PSF2 Directory. :)
by Mouser X at 12:57 PM EDT on July 19, 2006
While this isn't directly related to xSF format info, it is emulated audio info that I figure people would like to know about. Years ago, before I found OC ReMix (sometime in 2000 or 2001), I found a really neat emulated audio player called Meridian (I refer to this version as Meridian Classic). Since Meridian was being hosted on Overclocked.org, I eventually found that site as well.

Anyway, the reason I bring this up, is to show that Meridian has been developing emulated audio software for years (minus nearly all of 2005). About a month ago, he released a new GBS plugin for Winamp. The plugin is far from feature rich, but it's very very accurate. It sounds great, and in most cases sounds better than any other GBS player I've ever used (I think the only exception to this is Meridian Classic).

Check out the new GBS plugin here. While it may be a little CPU intensive (it takes about 30% of my 2ghz AMD CPU), it sounds great. As I said, it's not feature rich, but hopefully that will change as Meridian continues to work on it (which I certainly hope he's doing. Check the forums). Hope you enjoy this great GBS player. Mouser X over and out.

Some while back I got the PS2 game Fighting For One Piece downloaded, and I have a huge audio chunk which I have re-interleaved. I need to find the time to parse this stuff. PS2's ADPCM compression algorithm sucks, so it should be relatively easy.

I managed to parse a track. The way Bandai decided to have the music loop sucks - they just made it play over and over then have it fade instead of giving it any sort of real loop points.

It's in my PSF2 directory. (FFOP-2.psf2)

Did some work on Wario Ware Inc. today, and I finally got it working. Although it doesn't at all have the right tempo, it works.

too lazy to update the previous post.

Wario Ware Inc, broken and with only 256 of about 500 or 1000, is up at GSF Central.

Ahhh Freakin' awesome!!! You're ripping Ratchet & Clank 2: Going Commando! All of the R&C games have some great music. I've ripped all 4 Ratchet games to mp3 (what a pain in the ass that was).

Do you have any plans on ripping the other ratchet games?

I've tried to rip the Ratchet games using some audio rippers (like MFAudio and PSound), but most of the files on the DVDs are hidden :(

I *was* working on it. I still have the stream banks, so I'll get to work on it this weekend.

Also, I'm gonna need to start work on We Love Katamari since nobody wants to bother with it.

Lastly, Jak and Daxter has been abandoned for now. My notes and everything are in the "Scrapped Sets" folder.

Cool :)

Jak & Daxter and Jak II both seem like they would be hard to rip into PSF2 files. Most of the songs use several soundbanks depending on the situation/location in the game. Jak 3 and Jak X: Combat Racing are both streamed. I've ripped all 4 of those games to mp3 too (1 and 2 manually and 3 and X using MFAudio).

I also ripped the Jak X demo. It has different "demo" versions of all of the songs used in the final game. There are some songs in the demo not used in the final game and vice versa (There were also a couple of unused tracks on both DVDs).
by F3582 at 6:12 AM EDT on August 2, 2006
Ain't We Love Katamari completely streamed?

Speaking of streaming: Did anyone bother with examining Star Ocean 3? I mean, the music quality is almost too high for being sequenced...
by unknownfile at 8:08 AM EDT on August 2, 2006
If WLK is streamed I'll be doing it anyways. It's not like myk65536 or whoever was put off by Katamari Damacy being 500 MB or so.

Also, if you can, then send me Star Ocean 3, and I'll take a look at it. My email is certifiedunknownfile@spamisforlosersgmail.com.

Captain's log.

We Love Katamari is 66.1% downloaded.
Star Ocean's download is paused.
Ratchet and Chank is showing its first signs of looping.
Jak And Daxter is still in the scrap pile.

Last but not least, antifreeze pwns.

I got a test track from We Love Katamari ripped. Guess how big it is?

...62 MB. FOR ONE TRACK. :(

I predict it'll be about 850-1000 MB when finished, which will whip Katamari Damacy's record for biggest psf2 set.

Stay tuned.

