I feel like this should be made clear... anyone can upload to BCM, as long as it gets approved by a mod after submission. Of course, for big games like this, usually a mod gets to it first to assure quality, but generally speaking, you can upload any game music that isn't already there.

by agu fungus at 1:09 PM EDT on April 21, 2015
@soneek
So does it mean that the music from the Mario Kart DLC is in the updates, and the remaining ones (like the F-Zero countdown that I mentioned) is in the actual DLC?

This makes me wonder how the DLC for these games is actually compiled and distributed.
by TheUltimateKoopa at 5:20 PM EDT on April 21, 2015
@Mygoshi:

Each pair of channels is one... er... track.

Usually, with the case of multi-channel streams (like all of Mario Kart 8 course themes) it's set up like this:

The first track is split up into the left and right channels.
Every other pair is split up into two mono tracks. For each pair of mono tracks, click the top track, and select "Make Stereo Track" or whatever it's called. For example:

Track 1 (Left)
Track 2 (Right)
Track 3 (Mono)
Track 4 (Mono)
Track 5 (Mono)
Track 6 (Mono)

On Track 1, click the arrow, and select Make Stereo Track. Repeat for Track 3, 5, 7, and so on. Tracks 1 and 2, 3 and 4, and 5 and 6, etc, are the left and right channels respectively.

Out of curiousity, do the Mario Kart DLC packs have .BFSAR archives? I'm wanting to check the DLC Pack 2 to see if the Animal Crossing course has Totaka's Song in it, but crediar didn't include the BFSAR for it, but I'm not sure if it's because he just didn't want to, or if it was because there simply wasn't one there to begin with.
by Blazingflare at 2:21 PM EDT on April 23, 2015
@Team Fail
K.K. Slider only sings one specific song per season. In spring he sings K.K. Bubblegum, in summer he sings Goo K.K. Rider, in fall he sings K.K. Bossa. I don't know the name of the song he sings in winter.
I tested each variation more than 5 times and he was in the same spot singing the same song every time. Unless there is some super rare chance for him to be singing it, I don't think he sings it.
Also he sings the entire song for each, so I have a feeling that they are sequenced.

The soundfont may be broken but it makes some of the percussion in MOTHER 3 sound great, along with some higher quality samples, xylophone and trumpets being an example, there is no piano so it tries to find the next best thing. I like this a lot, makes me want to make a frankenstein soundfont for the game.

I'm looking into the MK8 bfsar, and I'm noticing the correct volume settings for each track in a song. I'm working on a custom vgmstream build to incorporate volume settings from Nintendo songs, and also to output different tracks from these files (one track can be 1 or 2 channels), so I'll test some stuff out and post results later.

I may end up writing a script to inject this info inside the actual bfstms, so vgmstream can read everything from there. I cannot do this for the DLC music though, since an updated bfsar is not available from the update files, and is purchase locked/unobtainable at this time.

This will only be useful for songs with multiple tracks.
by Kurausukun at 12:27 AM EDT on May 29, 2015
Ooh, nice work.

By the way, I know I've bugged you about this before, but are converters from .wav to b(c/f)stm or nus3bank (or even hps for that matter) in any sort of state to be released soon? It's kind of inconvenient not to have them.

Actually the one I'm most interested in for the moment would be a wav-> looped hps converter since I've always wanted to hack Melee's music, even just for fun. The other formats aren't really a priority since modding on 3DS/Wii U isn't really widely doable yet.
by soneek at 12:46 AM EDT on May 29, 2015
I can release my mod of Revolution B later, that generate brstms, bcstms, and bfstms from up to 12 dsp files, along with a script to build them from wav files. You'll need to get dspadpcm.exe on your own though.

I have more work to do on it though now that I know mono tracks can be thrown in anywhere, and it's not always stereo tracks preceding everything.

I didn't add hps yet (doable since I perfected it on BCM), or nus3bank. I can do the new IDSP type, and then we'd need a tool to inject it into an nus3bank. I could use help with that though for nus3banks with more than one stream.

Here's what I mentioned regarding track volumes.

Pan of 64 is centered, and take (volume/127) squared to get the volume percentage.

Edit: Eh, squaring the percentage works for the sound banks, but don't square for the streams.

Now to inject these into the actual files so vgmstream can read them. I'm doing something similar for brstm and bcstm files that already contain track info inside the stream.

Wow, thanks a lot for that. I can finally make my multi-channel MK8 files sound correct.
by TheUltimateKoopa at 11:35 AM EDT on May 29, 2015
Someone should update the BRSTMs on the site for it.

I do have a question though.

When you've managed to add them to vgmstream to read them, they'll be playing at the correct volumes automatically, relatively, right?

