regarding snsf by unknownfile at 10:03 AM EST on March 7, 2009
Hi, I ripped a set. I'm too lazy to work on anything regarding 2sf today.

i am a test rip

You're a set of ripped.
by manakoAT at 6:51 PM EST on March 7, 2009
nice, i want more SNSF :o)
by unknownfile at 11:28 PM EST on March 7, 2009
Might i also add that this set isn't the cleanest ever, it still has to run past the Konami logo and everything, luckily in_snsf includes silence detection so I removed the logo sound to get stuff seeking past there.

But yeah, will rip some more snsf sets eventually.

What's the advantage of SNSF over SPC?

snsf allows rips that can't be done on SPC, in addition to possibly reducing filesize when optimized.

unfortunately I dont know of an optimizer for such a thing
by marioman at 5:16 PM EDT on March 9, 2009
@SmartOne: You can finally rip Wario's Woods. That's about it.

(Speaking of Wario's Woods, there are playback speed issues with the current set...)

Now that you mention it, I do seem to remember that it ran fine in the snes9x player...
VGMTolbox r285 by snakemeat at 12:17 PM EDT on March 14, 2009
VGMToolbox has been updated again, of relevance to this thread is the Psf2Timer. Drag and Drop PSF2s (or folders full of them) onto the textbox and VGMT will output a batch script in each folder with a timing script (it will make sense when you see it). It probably only works on CSL PSF2s, but you can try others. Thanks to kingshriek for the initial help with my questions and Knurek for beta testing.

There are plenty of other changes, some under the hood, some in the commandline tools (which are around here somehweres...), please read the release notes if you are interested.

You can grab the executable and source on Sourceforge.

Finally figured out how to view the Japanese characters in the NEZPlug readme. Here is a Google translation of what the new version has to offer:

Version 0.9.4.8 + 2 + 17.02
NES
- Fixed FDS sound portion of the frequency modulation.
Game Boy
- Fixed stops are open to multi-core environment memory viewer.

VGMToolbox r320 by snakemeat at 10:18 PM EDT on March 28, 2009
I've updated VGMToolbox and 2SFTools. Of relevance to this thread are the following:

- A PSF Timer has been added. Please see the note inside the timer app about bad rips and issues regarding SEQ extraction from PSFs. It seems to be working very well with proper SEQs. Please let me know if you have any issues with correct SEQs.
- The SDAT Extractor (and sdatext.exe) now extract SWAVs from SWARs in case you want to listen to them.
- The SSF Tools now have logic to make sure python.exe is present in the PATH environment variable to let the user know he needs to add it.
- I've also added a CD-XA extractor that seems to work pretty well in tests.

You can get the latest binary and sources at the Sourceforge page.

EDIT: r320 now available

The PSF Timer has had some drastic improvements for handling bad rips and some minor fixes for good rips. Thanks to Knurek for helping flush out these issues.

Also added some nice new features to the Simple Cutter/Offset Finder. The cutter can now use a terminating string to determine the cut size (good for PSX SEQ and many others). A static byte size can also be added for those headers that have slightly inaccurate size values. Thanks to manakoAT for demonstrating the need for these new features and testing them as well.

Thanks, updated the archive.
by Lunar at 4:18 PM EDT on April 1, 2009
it's such a shame there's no arbitrary NSFE equivalent for GBS files, I'd really welcome such a thing. m3u is horrible. i've got link's awakening, oracle of ages and oracle of seasons tags pretty much ready to go. no times though.
by Knurek at 5:24 PM EDT on April 1, 2009
There are tags, timers, fades and all that jazz... What more would you want?

If you want single tracks, I think VGMToolbox can split the M3U playlist, so you have something like minigbs then (or at least I recall talking with snakemeat about this once).
by marioman at 10:24 PM EDT on April 1, 2009
IMO, M3U is the best way to go when listening to NSF, GBS, KSS, etc. There is no clunky NotSoFatso interface to use, and the M3U does not need to be rewritten if the set is updated. (Provided the track order is the same.) And, like Knurek said, you can split the M3Us so you can load one track at a time in a playlist without having to load and sort through all of the songs in the file.

M3U split anyone?
by snakemeat at 10:26 AM EDT on April 2, 2009
If you want single tracks, I think VGMToolbox can split the M3U playlist

This is not entirely accurate. VGMToolbox will create some "skeleton" M3Us for GBS files. There is an option to create one .m3u per track, but it cannot split existing .m3u files. The same goes for the NSFE to NSF + M3U tool.

