGM_ChallengeMission).

When observing the extracted .upk file of interest, Main.SoundNodeWave is the file we want that contains the audio data/loop data.

In this Main.SoundNodeWave, subtracting offset 0x0000002C from the "beginning" point of the .ogg header consist of 32-bit little endian loopstart pointer (and it seems like the loopend point is absent/assumed to be EOF of the .ogg itself).

Revelator set may not have to be concerned since it seems like none of the tracks contain loop pointers. If anyone was interested:

BGM_ChallengeMission.ogg
LoopStart: 204377
LoopEnd: 7122362 (EOF)