I'm saying relatively, so that if a BRSTM was actually too quiet (i.e. below the threshold of being automatically rejected), then the volumes will be the same relative to each other, when amplifying the entire thing as a whole? I.e. if a frontrunning beat has a volume of 113, it will always be 113/127ths of the volume?
by soneek at 12:24 PM EDT on May 29, 2015
@TUK: Correct. You should be able to downmix channels without any extra modifcation (after vgmstream outputs them with relative volume). You may just have to center some mono tracks, i.e. something like Music Park's instruments and metronome.
by Kurausukun at 12:46 PM EDT on May 29, 2015
If only we had a tool like BrawlBox that we could use for bcsars and bfsars. IIRC the code for BrawlBox is pretty messy right now, so I don't expect anything, but it would be super useful.
by TheUltimateKoopa at 1:03 PM EDT on May 29, 2015
With the mono tracks, like Music Park's instruments, I used to duplicate the track and set them to left and right audio. If you simply take a mono track, and merge it with a stereo track, this also does the same thing.

However, what some people are doing wrong, is making a mono track a two-channel track, but not making it stereo. Therefore, they're having a mono + mono track, which equals louder mono track.
Hence why my BRSTM of DS Tick Tock Clock Final Lap Frontrunning sounds awful. At least that's what I think happened.
by LaniKai at 6:06 PM EDT on May 29, 2015
How do we adjust the volume percentage for programs like Audacity? It only shows me the dB value for the volume.
by soneek at 6:14 PM EDT on May 29, 2015
@Lanikai: Percentage to dB Calculator

Use the signal value instead of power.
by Kurausukun at 11:25 PM EDT on May 29, 2015
There is actually a plugin for audacity that allows you to alter amplitude by percent. I found it after a Google search after looking for one for this exact reason :p
by TheUltimateKoopa at 4:15 AM EDT on May 30, 2015
Are the volume values in the list of Mario Kart 8 values represented as "parts of 127"? Therefore, does 113 mean it has to be 113/127, or 88.976377952% (lol), which is equal to -1.0145 dB?

Obviously this will be automatically done in vgmstream when you've managed to inject the stuff, but if we're too impatient and wanted to do it manually, is what I said correct?

edited 9:27 AM EDT May 30, 2015
by Kurausukun at 1:12 PM EDT on May 30, 2015
@TUK Yes, that's how it works. Volume values are 0-127, so 127 is "full volume," or 100% (Brawl worked the same way). Therefore any lower values are "x out of 127" so we can set up a proportion such as:

113/127 = x/100

and get a percent. Or divide x/127 and multiply by 100. As long as you properly calculate the dBs for your percentage or use the plugin I mentioned above, this is accurate.
by LaniKai at 3:35 PM EDT on May 30, 2015
A quick question about the setup of the tracks.
Earlier in this thread, someone mentioned about making the music (Track 0 & 1) balanced by selecting "Make Stereo Track" in Audacity.

Do I do the same for the frontrunning beats? Because when I do this, they get noticeably quieter. And I know what we're discussing now is getting correct volumes with the music, so I wanted to be sure.

edited 8:44 PM EDT May 30, 2015
by TheUltimateKoopa at 4:05 PM EDT on May 30, 2015
Frontrunning tracks should already be stereo (stereo means it has two channels... it does not mean it has different sounds coming from the left and right channels). If it sounds mono, (that is, all sounds are centered), but has two channels, where each of the left and right channels is equal, it is still technically stereo.

The front-running beats are two channels (left and right), therefore, they should be made stereo (and are intended to be stereo).
by LaniKai at 4:43 PM EDT on May 30, 2015
Yes they do have two channels. Only reason why I felt the need to ask is because the music tracks are described on the side bar as Left and Right for Tracks 0 & 1 respectively. But for the frontrunnings, both just say Mono. But you're right, they're technically stereo. So I also selected "Make Stereo Track" for the frontrunning channels as well.
by Kurausukun at 5:43 PM EDT on May 30, 2015
That's just because Audacity doesn't ever make tracks beyond 2 left or right automatically.
by TheUltimateKoopa at 6:27 PM EDT on May 30, 2015
Yeah. Audacity always has them as left, right, then mono, mono, mono, mono, etc:

Each pair of tracks should be made stereo (unless the actual section of music only has one channel -- an example of this is New Super Mario Bros. 2 which uses 5 channels for the courses... channels 1 and 2 for the main theme, channels 3 and 4 are added when you have a gold flower, and the single channel 5 is when you have the Tanooki Suit (commonly but unofficially known as "Leaf Beats")

Why does it need to be upsampled to 48 kHz?
by starerik at 4:50 PM EDT on June 12, 2015
The Wii U outputs at 48 kHz, so everything under will be upsampled by the console. Better just record, mix and render the music in 48 kHz natively, for optimal sound.
by Segtendo at 7:02 PM EDT on June 12, 2015
I understand the Wii U can reder that, but why bother upsampling when the raw files are at their natural rate?
by Kurausukun at 8:35 PM EDT on June 12, 2015
It doesn't really matter either way. Upsampling is just wasted space, but if you really want to, go ahead. I just don't see the point. Just makes your files needlessly bigger and wastes time.

Seems people misunderstood me. I was questioning Nintendo's choice of 44.1 kHz when the Wii U still needs to upsample it to 48 kHz. They should have gone with native 48 kHz files directly.

And I'm sorry, crediar.