Anyone able to somehow get this music playing.. Its sequenced right? The custom .lcd music from doom is all like ~200kb in size each and there's a doomsnd.wmd which is probably driver right? (I'm no expert :P )

I always ripped this game's music from wave up but yeah always wanted to see if the music can be emulated like with all the sequenced, psf music formats all working in vgmstream lately :) Can anyone get it working. I own the disc if its required but pretty much zipped the music files here

Here is an example..

Would be nice if they worked if they are indeed music files :)

by Knurek at 12:31 PM EDT on April 9, 2009
This is Yamaha ADPCM, not Gamecube ADPCM (and vgmstream treats .adp files as the latter).

You'll need to put them in GENH (though if IIRC, GENH only supports AICA ADPCM, which is a bit different than the Saturn one).

Thanks for that.

I was looking at Sexy Parodius for the sega saturn and its interesting.. I think maybe someone already ripped it , but yeah on the saturn each song has 2 files.. (.1 and .2 extensions) part 1 is the intro and part 2 is the last 90% or so of the song but at the beginning and end are the loop points. Just joins them together when it needs to otherwise keeps looping part 2.

It uses wav/aiff 44100hz audio format.

Link

It actually works for all the parodius series games and so can have pretty much lossless audio instead of mp3s that are on the net especially for gokujou etc.. Music from that game are split into 3 PARTS ! hah. But with editing its fine.. Pity they only use 37800Hz instead of 44100.. Still great sound tho :)

Here is a song from gokujou Parodius I pieced together :P

Link

If i was good with genh it would be cool to loop the songs from this series.he he

http://hoot.hcs64.com/ is GO!

Just a up-to-date snapshot of Hoot Archive. Useful for mass leaching (be warned though, more than one connection per IP == autoban) and stuff that wouldn't fit on snesmusic.org server (arcade/snes/genesis sets).

Oh, and since snesmusic.org is down ATM, it's not like you have much choice. :)

Changes since the last Hoot Archive update:

4 new X68000 sets
2 new X1 sets
4 new PC88 sets
225 new/updated PC98 sets (132 from those are NAX driver sets which had a patch change. Still, there's loads of new stuff here as well).
132 new PC sets. From Western PC games, so if games like Ultima or Privateer or Budokan or Might & Magic mean anything to you, you will like this.

Stuff below might've been in previous XMLs, but wasn't available on site:

1098 arcade sets
73 Genesis sets
279 SNES sets
14 NES sets
15 Game Boy sets
by hcs at 11:10 PM EDT on April 21, 2009
Sorry to push this onto a new page (regarding Knurek's awesome collection at hoot.hcs64.com), but it requires emphasis.

be warned though, more than one connection per IP == autoban
be warned though, more than one connection per IP == autoban
be warned though, more than one connection per IP == autoban

It's been only a few hours there are already two IP bans in place. I understand that it's a lot of files, guys, and I fully support using a download manager to handle it, but if it uses as many connections as it can gobble up it will very quickly consume all RAM on my server.
I will happily unban you if you can demonstrate that you have tamed your client.
by nensondubois at 6:51 PM EDT on April 23, 2009
Almost all of the files need updates.
by Knurek at 7:13 PM EDT on April 23, 2009
This is probably caused by the fact, that I've torrentzipped all the sets.

In other news spc.hcs64.com is GO...er.
Full SPC reorg, including all files from snesmusic.org plus about a hundred of other dumps (untitled, but timed).

Other difference between this and snesmusic is that SPC files inside RSN archives were renamed from 8.3 format to proper song names.

Example:

Tales of Phantasia (1995)(Wolfteam)(Namco):

top-101.spc -> 101 Decisive.spc

And of course, this one works ATM.

by Lunar at 10:26 AM EDT on April 24, 2009
To hell with 8.3 naming. That makes entirely so much more sense. That said, I like keeping my sets rar'd.

This has arrived at a perfect time, considering snesmusic is shitting itself at the moment. What's up with that? Datschge forget to pay his bills? I still have to run off a whole bunch of SPC set corrections at some point. I wonder if the site will ever have any locally hosted forums...

I've updated VGMToolbox with the following changes, maybe some will affect you:

Been a lot of changes "under the hood" to make certain developments easier.

