I won to convert the New Super Mario Bros U file (cafe thing.bfsar) into .bfwav and then convert with Winamp. But I have a serious problem with the .bfstm files.. Winamp can converted them but the sample rate is incorrect and very laggy. Especially for Super Mario 3D World and MK8.
by bxaimc at 8:42 AM EDT on October 21, 2014
Huh? How so?
by Mouser X at 9:43 AM EDT on October 21, 2014
This is awesome! But I do have one small request (and it's nothing to do with the WiiU, or even ripping video game audio). Would it be possible, somehow, to list file sizes on the WiiU rips page? My internet access is haphazard at best (non-existent most of the time), so it would be really helpful to know what files I might actually be able to download, and store (my available HDD space is extremely limited as well). I tried to get Hyrule Warriors, but that file is *way* bigger than I expected. It will most likely take me a month to download that one. If I'm lucky....

So, if file sizes could be listed, that'd be awesome.... But not as awesome as the rips themselves. Thanks guys! This is great! I just wish I had some way to get in with the action. :( Mouser X over and out.
by SonicHyuga at 9:58 AM EDT on October 21, 2014
So this isn't just limited to disc or menu items, right? Are eShop downloads possible to search through? I'm looking at you Animal Crossing Plaza...
by bxaimc at 1:01 PM EDT on October 21, 2014
It's whatever crediar can get a hold of.
by ChucklesProduction at 4:29 PM EDT on October 21, 2014
Can't seem to find the prologue movie track for Pikmin 3 in the rip, unless it's just me..
by bxaimc at 6:21 PM EDT on October 21, 2014
Not sure if he included that in the rip. Probably would need to demux the video files (Mario Kart 8 had MP4 video for example) to get that track out.
New Super Mario Bros. U Map Theme by soneek at 10:12 PM EDT on October 21, 2014
I made a custom LWAV with all of the map themes. 10 themes, 2 channels each, so a 20 channel stream. NSMBU World Map ~55 MB
by agu fungus at 7:39 PM EDT on October 22, 2014
I noticed that the Circus BGM doesn't have any echos, so I assume that the echo effect is provided by the game's engine itself (probably an easy way to handle streams with special loop points, same with PDOREMI). The question is, how do I know the delay and decay factor that the game used on the stream?

And thank you very much for the music files. I hope the same happens with the upcoming Mario Kart 8 DLC.

I'm loving the new super mario bros u rip but the only thing I can't find is the loading screen track that plays before the title screen
by Jackano at 6:48 AM EDT on October 25, 2014
So, what's the solution for the buffer / multiple channels not ahndled by winamp?
Disk writing to wav doesn't seems to work either on my computer, and it's fairly recent!
by starerik at 6:54 AM EDT on October 25, 2014
Get a new sound card that handles more channels than your current. Mine only handles 6 at most.
by Jackano at 7:15 AM EDT on October 25, 2014
Yeah that's where we are f***, in fact mine is 8 channels but Hyrule Warriors title theme is 10!
Anyway, it kinda works but it's tidious. Disk writer as wav/raw works, and Audacity can open the file and mix them.
NSMBU by Hiccup at 10:34 AM EDT on October 25, 2014
Is that rip from NSMBU, NSLU or the disc that has both?
by soneek at 10:35 AM EDT on October 25, 2014
The music files for NSMBU and NSLU are identical.

by froggestspirit at 12:31 PM EDT on October 26, 2014
So what's the ripping method? Line-in, or data rip? I'm guessing something like the Wii's BRSTM?
by Kurausukun at 2:15 PM EDT on October 26, 2014
These are all data rips. Line-in is logging, not ripping. Also, BRSTM, BCSTM, and BFSTM are almost exactly the same.

