FFVII Remake by JLHack7 at 10:18 PM EDT on July 3, 2020
The FFVII Remake has an 18khz cutoff?

"Look how they massacred my boy"

The hilarious thing about UE4 having an 18KHz Cutoff is that the vast majority of players for Unreal Engine games are under the age of 40 and capable of hearing sounds well above 20KHz.

Music by PrinceSnake at 2:34 AM EDT on July 29, 2020
Hello,

Could someone please try to extract music from these games ?

Very Little Nightmares - Android (music is soo great!)

Little Nightmares Complete Edition - Switch (a lot of music is missing from DLC not published on the original soundtrack).

Dreamfall Chapters (All Books) - PC/PS4

Heavy Rain - Steam (maybe quality of music files will be better).

Thank you so much,

Maybe it's already noticed and mentioned here. If you are on 'https://vgm.hcs64.com/' and click on 'Atari Jaguar' in the menu bar and than try to download an entry there by clicking on it you'll get something like 'jaguar.joshw.info could not be found'. Can this please be fixed?

Sorry to pester, but I submitted my rerip of Mister Mosquito's soundtrack nearly a year ago and it has yet to be added to vgm.hcs64.com. The current rip is at a completely incorrect playback rate so it's pretty important that it's replaced with this rerip. If anyone could make sure this gets added to the database I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

.bgm + .bgmkey by pooruser at 6:26 PM EDT on August 23, 2020
There are two new uploads to 'https://vgm.hcs64.com/' by user 'grj1234', Nanami to Konomi no Oshiete ABC (2003-12-26)(Studio Ring)[PC].7z, and Oyatsu no Jikan (2004-12-24)(Studio Ring)[PC].7z.
Both contain files with the extension .bgm and a RIFF-Wavefmt-Header, and in addition a .bgmkey file. Foobar2000 and XMPlay with vgmstream plugins can't play those files correctly, and in the vgmstream documentation I can't seem to find a line about support of .bgmkey, as exists for .adxkey, .ahxkey, .hcakey, .fsbkey, .bnsfkey, nor can I find another player program for .bgm + .bgmkey in the internet, nor an email address to ask the uploader directly. Is there any chance that playing of these files can be added to vgmstream? Thanks in advance to all interested.

By the way, I just contacted Mr. Gashlin because of many wrong data shown when clicking the square with the three dots behind the entry of an upload line on 'https://vgm.hcs64.com/', and sent him a list of such failures for the massive upload of 20-08-20 which he would pass to the folks on Discord. The new upload from 'grj1234', 'Oyatsu no Jikan (2004-12-24)(Studio Ring)[PC].7z', is the next example for this inconsistency, you'll get an info about 'Buster Ball (GG)(1992-03-20)(-)(Riverhill Soft).7z' instead when clicking on the square with the three dots, but can't download it, 404 Not Found. So you have to download the right file from the main entry (that is possible), but without any info about the files and the file formats in the archive that you get then. Maybe help is on the way from Mr. Gashlin's efforts.
by bnnm at 4:16 PM EDT on August 25, 2020
@JomSpoons - your rips may be overlooked unless you upload them here: https://vgm.hcs64.com/upload/

@pooruser - there is no .bgmkey support, it's what the ripper used to indicate audio is encrypted (xored), I'll think about how to support.

Wrong data is a known bug and the person that handles vgm.hcs64.com is datschge.

.joe files by pooruser at 10:37 PM EDT on August 26, 2020
@bmmn - Thank you very much for your reply and your clarifications. Is it naïve to ask if you think of vgmstream supporting an xor decrypting procedure as described by almendaz, https://hcs64.com/mboard/forumlong.php?showthread=61256&showpage=0, with the help of an xor key? Hopefully looking forward in every case.
If datschge already knows about the data(base) bug I’m quite sure there will be a remedy, sooner or later.
Please let me point to another issue, concerning .joe files. Nicknine has updated the vgmstream .joe format support in May 2018, https://hcs64.com/mboard/forum.php?showthread=8687&showpage=181. And there have been changes to vgmstream in June 2018, https://hcs64.com/mboard/forum.php?showthread=8687&showpage=184. But since then one game no longer played with vgmstream, NYR - New York Race (2001-11-16)(Kalisto)(Wanadoo)[PS2]. Unlike the other games’ .joe files, here you’ll find FF FF FF FF, starting from offst 0C hex. Versions of vgmstream before could play those files, last good I could get hold of is foo_input_vgmstream (r1050-1327-g311eeebc).dll and xmp-vgmstream (r1050-1327-g311eeeb).dll. So I have to replace the current dlls by the old ones if I want to listen to this game’s files (and back after finished).
And there is another single .joe file that doesn’t play in vgmstream at all. It’s from ‘Counter Terrorist Special Forces - Fire for Effect (Europe)’, not uploaded to joshw.info. Nevertheless, I dare to say that BzrPlayer – or should this program not be mentioned here? - using an older vgmstream library version (which one?) can play it, after some silence in the beginning. I don’t know if there is a site for uploads of single files to vgmstream just for bug inspection and would be grateful if I’ll get a hint.
Sorry for pestering again.
Updated DSF rips of Skies of Arcadia [Eternal Arcadia] by Taikocuya at 7:28 PM EDT on September 4, 2020
Hello to everyone,

