Is there a timed playlist for those like there was one for the previous famicompo?
by anewuser at 7:09 PM EST on January 12, 2010
ORG (used daily, so I know it works) Nezplug has issues with some tunes (stuffness) 6 seconds of fade. Asian character are not displayed, dunno if nezplug playlists can even display those, help me there =o

that's for the votepack rather than the final pack though, so you'd need to edit that list to reflect the new filenames
by Kaminari at 5:41 PM EST on January 13, 2010
@anewuser

NEZplug doesn't support Unicode, only SJIS. You can display the Japanese characters in your player of choice by running it through AppLocale, or by setting your Windows system to Japanese (obviously). If you don't know what AppLocale is, don't bother.

The best approach with M3U playlists is to use plain old ASCII (which of course means romanization of the song titles).

Some USF set updates. Minor fixes.

Ganbare Goemon - Mononoke Sugoroku: Tagged composer field as "Goemon Production Team"
Goemon's Great Adventure: Tagged composer field as "Goemon Production Team"
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon: Tagged composer field as "Goemon Production Team", fixed typo of "Omitsu" (it was Omtisu before iirc.)
Mario Kart 64: For some reason, the composer field STILL had "Koji Kondo, Hajime Wakai" even though I changed it once before in 2006. It's been changed to Kenta Nagata again (as has the index), hopefully for the last time.
Yoshi's Story: Fixed the timer for "Yoshi's Disco", it previously ended too early at around 45 seconds. It now does two full loops+fade.

http://www.vgmusic.com/~lunar/usf

The Goemon retags are due to the apparent massive confusion over the composers who worked on each game, including typos of their names. Besides, "Goemon Production Team" seems the most commonly used tag on the OST releases (has the most plays on Last FM, etc.) The composer names should remain on the index though.

could someone please add these files (including the updated index) to usf.hcs64.com? cheers

Would interpolation similar to the options in DeSmuME make GSF sound sweet? I wonder.
by JFD62780 at 4:10 PM EST on January 31, 2010
I said time and time again.... Not quite. It mixes the channels via software, THEN outputs them, most of the time, in a less than desirable sampling rate. So the end result will be even more muddy.

Sorry, it's all they could think up at time time.
by SmartOne at 5:02 PM EST on January 31, 2010
Define "it."
by JFD62780 at 2:51 AM EST on February 1, 2010
The GBA Direct Sound DSP. GBA games merely use the ARM CPU to mix its game audio via software. That's why the games normally sound muddy and tinny; it mixes the audio at a lower rate that we're used to.

You're saying the stored samples are actually higher quality than what is heard. Hackity-hack?
by hcs at 2:51 PM EST on February 1, 2010
Wow, I'd never looked into GBA sound hardware before. I am shocked that it has only that simple DSP hardware, I had expected a few more PCM channels. To have to do mixing in software... no wonder they're so cheap about it, with what little CPU is available. And it doesn't have the N64's extra coprocessor to handle synthesis either (unless the Z80 can be pulled in but I'd think I would have heard about that by now).

@SmartOne: he's saying that no matter what the samples being used are, there's nowhere to plug in a proper resample (for higher quality or a higher final sample rate) at the synthesis level, since it's done in software. The DS has hardware synthesis so it's relatively easy to reasample better since the hardware itself is being simulated.
by arbingordon at 3:17 PM EST on February 1, 2010
why not have something like VBA
imo VBA sounds much better than hardware playback (no hiss, as JFD mentioned, I think the GBA plays at 22.05kHz or something, but playing audio at 44.1kHz sounds great [relative to hardware])
</babbling>
by JFD62780 at 7:16 PM EST on February 1, 2010
As far as I see, the GBA only has two digital hardware channels: Left and Right.

I'm amazed, and at the same time glad, that Nintendo actually decided to go with 16 separate pannable hardware channels for the DS. So again, like some other dude mighta mentioned:

"How about converting GSF to 2SF?"

That way, we'll have the best of both worlds: The clarity of 'hardware-channels' with the chippiness of GameBoy Legacy channels!

Wouldn't hoit! >;)

Wouldn't it be possible to enhance emulation to make the GBA APU act like the DS? Thus my above "hackity-hack?"