edited 7:22 PM EDT October 26, 2014
by froggestspirit at 6:51 PM EDT on October 27, 2014
How does one get to the data? I know Wii and Gamecube rips usually required ripping from the console. IIRC it wasn't as simple as popping the disc in a computer
by bxaimc at 3:19 AM EDT on October 28, 2014
Same idea. But the resources for doing so aren't publicly avaiable yet.
by TheSkeletonMan939 at 11:35 AM EDT on October 31, 2014
Has anyone ever figured out how to properly play back the sequenced music files for The Wind Waker HD? I'm certain that it's possible, as it seems as though for the original Wind Waker they were able to piece together an unused music file that was sequenced.

edited 4:41 PM EDT October 31, 2014
by Franpa at 11:43 AM EDT on October 31, 2014
Ah, figured out how to play all the Nintendoland songs, previously several of them would error out. Unfortunately most still seem to be missing some instruments (Or is that a limitation of the format implementation in VGMStream and support is still getting worked on?). Perhaps I'm just misremembering what the songs sound like in-game.

For those curious about how I got all of the songs to play without error:

1) Install the WUMPAS plugin to enable OpenAL output support in Winamp.

2) Download OpenAL_Soft and copy the included OpenAL32.dll file in to the exact same location as the Winamp.exe file. If you don't want to run the OpenAL_Soft Installer (which presumably replaces the file in the System32 folder, which might not be desired), you can simply open the EXE file with 7zip and extract the OpenAL32.dll file without executing the installer.

3) Open Winamp and configure it to use the OpenAL output plugin.

4) Enjoy! May fix issues of certain files in other file formats not playing too. I assume the problem is some tracks use many audio channels and the default output renderers (including original OpenAL) don't have any way to down mix the audio to stereo, so the audio engine crashes.

Note: OpenAL & OpenAL_Soft will break fast forward functionality in most game music plugins, including vgmstream. Unsure why it does.

Note 2: OpenAL_Soft seems to only produce mono audio, or at the very least, a very narrow sound stage. Better than not being able to play the songs at all, right? You can easily switch back and forth between DirectSound and OpenAL_Soft and only need to use OpenAL_Soft when necessary.

in any case... I still didn't find what I'm looking for, so does anyone have the super mario 3d world sound effects collection? would be awesome! thanks :)
by dj4uk6cjm at 2:58 PM EDT on October 31, 2014
I haven't had much time to dwell into this yet but are any of the sequenced files from the Wii U games, specifically Wind Waker HD have any MIDI characteristics at all and/or could be converted to midi? I don't care about the samples to be honest, just if the music is sequenced like bms. Oh and Happy Halloween.
by TheMygoshi at 3:28 AM EDT on November 1, 2014
I ripped the songs from Mario Kart 8. Some of the files are created with 4 channels. (mh.. i remember BrawlBox..). How to open them ? Not just one file ?
by TwinkTickler at 9:40 AM EDT on November 1, 2014
Use either the vgmstream command line or if you're more of a GUI kind of guy use foobar2000's Quick Convert option by left clicking the bfstm and choose .WAV then open it in audacity.
by LaniKai at 12:54 AM EST on November 9, 2014
Great work on ripping the music! You guys are incredible! Though I've got a few questions. In the Mario Kart 8 folder, there's a bunch of BARS files which I assume are the voices for the characters. Are there any ways to open or play these files?

Also for vgmstream, I'm unable to modify the settings that create the dump files, like the number loops, fade out seconds, etc. Can anyone show me how to work that? Because every time I try to open vgmstream (test) by itself, it opens for a fraction of a second then closes.
by Franpa at 7:48 AM EST on November 9, 2014
Open the program via Command Prompt.
by crediar at 4:21 AM EST on November 11, 2014
Before anyone askes, currently it's sadly not possible for me to get any music from DLC content.
by TheMygoshi at 10:18 AM EST on November 11, 2014
Why ?
by Kurausukun at 11:23 AM EST on November 11, 2014
That's a shame, but I can wait. In the meantime all I'm really waiting on are rips of Sonic Lost World and Smash U when it comes out.
by TheUltimateKoopa at 2:03 PM EST on November 11, 2014
The obvious answer to the "DLC content" question is "it's not out yet", but I'm sure it's not as simple as that.
by starerik at 3:31 PM EST on November 11, 2014
There is DLC content for other games which is already out.
by crediar at 5:13 PM EST on November 11, 2014
I didn't want to get to technical but why not.