While we're on the subject of PSF2, check out Sir Sabin's PSF2 Dump. He's ripping Dragon Ball Z: Sagas to PSF2 form, and this'll be his directory for when he needs some space. Currently, a WIP version of his set is in there.
by unknownfile at 11:28 PM EDT on August 5, 2006
We Love Katamari is finished, save for tags and looping. It's 725 MB when 7z'd, so I need permission from hcs before I can throw this slab of meat into my PSF2 Dump.

Two xSF updates.

First off: We Love Katamari is in the PSF2 dump. Be light on bandwidth or I will delete it from the server.

Secondly: I finally figured out Mawaru Made In Wario. It's going to take about 8 to 12 hours to optimize if my predictions are correct. CPU use is 55% on average.
by hcs at 1:54 AM EDT on August 7, 2006
for the curious, what was the fix needed for Mawaru?
by AENIGMA at 2:27 AM EDT on August 7, 2006
Cool, thank you UNKNOWNFILE for making the psf2s of WLK :)

A while back I ripped WLK using MFAudio and here are the names used within the US version of the game. Some of the names I got from the "The Complete Sounds of Katamari" CDs (those songs are marked with a @).

@hcs:
Mawaru, like Wario Ware Inc, had a double sync function. One was to keep the music playing and the other was to keep the music synced. So, it would be something like this.

ldr r0, songnumber
bl sappy_songselect ;this game uses the generic song select

playloop:

bl vsync
bl mawaru_soundmain
swi 2
b playloop

And I'm still not going to rip the US version of the game.

@AENIGMA:

Thanks for the tag corrections. Since Mawaru Wario is still optimizing (only about 210 of the 1023 have been done so far!) I'll repack the set later.

Mawaru-related:

Well, it took 12 hours 30 minutes to clean songs 1 to 256. At this rate, I estimate cleaning will take a total of 52 hours. In the meantime you are free to twiddle your thumbs and listen to the broken Wario Ware Inc. set.

UPDATE: I've stopped optimization for the set. It's taking far too long due to all the smaller tracks (eg, sound effects).

Katamari-related:

Revision 3 is yet to be packed and uploaded.

Jak and Daxter-related:

adsinfo is a program I whipped together with the help of our resident hcs.

It allows you to read the headers of ads files, and is tested with Megaman X7.

It supports displaying headers, and writing PSF2 INI's based on them.

Snaffle it

God Hates VAGs also required hcs's help. It can take two mono streams (specifically headerless VAG), and turn them into a stereo stream with a 16 byte interleave. This is needed for my Ratchet and Chank 2 set which sucks in mono, but I decided to release it to the public. Still, it is not perfect, but it's damn close.

Unknownfile, congratulations on the Wario Ware sets! I know I'm insane, but I'm trying to tag and time the first. So far it's been difficult, some songs/fanfares don't even ring a bell, and I wouldn't doubt that many of those are unused. Man, this'll take me ages...

Anyways, progress on Ratchet on Chank 2:

I managed to whip together two programs, one for making stereo streams out of the two VAG files, and one for getting the VAG files out of the WADs.

Hah, I've not been coming too frequently since updates are few.

Anyway, the progress is damn slow on WW. I might give up in the middle of it too, since it's frustrating. Hmm, now that I think of it, maybe it would be easier with an emu, being able to pause and all. Anybody have a savefile with everything unlocked? I'd appreciate that.

That MSF sounds good. One benefit of ripping the music as MSFs is that it can be distributed without having to deal with the issues of hosting a ROM. (As is the case with M1.)

Thanks for the WW Twisted file, but at least I think the microgames should have the US names. Just a thought.

No US songs? Wel, I guess I can record them off my emulator. ^_^

Still no news on the sequenced Gamecube format?
by Mouser X at 8:54 PM EDT on September 9, 2006
Definatly still no news on a GC sequence format. No one here knows [EDIT]much, if[/EDIT] anything about the sound hardware of the GC, and there's no emulators, anywhere, that emulate the GC's audio hardware either. When you see a GC emulator that plays music (other than streamed stuff), then you can ask that question again. Because, at that time, it means that someone has successfully emulated the GC SPU, and therefore a GC sound format is somewhat feasible (though, you'll still most likely need people knowledgeable enough that they can rip such games, so that will slow things down as well).