Or GSF to 2SF.
by hcs at 9:36 PM EST on February 1, 2010
This would involve rewriting the game's driver (say for instance the Sappy driver) to somehow know about the DS's extra hardware and use it instead of doing things in software. I have no idea how plausible that would be, but I'mma bet not very. Might have a better chance at converting the sequence and sample formats to run under a DS driver, but this will still be hella tough.

Okay, Valentine Day's gift fiesta part deux.

Amiga Music Archive went live today.

If you know what UnExotica is, you might disregard this, since this is basically just my reorganization of it (with some stuff added from additional sources of course).

If not, lend me your ear. Commodore Amiga is the home to some amazingly awesome music. But it requires some technical know-how to fully enjoy. Here's a small tutorial, feel free to ask any questions if anything's vaguely explained.

You can group the tunes into few cathegories. I'll describe the way to replay each of them in XMPlay, since that's the best bet Windows users have for Amiga (heck, VGM) related playback. Linux users can use UADE, but as I'm Win32 exclusive, you're on your own in setting it up.

1. Streamed music from CD32 games (OGG Vorbis or MP3). Should be playable just about anywhere. Few games might use Amiga's IFF-8SVX format. Playable with xmp-8svx plugin.

2. Standard ProTracker format (MOD files). This has it's own cathegory since an obscene amount of games uses that. Any good MOD player would do here, but I'll suggest XMPlay again, since it's the only player I know that supports Amiga Filter emulation (pretty sure some games use that, can't name any examples off my head), VBLank timing (Settlers) and subsongs in modules (Digital Illusion's Pinball games) at the same time.

3. Music in one of the many ProTracker packer formats (various). Many games use these instead of ProTracker files for whatever reason the developers were thinking. Have no fear, just install xmp-modpacker plugin, and they'll be automatically treated as standard ProTracker modules.

4. Old SoundTracker variants files. Now this is where it gets confusing. These have also MOD prefix/extension, but are completely incompatible with ProTracker (they have 15 instruments instead of ProTracker's 31, and only some music effect commands). To make matters worse, there are dozens of versions of the replay routine each incompatible with each other. You best bet would be the xmp-mod15 plugin, it's not perfect, but handles most songs properly.

5. Exotic formats. Basically while Amiga music has it's own xSF variant (CUST files, which have both the music data and replayer routine), the general idea was just to extract the music data and write a separate replayer for those (think VGMStream, but split into small parts for each supported formats) using a common plugin API. There are almost 150 formats like that, each supported by xmp-delix plugin. I'm linking my private version, which has about support for about 30 more formats than the one available on XMPlay's site.
Be forwarned though, some replayers and a few CUST files don't work yet (the ones using Amiga's audio.device, which sadly includes Dune II for instance). Only way to get them to play is using DeliTracker or EaglePlayer in WinUAE emulator, which is even more tedious than it sounds.
xmp-delix v2.0 is supposed to be able to handle them just fine, sadly, no ETA on it.
by marcusss at 7:33 AM EST on February 14, 2010
Nice read.

Yeah I love Amiga music and have a shedload of customs songs too :) Some formats were a bitch to get working properly or at all !. I could never get wings music working as it is a custom format and If I remember correctly had samples only in any downloadable music file.. :(

Always had problems getting a few composers music working such as .DZ and .DW ! Also .MXTX sometimes works other times doesn't .. Some of those are for the music in the AD&D games since I like some songs there :)

Nice Amiga archive ! At least a new place to look besides exotica.

Some cool games and their music are Super Cars / Super Cars II , Lethal Weapon, Fire & Ice e.g :D

nice job knurek :) i've always thought the exotica lads were far too disconnected from the rest of vgm fandom, so it is good to see amiga represented on vgm.hcs64, joining the dots so to speak. there's a lot of great soundtracks. i'm a big fan of phill nixon's soundtracks with Flair (oscar trolls and morph particularly - the modules, not so much the redbooks.) gonna contact him soon hopefully :3 if only it were that easy for the japz.

[NSFtoM3U] Add simple .m3u maker for NSF files. (Will also create SGC playlists if they are ever supported.)

-= UPDATED =-
[ADVANCED CUTTER]
- Progress increments every 10% now to prevent GUI delays.
- Add NDS-STRM plugin by Knurek

[CHECKSUM CALCULATOR] Add checkboxes to move duplicates to subdirectories.

[GENH EXTRACTOR] Now saves header upon extraction.