Should be known by now that all stuff is encrypted.
On the Wii U you basically have a file that contains an encrypted key which you decrypt with the common key.
The decrypted key is then used to decrypt a title/game.

Disc games have that file with them on there.

DLC you can't just get that file from their servers.
Since it requires a valid client cert and probably you have to prove you own the title too.

A different way is dumping that file from NAND, which currently is not possible either.
by crediar at 3:44 PM EST on November 12, 2014
Well I guess you can ignore what I said :)

Added Mario Kart 8 DLC 1 music!!!!

nope he already has it https://twitter.com/crediar/status/532582618798493696
by starerik at 3:52 AM EST on November 13, 2014
Alright, then!
by crediar at 4:09 AM EST on November 13, 2014
I didn't buy Smash yet and here it comes out on the 28th.

I can only get the files from NUS when I know the title ID and this time around they are just assigned in order of requests so i.e.
MK8 is using 000500001010EC00
HW is using 000500001017D900

If there is a scene release I can just look at it and get the title ID.

The other method is capturing packets while downloading stuff from NUS since the content files are not downloaded using SSL.
by (!!!!!) at 4:31 PM EST on November 13, 2014
crediar, can you add the BFSAR from the Mario Kart 8 DLC? Possibly Wii U game banner files too, they have channel menu audio.

Thanks for all of the Wii U audio uploads you have brought as well.

The files I could download didn't include any BFSAR files.

I do have the banner files though: bootSound.rar

Also I got the smash title ID and it will sadly not be possible to get the music early like I did it with Mario Kart 8.

by RandomTBush at 7:46 AM EST on November 14, 2014
If it's not a BFSAR, then it'll probably be a "BARS" file like the majority of the sounds are in.
by crediar at 7:22 AM EST on November 15, 2014
I can only access the update data not the DLC data and we can be lucky that the new music was in the update.

There are some BARS files here is a list:list

by WowZipZipBoomBoomWow at 12:03 PM EST on November 15, 2014
For Nintendo Land, I've searched through all the bfstm files and all the bfwav files I could rip out of lunch.bfsar, but I can't find the coin drop game music.

Does anyone know where this music might be hiding?

And how do I work with that .btsnd file ?

Thanks

I had that same problem. I have a feeling that the coin drop music might be sequenced. The other song missing is the start-up banner music for the game.
by robotortoise at 5:03 AM EST on November 21, 2014
Well I know for Nintendo 3DS games, the startup music is in the exefs. So I'm willing to bet startup music is in some sort of executable.

Also, now that Smash 4 is out.......maybe we can finally get some high-quality rips of the music! (Compared to the crummy 3DS stream quality)
by starerik at 5:58 AM EST on November 21, 2014

by crediar at 7:03 AM EST on November 21, 2014

by TheSkeletonMan939 at 2:34 AM EST on November 22, 2014
Often members of a torrent community band together and form their own group called a "scene". No one so far has been able to dump Wii U games, so if crediar can't I doubt anyone else will be able to for a while.

@Segtendo

I know he does, and it's quite annoying when a loud mouthed jerk-off juggles elephants in the room with a megaphone wrapped around his throat- he's not special because of that, just annoying and one dimensional. If I wanted to hear more unnecessarily blatant cussing then I'd go to the YouTube comment section, wouldn't I? I don't care anymore, I'll just leave him be, this is my last time mentioning him, can't change him, won't try, doesn't matter, end of topic. Period.

My Apologies to everyone.

ANY-WAY, changing to a more resourceful topic. It appears tracks from the 3DS version also come up in the Wii U version, and unsurprisingly, they are in better quality!

So I can't wait for that!

Users have already started in-line rips to hold some of us off for a few days! Whoop whoop!