I updated the two DSF rips of Skies of Arcadia. Unfortunately, there was a clipping problem with some tracks during playback in foobar2000. kode54 was so kind to update the SSF/DSF Decoder to fix some of the volume issues associated with the low pass filter. At the same time I had to adjust the maximum volume in my rip again.

I strongly recommend to install the latest version of the SSF/DSF Decoder in foobar2000 and use the latest version of the rip.

• Skies of Arcadia [Eternal Arcadia] (2000-10-05)(Overworks)(Sega) (fully tagged and timed, includes Victory and Discovery Found themes)
• Skies of Arcadia Trial Edition [Eternal Arcadia Kuuzokuban] (2000-03-06)(Overworks)(Sega) (fully tagged and timed, includes some never heard beta tracks)

Maybe anyone can upload this to http://dsf.joshw.info/s/?

Best regards,

Taikocuya
.hlwav, fake extensions by pooruser at 8:29 PM EDT on September 5, 2020
@bnnm - Thank you very much indeed for fixing '.joe', I forgot to quote that it was the track 'Shut01' of 'Counter Terrorist Special Forces. Fire for Effect' that had issues. No need to upload it any longer for a probe, all seems to be fine now, as is with 'NYR. New York Race'.
Let me please come up with another issue. I thought situation with '.hlwav' regarding 'Half-Life 2 (2005-11-15)(Valve)(Electronic Arts)[Xbox].7z' (on joshw.info) to be similar to former '.joe' for me. Last good were vgmstream build r1050-2410-gead9ec4f-215-g02efa7d7 and fb2k build r1050-2637-gd871302c from 2019-11. But now I found with the help of Google that '.hlwav' has been removed as fake extension by NicknineTheEagle 2019-11-18. Alas, I couldn't find the suitable replacement for it, as Google doesn't show it, instead leads me to LoSnoCo's site where I would have to sign in not knowing if it’s in there. No RIFF / RIFX WAVEfmt header, so no '.wem', no '.lwav', also '.vgmstream' and '.pcm' don't work, same with '.txth' with codec = PCM16LE, interleave = 0x2, sample_rate = 22050, channels = 2. And I don't know of any other extension whose files come with the same or a similar header. So I either have to change the vgmstream dll builds as it has been with '.joe', or again use BZRPlayer with an old library build, or sox with a command line like cmd /k play.exe -b16 -esigned-integer -c2 -r22050 hl1_song11.raw, e.g., or GoldWave with corresponding settings.
I managed to notice the change of extensions from ’.khv’ to ‘.vas’, there may be others that I don’t know of, but I see more fake extension candidates to be removed in the vgmstream docs.
Does it really make sense to remove the support for them? There are some new fake extensions beginning with an ‘l’ so that vgmstream can catch them, ok. Regarding picture format extensions, look at 'mac = macp = mpnt = paint = pnt = pntg', you can be glad if your picture program supports them all and you don’t have to find out which one is the right one and then rename it. And if you saved those fake extension files to CDs or DVDs, you’re duped when using the latest vgmstream build. Would be nice if my objections were simply considered and the fakes were just documented but not removed as keeping them really doesn’t hurt, IMHO.
Sorry for not complying to ‘short is beautiful’.