So, keep your eyes open on GC emulators. I've heard good things about Gekko, but it's not out yet. Do a search on emutalk for more info on Gekko (or Gecco, I don't remember). Though, I wouldn't get my hopes up on that one either. I haven't heard anything that implies it will successfully emulate the GC SPU (not that it won't, but I don't have any good reasons to beleive that it will. At least for the first release).

Hope that answers that question.

[EDIT](still part of the one above) Apparently UNKOWNFILE knows a little bit (more even?) about the software end, but there's still not enough, if any, information on the hardware to make a format (and player) likely. Sorry for my misinformation. Mouser X over and out.

Agufungus:

I absolutely *despise* the US version of Mawaru Wario. It is so bad that it's close to what 4Kids Entertainment is doing to One Piece - that's how bad it is. At least it keeps the original music though.

Also, there is a specific sequencer used - it's called JaiSeq, and runs using AW sample banks. It's been used in Luigi's Mansion and ZeldaWW.
by BigCN401 at 11:20 PM EDT on September 10, 2006
I didn't think it was WORST as a 4Kids' One Piece dub. We're talking about music here and Nintendo didn't replace (keyword) 99% of the music in Twisted!.

I actually like both version of Mona Pizza. It's impossible to do a direct translation of the lyric but it still kept the "meaning" of the song. XD

And speaking of that song, ever since loveemu created a NDS strm to wave converter I was able to rip the song from both version of Touched!.

EDIT: Since this is about other audio format I just wanted to say that I was surprise that Animal Crossing DS have two strm audio. The title music was recorded at 47605Hz. Doesn't that mean the NDS SPU is outputting audio at 48kHz?

As for Twisted, I'm still thankful for the Japanese version. I found out that there's at least one microgame missing (Goku Attack) in the US version, and the baseball track has been horribly changed. And don't forget the Famicom-to-NES transition (at least Famicom Rob remained).
by unknownfile at 9:45 AM EDT on September 11, 2006
I compare it as such because it has:

- an excess of puns
- censorship of alcohol (becomes juice or milk)
- missing elements
- Americanized themes

Look at this and tell me what the two things have in common in terms of editing.
by BigCN401 at 7:14 PM EDT on September 11, 2006
I know all about the edits that 4Kids did to One Piece (and what they used to do with Pokémon too) and Nintendo with Twisted! too.

For me, I just look at the edits between anime and games differently. Or rather, you can say I look at the experience from each one of them. When I watch the Japanese and the English version of One Piece, I get two different experience of the anime. When I play both Japanese and the English version of Twisted!, I get the same experience from the game.

Anyway, maybe that's just me. I'm not saying you're wrong. I don't want to go off topic either so I'll stop here.

Hey Josh. Good work on the MSF stuff. I know that it is still a work in progress, but I would like to point something out.

The in_mame plugin only works with out_wave in Winamp 5. If it is played with out_ds, the music will be choppy/garbled.

Also, I tried it in Winamp 2 and if you use out_wave, the music is choppy/garbled like out_ds on Winamp 5, but if you use out_ds nothing will play.

You probably know of this already, but just in case you don't, here you go.

Thanks for the great format.
by Knurek at 1:24 AM EDT on September 16, 2006

by kode54 at 12:51 PM EDT on September 16, 2006
Maybe the sound is dodgy because it isn't using the output's CanWrite function, which is supposed to report how much room there is in the output buffer. The typical plug-in design calls for polling that until there's enough room in the output buffer, and waiting with Sleep() until there is.

by Mouser X at 4:29 PM EDT on September 30, 2006
Quite unlikely. Though, as I recall, I think the only thing missing is the driver itself. The sequence data (I think it's sequence based) is already available. According to Davironica, they can get all the sequnces out of SO3, Radiata Stories, and I think something else. However, they don't know how to get the driver that actually plays those files. If you happen to know someone who can rip custom drivers out of PS2 games, then see if they'll do it. From what I recall, the only people have ripped custom PS2 drivers would be Neill and Zoopd. Hopefully though, someone will figure it out. Mouser X over and out.
by unknownfile at 10:08 PM EDT on October 1, 2006
PS2 driver modding is no easy task. Instead of working with a block of memory that contains a driver, you have to work with several that communicate to each other via an RPC (Remote Procedure Call), which is documented in the PS2 SDK. You also need the Sony SDK, which has the capabilities of compiling IRXes.