Everyone should generally read the first post in a topic. Whining about lack of music for a certain game (even if it is a joke), can count as a request, and is also useless here. Discuss it somewhere else, since this thread is mainly about research, and any findings that can contribute to it.

by TheUltimateKoopa at 5:26 PM EST on November 24, 2014
"I remember someone being very impatient about MK8, eh, TUK?"

That was different. That was a case of "people had the files, but were being stubborn", not a case of "the files haven't been ripped yet". In other words, it's a case of "I can but I won't", vs "I can't".

Quick question: If you buy the digital version of a game and save it on an external hard drive. How are the files stored? I suppose they're encrypted but did we know how to decrypt them yet? Or is it not public yet?

Crediar, do you have a copy of the file checksums (MD5 or SHA1) somewhere? I'd like to verify the integrity of the downloaded copy of Wind Waker HD. The file won't open in 7-zip 9.20 and the downloaded archive is 249MB.

You might be using some fancy new compression format that one of the other compression tool companies introduced.

You need the newest version of WinRAR to extract these. He mentions it in the download directory.

"!!WinRAR 5.0 or higher is required to unpack these files"
by Franpa at 2:12 AM EST on November 29, 2014
True, I haven't really been tracking the progress of that tool (Or WinZip) so wasn't really aware of how new Winrar v5.x is. I figured it was just mentioning the version when Deflation compression stuff that Winzip developed, got supported by Winrar.

Yep, Winrar 5.xx worked fine.

For those who don't want to purchase winrar or use a trial version, Unrar supports these... and is free. Problem is it's a command line tool.

Anyone know how to play the .FSEQ, .FSAR, or .Bars files?
by bxaimc at 8:07 PM EST on November 29, 2014
You can't play the FSEQs directly as they're just midi files for Wii U, BARS and FSARS are just archive with potential FWAVS and other data inside of them.

@bxaimc do you know how you would go about extracting the .bars and .fsars ?

* Have not been to this forum in years.
* Beginning to lose hope of ever seeing 3DS/WiiU source files.
* Smash 4 is finally out. No full rip out yet on GH.
* Decide to visit here again on a whim.
* See first 3DS/WiiU files ripped and playable.

You guys deserve all my love.

How do I use VGMStream's test.exe program to create stereo WAV files of surround sound songs, without missing audio tracks? Or does it not support downmixing?

I know it has the option to output Nth set of stereo channels, but that doesn't sound like it will do what I want.

Question is, why do you want all channels to be downmixed to 2 channels? It's just messy with everything playing at the same time.

But if you want that, export it to a surround file, open it in an audio editing software of your choosing and in there downmix it to stereo.

For automated stereo conversion, you can pipe it into FFMPEG and use pan.

test -p infile | FFMPEG -i pipe:0 pan=stereo|c0<c0+c2+c4+c6+c8+c10|c1<c1+c3+c5+c7+c9+c11

Using c0< and c1< (instead of c0= and c1=) will normalize the channels and avoid clipping.
Specifying c0 through c11 will allow you to mux in up to 12 channels. It will still work if there are less than 12 channels.

You can then have FFMPEG output to whatever format you want, with whatever options you want.

You don't always want all the channels, though. Some channels are effects that are added in in certain conditions, some are alternate versions of the track that fade in and out dynamically, etc. Manual mixing is required if you want to handle any of that. Mario Kart 8 has a drum track added when you're in first place, and it's LOUD in the source files but much quieter when the game mixes the track dynamically. Nintendoland has 2 versions of the main themes - the first pair of channels is an orchestral version of the song and the second pair is a chiptunes version. You may want one, the other, both, or both but dynamically faded in and out. For the last scenario manual mixing is required. For the other scenarios you can simply adjust your pan string in FFMPEG to pick and choose what channels you want and at what volumes (e.g., c0+0.5*c2).

Depending on how you're using this (interactive or batch) and how you're declaring your pan string and calling the command, you may have to escape the | and < characters in the pan string (with ^ for DOS) or enable delayed expansion for your pan variable (and refer to it as !pan! instead of %pan%).
