Getting Prelim Sets to Play by rebelx24 at 10:18 AM EST on March 14, 2006
Okay, here's a new topic for this ;). I personally have't been able to play USFs, because I use Mac, but I had sent some preliminary stuff to a friend, and he wasn't able to play those tracks. He did have Winamp and 64th Note, but I only gave him individual tracks from several games; don't know if that had anything to do with it, but I don't see why it would. Any help here, anyone? (UNKNOWNFILE, HCS, please put in your two cents ;))
If you only provided the *.miniusf files, and did not provide the *.usflib files, then guess what? You only provided tag info (basically). All the music, and samples, and ect. is stored in the *.usflib files. So, when attempting to play USFs without the corresponding USFLIB, then of course you're not going to get anything to play because actual data you're trying to play isn't present. It sounds to me like your friend is not at fault, but that you did not provide the files properly for them to play. Instead of only giving specific tracks, why not give him the entire archived file (RAR, ZIP, whatever)? Most of them are quite small, and that way you'll know that he definatly has everything he needs to get the files to play.
Also, why do you keep creating these threads? Most of what you've been going on about could have easily been kept in the same thread. If you keep it all together, it keeps the whole board cleaner, and doesn't separate the topics and discussion so much. Anyway, hopefully that helps. Mouser X over and out.
Hey Rebel, is this your first message board? You look a lot like I did when I got involved with my first message board.
If you want, I can give you some tips on how to make yourself a better board member, and avoid being constantly antagonized by the easily-irritated. (I won't mention any names...) Anyway, if you want some pointers, feel free to ask and I will try to help you out.
Thanks for the offer to help :). Never experienced this on other forums...one guy tells me I should start a new thread, the other says I ought to keep it all in one. Geez...damned if I do, and damned if I don't. ;). Anyway, what useful tips can you give me? I'd appreciate 'em. Thanks in advance.
I know what you mean. I have been screamed at while posting at other forums because I did not start a new topic every time I post. (OK, maybe that was an exaggeration, but you know what I mean.) We like to keep it simple here so here is what keeps most people happy. (Emphasis on most...)
1. Try to keep all remotely related info in one thread. All of your USF playing/MP3 conversion issues could all be in the same thread because it is that you rather want to play USFs on a Mac or you want MP3s of those USFs. Either way, you want to listen to the music, but need some help doing so.
If you look, some people basically have their own personal threads. It makes for an easier to browse forum.
Basically, do not start thread after thread when you can just cover all of your issues in one thread.
2. If possible, edit instead of posting multiple times in a row. Editing will bump your thread just as if you posted again.
3. No answer = I do not know or do not care. Either way, people do not post unless they have something to say. (Whether it is something IMPORTANT to say is another issue.) So, repetitive asking will annoy people and make people ignore you.
Also, if we don't at first respond to a post, wait a little while before posting again. We tend to be busy and have spans of time where we cannot find the time to post. (Ugh, real-life stuff.)
4. Be kind, polite, etc. Don't argue or demand service - it doesn't give you a good reputation.
5. Learn to make UF happy. It will impress everyone. :)
These are a few things that I have picked up over the last little while, and I hope that they are a help to you. By posting these pointers I am not saying that you are doing all of these things and annoying the life out of us, but I just thought that I would put them up so others could see them too.
A missing .usflib is most likely the problem, as Mouser suggested. Otherwise tell your friend to check "Display Errors" in the 64th Note configuration, and let me know what error is shown when he again tries to open a miniusf. Do try to keep the new thread creation to a minimum, please.
Yay a search function! No more guessing which page threads are located on.
Do you think that it would be worth it to make the "No usflib" error always active in the next version if 64th Note? We seem to get quite a few questions about this, and I know that at first I thought that the usflib was not needed. After all, if you play SPCs, GYMs, etc. there is one file per track. Why should USFs be any different?
Anyway, I was corrected by an error message that appeared in V0.01 or whatever version that I had, and now I understand how it works. I think that if the error were always enabled that there would be less confusion as to how USFs work. It is just a thought.
Lastly, this is the last post from me in this thread that will be directed at UNKNOWNFILE because I don't want to ruin Rebel's thread. UF, I just want you to know that I am not trying to be mean or anything. After your posts against newbies and that furry thread, I figured that I would give you a hard time for a little while. I have to agree with hcs that you seem very intelligent and you have quite an outgoing personality, but all of that is overshadowed by the cynical/immature remarks that you make. To get down to the point, you will gain more friends and more acclaim if you try to behave yourself in a respectable manner.
OK, discussion over.
Rebel, I thought that there was a program somewhere that would indeed play USFs on a Mac. Maybe XMMS? I can't remember, but I am sure that someone else can enlighten me.
For what my knowledge is worth, not having a Mac, there is no known way to play USFs on a Mac. Darwine has been suggested but supposedly doesn't work yet.
64th Note relies on recompilation for speed. That does not port well. Unless there's an emulation layer which will dynamically translate self modifying x86 instructions into PPC it won't happen. If this does exist, well happy day.
I don't have a Mac to test that on, but the "developer homepage" (http://www.winamp.com/download/mac/) doesn't exist anymore. I very much doubt this would be usable with plugins built for x86 (i.e., all of them). It might be a port of Winamp, but it'd still require ported plugins (if it has plugin support at all).
Ok, so I read Apple's blurb about Universal Applications. It sounds like you just package two versions of the binary together...

Then I read some more about Rosetta...

So are you suggesting that I try writing something for PowerPC using an x86 version's PowerPC emulation? "According to Apple, applications with heavy user interaction but low computational needs (such as word processors) are well suited to translation via Rosetta, while applications with high computational needs (such as raytracers or Photoshop) are not." I don't think this will work well.
I personally have the x86 version of Mac OS X, version 10.4.1, and it is incompatible with most Intel applications. I'm downloading 10.4.4, and I'll see what I can do.
And if you build 64th note for Mac, it should be x86 and PowerPC. Just my thoughts.