In short, this requires knowledge of C and MIPS assembly language, which I am in no mood to look at. UNKNOWNFILE under and in.

How long did it take you to send We Love Katamari to DarkPulse?
by unknownfile at 9:47 AM EDT on October 12, 2006
drat you, you figured it out
by F3582 at 5:48 PM EDT on October 12, 2006
I saw a thread over at Project2612 where he requested those sets. I tried to DCC We Love Katamari to him, but unfortunately it was hellishly slow. Well, and then I told him that Sir Stupcarp might have it :D

This isn't exactly xSF related, but it is s small derivitive of NSF. Can anyone access http://meridian.overclocked.org/? It looks like Meridian didn't pay for the web site in too long of a time, to me... Since Meridian's site seems to be down ( :( ) can anyone tell me what the most recent version of the GBS Winamp plugin was? I have v0.31. Does anyone happen to have Meridian's email address? At the very least I'd like to know what's up, and let him know, if he doesn't already.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any help anyone might have to offer (marioman, I'm looking at you). Mouser X over and out.
by unknownfile at 3:25 PM EDT on October 21, 2006
Down it is. The hell?

Man, I haven't been ripping in a while. I feel tempted to get ripping a GSF, but school has been slowing me down.
by marioman at 4:13 PM EDT on October 21, 2006
Latest in_gbs version? v.0.3.1.

I have been wondering for a while what has happened to Meridian's site. It has been down for about two weeks.

I don't know of a way to contact Meridian, but I do happen to know that he has been VERY busy because of a job promotion. It may be that he just hasn't had time to go to his site lately and doesn't even know it is down.

You may be able to get Meridian's E-mail address from someone at OC Remix. If they don't know, I guess we will just have to wait until he fixes his site.
by Mouser X at 4:57 PM EDT on October 21, 2006
Google cache to the rescue! Though, considering how old these are, I don't know if they're still valid. Doing a search, I found 2 email addresses for Meridian. Those 2 are as follows:
cline at rollanet dot org
meridian at overclocked dot org

Due to lack of time, I can't email either of those right now. Though, I will later if I get the chance. Hopefully one of them is still valid, and that he checks it somewhat frequently... Mouser X over and out.
by marioman at 5:05 PM EDT on October 21, 2006
I thought that it was the Overclocked address, but I couldn't find it in the Google cache. Good luck in contacting him.
gbs2gb by unknownfile at 2:03 PM EDT on October 22, 2006
Just so you guys know, I am making an automated converter that allows anyone to turn a GBS file into a GSF set. :)

So far, I have a program that is able to convert a GBS into a GB ROM. The algorithm isn't perfect (titles and such aren't read yet), but the results are nice.

You can nab it here if you use Windows, or you can also click here for a Mac OS X flavor which should work on computers supporting Universal binaries.

Usage is (omit the ./ if you are using Windows):

./gbs2gb base

Replace base with the file you wish to convert without the .gbs extension.

Enjoy!

The algorithm is based off of ugetab's VB converter of the same name, which is full of unneeded junk. This should clean it up a bit ;)

GSFLIB generation is now functional. However, I can't compile on Mac OS X until I figure out how to include the zlib library in xcode.
gbs2gsf by unknownfile at 5:33 PM EDT on October 24, 2006
OK, it's pretty much done. There are some bugs with this, though:

- Since the goomba library is somewhat inaccurate, emulation of certain sets may suck.
- This currently leaves behind a bunch of temporary files which might be useless. In which case, feel free to delete them.

So far, I have only built this on Windows. A Mac OS X version might be coming soon, who knows...

source code
win32 binary

Also, ugetab says that there are some bugs with converting certain sets (Deja Vu), so he'll be making his own version. I will continue to maintain this one.

Very nice UF. It seems that your sampling rate is a little low though. (As is my complaint with NEZPlug. ) Try converting Wario Land 3 and play track 20 - you will see what I mean. This may be the same thing that ugetab was referring to - I am not sure.

Maybe your hearing is just too good, you mutant freak.