Edit:
Forgot to enumerate Audacity, being able to import and play hlwav files as raw audio.
.hlwav, fake extensions by pooruser at 5:07 PM EDT on September 6, 2020
EDIT (2):
Sorry, just discovered the replacement extension of '.hlwav' for vgmstream is simply '.raw'. Should have found that before looking at Audacity and SoxPlay replacements. And the sample rate in vgmstream is 44100 Hz. My plea for keeping those fake extensions supported still remains.
Pokemon Picross GBC rip naming by Zumi at 1:46 PM EDT on September 12, 2020
Hey, I have recently ripped and uploaded a GBS of the newly-surfaced Pokemon Picross for the GB/GBC as "Pokemon Picross (Prototype) (1999)(Jupiter)[GBC].7z".

However I was told that this was actually a finished product (that was never published), so the "(Unreleased)" tag would work better with it, instead of "(Prototype)". Would you mind renaming it when it's added?

Thanks in advance.

Example file sources by pooruser at 6:21 PM EDT on September 29, 2020
Big thanks to all the hard-working uploaders and coders for every new set of ripped game music and making all that playable with vgmstream. Please let me come up with another request.
Whenever I read the latest vgmstream changes on https://hcs64.com/mboard/forum.php I find line entries beginning with – Add .. / - Fix … / - Tweak … and so on, usually followed by names of games and platforms, with more information on https://github.com/losnoco/vgmstream/commit/... This is immensely helpful for someone who doesn’t own all the games and can’t afford buying them, so he can search the net, especially on xxx.johw.info or in the Vgmstream, Xentax, Zenhax fora, or find a rom download. But very often, at least for me, no file examples are obtainable without special knowledge I don’t have. But the coders must have some files at hand, and sometimes I find uploads concerning the updates a little later.
Please look at Mr. Fusik and his team curing for retro graphic formats with their program Recoil. With every update a file ‘examples.zip’ is provided containing lots of demo pictures for their work. That would of course be too much work for vgmstream, but is it barefaced, illegal, too extensive to ask for more pertaining info in case of rare file formats added? I’m rather curious if I’ll get a serious answer, other than ‘If you don’t have it you don’t need it’.
by bnnm at 12:08 PM EDT on October 1, 2020
Main problem about uploading examples is that music files take a lot of space. My personal sample library is enormous so I don't even know where could be uploaded.

Most formats end up in joshw anyway, and the frontend has a "tags" option where you can search by extension, plus I always try to list games and extensions in the changelist so it's easy to cross reference.
Opus by JLHack7 at 9:10 PM EDT on October 1, 2020
Is it just me or does Opus suck for music encoding?

Like, in the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 soundtrack, songs like Leftherian Archipelago (Day) have popping and cracking in the audio that doesn't show up when played ingame.

Is that a problem with VGMStream, Droidsound, or Opus?

And the Smash soundtrack on switch sounds way worse. Yes I know they were using ADPCM before, (I dumped my own copy of SSB Brawl back in the day), but it just sounds worse than when I reencoded the old smash soundtracks in OGG or ADX back in the day (before Droidsound-E was a thing).

by MoldyPond at 10:36 AM EDT on October 2, 2020
@JLHack7 Smash Ultimate sounds bad because the files are literally only 64kbps. Samurai himself mentioned it shortly after E3 2018, saying that they “had found a new audio compression technique that allowed them to save a lot of space and resources without being able to hear a difference”.

He’s definitely not an audiophile :(

file format examples by pooruser at 8:27 PM EDT on October 4, 2020
@bnnm - Once again thanks for taking the time to read and answer my question. I really appreciate your and the other coders' enormous work and regard it as a first class cultural preserving contribution and an offer to get in touch with hidden treasures, at least for the older people like me. And I don't want to molest you with additional work.
So I'll content myself and continue to use the tags on joshw's frontend and the crossreference hints in your update information. Maybe in future someone with some spare time will offer a possibility to ask for particular rare file format examples.
by bnnm at 4:56 PM EDT on October 5, 2020
@pooruser - I mean, I'd be happy to upload my samples elsewhere, like I could sync the dirs or something. It's just they are like +15GB (and I don't even keep all I fix) so I'm not sure how/what would be a place to reliably host them.
by tatotunes at 6:03 PM EDT on October 5, 2020
@despycl I've been making casual attempts at ripping Tamarin's soundtrack for the last month now, it's proving to be quite a challenge since I'm not able to identify the filetypes. Though it's a niche game, I'm hoping someone more adept than me has a look at some point - it has fantastic music.
by pooruser at 10:39 AM EDT on October 6, 2020
@bnnm - I'm really, really grateful that you do not rule out uploading your samples for common use. But as I can't give any useful hint on a location for that purpose, and as I don't know how gigantic joshw's storage capacities are, I daresay would it be impertinent to address a request to him? Perhaps that would be a big step forward in creating an extended vgmstream data base, and all in one place. Comparable with modland and the like, where you can find much more than 'only' mod files.
Please pardon me for my excessive phantasy in that direction.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV

^Was also gonna do Ys IX, but I saw that was already taken care of. Couldn't find Hajimari either, unfortunately. Ah, how I long for the day when I can finally complete my Trails collection.... anyhoo, more PS4 stuff is on the way!
by Nyarlathotep at 2:43 AM EST on November 20, 2020
There isn't already a rip for "Cobra The Arcade," right? I was curious if a rip would have a better bitrate than the downloads available on the official website which are only 64kbps.

Some more PS4 goodies:

Judgment

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II

Super Bomberman R

Ys: Memories of Celceta (One particularly welcome difference from the Vita version of this set is that the tracks LOOP! :D)

^Right, so about Judgment: I had a bit of a hiccup during the demuxing process and couldn't properly extract the English audio for one of the movie files (the movies are dual audio), so only the JP version of that particular file is included in the set (I'll try to give it a proper rerip in the future, rest assured). On a related note, I included all the Japanese cutscene audio with the rip, but left out the English side (which has its own separate folder). Still, if anyone wants, I wouldn't mind posting the EN files in a separate upload (only reason I didn't do it this time is because the set would be about twice as big as it already is, lol). All that aside, enjoy!

2dx + 1 and more by pooruser at 7:41 PM EST on December 7, 2020
Hello everybody,
not too sure if it’s already time for Christmas wishes, but here I have a few.
To begin with, the new uploads of beatmania IIDX bring back long yearned-for by me file format examples .1 + .2dx. Such have been uploaded to tracker in 2010 as Beatmania IIDX 17 SIRIUS (2009)(KCET)[Bemani PC Type 2][MS ADPCM][2DX 1 - 2DX9 - SD9] by bxaimc, see https://hcs64.com/mboard/forumlong.php?showthread=11089&showpage=8, but I wasn’t on tracker and couldn’t get it. And if I’m not mistaken they once have been playable by vgmstream, see https://git.lopez-snowhill.net/chris/vgmstream/-/blob/3be505428a3574feb9c9ee893a4942fb860779c7/src/meta/2dx.c. But now, alas, no go, at least for me. And .2dx, other than .2dx9, doesn’t show up in the current vgmstream formats.c. May I stand in line for (new) playability?
Have I missed any progress for uploads of .bgm + .bgmkey, Nanami to Konomi no Oshiete ABC (2003-12-26)(Studio Ring)[PC] [[bgm + bgmkey]].7z and Oyatsu no Jikan (2004-12-24)(Studio Ring)[PC] [[bgm + bgmkey]].7z? bnnm wrote ‘I'll think about how to support.’ Please don’t feel pestered in any way, just a question.
Concerning my proposal for sample uploading, https://hcs64.com/mboard/forumlong.php?showthread=26929&lastpage. I was very glad to get bnnm’s answer: ‘I mean, I'd be happy to upload my samples elsewhere’. And I was naïve ernough to think of something like samples.joshw.info. But then I learned from kode54 and bnnm, ‘Nobody has the power to add more subdomains’ and ‘We can't change anything related to subdomains’, https://hcs64.com/mboard/forumlong.php?showthread=61807&showpage=0#post_61817. So if there’s still some willingness to think that over then please let me point, e.g., to https://samples.ffmpeg.org/, https://samples.mplayerhq.hu/, https://telparia.com/fileFormatSamples/, the last mentioned being widely used by http://fileformats.archiveteam.org/wiki/Main_Page. That site has displaying problems at the moment. But of course I don’t know anything about relations / possible tensions between the vgmstream team and the guys of the other locations. Only a hint.
That’s all for today, big thanks for all improvements and struggles thus far.