[BIN2PSF]
Fixed incorrect label.
[SDATEXT]
Fixed loop information in SWAV header. Thanks hcs.
[OFFSET FINDER/EXTRACTOR]
Add preset loading and some presets. More to come and Save feature will be added soon.
Fix issue with Terminator Bytes overflow.
[GENH]
Added GENH creator.
Added GENH to formats for DAT file use and examination use.
[CHECKSUMS]
Added a simple checksum calculator for drag and drop CRC32/MD5/SHA1. The VGMToolbox CRC32 will also be calculated for supported formats.
[NSFE]
Fix bug for empty init banks.
[FILESEARCH]
Added a file searching tool that will search for files in folders and archives. It's useful for looking in directories full of game packs for a specific game.
[HOOTXML]
Added HES and KSS to the Hoot XML creator. An .m3u is required. Also added a search for .m3u files if the source is GBS/NSF.

woh. I didn't realise Master of Monsters had sequenced tracks as well - strange how they're just sequenced versions of the streamed tunes. Knurek once again delivers! Your rip is slightly higher quality than mine too. Great soundtrack, this one. Thanks~

EDIT: oh yeah, one thing i'm wondering about this soundtrack -- the intro music is missing (you can hear it here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Pt5paHORx8) - I guess that means it's embedded in the FMV?

Damn, didn't notice any movie files while browsing. Will reget the game and see if it's anything that we can demux...

Hey, are there any archives focusing just on music ripped from pirated games and romhacks?

Hey, are there any archives focusing just on music ripped from pirated games and romhacks?

I've noticed that some of the sites at vgm.hcs64.com have a separate "zzz_unlicensed" or "zzz_homebrew" section (SMD, NSF, SPC, GBS, GSF).

Gil_Galad has an "NSF Hacks" (Music > NSF Central > NSF Hacks) archive on his site. Note that the bottom of the "NSF Central" page has an additional hack (Zelda 2), that may or may not be included in the "NSF Hacks" page (I haven't done the comparison).
by Dais! at 11:18 PM EDT on May 19, 2009
geez, I had forgotten all about the zzz folders when I made that post >_<

thanks for the link!

knurek, any idea why tenpei sato is credited instead of yasuhiko fukuda for Emerald Dragon PC-Engine set? as far as i'm aware, sato only worked on the PC-88 / x68k versions.

insanely good soundtrack anyway.
GSF request by ray at 12:09 AM EDT on June 3, 2009
Hi,

Love the work you guys are doing!

I have one request for a GBA game called "Racing Gears Advance".

It's by renowned composer, Neil Voss, who scored Tetrisphere and The New Tetris on the N64.

If anyone can do a GSF rip of this game, that would be super!

Thanks for reading. And I apologize ahead of time if this is the wrong place to request rips.
by Mugendai at 12:37 AM EDT on June 4, 2009
When the MDSF format is finished, will it support Sega 32x music as well? I'd love to listen to the music without having to use .wavs.
by Lunar at 7:57 AM EDT on June 4, 2009
i think the question is if rather than when :( but i think it was going to support 32x and sega CD PCM
by Dais! at 4:18 PM EDT on June 4, 2009
This is a bit weird. I emailed Neil Voss, both to ask him about Orbital and to see if he could release the music from Racing Gears. I hope he won't mind me reposting this excerpt from his reply:

"
As far as I know it would be (legally) possible. I've definitely considered circulating it online in MP3 format. There are also people ripping GBA soundtracks, so I am wondering if it has been ripped in an emulated format yet.

Honestly it was a title I always felt the music worked best during the gameplay but was a bit thin to stand alone. So I never really put forth time to record it and package it up.

I'll let you know if it gets posted and where, or if I come across an emulated version. Meanwhile if you want to follow our studio updates, where anything released would be announced you can follow or occasionally check out http://twitter.com/alinear
"

Unfortunate, but also kind of amusing.

just see if caitsith2/unknownfile[/any other gsf rippers I may not know of] can rip it
(it doesn't use the sappy driver so it needs to be custom ripped I think)
by ray at 11:26 PM EDT on June 4, 2009
@Dais - Nice to read that excerpt from the man himself!

@Mastery - Where can I contact either Caitsith2 or unknownfile?
by arbingordon at 12:57 AM EDT on June 5, 2009
you can reach caitsith2 @ http://hcs64.com/irc/

havent seen unknownfile in forever though, so I don't know about contacting him (in a timely manner at least)
VGMToolbox r384 by snakemeat at 11:06 PM EDT on June 10, 2009
I've updated VGMToolbox, you can grab the latest version on SourceForge. The changes include:

[MAKE2SF]
- Added 2SF Maker. Automatically rips, optimizes, tags, and times 2sfs from an SDAT. Also allows the user to choose which tracks to optimize the SDAT for (good for weeding out SFX).

