Problems Playing USFs and MiniUSFs by Draca at 11:33 PM EST on December 19, 2005
I used to be able to play both formats in Winamp, but now it's giving me an error message. Any idea how I can get these to work again? I like Winamp because I can convert the files to wavs and eventually to mp3s via ModPlug Tracker. Are there are other players out there?

We're going to need more information than that. What version of in_usf are you using? What version of Winamp? What version of Windows? Are you playing them from the archives (there's plugins that do that)? Are both the *.miniUSF and the *.usflib files in the same directory? What version of in_usf was working, and when did it stop playing them?

Basically, anything, and everything that might be useful to know, let us know. As it stands, it sounds to me like the *.miniUSFs can't find the *.usflib files. But, I don't have nearly enough information to be able to tell that for sure.

Anyway, good luck, and hopefully we can get this figured out. Mouser X over and out.

Hi Draca. I'm sure your problem will be solved soon. Just one thing, though : as a rule you should always, when you mention an error message, give the exact content of this error message. It's helpful for everyone who wants to figure out the problem.

Oops, sorry guys. I'll remember next time.

Currently running Windows '98, Winamp version 5.094 (x86), in_usf version 1.0, playing the files from folders on my desktop. The .usflib files are in the same folder as the .usfs and .miniusfs. It stopped playing them around July of this year. It still plays a couple soundtracks, namely F-Zero X and the preliminary rip of Diddy Kong Racing, but nothing I've downloaded recently.

As Vincent said, it would be nice if you could tell us what the error message is. Go to 64th Note's settings (CTRL+P > Plug-ins > Input > 64th Note), and on the right side is a bunch of check boxes. The one on the bottom says "Display Errors" Put a check mark in that box, and click the "Okay" button. Then, try to play some USFs. An error box should pop up. What's that say? I'm guessing it's a memory problem (others reported the memory problem as well) which can probably be fixed by 64th Note 1.1 (if it's the problem I'm thinking it is). You can find v. 1.1 at the bottom of USF Central's page.

Anyway, hopefully we can solve this problem soon. Mouser X over and out.

It says, "Failed to open file <address of the file>" and "Error reading USF".

Maybe u have Virus infected usf or Winampfiles.Tried to install a new version of Winamp and to download a new package of usffiles?

Well, I dowloaded a new version of Winamp and installed 64th note v.1.1, and it's playing some of the files, but it still refuses to play anything from "Yoshi's Story", giving me the same message.

Have you tried redownloading the sets themselves? Maybe there's something wrong with the archives themselves. Also, have you tried running older, and newer, versions of Winamp? Right now, you're using 5.094. 5.12 is what is currently available. Maybe that would help? Also, have your tried running older versions of Winamp? While that is not necessarily recommended (honestly, I doubt it would help, but there's someone else using Win98 running Winamp 2.95, and they're able to play all the sets), it might help pin-point when/where the problem occured. Again, I doubt running older versions will help, but who knows (DrO might)?

Here's a thought. What output plugins (or DSP plugins, or such) are you using? Perhaps the sets you're trying to play are playing back in weird frequencies (some games use like, 21KHz, or something wonky). Not all soundcards, or drivers, or plugins, can handle these odd ball audio sets. What sets, specifically, won't run on your system? Mario Kart 64? Goldeneye? Zelda: Ocarina of Time? Though such a list won't help me figure it out, it might provide a basis from which to work from.

Here's something else you can try. Run Winamp on a "clean" install. That means, reinstall Winamp in a different directory (so that you don't have to delete your old one), and ONLY install the defualts that Winamp comes with. Then, put 64th Note in there, and see if it works. If it does, add in your regular plugins, 1 at a time, restarting Winamp each time, and testing 64th Note. When/if it stops, then you've found hte plugin that causes the problem.

You can also try running older versions of 64th Note. Have you tried running older versions of 64th Note? If yes, what version did it stop working at? If you need links to the older versions so that you can try them out, just ask. I'm pretty sure they can be provided (if not by HCS, then I have most of them as well).

I'm sorry this problem hasn't been resolved yet, but I really don't know what could be causing it. Anyway, hopefully some of this can help somehow. Mouser X over and out.