@pooruser: 2DX is just a cointainer for multiple 2DX9 files, the ones in the IIDX archives host backing tracks + keysounds for the .1 sequence files.
Read the note.txt included in the archives on how to play them (for now).
2dx by pooruser at 5:59 PM EST on December 8, 2020
@knurek: Thank you for your quick reply.
I already noticed .2dx is sort of archived subsongs finding several entries ‘2DX9’ and ‘RIFF … WAVEfmt ‘ in the files.
Tried to follow you pointing to ‘note.txt’. Couldn’t find a pre-compiled 2dxrender.exe on github or elsewhere, though, and no skills how to compile it from the files in the downloaded 2dxrender-master.zip. Python 3 is installed, and as I am on Windows I tried several combinations with ‘cmd /k render_songs.py’, e.g. ‘--songs-folder NAOKI --output-folder NAOKI --music-database-file (what’s this, the .1 file or the .2dx or what else?), with and without path for the folder NAOKI. As I thought according to the help shown on github and in the README.md, but obviously with no proper understanding. All to no avail, garbage in – garbage out. My error message: ‘Traceback (most recent call last): File "c:\a\render_songs.py", line 1, in <module> import argparse ImportError: No module named argparse’.
Could you please give me hints on a suitable command line? Or else I just have to wait and hope for support of the format by vgmstream in future. Nevertheless, I repeat my thanks.

@nbisbo: Oh, please let me call you a good Samaritan. As nobody else found enough time or interest to reply to my plea, you showed me the light. Have been to 2drender on github a while ago, then there was no executable, but now there is. And it works, I was able to convert to mp3, at least with Windows 10. Alas, not with Windows XP, there I only got error messages. Doesn't matter. Big thanks from an old man, all the best for 2021!

Hello @Reis
I'm on a Quest to rip and explore the files inside RPG Maker 3, I would like to see If I can do some changes on this game,
I've been digging for the data extractor plugins for this game, I came across your post and @snakemeat 's
Do you still have the Extractor Plugin ? ... The link is old and broken ... please can you re-share the file that @snakemeat
provided you back in 2015?

Hi Reis, here's a VGMToolbox VFS Extractor plugin to extract the RPG Maker 3 data: https://www.sendspace.com/file/m3s3f8

CDIMAGE.TBL is the header file
RPGSP.DAT is the data file.

It will extract .IAB BGM files which are supported by vgmstream."

Golf Paradise .psf2 by pooruser at 8:43 PM EST on February 1, 2021
Hello everybody,
can't find any postings for that, so has someone ever had same problems like me trying to play the .psf2 files of 'Golf Paradise DX (2000-12-24)(T&E Soft)[PS2].7z' (joshw)? Found another upload called 'Swing Away Golf [Golf Paradise] (2000-10-26)(T&E Soft)(Electronic Arts).7z' with partially similar content, can't find nor remember the URL of that. All just doesn't work, not with Foobar2000 foo_psf.dll nor with ZXTune or other players. Bad rip?
by Kirishima at 1:20 PM EST on February 7, 2021
A bit of feedback on the site directories themselves. I can't find games like the .hack series in the psf2 directory they're supposed to be in. I had to search for them from the vgm.hcs side to find them. It's possible they aren't showing up because their name starts with a period.

@ sandmanfan98, if you are still participating in this forum, and to others interested.
Could you, or somone else, please help me with the following issue. On September 8, 2018, you sent a request for support of the above mentioned file format, https://hcs64.com/mboard/forum.php?showthread=&showpage=294. Afterwards this format was added to vgmstream, https://git.lopez-snowhill.net/chris/vgmstream/-/blob/0b7c3ce61eeac60f8c60307f955a5dc63fee3d55/src/meta/str_wav.c. Unfortunately, I missed grabbing the upload from MEGA, and now it’s gone. And seemingly no other files with that format openly available on the net. So I managed to download the iso of that game, extracted the .xen files with wxRipper, then found and applied aluigi’s bms script and got, among others, a real bunch of .data and likewise named extensionless files, but also .wav files (no RIFf header, not playable), e.g. str_lp_menu_music01.data and companion. Nothing works with Foobar2000 or XmPlay and Vgmstream. What am I doing wrong, or, if I haven’t got the right files, could you please provide a working file example? Thanks in advance.

Another problem for me. Forgot my old password for this forum, so had to change my user name a bit, because I coulnd't just renew it with the old one, was always asked for the old password. Did I overlook something or used the wrong login screen?
wav to video game formats by pooruser at 7:58 PM EST on February 27, 2021
Ok, found my old password (issue with changing remains) and can use my old user name again.