I would suspect the opposite. I have almost been deafened while trying to use NEZPlug to listen to tracks that have that bell-like instrument in them.
by unknownfile at 8:36 AM EDT on October 25, 2006
Yeah, apparently the sampling rate is a bit too high. I couldn't really tell the difference when I first invented the concept, as I was using NEZplug at the time.
by marioman at 12:40 PM EDT on October 25, 2006
You can find an example of what it should sound like by downloading the Wario Land 2 soundtrack at Galbadia Hotel. There are a few tracks on WL2 that exhibit the same problem. (It is track 47 of the GBS archive, which corresponds to the MP3 here)

I also recommend getting the old version of in_gbs from Zophar.net to help you locate the problem. (The sampling rate on it is correct.)

Hope that this helps.

--EDIT--

Oh yeah, something else. I find it slightly annoying that the extension of the GBS file is added in the program. This makes it impossible to run the program by dragging GBS file onto a program shortcut.

I figure this has to do with xSF... by unknownfile at 12:04 PM EST on November 1, 2006
I'm setting up an NSF mirror over here. This only contains two sets (Tobidase Daisakusen (Great Plan Fly-Out/World Runner) and a fixed version of Contra Force) as of now, but I will be updating it as I go along.

The two sets came from here, so I hope he doesn't mind me mirroring the sets here.

FF6 Advance up at GSF Central, courtesy CS2 and Sir-Sabin. Enjoy!

This is in regards to Meridian's GBS plugin, and site. I found the forums! I have Lunary to thank for that. He performed a Google search for "Mouser X over and out." Having used that for the last 8+ years, one of the results lead me here. So, Meridian is aware that the site is down, but doesn't have control over that problem, it seems.

Anyway, if there's anyone interested in finding Meridian related stuff, please spread the word/link, because I doubt it's widely known where it can be found.

Also, to add to the list of email addresses I had earlier, it seems that the list should include this:
cline at rollanet dot org
meridian at overclocked dot org
oneeyedbluemonkey at hotmail dot com

Perhaps someone wants to try these out? Mouser X over and out.

Nice find Mouser! Hopefully he will be able to get his website problems resolved so he can get back to finishing the GBS plugin. Thanks.

Once again you have failed to meet the guidelines for tagging.

Some things to remember:

- Renaming files isn't tagging.
- Tagging guidelines are at the bottom of the GSF Central page.

Midterms aho<s>y</s>i!

I'm going to be busy as hell over the next few weeks but I will still find the time to be a lazy ass. During this time, I will be taking requests for GBA games to rip over the spring break.

Also, since Josh has disappeared, I will do work on 1080 when I have the chance.
cs2 is at it again by unknownfile at 9:29 AM EDT on July 18, 2007
This hasn't been updated in ages, but our good friend Caitsith2 has made a very cool new PSF-based format.

This time he is targeting the Super Nintendo, which is very cool, considering that SPC has been in need of a replacement for quite some time.

The Lost Vikings 2 and a modded SNES9X

now off to work for today!
by marioman at 9:42 AM EDT on July 18, 2007
Wow! I guess a Wario's Woods rip is now a reality. I hope that CS2 rips it soon.
and another project for me by unknownfile at 5:15 PM EDT on July 18, 2007
Since 2sf has proven to be an annoyance I am instead trying a lower-end console called the Genesis. This is because it's been in need of a good format and everyone who makes up a format for the console ends up logging the writes to the sound chip.

My current target is Sonic the Hedgehog but only because the assembly code is on the internet. I'm aiming to compress the whole ROM so that only needed code is included.

There is a 1 second pause before the music starts so a silence suppression function in Winamp will be A+.

EDIT: Just got Gens compiling. Yay!

SNSF by Mouser X at 12:29 AM EDT on July 19, 2007
I wonder how long it will take, before someone hits Wikipedia with the new SNES format? Had I Wiki access (do I?), I'd consider doing it myself... Though, it'd be much better if someone who has had some wikipedia experience were to do such a thing.

And yes, I searched. As far as I could tell, it's not on Wikipedia yet. Though, the "Swiss National Science Foundation" is on there. I just thought I'd point that out. Mouser X over and out.

Charles MacDonald (http://cgfm2.emuviews.com/) has a semi working format and a few rips done, he's just waiting with the release till he'll fix some of bugs.