[PSFTIMER/PSF2TIMER]
- Removed Ceiling functions from the timers to get more accurate end times.
- Added an option to PSFTimer to automatically double the timed value for tracks that do not contain loop markers, but instead loop the entire track. The tool cannot detect if the entire track is looped, only your ears can tell you.

[XSFRECOMPRESS]
- Added xSF Recompress tool. Allows for auto 7-zipping the output set. Works well for creating xSFs in "Store" compression and then 7-zipping for ultimate compression.

[OFFSETFINDER]
- Added some more presets: PlayStation SEQ, PlayStation 2 SQ/HD.

[SEARCHFORFILE]
- Changed to allow multiple search strings.

[CRCCALCULATOR]
- Added MD5/SHA1 for VGMT checksums.
- Added checkbox for generating VGMT checksums or not.

[HOOTXML]
- Updated to modify GBS info if (GBC) is in the file name.
- Modified Company name to use second to last field if it is not "-" or a number.
-Modified to use real tabs in output instead of spaces.

[GENERAL]
- Cleaned out a lot of the old 2sf format stuff and any unused .exe files. They should still live in SVN land if you desperately need them.

Wow, looks awesome! Does this mean I can rip the NSMB music without proprietary software? Excellent!
by Muzer at 2:38 PM EDT on June 11, 2009
Where can I find testpack.nds? A quick google returns nothing. Do I just use any NDS ROM?

EDIT: Never mind, I found out that it didn't seem to work anyway, but then I found that 2sfs already existed for the game I wanted (I had misunderstood http://2sf.hcs64.com/ )

testpack.nds is in the ripkit.
by Muzer at 3:58 PM EDT on June 11, 2009
Yeah, but when I ran the 2sf convertor, it just gave me back the sdat (although it had been changed). I found a pre-made rip of it, anyway.
by bxaimc at 6:07 PM EDT on June 11, 2009
What 2sf converter? O.o
by Muzer at 7:04 PM EDT on June 12, 2009

What is the best player for all these MDX files being added? I tried googling a while back and got a bunch of empty links to in_mdx.
by Mouser X at 1:13 AM EDT on June 14, 2009
Really? The XMPlay link doesn't work? When I searched "in_mdx" that was the 3rd link down, and it works fine. I didn't check the first 2 links. Are you perhaps searching from some different country, or with strange Google settings (maybe you have some weird cookies enabled?)? I'm not 100% certain, but I'm pretty sure that the link XMPlay is the plugin you want, and the most recent version. Hope that helps. Mouser X over and out.
VGMToolbox Bug Fix by snakemeat at 2:43 PM EDT on June 14, 2009
Rebuilder would delete files even if the move to output failed. If you use the Rebuilder DOWNLOAD THIS NOW! to help prevent lost files. Thanks to manakoAT for finding the bug.

As always, be sure to backup your files before using the tool.

The glitch, revealed. by Electric Keet at 7:19 PM EDT on June 14, 2009
It turns out to be my fault in entirety, by which I mean that my ages-old habit of using Ctrl-LeftArrow and Ctrl-RightArrow to navigate sequential webpages is being strangely interpreted on these forums as "Auto-fill and submit form", and since my handle and password were auto-saved along with, oddly, the most recent subject line I used....

Well, it's hard to say if the problem is Opera (for taking the "Next" command to mean "Fill form and submit") or the design of the web form (for somehow letting that be the default action of the page), but I'm inclined to blame myself more (for being a ditz) and I'll just have to try to be real careful about not using that shortcut on this site.
by anewuser at 9:22 PM EDT on June 14, 2009
opera test1

Electric Keet: couldn't make it happen here on my 5 minute test. However, I do not use wand or forms autofill addons.

edited 9:28 PM EDT June 14, 2009
by BtEO at 1:45 PM EDT on June 15, 2009
Yeah, it's a wand thing. A quick look in the defaults directory in an Opera install finds this line in fastforward.ini:

Wand login=300

Removing that line and restarting Opera should stop fast forward (ctrl+right, or in my case a mouse gesture to the right) triggering a wand submission.

Although Opera will replace that file with each reinstall but you can duplicate the file elsewhere and point Opera to the right location.