On https://github.com/vgmstream/vgmstream/issues/819 I read a request for wav conversion to video formats and a hint to VGAudio by Thealexbarney. There's another program on GitHub, Looping Audio Converter by libertyernie, that can do similar things. As the authors have different names, I don't know if one of them relies on the other. And because I don't dare to sign up on GitHub, perhaps one of the participiants in that discussion may provide the information.

0x38 should be Swapstone Hollow, but I guess it errored while profiling, and I didn't notice it as I was playing Sea of Thieves at the time :(

I'll go through and check the missing ones

The ones I know are missing are SwapStone Circle (when Krystal meets her SwapStone), Boss Galdon, Boss Galdon Pinch, and SwapStone Hollow A.K.A. Early Thorntail Hollow (yet the variation when Krystal is near a totem pole is present, go figure).

Also, 03 is Cape Claw, not Discovery Falls.

@bxaimc Would you mind checking the contributions section on vgm.hcs64.com and clean up the free space for a bit by acquiring some of the rips uploaded by others? I'd like to do a re-rip on Sonic Generations PC and add some txtp's on the HUB tracks, but the free space (currently 300MB) doesn't allow me to upload it (about 700MB).
by bxaimc at 8:18 AM EST on March 8, 2021
That’s not how it works. The current rips in the queue are already on joshw’s server, which is completely separate from the storage space the upload page uses to transfer whatever gets uploaded. Even if the list gets cleared out, the uploader is still broken. If you want, just upload it to GDrive or Mega and we’ll grab it when we can.

If you're still in the process of getting the missing files from Dinosaur Planet, I've also noticed that sparses 12, 40, and 58 seem to be songs that have different variants without some of the instruments. I've also noticed that the item jingles are missing, though judging from how compressed they are in-game, I wouldn't be surprised if they're actually just streamed files. :)
by MurraySkull at 3:36 PM EDT on March 18, 2021
12 - SwapStone Hollow (Early Thorntail Hollow): This is most certainly a dynamic track, however the normal version isn't any different then the track on Sabre-Fox's side, which isn't currently available.

40 - Discovery Falls (Cape Claw): Also a dynamic track, it will need to have the creepy part removed for the normal version. However, it is correct as is for the caverns.

58 - Diamond Bay: This one is actually correct as is.

github issues #830 by pooruser at 11:02 PM EDT on March 29, 2021
@bnnm:

My apologies for referring to an already closed issue on github, https://github.com/vgmstream/vgmstream/issues/830. Really don’t want to annoy you, as I appreciate your work more than I can say. Wanted to sign up to github for posting my mail there, but got only waiting circle endlessly circling without following possible captcha. So I dare to write here.

Mr. Zab obviously took his example files from http://hcs64.com/files/in_cube_samples.zip. As ancient that may be, I don’t think it’s a sin to look at hcs64 examples. Mr. Zab will probably have difficulties to re-rip audio from the games first or get another rip, and will mostly likely not know the names of the games. Please allow me to post some details for my findings here (which off course, you know by yourself).

‘type_astafc - demo11_02.afc’: Vgmstream wants ‘.ast’ file extension.

‘type_gcub - Organ - PA_45.dsp’: vgmstream likes ‘.gcub’.

‘type_idsp2 - LIVE_01_.idsp’: couldn’t find a suitable extension for Vgmstream, but Foobar2000 takes it with the help of ‘foo_adpcm.dll’.

‘type_ish - stm_bgm_B_colosseum1.dsp’ is paired with ‘type_ish - stm_bgm_B_colosseum1.001’, also in the zip folder. For Vgmstream, the ‘.dsp’ file has to be remed to ‘.ish’, and the ‘.001’ file to ‘.isd’. As usual, both files must be placed in the same folder, Vgmstream must be invoked with the ‘.isd’ file.

‘type_whdpcm - Title2V3+K.dsp’: couldn’t find a suitable extension for Vgmstream nor for Foobar2000. For WinAmp and XmPlay ‘in_cube.dll’ still remains. It’s taken from ‘Hitman 2 - Silent Assassin’ for the PS2. On yoshw.info you can get it as ‘.tak’, though I doubt that’s the original format.