[PSFDATAFINDER]
- Improved VB searching. Stricter requirements.
- Add code to calculate expected VB size via the sample lengths. Code will use this value and issue a warning if it does not match the header. Perhaps will use a checkbox in the future.
- Improve Cancel functionality during VB searching.

[PSF2DATAFINDER]
- Improved VB searching. Not as good as PSF Data Finder, hoping to make a single function soon.

[PSF MAKER] Add Mark Grass/Davironica drivers. Presets now use included drivers.

[PSF STUB MAKER] Add "Move to Highest Address" button. After entering sizes for SEQ/VH/VBs, click this button to move values to the highest address in the text area. This is good for avoiding the issues with text areas that start at higher addresses or other problems that can plague placing data at the start of the text area.

[XSFTAGGER] Added option to allow removal of text within brackets for automatic title creation.

-= FIXED =-
[2SFTIMER] Update to include quotes around output file names.

[GENERAL]
- Fix to data extraction code skip zero length segments (typically from an empty file).
- Fixed data extraction code was reading past end of file in "relative" buffer and returning false positives.

[MAKE2SF] Fix TAB order.

[PSF MAKER]
- Updated to include actual total SEQ count for proper multi-track SEP handling.
- Update psfdrv.c to make SetVol functions optional. May result in sets without sound if they don't have this function, but they would require a generic driver otherwise.
- Add unused default value for PARAMETER_OFFSET when Mark Grass/Davironica driver is selected to prevent error messages. Since PSF Maker doesn't support SEP usage with these drivers, this is just a hack to avoid the error.

[PSFTIMER] Fix code to output loop end time before applying loop time multiplier for the _actual_ loop end time.

-= THANKS =-
Mark Grass/Davironica: Thanks for the generic drivers.
Knurek: Thanks for the NDS-STRM plugin.

Just wondering... my driver supports SEP data - will there be future support for the PSF MAKER?

I would really like to add it. I spent quite a few hours yesterday working on it, but couldn't get the .minipsfs right. I was trying to make sets where the .minipsf has nothing but the parameter values (similar to the way I do it with "stubbed" drivers), and the lib has the SEP data.

In other words, I'm trying to include it. I just need some more time and probably some guidance from my PSF mentor, manakoAT.

Oh, I know. Racing Gears Advance. That one'd be sweet.

Also the remaining Virt scores: Juka and the Monophonic Menace, Scurge: Hive, The Scorpion King - Sword of Osiris, Godzilla: Domination would be a nice thing to have.
rape of jet grind radio in progress by unknownfile at 12:26 AM EST on February 28, 2010
sound select function at 0x080271c

thankfully the sound programmers were much more sane than standard gax programmers and end up doing this

LDR R1, =off_8087CA8 ; sound code table
LDR R0, [R4] ; Gets the sound code

the second one is changed to mov r0, 0h and we go from there

also some really stupid sound programming

; in the rom somewhere. just initializes gax, but then...
STR R1, [R0]
BL SoundSelectLol ; call that soundselect
; This stops the sound right after it starts playing!
; "sup mang, put ur swi loop here lolz"
MOVS R0, #1
BL sub_8002584

Off to gsfopt it goes.

Knurek, in case you wondered, I've downloaded all of psf.hcs64.com (that I can currently see), and according to 7zip, it all checked out fine. I'm not sure if anyone else already told you this, but I figured you'd appreciate knowing. And, I'm looking forward to MMX3 being uploaded....

Anyway, thanks for the excellent archive! It's going to take a long time for me to go through it all! Awesome work. Mouser X over and out.

boo... problem. not only are there 7 tracks in the super gunstar heroes set that aren't on the ost, but there's also two on the ost that aren't in the set.. o_O the former i can perhaps understand, but not the latter... the tracks on the ost not in the set are #14 "STONE" and #24 "SORROW".

wondering if it's worth continuing at this point.

here's how i do it

1. disassemble in IDA
2. look for writes to 0x04000084 (sound enable register)
3. put breakpoints in no$gba for functions surrounding these writes. this usually finds the sound select.
4. patch the ROM somewhere to send it into an infinite loop after it plays a sound of your choice.
5. rom2gsf, minigsf and gsfopt

Knurek: I'm not sure how you type out the links, but they're leading to "http://www.hcs64.com/mboard/ssf.hcs64.com". My best guess is that you need to include "http://" when you put in the link. Isn't it kinda odd how the links to the psf and amiga archives are repeated *TWICE* once at the top and another at the bottom...?