As I’m unable to find an email address of Mr. Zab to tell him personally, can you please forward a P.S. to the already closed github issue, just for to help him? And moreover, do you find it worth to add support for the ‘type_ids2’ and the ‘type_whdpcm’ for the sake of dsp format completeness?

Best regards

@hcs: Thank you very much for adding my findings to https://github.com/vgmstream/vgmstream/issues/830. Hope that helps Mr. Zab as well as anybody else looking into the in_cube example files.
You point me to 'the vgmstream thread, for future reference'. If you don't tell me otherwise, I'll take that as 'https://hcs64.com/mboard/forum.php?showthread=8687&showpage=155&lastpage' (at the moment) and hence shall try posting there.

@pooruser

Those samples were made in a time when renaming files and modyfing data was the norm. Rather than bothering with something that potentially nobody will encounter outside that sample pack, it's better that people just post issues of actual games. If one doesn't know how to re-rip they can always request help here.

The point of supporting untouched files with names as-is being, if somebody rips a game and has some folder with audio-looking files and throws them to vgmstream, they should work reasonably often (as long as there aren't technical issues preventing it or wrong files/names made by faulty extractors). Or rather, vgmstream should support audio from real games, not theoretical or non-game formats.

For example I don't know what game uses that .idsp so it's pointless to add something that may not even exist in the wild. I also typically ignore any new format that I don't have multiple samples (generally a waste of time).
Detailed answer by pooruser at 7:16 PM EDT on April 2, 2021
@bnnm (and others)
Thank you, too, not less than hcs, for the clarification of your point of view. The last thing I want to try is wasting your time, because everyone using Vgmstream or this forum can see how much Vgmstream development depends on you (not to deteriorate all the others likewise involved), and how much knowledge and time you’re investing for all the audio formats to play properly, just for the joy of the users and without charge other than honour and thankfulness. In my eyes, a work which can’t be overestimated.

In this forum, I can see users with different emphases, mostly peacefully co-existing side by side under one roof. While the vast majority, of course, with sufficient knowledge is focussing on new rips, partially of the newest games, but also of older ones, not ripped until now (for sure, that all is the basis for all work done here), there are others, maybe less talented in this field, who have other core areas, just asking for music after their fancy, pointing to not playing files or formats, struggling with sequenced music and sound fonts or other issues, and requesting help.

Being not the youngest person here around (78), I come from the preservation department. My interest lies mainly in getting as much file formats renderable as possible, to help everyone in better understanding and appreciating digital cultural history. So, in the graphics area, with my humble skills I recently could contribute to Mr. Fusik’s Recoil by digging up some old picture format examples of some platforms, and then, as a layman, was granted the great honour to help serving as an alpha tester on Windows XP for his latest build (BTW, restoring already dropped XP support, and only one build for Windows XP up to Windows 10!). For me, it’s like seeing old languages made understood and preserved for eternity. May they even be tiny and have been used only by a tiny number of speakers. Who has no past, he has no future. But I don’t want to disctract you or anyone else from fom a different approach. Perhaps I should be thankful not being kicked out of this forum because it’s not about archaeology.

As for the 2 disputed titles not playing in Vgmstream: The .idsp is already out in the wild outside a mere example pack, see Harvest Moon - Another Wonderful Life [Bokujou Monogatari - Wonderful Life for Girls] (2004-07-08)(Tose)(Marvelous)[GC].7z on joshw.info. This upload includes 2 .idsp files not using the usual .idsp header of other Nintendo games starting with Inevitable Entertainment / Next Level / Traveller’s Tails ‘IDSP’ or Namco ‘idsp’. I got the iso file of that game and there are 4 files more, but one of them not playing with in_cube.dll or foo_adpcm.dll. There are more games ‘Harvest Moon … / Bokujou Monogatari … ’ on the net, haven’t checked if they use the same format.

BTW, the .idsp files in bxaimc’s once available (downloaded it in 2012) ‘Star Fox Assault Orchestra Sound Track (2005)(Namco)(Nintendo)(Nindori Music)[IDSP][Custom] [[GC]].zip’ have also ‘idsp’ in the header’s beginning, but other than the Namco files don’t play with Vgmstream, only with in_cube or foo_adpcm.

Uploaded the mentioned files to https://dropmefiles.com/Ona3Y, link is valid for 7 days.

For the Hitman 2 - Silent Assassin file ‘type_whdpcm - Title2V3+K.dsp’ I wasn’t so lucky. Could get the iso file, but then got stuck with the ‘STREAMS.WAV’ where on internet sites it is said to be inside. Nearest approach may be https://forum.xentax.com/viewtopic.php?t=10715, but I couldn’t get the script file there to work. Though, the game has more wav / whd pairs, all audio?

Nevertheless, the formats are obviously known, maybe to hcs or FastElbja and also to kode54. Perhaps one of them is willing to help implementing them in Vgmstream, be it with the help of .txth files, to keep their former work actualized.

Thinking if Vgmstream has come a long way from hcs’ and FastElbja’s in_cube.dll, it would be a decent descendant with a respectful look back to the roots in keeping all the already deciphered formats of its ancient predecessor playable. And the open source code of the existing dlls should make that not too time consuming and laborious for skilled coders.

Still hoping for a positive response, for a difficult customer. Happy Easter to all

Any updates on Dinosaur Planet?
by bnnm at 6:13 AM EDT on April 3, 2021
This forum is definitely about supporting old stuff. It's just, to me it seemed that person only wanted support for that sample pack, as opposed to support for those formats so game X and Y are correctly playable. If one doesn't even know where those come from, what's the point?

In a similar analogy, when people ask me to support single files and doesn't even give the name of the game(s), it's like saying "hi, I found one page of what must be a dead language in a trashcan, please translate". That is much harder (one page?) and less interesting (is that even real?) than, "hi, I found this mesopotamian journal in the museum of whatever", that has a proper context and is much easier to classify and translate and is worth the effort.

As for your files:
- Star Fox Assault "custom" .idsp: fake files, vgmstream has tighter validations and checks fail (bad initial ps). I don't think it's correct to relax them for bad data (helps catching bad rips/unknown variations), so the proper course here would be fixing the files themselves so they become valid idsp.

- Hitman 2 .dsp: most reasonable explanation is, that .dsp is a fake file made from the original wav+whd, the later could be a candidate for support as it's unlikely anybody would encounter the former.

- Harvest Moon .idsp: this does seem like a proper, overlooked format that extracted from an actual game .iso, I'll add next update. See, this is much better than one random single file (if you ever check vgmstream's source code, I always try to document examples and details of each format, for posterity).
Kudos to bnnm by pooruser at 11:39 PM EDT on April 3, 2021
@bnnm:

And again kudos to you, for even more detailed clarification of your stance, for looking at the uploaded files and for the scrutiny examining them. I’m glad you incude old stuff as well as newest games’ music, and fully agree with what you wrote about at least minimal efforts of uploaders regarding game names and more than one accidentally and lonely found file format example. I tried to take care of these requirements for the in_cube samples, though I didn’t succeed as much as I wanted. And your language analogy made me smile with consent.

For Star Fox Assault, I couldn’t and can’t image bxaimc created intentionally a fake format. Maybe it was a preliminary makeshift to get that music played when other rendering was not available. It’s no longer on his site, so he won’t fix it, but can still be played with in_cube and foo_adpcm and there’s no need to add it to vgmstream if you regard it as fake.

Hitman 2: Should I try to upload more whd+wav pairs? In ‘scenes’ folders there are also triples with an additional zip file containing probably graphic, too, and other material in 12 additional file extensions, but one being ‘snd’. The isos are to big for upload, perhaps someone more skilled than me (what’s really not difficult) is interested in trying to rip them, can forward the URLs.

Harvest moon: You kept your word and were so quick that I can play the files with the newest build of Vgmstream already, even the Tv.idsp not playable with the old other dlls. Special thanks.

All in all, thank you for your time and labour answering my requests. I should be quiet for a while to give way for more important issues and other ‘customers’, though still hoping for bgm+bgmkey in Nanami to Konomi no Oshiete ABC (2003-12-26)(Studio Ring)[PC] and Oyatsu no Jikan (2004-12-24)(Studio Ring)[PC], asked for Dec. 07 2020.

Question: What's the best way to play 16-bit, big endian planar PCM files, like those found in Sega Saturn games?
I ask this because the game I've ripped uses planar PCM files for its music, and when I play them in VGMStream, the channels are inverted, i.e. the left channel is the right channel and vice versa. I used txth with txtp, there is no command to reverse channels AFAIK, and foobar2000's DSP is the only way I know to reverse them.

Edit: Sorry if this question doesn't go in this topic.