Also either it's me, or there's a *SLIGHT* problem with one of the XA's in the Symphony of the Night archive, I hear a very loud (CLICK) sound during playback, and it hurts my ears when it does... Not sure if it's vgmstream's fault or the XA stream having a slight error.

The XA in question is XA_STR1_086bb9cc.XA, the "looped" part to the song that plays during the Prologue stage with Richter Belmont.
by hcs at 6:12 AM EST on March 7, 2010
Heh, whoops, didn't realize the links were already there when I added them in, guess Knurek (or me?) beat me to it.
Don't know about the SotN XA problem, unfortunately.

someone likes to hide the sound select. i've had no problem getting the init and sync calls, but have turned up nothing for the select routine.

I don't think any of those have been ripped yet. You can get the audio for Langrisser from the Saturn rip section I believe.

Knurek, I have a question about the hoot archive.

Seeing how there's Fade to Black, Wing Commander: Privateer, Syndicate (broken instruments..?), and both Ultima Underworld games..

Is there a way to add some of my favorite games to this program? I'm itching to play Wolfenstein 3-D, System Shock 1, DOOM, and such, but I'm not sure how hoot actually handles PC MS-DOS games, is it possible for me to contribute to this archive somehow?

I'm shocked and awed enough at how well it plays Ultima Underworld's music, other than the looping problem, I'd like to listen to System Shock 1's music if it is possible to add it into hoot somehow..

Oh, and I'd rather not forget Duke Nukem 3-D also..

So love to hear more of my old MS-DOS classics played back with OPL3 emualtion.
by unknownfile at 10:30 AM EST on March 13, 2010
i recommend learning x86 and reverse-engineering the api so you know what's going on
by Knurek at 11:20 AM EST on March 13, 2010
Most games using Miles Sound System can be added quite easily (just check if there's a sample.opl or some .xmi files in the game package).
System Shock uses it from your list, rest uses other drivers. I have System Shock in my 'to add' folder, but kind of lost interest in Hoot when... stuff happened.

But yeah, as uf said, x68 asm + reversing the API. All the Western PC sets in Hoot were added by a single Pole, so if you are interested, I can ask him for some pointers.
by RukarioGyiyg996 at 1:21 PM EST on March 13, 2010
Thanks, I could appreciate that. I'm dying to hear System Shock 1 in OPL3, instead of my soundcard's broken MIDI device... (I hate creative, they basically brought back the same problem they had with their Soundblaster 16\WaveBlaster screw up..)

Don't know but I'd also like to hear it in Gravis Ultrasound, if System Shock also supported that, haven't tried it in DosBOX myself,I only had OPL3 setup..

fresh install of Winamp on a fresh computer...

Um, Highly Advanced or viogsf?
by Dais! at 10:36 PM EDT on March 14, 2010
also, in_snsf or snsf9x?
by ugetab at 10:46 PM EDT on March 14, 2010
My opinion is viogsf and in_snsf9x. GSF plays better with winamp, and 9x plays better with the sets.
by Dais! at 3:34 AM EDT on March 15, 2010
thank you.

I'm looking through the full 255 GSH set, checking against the OST and such. I'll finish up in the morning (well, afternoon), but based on unknownfile's tip on Alone Fighter, I've identified the following unused songs so far:

0016 - "Alone Fighter" from Galaxy Force II
0018 - "Final Take Off" from After Burner
0020 - Powered up theme from Altered Beast (it starts with the start of the level one theme)
0022 - Wilderness (first stage theme from Golden Axe)

I wonder if perhaps there's a code you can input to get these to play. I doubt it - I'm pretty sure the intended Altered Beast sequence was cut from the game entirely (there's an old screenshot floating around, but none of the graphics show up in the final game). But it'd be interesting to know what else is lurking in the ROM....
the scorpion king brutally raped by unknownfile at 12:26 PM EDT on March 15, 2010
This one was confusing. There's a ton of helper functions but I eventually found the music select which is located at 0x0800CDD8. Took a while to do, now I'm going to go patch the thing and put it aside while I look at Juka and the Monophonic Menace, again.

----

Well as it turns out Juka is a stupid piece of shit so The Scorpion King is going into gsfopt.
